Major 250 km Scramble Tomorrow Morning - Might Never Return..Entry Added: Jan-25-2014 By: Bigs
After a year of gentle bumbling around on easy(ish) tracks through plantations and farmland I am once again going to join the boys...
The hardcore, go anywhere local Borneo scramblers that I previously tackled "Bukit Tinggi" with. Yes, those crazy bastards that damn near killed me last time.
It gets worse - last time I was on my Honda MTX 200 2-stroke producing 32 HP and built for such conditions. This time I'm on a brand-new "motard" that's really designed for the road and a 4-stroke producing 20 HP...
The only modification is I've put some off-road tires on it.
It's only done 1000 km and still running in. The suspension is too hard, the rear sprocket too small and the gearing too high, so tomorrow will be "a challenge" at best.
I seriously doubt my new bike's ability for such terrain and fully expect to crash a few times. It doesn't even have proper bark busters, so I'm half-expecting to break the clutch lever and end up stranded up a mountain somewhere...
Not to mention my dodgy left knee.
Well crap.. why am I going?
Because to be invited by these guys is an honor - and the ride promises to be fantastic.
Measuring a straight line between the various points of the route, it will be around 150 km, except of course there's nothing straight about going up and down mountains and through jungles, river beds etc, so realistically more like 300 km actual riding distance, maybe 350 km.
And yes, it's rainy season...
If you look on Google Earth we're basically doing a big loop around the Western end of Sarawak, from Bau, to the border, to Lundu, nearly all off-road. Hopefully there will be some smoother bits but I've been with these guys before. Their view is "Why ride around a mountain, when you can try to ride over it?"
So if you never hear from me again, you know why.
If I do make it back I'll hopefully have some helmet cam footage, though the ride will be at least 8 hours and the battery barely lasts 1 hour.
I survived, and so did the bike :)
Sadly I only have some relatively boring camera footage. I really should buy some spare batteries for that thing.

Happy new year!Entry Added: Jan-1-2014 By: Bigs
I could live without Youtube or Facebook, and would like to burn that fucking Google+ crap, but this place is sorta like home.
A lot of that is because of the people - and the blocking feature, which is awesome! :)You need to be registered in order to add comments!

Actually not so much a tumble as a thud... Nice bruising all down right hand side. Hit my head so hard I had double vision for a few seconds. Yep, I need a new helmet. Arse. As is often the cas
Most of the local boats are of the open, canoe-style "sampan" design, even the larger ones. Finding one with a cabin and Western styling is rare. I had one, a 19 footer but she was too small to car
This is just a 10 minute random segment where nothing much happens but I did say I'd upload some footage. So here's some footage :) Part of an epic 10 hour trek through mountains, valleys, streams,
