I think the "gods" were actually aliens that bred aquatic monkeys for work animals. Then they were done getting whatever they needed from our planet and left, and the religions of old were the stories men made up to make sense out of what happened.

Yea the ancient astronaut theories seem pretty reasonable and it definitely would explain the "Chariots of Fire" and ancient scriptures of Helicopters and other human-like beings. The only problem is, is that there isn't enough evidence yet to actual prove them and our old "gods" haven't popped by for a visit recently.
