Men penned the Bible that was inspired by God. Foremost, there are things written in the Bible a couple thousand years ago that have recently been "discovered" last century. Freshwater springs at the bottom of the ocean for example - if man just made all this up, how did they know about those? They had a submarine that could examine it? Matthew Maury - he took God at His word and searched for those "paths of the sea". M More..odern oceanography is indebted to Matthew Maury for doing a little research in what he read in Psalm 8. Men just made that up too? The freshwater springs and oceanic currents are fiction?

Additionally, you might want to do a little reading on things such as allegory, symbolism, etc... Just maybe, those things in the Bible you have such a hard time with might, just might be symbolic of something else. This gives credit to an idea that God has intentionally put things in the Bible to entrap Bible scoffers. While the shallow individuals only out to find flaws choke and bark over unicorns, they are completely clueless to the depth of passages in the Bible. Like I said, give someone enough rope, they eventually hang themselves.

if i had a problem with "allegory, symbolism, etc" then i wouldn't consider the bible a work of fiction. a big problem is that too many religious people DO have a problem with "allegory, symbolism, etc" and interpret this work of fiction as a literal interpretation of god's word. this type of interpretation leads to intolerance of others (gays, differing religious sects, stem cells, cloning, etc). and if you personally have a problem with cloning, it's ironic you would say that god made a woman by cloning one of adam's "cells."

as for matthew maury: regardless where he got his inspiration, he was not the first to recognize the significance of ocean currents.

mariners have known for many centuries that the ocean contains currents that flow along generally consistent paths. the spanish galleons transporting gold and silver from mexico to spain made use of the gulf stream to help them return home, while benjamin franklin used ships' log books to draw a map of this current in 1772.

if maury had studied franklin's writings, instead of relying on the bible, he would have learned about "paths in the seas" considerably sooner than he did. no divine insight from a holy book was necessary to discover what franklin and early seamen had already discovered through normal observational skills.

What are the facts? Scoffing at the Bible isn't factual, or a substantive argument. All it tells me is you hate scripture and probably won't do any kind of in depth study other than glancing at garbage that is vomited into cyberspace by stupid atheistic websites.

what are the facts? here's one:

MEN wrote the bible inspired by the writings of other men and a long history of mythology/storytelling. constantine the great (who was the first roman emperor to convert to christianity) is credited as being THE man responsible for the so-called "word of God."

desperate to unify rome under his rule, constantine used what motivates many to action - money - by offering the various church leaders money to agree upon a single canon that would be used by all christians as the word of God. the church leaders gathered together at the council of nicaea and voted the "word of God" into existence.

until this time the various christian leaders could not decide which books would be considered "holy" and thus "the word of God" and which ones would be excluded and not considered the word of God.

Perhaps you attack other beliefs because of a fear that what you believe might be false. Atheism has a bade side effect of putting ones brain in neutral and not asking any questions anymore since atheists already know all the answers. Since they say point blank, there is no God, that leaves zero room for debate or examination of the facts. How about at least moving a notch up into agnostic. An agnostic at least admits he or she "doesn't know" if God exists. That is intellectual honesty, something that atheism can't allow.

uh, no. one of the basic tenets of atheism is to concede we know next to nothing. asking questions IS what being atheist is all about...as is applying a rigorous scientific method to searching for the answers. have you ever heard of the scientific method? FYI: it didn't come out of religious doctrine.

as for having a debate examining the facts about god...newsflash: there are NO facts regarding the existence of god. hate to burst your bubble friendo, but logic and reason are your enemy.

the universe is expanding. it's full of billions of galaxies just like ours. this we know. and for all we know, there could be billions of other universes on top of the one we know actually exists. this reality (unless of course you doubt what our technology can detect) is far too complex and far too vast for our puny little minds to comprehend. to believe that a book authored by men (like constantine) is the word of the creator of this vastness is not only naive, it's insulting to what little intelligence we do possess.

as for the morality inherent to many teachings within the bible, yes i do appreciate this aspect of this work of fiction...i only wish the zealots out there would dwell on morality instead of cherry picking particular verses to fit their agenda. when this garbage ceases and my life is no longer infringed upon by religion, THEN and ONLY THEN will i stop criticizing religion.

evolutions don't "require" anything to be a certain way. they devise theories and conclusions based on observation, factual evidence and applied scientific research/study.

creationists, on the hand, require that their story remain unchallenged since it's the word of god. sounds suspiciously similar to a propaganda technique defined by adolf hitler as a lie so colossal that no one would believe that someone could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously Less..
