If you ever decide to compile a collection of war stories from your Russian friend, I would be greatly interested. I suspect that quite a few others would be as well. The real stories are told in the small scale rather than the national headlines.

I really need to do that, he is truly a wonderful person. I failed to mention he was also an airborne trooper! That is why I think he took a liking to me. I recognized his accent (I was married to a Russian once), and asked him what he did in the Soviet military; as I knew service was compulsory. I think that it is true that the real stories happen on the small stage. I really appreciate these insights. Someone once said that one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic. The up close and personal stories are the ones that have staying power. I hope you record your friend's stories for others even if they are never really published. He is a treasure that should be preserved. Buy him a beer or twelve and start the tape recorder. Just make sure you invite me.
