I don`t think that the most of the Pasthuns are against the Taliban, note that about 34 million of them live in Pakistan and are very connected with their compadres from Afghanistan.
Maybe local people do not show open hostility to you, but that`s part of their strategy .
As for Opium/Heroin , it is a basic funding source for the Taliban both in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
I know it is forbidden by Sharia law, but they don`t give a damn about that now, since the Taliban make more than 1 billion More..

No IED`s? There were IED`s back then, but no one spoke of them !
Little children back then wore arms and fought against the Soviets, and it is not much of a difference !
But they were fighting the stinky SOVIET COMMIES so no one gave a damn about that , the Westerners/Americans even encouraged them to do so.
