Actually I've spent a lot of time trying to learn French. I'm at the stage where I can understand most of what I read but whatever I say is certainly gibberish.
Also. Why do French newsreaders talk so fast? It's very very hard to understand.

I made a joke (note :-) ) and then admitted I was in the same state of ignorance as chevalfou.
I have spent some time trying to learn French and I have had to use it in practice in Quebec (not very well)

When I visted Montreal I was working in IT and court recording systems.
The only time I spoke French was with the Spanish speaking maid in my hotel. We had no common language as she spoke Spanish and a bit of French. I spoke English and a bit of French.
Luckily in Montreal most people speak English of some sort - Unlike Quebec City.
