Not sure what you mean about the Mk19 being too large and cumbersome for the battlefield. It is a mounted weapon, in most cases, and a fantastic addition to any squad. It certainly is not a weapon that will be used in foot patrol, but on a vehicle or on the wire, its more than suited for the battle field.
I can only guess that you have not served, or been trained on the Mk19. I have, and that was by far my favorite weapon. Talk about reach out, and touch someone. It is a fantastic anti personn More..

As a matter of fact,the only time it is cumbersome, is when you are uploading or downloading it from your vehicle. Outside of that, nothing cumbersome about it.

Evolution I think. I would suspect that since we are tribal and societal if something bad happens we scream to warn our friends of danger so they can react to safety or help. if it has caused a greater survival it would be selected for.
