Do you recognise men carrying unexploded tank shells they'd picked up from Dorset beauty spot?

            9:51am Wednesday 15th May 2013 in News

Do you recognise men carrying unexploded tank shells they'd picked up from Dorset beauty spot?

Two men were pictured strolling through a Dorset beauty spot while each was shouldering a potentially lethal 120 millimetre tank shell.

The unbelievable scene took place between Worbarrow Bay and Tyneham, where hundreds of local people and visitors were out enjoying Monday afternoon's fine spring weather.

It was captured by a woman on her mobile phone's camera at around
2.30pm while she and her family were walking from the beach to the car
park. The area is used by the Army for firing practice.

"I thought they were carrying rugs, but as they walked past, I saw they were enormous shells.

"I was with somebody who used to be in the Army and he said that
because their ends were intact, they were unexploded," she said.

"I was really scared. As they were walking past, my little girl was alongside them. They could have gone on the Sandbanks Ferry or on the motorway. I just think they're idiots."

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence said it was impossible to tell from the photograph whether the shells were live or practice rounds.

"The men should immediately contact the police who will arrange for bomb disposal experts to examine the shells. There is no guarantee theseitems are free from explosive and they could therefore be extremely dangerous.

"The MOD takes the safety of the public extremely seriously and all pathways at Lulworth Ranges that are open to the public are cleared of military objects, including shells, before access is permitted.

"The MOD urges members of the public using the ranges to keep to the designated pathways and be advised that it is extremely dangerous to touch any military material they may find."

South Dorset MP and former soldier Richard Drax said: "Unexploded shells can be very unstable. If they are picked up or dropped, it can set them off."

The MOD is appealing for the individuals in the photograph, or anybodywho knows their identity, to contact the Ministry of Defence Police Central Control Room on 01371 854500 quoting Incident Number 63 10-03-2013, as a matter of urgency.

Dambusters Derwent flypast on 70th anniversary of raid

A Lancaster bomber has
performed a flypast over Derwent reservoir, 70 years on from the
historic World War II raid on German dams.
Hundreds of onlookers gathered near the dam - one of the practice sites pilots used ahead of their top-secret mission.

More than a third of the men never returned from the raids, which required them to fly 60ft above ground.

The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and 617 Squadron flew over the dam in Derbyshire's Hope Valley.

Only three of the 133-strong squadron are still alive. Ninety-four-year-old Les Munro, is the only surviving pilot.

More than 1,300 people were killed when the bombs hit German dams and flooded the Ruhr valley.

Of the original aircrew, three were captured and 53 were killed

'Sacrifice'
The flypast was one of a number of events taking place around England on Thursday to mark the raids of 16-17 May 1943.

The Royal British Legion will create a Field of Messages at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire.

Over 10,500 cardboard crests with supporters' messages will be on display at the memorial throughout the day.

And at RAF Scampton near Lincoln, where 70 years ago the bomber pilots took off on their mission, there will be a sunset ceremonyand another memorial flypast, to be broadcast on BBC2 at 19:00 BST. TheRAF is live tweeting the original wireless telegraphy signals from the raid on Thursday, through its Twitter account .
An exhibition and talk is also being held in Barry Island, Vale of Glamorgan, the hometown of a crew member Gordon Yeo, who died in 1943, and on Friday events are taking place at the Eder Dam in Germany.
"I think events like this make us remember the sacrifice those young lads made during the raid, said well-wisher Roy Taylor."They never got the recognition they deserved I don't think."

Derwent reservoir was one of the places pilots practised low-flying before the raid

The Dambusters raid was carried out by 133 airmen, flying 19 Lancaster bombers armed with the "bouncing bombs" designed by Sir Barnes Wallis.
Dr Wallis's daughter described him as a "man of peace" but said he acted out of a sense of patriotic duty.

"He was not a man of war and that is often not, I think, properly understood," Mary Stopes-Roe told the BBC. "But if you have to defend something you have to defend it and that's it, you do your duty."

He was "devastated" when he heard how many airmen had been lost, she said. 'Very successful'

Dambusters raid: Retrace their daring journey
Compared to today's pilots, who must fly 250ft above ground, they flew incredibly low at 60ft. They alsohad to fly in the dark for the night-time raid.
They flew so low, according to historian Dan Snow, that one hit the sea, tearing off the bomb carried by the plane. Another flew into high voltage electricity cables and was engulfed in flames.
Codenamed Operation Chastise, 56 of the men who took off on the mission did not return.

Out of 19 bombers, eight were shot down and 53 were killed.

Eight-year-old Jack Porter, who travelled with his father from Manchester to watch the flypast, said: "I can't believe they flew so low in the dark. They were very brave.
"It was brilliant to see the Lancaster today."

The military impact of the Dambusters raid, immortalised in a 1955 film starring Michael Redgrave, is disputed.

"I believe from an operational point of view they were very successful," veteran Les Munro told the BBC. "They had achieved the two major primary targets."
Writing for the BBC news website, Dan Snow said : "No raid mounted by so few aircraft had ever caused such extensive material damage.

"It did not bring German war production to a permanent halt, but nobody had expected it to."

Canadian rear gunner Fred Sutherland, 89, and 91-year-old Squadron Leader George 'Johnny' Johnson are the only other two surviving members of 617 Squadron.

Store pulls monkey nuts from shelves over 'peanut warning'

A WTF moment, is Society really become this dumb, have the paper pushers really become this anal.

Store pulls monkey nuts from shelves over 'peanut warning'

Booths have withdrawn the 350g bags of monkey nuts

A supermarket chain has withdrawn bags of nuts - after failing to declare they may contain peanuts.

The Food Standards Agency issued an allergy alert saying the
presence of peanuts was not declared on Booths' own brand packets of
monkey nuts.
The supermarket has removed 300 packets of 350g Whole Hearted Roasted Monkey Nuts from its shelves.

Booths has apologised and warned customers with a peanut allergy not to consume the product.

Booths technical manager Waheed Hassan said: "It is our responsibility as retailers to accurately record allergy advice.

"In this instance, we felt a responsibility to recall the
product and issue a notice to our customers who might suffer from a
specific peanut allergy."
The term 'monkey nuts' describes peanuts with the shell or
pod intact. Packets affected are marked with the best before date 12
July 2013.
In a statement, the supermarket said it had identified the labelling error and issued a warning to customers.

"If you have an allergy to peanuts, please do not consume this product and return it to your local store for a full refund.

"No other products are affected by this issue and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused."

Booths has 29 stores across the North of England in Cumbria,
Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire as well as one in Greater Manchester.
According to Allergy UK, peanut and tree nut allergy is the most common food allergy in adults and children.

Although the majority of peanut allergies are mild, some
reactions can be severe causing difficulty in breathing due to asthma or
throat swelling, or a drop in blood pressure.

Child benefit changes take effect

The benefit will be fully withdrawn for families with one parent earning above lb60,000

More
than a million better-off families will lose some or all of their child
benefit, under changes which came into force at midnight.
Families with one parent earning more than lb50,000 lose part
of their child benefit and it will be fully withdrawn where one parent
earns above lb60,000.
The government hopes to save lb1.5bn a year to help reduce the deficit.

David Cameron described the move as "fundamentally fair" but Labour said it was a "huge assault" on families.

Defending the policy, the prime minister said: "I'm not
saying those people are rich, but I think it is right that they make a
contribution.
"If we don't raise that... from that group of people - the
better off 15% in the country - we would have to find someone else to
take it from."
Shadow chancellor Ed Balls said the government should tax the
richest, rather than make changes that affect those on middle incomes,
and described the changes as a "complete shambles".
Nearly 200,000 high earners have already opted out of
receiving child benefit but several hundred thousand others who missed a
deadline to declare they will no longer qualify will now have to fill
in self-assessment tax forms.
My tax affairs are very simple so the one thing I don't really want to do is the self-assessment thing"
PaulChild benefit claimant

Campaigners say this has created complexity in the system.

They have also pointed to the fact that a family where two
parents work and both earn lb49,000 a year will keep their benefits,
while a family with a single earner on lb51,000 - where the other parent
may have chosen to stay at home in a caring role - will lose part of
theirs.
  Simpler
Child benefit is paid at the rate of lb20.30 a week for the first child, and then lb13.40 a week for each child after that.

It lasts until each child reaches 16, or 18 if they are still in full-time education, and in some cases until they are 20.

More than a million people are set to be affected by the cut,
with the Institute of Fiscal Studies estimating that they would lose an
average of lb1,300 a year.Child benefit amounts to lb20.30 a week for an eldest or only child

Any child benefit paid to high-earners who have failed to opt out will be clawed back through the High Income Child Benefit Charge , administered by HM Revenue and Customs.

If somebody earning more than lb50,000 or their partner keeps
claiming child benefit, then the higher earner will have to admit this
in a self-assessment tax form. The IFS estimates that 500,000 extra
people might have to fill in these forms as a result of the change.
A Treasury spokesman said: "Withdrawing child benefit on the
basis of the combined family income would require intrusive
means-testing of all eight million households getting child benefit. The
way we are doing it is simpler for the vast majority of families."
But the stance has not been welcomed by many people who would be affected.

Paul, from West Sussex, who has a six-year-old son was one of a number of people who reportedly failed to receive a letter from HMRC explaining the options for higher earners on what to do.

He told the BBC: "My salary goes up and down, but we will
continue to claim it. But my tax affairs are very simple so the one
thing I don't really want to do is the self-assessment thing."
The deadline has now expired for higher earners to opt out of
receiving child benefit. They will still be able to do so, but may
still face a tax charge for the time still in the system since 7
January.
The latest official figures from HM Revenue and Customs show
that 191,873 people have opted out of receiving child benefit - mostly
because they know they will consistently earn more than lb60,000 a year,
or earn over lb50,000 and do not want to be pulled into the
self-assessment system.

Dorset cliff landslide: Tribute to Charlotte Blackman

Tributes have been paid to a 22-year-old woman who died after being buried under
hundreds of tonnes of rocks following a landslip on a Dorset beach.
Charlotte Blackman, of Derbyshire, was walking on Hive Beach
near Freshwater Beach Holiday Park at Bridport when the rocks came down
on Tuesday.
Her uncle Douglas Blackman described her as a "lively, fun-loving woman".

Ms Blackman, her boyfriend and her father were all buried when the 160ft (49m) high cliff above them collapsed.

The men were pulled free by bystanders but they could not locate Ms Blackman.

Her body was found by emergency workers at 21:40 BST within the 33ft (10m) high pile of fallen rocks.

Witnesses at the beach said Ms Blackman, from Heanor, had been seen walking directly under the cliff.

'Tragic accident'
Mr Blackman said: "I don't have many words at the moment, to be honest. I found out last night at about 11pm.

"She was on holiday with her whole family, her mum Rachel,
dad Kevin, sister Sinead, little brother Mitchell, and boyfriend Matt.
"My brother and her boyfriend and her little brother were
there when it happened. I understand the boyfriend got her little
brother away into the sea to get him from it.

About 400 tonnes of rock fell from the 160ft (49m) high cliff

"She was a lively, fun-loving woman, who had her whole life in front of her."

Search crews used sniffer dogs and specialist listening
devices to try to find Ms Blackman amid fears of further rock falls at
the site.
Three coastguard teams, helicopters, police, firefighters, ambulance and lifeboat crews took part.

The search was called off once her body was found as there were no further reports of missing people, police said.

A spokesman added: "It is believed the incident was a tragic
accident and our thoughts are with the family of the victim at this very
difficult time."
The inquest into Ms Blackman's death was opened and adjourned at County Hall in Dorchester earlier.

The beach forms part of the historic Jurassic Coast - from
Swanage in Dorset to Exmouth in Devon - sections of which have been
crumbling into the sea for years.
Last week, Dorset Council issued a warning to visitors and walkers of the risk of landslips following persistent heavy rain.

Mick Stead, of Dorset Fire and Rescue, estimated 400 tonnes
of rock had fallen in the "significant collapse" covering an area of 20m
between Freshwater and Burton Bradstock.
He said the recent weather was the likely trigger for the landslide at the beach.

Witnesses reported seeing part of the cliff fall onto the
beach, and then some minutes later more rocks fall on top of the mound.
Eyewitness Liz Rice said: "We just saw a huge cloud of yellow dust from the cliff.

"Clearly some of the cliff had fallen on to the beach and within 20 minutes the emergency services had arrived."

The incident comes two weeks after Somerset couple Rosemary
Snell and Michael Rolfe were killed in a landslide, nine miles away at
the Beaminster Tunnel.

Latest

Two found in car more than one week after heavy rain caused landslide in Beaminster Tunnel.
Man in 70s from Taunton and woman in 60s from Crewkerne found dead under mud.
Police used credit card details to trace the pair.
                                  5:38pm

DORSET Police have just released a full statement following the incident.

Assistant Chief Constable, James Vaughan, said: "During Saturday, July
7 2012 severe weather conditions and localised flooding caused a
partial collapse of Beaminster Tunnel, bringing down several
hundred tonnes of mud and rubble onto the road and surrounding area.

"Partner agencies, including Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, Dorset
Police and Dorset County Council searched the tunnel. There was no sign
of any vehicle and, at this time, there were no reports
of any missing people in the surrounding area.

"The tunnel has remained closed for the past 10 days.

"At approximately 6.30pm yesterday, Monday, July 16 2012, Avon and
Somerset Constabulary contacted local emergency services regarding a
possible connection between this incident and a missing
elderly couple from the Somerset area.

"Enquiries, involving telephone and bank card data, led Avon and
Somerset Constabulary to believe that the missing couple had been in the
Beaminster area around Saturday, July 7 - they had not
  been seen since.

"Emergency service crews were subsequently sent to search the area,
and following a period of excavation discovered a car under a large
volume of earth and mud. This vehicle is connected to the
  missing people.

"A cordon was put in place while emergency service staff excavated the
vehicle. The vehicle has now been seized for examination.

"The body of one person has been found in the car and it is suspected
that a second person will also be found. However, due to the time
elapsed, the large volume of earth in and around the car and
the deterioration of the vehicle enquiries are ongoing.

"Next of kin have been informed of the developments and are being
supported by family liaison officers. The Coroner has been notified."

            4:51pm

THE bodies of a man and a woman missing from Somerset have been found in a car submerged in mud in a Dorset tunnel.

It is understood one of the people in the vehicle, which was
discovered in an area known as the Beaminster Tunnel is from Taunton and
the other is from Crewkerne.

Emergency services are attempting to excavate the vehicle which became trapped in a landslide more than a week ago.

The bodies of the missing man and woman were only discovered after
police used credit card details to retrace their steps and follow the
route they may have taken.

The gruesome discovery was made on Monday night when firefighters
unearthed the car near the Beaminster Tunnel in West Dorset, south of
Crewkerne.

The A3066 road has been closed at the Tunnel since heavy flooding on
Friday July 6 and Saturday July 7 caused a landslide on the hill above
the tunnel which fell onto the road and some structural
  damage to tunnel itself.

Traffic has been diverted from Crewkerne into Beaminster.

Twin Towers Collapse Helps Development of Super Steels (one in the eye for the conspiracy theorists?

Many of the conspiracy blogs we read all seem to say that the heat generated by the planes hitting the towers would not have been enough to melt the steel supports, apparently science has decided to disagree.
-------------------------

Scientists say an understanding of how the Twin Towers collapsed will help them develop the materials needed to build fusion reactors.

New research shows how steel will fail at high temperatures because of the magnetic properties of the metal.

The New York buildings fell when their steel backbones lost strength in the fires that followed the plane impacts.

Dr Sergei Dudarev told the British Association Science Festival that improved steels were now being sought.

The principal scientist at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) said one of the first applications for these better performing metals would be in the wall linings of fusion reactors where temperatures would be in a similar range to those experienced in the Twin Towers' fires.

'Not melting'

The key advance is the understanding that, at high temperatures, tiny irregularities in a steel's structure can disrupt its internal magnetic fields, making the rigid metal soft.

"Steels melt at about 1,150C (2,102F), but lose strength at much lower temperatures," explained Dr Sergei Dudarev, principal scientist at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA).
Artist's impression: Atoms in steel (UKAEA)
Iron atoms in steel: Black balls show irregularities that disrupt magnetic fields, weakening steel

At room temperature, the magnetic fields between iron atoms remain regular, but when heated, these fields are altered allowing the atoms to slide past each other, weakening the steel.

" becomes very soft. It is not melting but the effect is the same," said Dr Dudarev.

He said blacksmiths had exploited this property for hundreds of years - it allows iron to become pliable at temperatures much lower than its melting point.

The peak in this pliability is at 911.5C, but begins at much lower temperatures, at around 500C (932F) - a temperature often reached during building fires.

The steel backbone of the Twin Towers was probably exposed to temperatures close to this, when insulating panels - meant to protect the buildings' structural frame - were dislodged by the impacts of the hijacked planes.

The roaring fire mid-way up the building heated the steel struts, and once temperatures rose above 500C the structure became elastic, and collapsed under the force of the floors above.

Tuning up

The interest of Dr Dudarev and the UKAEA is to find steels that can withstand the intense heat of being inside a a fusion reactor.

UKAEA has helped pioneer fusion power - deriving energy by forcing together atomic nuclei - at Europe's JET lab in Oxfordshire; and is now assisting the development work on the world first large-scale experimental reactor known as Iter.

The extended periods over which Iter will run means the reactor must have robust materials built into the vessel where the fusion reactions will occur.

Dr Dudarev said it should be possible to tune the properties of suitable new steels by adding a mix of other elements.

"We need to look at the magnetic properties of steel, vary their chemical composition in a systematic way in order to get rid of this behaviour," he suggests.
