Officials in a German town have been accused of sexism after designating two particularly tricky parking spaces "men only".

A town in southwest Germany has drawn accusations of sexism after designating two particularly tricky parking spaces "men only".

The mayor of the Black Forest town of Triberg says women would find
it difficult to park there because drivers need to back in diagonally
without hitting a pillar and a wall.
Gallus Strobel notes that 12 places in the 220-capacity car park are reserved for women.

Many German cities designate a small number of parking spaces,
usually near exits, for women concerned about their personal safety in
poorly lit garages.
Strobel said he had received overwhelmingly positive reactions from men who feel discriminated against by "women only" parking.

But the Triberg mayor said some "humourless people" had criticised the move.

Chinese villagers and a local TV crew were in for an embarrassing
surprise after trying to identify a weirdly shaped, fungus-like object.
CHINA - As he was drilling a new well near his home in western China,
a villager found a weirdly shaped, fungus-like object. Not knowing what
to make of the discovery, he called the local TV station to come and
have a look.
The investigative program Xi'an Up Close quickly sent
reporter Ye Yunfeng to get to the bottom of the story, thinking the
object might just turn out to be a rare variety of "lingzhi mushroom," a
fungus said to hold the secret to longevity.
Watch Ye Yunfeng's live report in the video below.

A few hours later, the mythical object that the naive TV reporter had
been poking and prodding -and even measuring - and that almost everybody
in the village has been touching, is soon identified... it's a sex toy!

A woman paralysed for 15 years has moved a robotic arm using only her
mind, and researchers are increasingly confident about such new
developments.Using only her thoughts, a Massachusetts woman paralysed for 15 years
has directed a robotic arm to pick up a bottle of coffee and bring it
to her lips, researchers report in the latest advance in harnessing
brain waves to help disabled people.
In the past year, similar stories have included a quadriplegic man in
Pennsylvania who made a robotic arm give a high-five and stroke his
girlfriend's hand, and a partially paralysed man who remotely controlled
a small robot that scooted around in a Swiss lab.
It's startling stuff. But will the experimental brain-controlled technology ever help paralysed people in everyday life?

Experts in the technology and in rehabilitation medicine say they are
optimistic that it will, once technology improves and the cost comes
down.
The latest report, which was published online on Wednesday in the
journal Nature, comes from scientists at Brown University, the
Providence VA Medical Centre in Rhode Island, Harvard Medical School and
elsewhere.
It describes how two people who lost use of their arms and legs
because of strokes years before were able to control free-standing
robotic arms with the help of a tiny sensor implanted in their brains.
The sensor, about the size of a baby aspirin, eavesdropped on the
electrical activity of a few dozen brain cells as the study participants
imagined moving their arms. The chip then sent signals to a computer,
which translated them into commands to the robotic arms.
The computer was taught how to interpret the brain patterns through
practice as the paralysed participants watched the robot arms move and
then imagined that they were moving their own arms the same way.
In one task to test the system, the two participants tried to direct a
robot arm to reach out and squeeze foam balls in front of them. The man
succeeded in less than half his attempts, but the woman was able to do
it about 60 per cent of the time.
The woman, Cathy Hutchinson of East Taunton, Massachusetts, was also
asked to use the arm to drink the coffee. That involved picking up the
bottle, bringing it to her lips so she could sip from a straw, and
putting the bottle back on the table. She succeeded in four out of six
tries with the arm, which was specially programmed for this task.
"The smile on her face ... was just a wonderful thing to see," said
Dr Leigh Hochberg, a researcher with the Providence VA, Brown and
Massachusetts General Hospital.
Researchers said in Hutchinson's case that the results show that the
implanted chip still worked after five years, and that her brain was
still generating useful signals even though she hadn't moved her arms in
almost 15 years.
The ultimate goal, researchers said, is an implanted device that
would reactivate a person's own paralysed limbs. Another goal is to
operate high-tech prostheses for amputees.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says the era of the internet generation has arrived and he'll continue to expose "abusive organisations".

Speaking in a recorded message to a public meeting in Melbourne on Friday, Mr Assange said can't wait to be back in his home town and called on Australians concerned about his plight to take action.

He compared WikiLeaks' push for more transparent governance to the civil rights movement of the 1950s, the peace movement of the 1960s, feminism movements and the environmental movement.

"For the internet generation this is our challenge and this is our time," Mr Assange said.

"We support a cause that is no more radical a proposition than that the citizenry has a right to scrutinise the state.

"The state has asserted its authority by surveilling, monitoring and regimenting all of us, all the while hiding behind cloaks of security and opaqueness," Mr Assange told the free speech rally.

"Surely it was only a matter of time before citizens pushed back and we asserted our rights," he said.

Mr Assange has been living in a mansion in England owned by a WikiLeaks supporter while he awaits an extradition hearing to decide if he will be sent to Sweden to face rape charges.

The full hearing is due to begin on Monday, and in his video address Mr Assange appeared calm next to a window overlooking a meadow as he read a prepared statement.

Mr Assange, wearing a black suit and tie, appeared unshaven during the seven-and-a-half minute monologue.

"With your help and support we will make our way through this storm and continue to publish and hold powerful and abusive organisations to account," he said.

Mr Assange shot to world prominence after the whistleblowing website he founded published thousands of secret US cables.

There have since been numerous calls for him to be assassinated, including one from Tom Flanagan, a former adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and from rightwing commentators on America's Fox News.

He called on Australians to insist that attacks against his staff and organisation stop, that the federal government "come clean" on its interactions with foreign powers in relation to WikiLeaks, and that he be allowed to return home.

"We have been deeply moved by the concern that Australians have shown for us, but I ask that you turn your concern into action," he said.

He said that through its silence, the Australian government has condoned calls to have him and his staff killed.

Julian Assange awarded Sydney peace medal

02 February 2011 | 02:55:07 PM | Source: AAP

In the estimation of the Sydney Peace Foundation, Australian Wikileaks founder Julian Assange stands alongside the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela.

As he outrages and embarrasses world leaders by leaking secret US diplomatic cables - and continues to face down allegations of sex offences - Mr Assange has been chosen by the foundation to receive a rare gold medal for peace with justice.

The honour, previously given only to the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and Japanese lay Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda in the foundation's 14-year history, has been bestowed for Mr Assange's "exceptional courage and initiative in pursuit of human rights".

Foundation director Stuart Rees said on Wednesday the Australian's work had challenged the old order of power in politics and journalism.

"Peace from our point of view is really about justice, fairness and the attainment of human rights," Professor Rees told AAP.

"Assange has championed people's right to know and has challenged the centuries-old tradition that governments are entitled to keep the public in a state of ignorance."

Mr Assange was informed of the award last month and said it would be an "enormous pleasure and honour" to receive it, Prof Rees said.

The gold medal is distinct from the annual Sydney Peace Prize awarded by the foundation.

By leaking thousands of US diplomatic cables, Mr Assange had made a historically significant contribution to the operation of democracy, the Sydney Peace Foundation's executive decided.

"Wikileaks has exposed the extent to which governments, the military and business all over the world have used secrecy to cloak their real intentions and activities," it said.

Prof Rees said Mr Assange's work was in the tradition of Tom Paine's Rights of Man and Daniel Ellsberg's Pentagon Papers - "challenging the old order of power in politics and in journalism".

"In the Paine, Ellsberg and Assange cases, those in power moved quickly to silence their critics even by perverting the course of justice," he said in a statement.

Mr Assange remains in the UK on bail and under house arrest awaiting a court decision on whether he should be extradited to Sweden to face sexual assault allegations.

The foundation said the award would be presented to him in Sydney in mid-May or at a ceremony in London later in the year, depending on his whereabouts.

Prof Rees said the organisation would do everything necessary to ensure the award was given to Mr Assange in person.

Each of the previous gold medal recipients had been given their awards in face-to-face ceremonies, he said.

"Even if we have to travel secretly and announce the award later, we will do that," Prof Rees said.

The Sydney Peace Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation set up in 1998 within the University of Sydney and aims to promote peace and justice in Australia.

It is chaired by former SBS television presenter Mary Kostakidis.

A Canadian woman has become the first person in the world to graduate with a Masters degree in Beatles studies.

Former Miss Canada finalist, Mary-Lu Zahalan-Kennedy was one of the first 12 students to sign up for the Liverpool Hope University course on the Fab Four when it began in 2009 and was the first to graduate, the university said on Wednesday.

"I am so proud of my achievement," Zahalan-Kennedy said. "The course was challenging, enjoyable and it provided a great insight into the impact the Beatles had and still have to this day across all aspects of life."

The launch of the unique MA in Beatles, Popular Music and Society was a world first when it took its first class. Zahalan-Kennedy was the first to accept her degree in person from the university.

The course looks at the studio sound and composition of the Beatles and how Liverpool helped to shape their music. The MA examines the significance of their music and how it helped to define identities, culture and society.

Mike Brocken, founder and leader of the Beatles MA at Liverpool Hope University, said the postgraduate degree makes Zahalan-Kennedy a member of a select group of popular music experts.

"Mary-Lu now joins an internationally recognised group of scholars of Popular Music Studies who are able to offer fresh and thought-provoking insights into the discipline of musicology."

An Australian SAS soldier has emerged from the cloak of anonymity to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith was given the country's highest military honour for his bravery in single-handedly attacking Taliban positions in Afghanistan.

He has become Australia's most decorated soldier, having already won the Medal of Gallantry during a previous operation in the country.

The specialist sniper rushed into machine-gun fire in Shah Wali Kot in northern Kandahar on June 11 last year.

The citation for bravery said he acted with total disregard for his own safety in initiating an assault against three enemy machine gun positions, despite facing superior numbers of heavily-armed insurgents.

I am so very proud to have taken part in the action with my mates. This award also belongs to them and to the regiment.

Corporal Roberts-Smith

At a presentation ceremony in the western city of Perth, Prime Minister Julia Gillard told the soldier it was "an award unsought, but completely deserved".

"Corporal Roberts-Smith, you went to Afghanistan a soldier and came back a hero. Our nation is enriched by you being among our number," she said.

The soldier, who is 6ft 7in tall, was presented with the medal by Australia's Governor General Quentin Bryce.

The Australian defence ministry introduced its own version of the Victoria Cross 20 years ago, which was sanctioned by the Queen and is identical to the original.

Corporal Roberts-Smith was part of a team of two dozen SAS men who were dropped off by helicopter after reports indicated Taliban fighters were about to launch an assault on a combined unit of Australian and Afghan army forces.

They immediately came under heavy fire, but the corporal's actions impressed his colleagues.

He was described as a "warrior" who "just tore into the enemy".

They said it was the most extreme example of conspicuous gallantry since Albert Jacka was awarded a VC after jumping into a trench full of Turkish soldiers at Gallipoli in 1915, killing seven of them.

The 32-year-old corporal said he was honoured and humbled.

"I am so very proud to have taken part in the action with my mates. This award also belongs to them and to the regiment," he said.

Corporal Roberts-Smith becomes the second Australian to be given a VC for bravery in Afghanistan, where 21 of his countrymen have been killed in battle.

Trooper Mark Donaldson received the top award in 2008 for protecting wounded soldiers under heavy enemy fire and rescuing a wounded Afghan interpreter.

Veterans who participated in Cold War nuclear weapons tests cannot sue Britain's Defence Ministry after a court ruled on Monday that they didn't have enough evidence to prove their illnesses resulted from exposure to radiation.

Ten former servicemen sought damages from the ministry, arguing that a low but significant dose of radiation during nuclear testing in Australia and on Pacific Ocean islands in the 1950s resulted in illnesses including cancer, skin defects and arthritis.

But the Court of Appeal said nine out of the 10 test cases cannot continue in court because the veterans launched the cases after the legal time limit expired and because the men could not prove that radiation - rather than the onset of old age - prompted their illnesses.

"We have no doubt that it will appear that the law is hard on people like these claimants who have given service to their country and may have suffered harm as a result," Judge Janet Smith said in the judgment. She noted, however, that veterans exposed to radiation that might have caused them injury are entitled to a war pension.

The 10th case, that of Bert Sinfield, was entitled to proceed to trial. Sinfield, who died in 2007, claimed damages for anaemia and lymphoma. The 10 were test cases among a group of 1011 veterans - most from Britain, though some are from Fiji and New Zealand.

Neil Sampson, a lawyer representing the veterans, said lawyers are considering taking the nine rejected cases to the Supreme Court.

He added that because the 1011 cases were all different, there was nothing to stop the others from suing.

Defence officials argued that the ministry took all precautions to protect servicemen from radiation exposure. It also said that in most cases, the men were exposed to no more than the background radiation they would have experienced in the UK.

A same-sex vulture couple at a German zoo are to be split up this week after spending several months building a nest together, officials say.One of the two males is to be mated with a female vulture at a Czech zoo, said Dirk Wewers, curator at the Allwetter Zoo in Muenster. The zoo needs a few baby vultures.

The male couple, both 14, proved to be poor homemakers. "The other vultures kept stealing the material they used for the nest," said a zoo spokeswoman.
