Vancouver police spokesperson Sgt. Randy Fincham says the cyclist was "allegedly confrontational with police" after being stopped at Robson and Beatty streets for apparently running a red light. Cyclist Andishae Akhavan insists he was not resisting arrest, and says there was no reason for the officer to punch him in the face. Akhavan says he was riding his bike without a helmet through Yaletown at around 10:45 p.m. PT when two officers stopped him to ask about having run a few red lights. Akhavan got off his bike and says he started questioning the officers as one began writing him a ticket. "At that point they decided to put cuffs on me," he said. "I was just speaking to them. I didn't raise my voice or anything, and they started putting the cuffs on me." He says that's when the video, which shows Akhavan standing at the side of the road being restrained by two plainclothes officers, starts. "What is this for?" he asks. Akhavan's left arm moves as he turns his body to speak to one of the officers again. "Relax," the officer orders. Then Akhavan appears to get punched in the jaw. "Relax your arm," the officer then says. The incident was filmed by Akhavan's friend, Mike Schwarz, who says he happened to see his friend surrounded by the officers as he drove by, so he got out and started filming. Schwarz says Akhavan did nothing before the camera started recording video to provoke such a reaction. Schwarz told the officers the incident would go on TV. He posted it to Facebook, and in just a few hours the video received thousands of comments and shares. Fincham said Akhavan was treated at the scene by Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services for a cut lip. Akhavan was released but could still face charges, he said. Fincham said the incident was reported by the officer to his supervisor shortly afterwards. A 31-year-old woman from Whitehall is behind bars after being accused of stabbing her boyfriend in the heart and killing him on the day that they were supposed to get married. Officials from the District Attorney's office say Nacola Franklin is charged with one count of criminal homicide in the stabbing death of 36-year-old Billy Brewster. Investigators said police received a 911 call from 1580 Olympic Circle in Whitehall at 2:19 am on Saturday. When they arrived, Brewster was found in a second floor landing outside his apartment. He had been stabbed twice and was taken to Lehigh County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just over an hour later. Investigators said the couple lived together in the apartment. They were supposed to get married on that day. The Providence Journal reports that the Lincoln town administrator said the town had accepted an "unconditional and irrevocable" resignation from Officer Edward Krawetz (KRA'-witz). Krawetz, who was on an unpaid suspension, had been fighting to keep his job, but decided to drop his effort to remain on the force. A state judge convicted Krawetz inJanuary of felony battery with a dangerous weapon for kicking Donna Levesque, of Uxbridge, Mass., outside the casino. The encounter was caught on surveillance video. A Cottage City 19-year-old spent nearly 4 months in jail after Corporal Donald Taylor claimed Ryan Dorm assaulted him and the gun went off as Taylor struggled with him. The surveillance video is from a business on Perry Street near Rhode Island Avenue in the Brentwood area. Attorney Jimmy Bell, who represents Dorm, says the video shows Taylor out-and-out "lied" when he wrote up a report supporting assault charges against his client. The incident started when Dorm and a friend say they went to the "Lowest Price" gas station convenience store late that night to buy snacks. Dorm says his friend was wearing a ski mask because it was cold, but two police officers thought he looked suspicious and were going to rob the store. Ryan says he wanted to avoid any trouble, so he left.. But he says Taylor and a second officer followed him. The video shows Dorm being approached from behind, then smacked in the head with a gun. The video shows the flash from the gun as Dorm was being struck. Taylor has been indicted and faces a trial in November.
