Police were forced to block traffic on one of the city's main arterial roadway as protesters fled. Officers used batons and shields to try and quell the riot but the group broke free and run off as the chaos escalated again. Check out our photo gallery. As a frequent visitor to the beaches and wild rainforests of Cape York, kite surfer Ant Hadleigh thought he had seen it all. But the Cairns man was in disbelief after witnessing a golden orb spider slowly attempt to eat a brown tree snake at a mate's place in Freshwater yesterday afternoon. In pictures: Snake-eating spider at Freshwater "I thought it was pretty incredible," Mr Hadleigh said. "A few times the snake managed to get up and attack the spider, and the spider would run back up the web. "I would have put my money on the snake for sure, especially seeing how big it was." Mr Hadleigh estimated the tree snake to be around half a metre long and was alive for "an hour or more" after being caught in the spider's web, before finally succumbing to the crafty arachnid's venom. Mr Hadleigh said the same spider devoured a wasp the day before, after an aggressive sparring match between both creatures. "The wasp kept trying to sting it, and it (the spider) used its feet to push the stinger away every time," he explained. Mohammad Ashan, a mid-level commander wanted for his role in at least two attacks on security forces, approached police at a checkpoint in Paktika province with his wanted poster in hand. Pointing to his picture on the poster, Ashan demanded he be paid the reward money, the Washington Post reports. Stunned American forces, who came to confirm the insurgent's identity, said Ashan was keen to confirm his identity and pocket the money. When asked if the picture on the poster was him, Ashan replied, "Yes, yes, that's me! Can I get my award now?" Specialist Matthew Baker told the Post . The American troops confirmed Ashan's identity with a biometric scan. While happy he was in custody, US officials couldn't help but take a swipe at the prisoner's questionable intelligence. Tom Horn, from the Torres Strait, had to be operated on after large chunks of flesh were bitten out of his feet during the attack two months ago, news.com.au reports. Tom's father, Senior Sergeant Jamie Horn, said his son received "unbelievable wounds" requiring 30 stitches and had to stay in hospital for two weeks. "The ball of his left big toe was missing and a chunk of flesh was missing out of his right heel,'' Senior Sergeant Horn said. A ferocious puffer fish (feroxodon multistriatus) was believed to be responsible. The attack was so rare that doctors at the Cairns Base Hospital, where Tom was treated, plan to write a report about the incident for a medical journal.
