Snowmobiler dug out of avalanche on Stampede Pass

by KING 5 News

A snowmobiler caught in an avalanche on Stampede Pass Sunday was quickly rescued by friends who watched it happen.

The entire incident was recorded by a helmet cam, attached to the helmet of the man's friend, Rick Jablinske.

Jablinske posted the video on YouTube that night.

http://www.king5.com/news/local/Snomobiler-dug-out-of-avalanche-on-Stampede-Pass-137938768.html
Shown in the video, John, the man caught in the avalanche, stops at the bottom of a hill to watch another snomobiler higher up. The snowmobiler makes a few passes, letting loose an avalanche.

The torrent of snow thunders down the hillside, completely burying John.

Fellow snowmobilers get to him in seconds and frantically dig him out.

Breathing and dazed, John was okay and able to go home to recover.

All the snowmobilers were wearing protective clothing and helmets.

What Caused Cruise Ship To Run Aground? A look at the emerging theories.

As the investigation into the Costa Concordia grounding begins in earnest, we examine how events unfolded and look at the emerging theories.
HOW THE NIGHT UNFOLDED:

Passengers were having their first gala evening meal on board just two hours into their voyage when they heard a "loud bang" and the lights suddenly went out.

At first they remained calm and walked to get their life jackets from their rooms after being reassured it was an electrical fault or problem with the generator.

But they began to panic as the boat started to fill with water. It then began to list dramatically from left to right before toppling over.

After around an hour Captain Francesco Schettino gave the order to abandon ship.

Passengers and crew had little idea what to do because the evacuation drill was not due to happen until Saturday and there was chaos as people tried to escape.

Rescue workers including police divers worked for hours to get 4,000-plus people on board to safety but a number are still unaccounted for with six confirmed dead.

Investigations have already begun into how the Costa Concordia ran aground

THE POSSIBLE CAUSES:

WAS IT HUMAN ERROR?

The ship's owner, Costa Crociere SpA, is investigating but says "preliminary indications are that there may have been significant human error on the part of the ship's master".

In a statement , it said: "The route of the vessel appears to have been too close to the shore."

It had apparently become tradition for the Costa Concordia, which uses the same route on a weekly basis, to sail past the island of Giglio and blast its siren by way of salute.

But on Friday the vessel is said to have been as little as 150 yards from the shore rather than several miles out, putting it in the area of the rocks known as Le Scole.

They tore a 160ft hole in the hull below the waterline and within an hour, the boat had almost capsized.

Italian prosecutors claim the captain approached the coast in an "apparently clumsy manner"

Residents on the island said they had never seen the liner come so close to the rocks.

Giacomo Dannipale said: "Every so often they would do a greeting, but not so close - far away, safely,"

Douglas Ward, a cruise expert and author of the 2012 Berlitz guide to cruises, said the waters around Giglio are dangerously shallow.

A huge rock piercing the hull of the cruise ship

WERE FAULTY MAPS THE PROBLEM?

Captain Schettino has insisted he was twice as far out - around 300 yards - as some claim and that the ship ran aground because the rocks below were not marked on his nautical charts.

He did concede he had been maneuvering the ship in "touristic navigation", implying it was designed to entertain the passengers.

He told Italian TV: "We were navigating approximately 300 meters (yards) from the rocks. There shouldn't have been such a rock. On the nautical chart it indicated that there was water deep below."

The captain added: "I don't know if it was detected or not, but on the nautical chart it was marked just as water and some 100-150 metres (328ft-492ft) from the rocks, and we were about 300 metres (984ft) from the shore, more or less. We shouldn't have had this contact."

It is possible that, after the initial impact, the captain drove the ship closer to the shore for safety reasons but then hit rocks again causing further damage.

Residents on the island said it was usual for the ship to pass close by

DID TECHNICAL FAILURE PLAY A PART?

Passengers have told how they were initially reassured the issue was just an electrical fault or a problem with the generator before the situation descended into chaos.

A major electrical fault would have affected the ship's navigation equipment or a computer failure could have caused its systems to malfunction.

Experts have also speculated that there could have been a power failure. Cruise ships rely on their electric generators for steering, power and other facilities.

The Costa Concordia is powered by six diesel engines and a power surge could have interfered with the generators, prompting the back-up to fail as well.

The Queen Mary 2 was affected in this way in 2010 as it approached Barcelona but it was able to divert into open sea and restart its engines.

Malcolm Latarche, editor of global shipping magazine IHS Fairplay Solutions, said passenger reports of a power blackout and large "boom" sound supported this theory.

The maritime professionals' union Nautilus International also said it was "essential" for inquiries into the disaster to examine reports of an electrical problem on board.

WHY DID THE SHIP TOPPLE?

Experts say it is standard practice for crews to try and steer towards the shore if they start to experience difficulties so that a safe evacuation can take place.

But the Costa Concordia never made it to the harbour and instead foundered on rocks and toppled over - making the escape of passengers even more perilous.

It is thought this was simply because the water was too shallow for the ship - which is the world's 26th largest passenger ship and weighs 114,500 tons - to stay upright.

There are also claims the captain gave the order for the anchor to be dropped as he tried to turn the ship around to the shore, which may have sped up the intake of water and led to it capsizing.

There were scenes of panic as the Costa Concordia hit a sandbar on Friday evening near the island of Giglio and listed about 20 degrees. People reached land by lifeboats but some swam ashore.

Rescue teams have been going from cabin to cabin, searching for survivors.

Italians, Germans, French and British were among the 3,200 passengers. There were also 1,000 crew on board.

Helicopters evacuated the last 50 people on the deck who were in a "worsening" situation.

Three people were confirmed dead, Italian coast guard officials said on Saturday morning - fewer than the six or eight deaths reported by Italian media earlier.

The Costa Concordia was carrying more than 3,200 passengers when it ran aground off the Italian coast
