MILLCREEK -- Police have released video of a fatal accident, in which a car tried to beat a TRAX train.

Surveillance video from March 11 shows a car approach crossing arms near 4100 South and 200 West in Salt Lake County. Instead of waiting, the car goes around the flashing lights and collides with a train.

Two people in the car died, and two more went to the hospital with serious injuries.

"We're just hoping, and the families are hoping, that this will just be a reminder that you have to be cautious at these intersections," says Unified police Lt. Don Hutson.

Police say they are not looking at any criminal charges in the accident, and call it a "tragic event"

No one onboard the TRAX train was injured, even though the train was going full speed.

Brazen burglar takes unusual measures to rob local business

By Amanda Butterfield

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies are looking for a thief who broke into a sporting goods store earlier this month. He got away with thousands of dollars worth of equipment, but how he did it is what's interesting.

"He smashed both windows and ran a chain through the doors, hooked it up to his jeep and ripped the doors open. It's pretty brazen, especially on a main road like this," said Josh Roberts, who works at Milosports.

Roberts was one of the first people called when the alarm went off at the store around 3:45 in the morning on Dec. 19. The store's surveillance cameras caught the suspect breaking into Milosport by using his truck to pull down the doors and windows.

"Look at the tape," Roberts said. "It's an adult, someone who should be responsible, get a job and buy stuff if they need it."

The burglar got away with a lot.

"About 40 pieces of outerwear, approximately $10,000," Roberts said.

But the stunt is costing Milosports even more than that.

" had to fix doors, replace glass; there was damage to the security system, so we had to upgrade that and beef it up," Roberts explained.

Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies have a few leads. The car used -- a white two-door Jeep Cherokee -- is not a common vehicle. Investigators hope someone will recognize it and call them.

The sheriff's office also has another clue.

"Just last week a woman tried to return the clothing that had been stolen, wanted to return it and get a snowboard," said Salt Lake County sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson.

Employees asked the woman about it, and she admitted to buying the clothing out of the trunk of a car in Magna for $50.

"We know the product that's missing, so when it surfaces, like that lady, we're going to find them," Roberts said.

While deputies look for the burglar, those at Milosport are beefing up their security so this won't happen again.

If you recognize the man in the surveillance video, or know anything about the burglary, call the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office at 801-743-7000.
