<description>Another one bites the dust ...

January 17, 2013 - 14:22

Abu Mohammad Al Tahawi, the leader of Jordan's Salafi Jihadist leader in northern Jordan, told Al Jazeera that Abu Musaab Al Zarqawi's brother in-law Mohammad Yassin Jarad was killed in clashes with Syrian troops at Al Mujeimeer military checkpoint in Al Suwaidaa province.

Mohammad Yassin Jarad is a 22 year old Jordanian national who left for Syria four months ago to fight with Jabhet Al Nusra against the Syrian government. Adam Abu Al Mutassem, another Jordanian national, who's an electronic engineer was also killed in the clashes.

Mohammad Jarad's father, Yassin, is behind the Al Najaf operation that killed Mohammad Baqer Al Hakim, one of Iraq's most prominent Shiaa Muslim leaders in 2003.

22 of over 300 Jordanian fighters were killed in fighting in Syria.

<title>US programmer outsourced own job to China, spent workdays on Reddit and Facebook</title>

<description>Smart hero or a fraudulent villain ... it's up to you people to decide ...

 17th of January, 2013

A programmer at a US company outsourced his job to a Chinese contractor for a fraction of his six-figure salary. After handing over his login information, he spent his days on Facebook and perused cat videos while the Chinese firm worked in his name.'Bob,' as he has been dubbed in the media, had his cover blown when an external audit showed that a Chinese company had been logging in under his name.

The audit revealed an active virtual private network (VPN) between 'Bob's' workstation and a firm in Shenyang, China. Suspecting a breach in their security system, the company's executives initially requested an audit from Operations Verizon.

&quot;Evidence even suggested he had the same scam going across multiple companies in the area,&quot; Andrew Valentine of Verizon said, adding that &quot;he earned several hundred thousand dollars a year, and only had to pay the Chinese consulting firm about $50,000 annually.&quot;

Verizon uncovered hundreds of PDF files and invoices exchanged between the Shenyang contractor and 'Bob.' Verizon said that the employee had sent his security credentials by Fedex to the Chinese company so they could log on with his username during working hours.

&quot;Authentication was no problem. He physically FedExed his RSA token to China so that the third-party contractor could log-in under his credentials during the workday. It would appear that he was working an average nine-to-five work day,&quot; Valentine said.

Verizon revealed the Shenyang contractor had been working for 'Bob' for months, and had access to the classified files of the &quot;critical infrastructure company.&quot; This gives rise to the question: What did Bob actually do during his workday?

A look at the employee's Internet browsing history revealed he whiled away the hours updating Facebook, surfing Reddit and perusing the Web for cat videos. And at the end of every workday, 'Bob' would send a personal email to the management to safeguard his integrity.

Official performance figures for the company where 'Bob' worked showed that he was the most productive developer in the building.

'Bob' has been described as &quot;inoffensive, quiet&quot; and talented, and is fluent in several different programing languages.

Unsung hero or couch potato? The Internet lit up with comments after the story broke, with some praising 'Bob's' ingenuity and resourcefulness.

One blogger opined that he was an &quot;American hero,&quot; worthy of a medal. &quot;Where's the problem? He improved his personal profit and the quality and efficiency of his work.&quot;

However, Chinese users of Twitter-style social network Weibo were more critical of 'Bob's' work ethic.

&quot;Learn English and let's find work in US. Why do we have to do the dirty work for such a cheap price in China?&quot; one Weibo commenter wrote.
The real identity of 'Bob' has not yet been revealed, but he reportedly no longer works for the infrastructure company.

<description>Another one bites the dust ...
SAA ain't killing just civilians as pro-Jihadist media outlets seem to indicate.
January 15, 2013 - Amman, Jordan

A leading figure in Jordan's Salafi movement has announced the killing of the legal leader of Jabhat al-Nusra, Jordanian national Riyad Hdeib, known as Abi Hamza, in the Syrian Deraa province.

Mohammad al-Tahawi, the Salafi leader, said Abi Hamza was 32 and was killed in army shelling in Tafas village in Deraa.

Abi Hamza left for Syria over eight months ago, al-Tawahi said. He used to teach at a private school in Amman and was an imam and a preacher at a mosque in West Amman. He also fought against US forces in Iraq, and his brother Adel Hdeib was killed in an operation against US forces there.

It is believed that more than 300 Jordanians are fighting against government forces in Syria, mainly as part of Jabhat al-Nusra in Deraa, Damascus and its countryside. Until now, 18 Salafi Jordanians have been killed in Syria.

<description>This ain't good news for sure. Let's only hope that this is momentary and that the advance of the Wahhabis won't last long ...

Original source:By Rukmini Callimachi And Baba Ahmed, January 14, 2013 11:00 PM

Despite a punishing aerial bombardment by French warplanes, al-Qaida-linked insurgents grabbed more territory in Mali on Monday, seizing a strategic military camp that brought them far closer to the government's seat of power.

Declaring France had &quot;opened the gates of hell&quot; with its assault, the rebels threatened retribution.

&quot;France ... has fallen into a trap much more dangerous than Iraq, Afghanistan or Somalia,&quot; declared Omar Ould Hamaha, a leader of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, one of the rebel groups controlling the north, speaking on French radio network Europe 1.

French fighter jets have been pummeling the insurgents' desert stronghold in the north since Friday, determined to shatter the Islamist domination of a region many fear could become a launch pad for terrorist attacks on the West and a base for co-ordination with al-Qaida in Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan.

The Islamist fighters responded with a counter-offensive Monday, overrunning the garrison town of Diabaly, about 160 kilometres north of Segou, the administrative capital of central Mali, said French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

The French embassy in Bamako immediately ordered the evacuation of the roughly 60 French nationals in the Segou region, said a French citizen who insisted on anonymity out of fear for her safety.

France expanded its aerial bombing campaign, launching airstrikes for the first time in central Mali to combat the new threat. But the intense assault, including raids by gunship helicopters and Mirage fighter jets, failed to halt the advance of the rebels, who were 400 kilometres from the capital, Bamako, in the far south.

      <description>FRANCIS ELLIOTT From:The Australian September 06, 2012 12:00AM

FOREIGN insurgents are leaving the tribal areas of Pakistan, some to join the Syrian rebels, as US drone strikes and dwindling funds make life increasingly uncomfortable for the Taliban's &quot;guest&quot; fighters.

About 250 militants, mainly from Arab nations, have left in the past few months alone, insurgent and tribal sources say. A security official in Islamabad confirmed the trend.

Some have left their families and promised to return, but others have sold all their possessions and left for good. So many have sold their weapons that the price for an automatic rifle is said to have halved in Waziristan.

The departure of Arab fighters to join the Syrian conflict comes after previous outward waves to Libya and Egypt, but a militant commander insisted that the trend would have no large impact on insurgent operations.

&quot; We have a lot of fighters with us and in fact we are happy that they are going back to help our brothers in Arab countries,&quot; he said in a telephone interview from North Waziristan.

Most of the Arabs were allied to the Haqqani network, which is estimated to have about 2,000 fighters and directs most of its efforts against NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency is aware of the insurgent departures, but an official said that there was no information about their destination.

Those with legal travel documents are leaving via Peshawar, while the rest are travelling by the mountainous border areas, crossing the Baluchistan desert and either into Iran by land, or across the Gulf by sea.

For locals in Pakistan's self-administered tribal areas, the departures have brought benefits. &quot; They have shifted their families to the houses of local sympathisers while others have been selling their stuff at very low prices or giving away burners, gas cylinders and utensils to their friends,&quot; a resident of Miranshah, in North Waziristan, said.

In Wana, in South Waziristan, a local said that until recently 300 Arab families lived in and around the main administrative centre, but now few are to be seen. Their departure is depressing the second-hand price of weapons.

&quot;A gun which usually costs 90,000 rupees ($A930) is being purchased at a rate of 40,000 rupees,&quot; a Taliban source said.

The spending power of the Arab militants that once enabled them to rent large compounds and to drive off-road vehicles has dwindled in recent years, and the constant threat of US drone strikes is limiting their movements.

A Pakistani militant said: &quot;They used to buy a lot of fruit and meat, but over the last year or so they have been living hand to mouth. I think they have been facing severe problems to get financial support from Arab countries these days.&quot;

Haq Nawaz Khan, a security analyst in Peshawar, said that the dependence of the Pakistani Taliban on Arab militants, both for recruits and cash, had reduced sharply since 2004. The foreigners, referred to by the Taliban as &quot;guests&quot;, were less able to blend in among tribespeople and so were easier targets for CIA drone attacks.

US drone attacks have intensified recently in the tribal areas, with 40 deaths last month alone caused by missiles fired from the unmanned aircraft.

<description>Original title:Foreign fighters join the battle of Aleppo
At the frontline in Aleppo city, the young fighters are mainly from the countryside of the province. It has not been easy to stand up against the Syrian army, especially when the city did not rise up when rebels stormed some poor neighbourhoods and set up bases. While the majority of the fighters in Aleppo are Syrians, the war has however attracted Arabs who feel obliged to help the opposition who are mainly Sunni Muslims.

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports from Aleppo city.

      <description>August 22nd, 2012.

The son of a late Chechen field commander who waged two post-Soviet wars against Russian forces has been killed while fighting with the rebels in Syria, a Russian Islamist website said Wednesday.

Rustam Gelayev, son of Ruslan Gelayev, &quot;entered into a battle with superior forces of the Alawite regime in a Syrian district, presumably between August 11 and August 13,&quot; the KavkazCenter website said.

&quot;During the fighting, he was martyred,&quot; said the website, which is regularly used by Russian-based Islamic militants to exchange information and has developed a history of providing accurate battlefield reports.

The elder Gelayev was one of the top commanders in Chechnya's first war for independence that killed tens of thousands between 1994 and 1996 and ended with the region winning broader sovereignty within Russia.

The elder Gelayev joined the second war as well, which continued to simmer for years after Russian troops claimed control over Chechnya's main cities in 2000. He was killed in 2004 while leading a group of gunmen in battle against Russian border guards in the neighbouring North Caucasus region of Dagestan.

KavkazCenter said the younger Gelayev was born in 1988 and had lived for a most of his life in Russia before receiving an Islamic education in an unnamed Middle East country. He came to Syria in the summer, said the website, citing unnamed sources and members of the Chechen diaspora in Europe.

      <description>Original headline:
Kurds push for future in post-Assad era

Quoted from the source:Kurds in the northeastern province of al-Hasakeh are working to ensure a future in the new Syria, as battles rage in different parts of country.

While the government is still strong in Hasakeh's city of Qamishli, it is granting more freedom to Kurds.

In their crackdown on protests Security forces reportedly refrained from using excessive force against people in Qamishli, and went as far as allowing the Kurdish flag to fly high over the city.

Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel Hamid is the first international journalist to reach Qamishli.
