Pres. Obama Discusses Debt Ceiling and Gun ControlWASHINGTON, DC<<<VIDEO<<<
Monday, January 14, 2013
In the final press conference of his first term, President Obama pressed Republicans in Congress to raise the debt ceiling."We are not a deadbeat nation" said the President, as he signaled that he's open to using an executive order raise the legal limit the country can borrow to pay its bills.
As the President starts his second term, reducing gun violence is also a top administration priority. Vice President Joe Biden will deliver his task force recommendations this week to the President.

Full Transcript of President Obama'sPress Conference

The following is the complete transcript of President Obama's press conference on Monday in Washington. (Transcript courtesy of Federal News Service. )
{snip}
Q: I wanted to ask about gun violence. Today marks the one-year - or one-month anniversary of the shooting in Newtown, which seemed to generate some momentum for reinstating the assault weapons ban. But there's been fresh opposition to that ban from the NRA, and even Harry Reid has said that he questions whether it could pass Congress. Given that, how hard will you push for an assault weapons ban? And if one cannot pass Congress, what other measures would need to be included in a broad package in order to curb gun violence successfully?
PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, as I said, the vice president and a number of members of my Cabinet went through a very thorough process over the last month, meeting with a lot of stakeholders in this, including the NRA, listened to proposals from all quarters. And they've presented me now with a list of sensible, common-sense steps that can be taken to make sure that the kinds of violence we saw at Newtown doesn't happen again.
I'm going to be meeting with the vice president today. I expect to have a fuller presentation later in the week to give people some specifics about what I think we need to do. My starting point is not to worry about the politics. My starting point is to focus on what makes sense, what works. What should we be doing to make sure that our children are safe and that we're reducing the incidence of gun violence? And I think we can do that in a sensible way that comports with the Second Amendment.
And then members of Congress, I think, are going to have to have a debate and examine their own conscience because, you know, if, in fact - and I believe this is true - everybody across party lines was as deeply moved and - and - and saddened as I was by what happened in Newtown, then we're going to have to vote based on what we think is best.
We're going to have to come up with answers that set politics aside, and that's what I expect Congress to do.
But I - but I - what you can count on is, is that the things that I've said in the past - the belief that we have to have stronger background checks, that we can do a much better job in terms of keeping these magazine clips with high capacity out of the hands of folks who shouldn't have them, an assault weapons ban that is meaningful - that those are things I continue to believe make sense.
(Inaudible) - will all of them get through this Congress? I don't know. But what's uppermost in my mind is making sure that I'm honest with the American people and with members of Congress about what I think will work, what I think is - is something that will make a difference. And to repeat what I've said earlier, if there is a step we can take that will save even one child from what happened in Newtown, we should take that step.
Q: (Off mic.)
PRESIDENT OBAMA: I'll - I'll present the details later in the week.

Gun Policy Experts Discuss Reducing Gun ViolenceMayor Bloomberg and Governor O'Malley Remarks >>>VIDEO<<< WASHINGTON, DC
Monday, January 14, 2013
More than 20 gun policy experts and government officials discuss and recommend federal actions to reduce gun violence in the U.S. at a summit hosted by the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Center for Gun Policy and Research on Monday.
The "Summit on Reducing Gun Violence in America: Informing Policy with Evidence and Analysis" begins with research presentations. Participants then weigh research and data to adopt specific recommendations, which will be announced in a press conference on Tuesday.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, made opening remarks. He offered concrete policy ideas for Congress and the White House.
The first panel focused on gun violence statistics along with a look at gun regulation, especially the Brady bill. The group also looked at public health and safety of guns in society. The next panel talked about keeping guns away from high-risk individuals. The final panel participates in a discussion titled "Gun Policy Lessons from the United States: High-Risk Guns."

While spending on the food stamp program has increased 100 percent under President Barack Obama, the government continues to push more Americans to enroll in the welfare program.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has embraced entire promotional campaigns designed to encourage eligible Americans to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps.

A pamphlet currently posted at the USDA website encourages local SNAP offices to throw parties as one way to get potentially eligible seniors to enroll in the program.

"Throw a Great Party. Host social events where people mix and mingle," the agency advises. "Make it fun by having activities, games, food, and entertainment, and provide information about SNAP. Putting SNAP information in a game format like BINGO, crossword puzzles, or even a 'true/false' quiz is fun and helps get your message across in a memorable way."

The agency's most recent outreach effort targets California, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio and the New York metro area with radio ads.

The ads have been running since March and are scheduled to continue through the end of June - at a cost of $2.5 million - $3 million, CNN Money reported Monday.

WHY IS SEC. CLINTON GIVING HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD?

Mohammed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, just won a presidential election in Egypt described by the White House as a "milestone in Egypt's transition to democracy."
And while no one has brought forth direct ties between Obama and the Muslim Brotherhood, Walid Shoebat and Ben Barrack have pointed to tangible, familial ties between the Islamist organization and the office of Obama's Secretary of State that cannot be ignored. In particular, they've shown that the mother of Huma Abedin, "Hillary Clinton's Deputy Chief of Staff and closest advisor," is not only a member of the Muslim Sisterhood, but also a member of its "Guidance Bureau."
The Muslim Sisterhood is, as its name suggests, a sister organization to the Muslim Brotherhood. Service on the Guidance Bureau of that organization is quite a prestigious position. It is so prestigious that one of the women Abedin's mother serves with is Najla Ali Mahmoud, the wife of Mohammed Morsi. The plot only thickens when we consider the fact that Abedin's brother, Hassan Abedin, has allegedly collaborated with "al-Qaeda godfather Omar Naseef and Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, two of the most influential terror supporters in the world."

There should be an investigation of whether these ties have helped in what the U.S. government has recognized as the Muslim Brotherhood's self-proclaimed goal of " civilization jihad " against America and the West.

Furthermore, the investigation should determine if those ties contributed to Sec. Clinton's " waiver of Congressional restrictions on aid to Egypt, allowing $1.5 billion to be transferred in a highly unusual lump-sum payment." MORE FROM SOURCE

Moroccan Government Demands Arabic Become Standard Part of European School Curriculum

The Moroccan minister for Moroccans Living Abroad, Abdellatif M^aazouz, is pressing governments in Europe to make the teaching of Arabic a standard part of the European school curriculum.

For several months he and his governement have been undertaking a veritable cultural offensive to impose the Arabic language in the educational curricula of European countries, alongside English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and/or Mandarin.

"A special effort is made on the cultural level and on the level of language teaching..." explains the minister. His activism is starting to bear fruit, as he insists the "voice is starting to be heard, especially in France, which will soon announce something in this vein," even going on to enlarge his listening audience to "the EU too".

...The objective is that young people of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations remain attached to Morocco not only in their thoughts and hearts, but through culture," explains the minister.

...For the idea of teaching Arabic as a foreign language to hit the target, the strategy of the minister is simple:
"We sell the idea that there are almost 4 million Moroccans living in Europe, 600 million Arabic-speakers across the world, and that Europeans and others must know this language, even if only to get to know some of their citizens better," he argues.

The Moroccan diplomat's communication tactic is effective since, based on the figures, and highlighting the mutual interests of the Arab and European countries, it reinforces the legitimacy of the demand that Arabic be included in the European educational curricula. MORE

Domesticating Foreign Ads or Translating the Maghreb Foreignization, domestication, transmutation... Karima Bouziane has mastered the vocabulary of her topic. At today's presentation at TALIM, the audience caught on immediately to this specialized world of semiotics , which has to do with the study of signs and communication.

In historical perspective, anyone who takes seriously his country's call to war is a dupe. The enemy is within.
by Henry Makow Ph.D.
Like millions of others, my wife and I have been enjoying the PBS Masterpiece TV series, "Downton Abbey."
Set in an English Manor House during World War One, the costume drama depicts the prevalent attitude that a man's virility and honor are measured by his willingness to die for his country.
There is no questioning the necessity of the war, nor any suspicion that it might be a sinister ruse.
In fact, the only character who is cynical is the villain, Thomas, who engineers a minor injury to escape service.
The young heir to the Estate, Matthew Crawley is paralyzed from the waist down.
This happens when you run into a hail of machine gun fire and mortar shells. He seems surprised by the consequences of his "heroism." He'll never be able to walk, or to procreate.
This is what the Illuminati (Masonic) bankers wanted, to destroy Europe's best.
The Masonic bankers were only a few hundred, and many were getting old. They were better at making deals, having gay sex and performing child sacrifices. They were not capable, all by themselves, of slaughtering millions of strong, young men.
So they patiently concocted a world war. This was also highly profitable. They owned the companies that made the machine guns that killed the young men.
Illuminati Jews and Masons hate Christianity first and foremost. "Christianity is our only real enemy since all the political and economic phenomena of the bourgeois states are only its consequences," Insider C. Rakovsky, told his NKVD interrogator.
Their overall goal of WWI was to bring down Christian civilization. The German, Austrian and Russian monarchies were all destroyed.
Out of the old Christian order would emerge the (satanic) New World Order! ( This is the real meaning of the terms "revolution" and "progressive.")
"The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime," said the British Foreign Secretary Edward Grey, a Freemason who played a major role in engineering this catastrophe.
He got the leaders of France and Russia to sign a secret treaty that stated that if Germany or Austria-Hungary attacked, they would join England to defeat them. Sir Edward concealed the existence of the treaty, and lied to Parliament when asked about it.
The goal of the war was to kill the cream of the new generation of white Christian males. They succeeded: 10 million men were killed and 21 million maimed on both sides. >>>MORE<<<

The Torrent of Laws by Henry Hazlitt

January 1979
All over the United States, if you are reading this in a daylight hour, there is a ceaseless downpour of new laws. Every day some of us, somewhere, are being encumbered or shackled by still more restrictions. There are just too many laws.
But how do we tell how many laws are too many, and which ones are pernicious?
Let us begin with some elementary considerations. A law may be defined as an edict which either forbids you to do something or compels you to do something. Sometimes, it is true, it may be merely a guiding rule which tells you how to do something, or defines procedures or standards, like weights and measures. But such standard-setting laws are few in number. Most laws are prohibitions or compulsions-in short, commands.
Why are laws necessary? They are necessary, first of all, to prevent people from injuring or aggressing against their neighbors; to prevent theft and fraud, vandalism and violence. On the more positive side, they are necessary to lay down rules of action, so that others may know what to expect of us and we of others, so that we may anticipate each other's actions, keep out of each other's way, and work and act so far as possible in cooperation and harmony.
In a modern society, the traffic laws epitomize law in general. When they instruct us to keep on the right side, to drive within a specified speed limit on a given street or highway, to stop at a red light, to signal our intended turns, they may seem to an impatient driver to be restricting his liberty, to be preventing him from getting to his destination in minimum time. But because these restrictions apply to everyone else, they are, if they are well-conceived, helping not only him but all of us to get to our multitudinous destinations in the minimum time in which this can be done smoothly and safely.
How many traffic laws do we need? That is a difficult question to answer numerically. A general traffic code need consist only of a few simple rules, but they could all, it would seem, easily be embodied in a single statute. In any case, if the government confined itself to enacting a code of laws simply intended to prevent mutual aggression and to maintain peace and order, it is hard to see how such a code would run into any great number of laws.
England In 1854
Now let us look at the situation we actually face. In order to get an adequate picture, let us begin by comparing it with the situation as it existed more than a century ago in, for example, England. Let us take the year 1854, when the British philosopher, Herbert Spencer, wrote an essay on "Overlegislation." Some of us are apt to assume that the mid-nineteenth century in England was perhaps the time and place when a great nation came nearest to a laissez-faire regime. Spencer did not find it so. He found the country buried under needless legislation, and piling up more. With the change of a few details, his essay sounds as if it were written yesterday: MORE

Florida voter purge of non-citizens prompts lawsuit from US DOJ and the ACLU.

ACLU sues Florida to stop noncitizen voter purge The American Civil Liberties Union sued Florida on Friday to stop its controversial program designed to purge noncitizen voters from the rolls.

The ACLU says the program, which overwhelmingly targets minorities, needs approval from the federal government under the 1965 Voting Rights Act - a claim already made last week by the U.S. Department of Justice when it ordered Florida to cease the purge.

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner, who is named as a defendant, has said Florida already received permission years ago to clean the voter rolls of noncitizens.

But the ACLU argues that the specific processes for the noncitizen-voter program - a new effort by the state - never received federal approval.

Illegal Immigrants Are Voting in American Elections Hans A. von SpakovskyAugust 4th 2008

In 2005, the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that up to 3 percent of the 30,000 individuals called for jury duty from voter registration rolls over a two-year period in just one U.S. district court were not U.S. citizens. While that may not seem like many, just 3 percent of registered voters would have been more than enough to provide the winning presiden-tial vote margin in Florida in 2000. Indeed, the Cen-sus Bureau estimates that there are over a million illegal aliens in Florida, and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has prosecuted more non-citizen voting cases in Florida than in any other state.

Florida is not unique. Thousands of non-citizens are registered to vote in some states, and tens if not hundreds of thousands in total may be present on the voter rolls nationwide. These numbers are significant: Local elections are often decided by only a handful of votes, and even national elections have likely been within the margin of the number of non-citizens ille-gally registered to vote.

Yet there is no reliable method to determine the number of non-citizens registered or actually voting because most laws to ensure that only citizens vote are ignored, are inadequate, or are systematically undermined by government officials. Those who ignore the implications of non-citizen registration and voting either are willfully blind to the problem or may actually favor this form of illegal voting.

Americans may disagree on many areas of immi-gration policy, but not on the basic principle that only citizens-and not non-citizens, whether legally present or not-should be able to vote in elections.

THE US Department of Justice is to sue Florida over the state's controversial plan to remove non-citizens from its voter rolls.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court in Tallahassee, intensified a legal battle between Barack Obama's administration and Republican leaders in Florida, a crucial swing state for the presidential election in November.

Florida has asked county election officials to remove up to 2600 voters who may be registered illegally. But the federal government's suit says the state's list is "outdated and inaccurate".

Romney camp aims to win over Hispanics WASHINGTON - Hispanic advisers to Mitt Romney have told him that it is vital that he soften the sharp rhetoric on immigration that he adopted during the Republican primary race and that he work to make inroads with one of the fastest-growing segments of the electorate.

Several advisers said it is evident that Romney is getting the message, and there are plans underway to make a push among Hispanic voters, who currently support President Obama by more than a 2-to-1 margin. The Romney campaign recently hired a full-time Hispanic outreach coordinator and has held several strategy meetings in Boston with Hispanic leaders.

May 26, 2012

Obama -Romney electoral votepolls show president leading, with key states in play.As Americans celebrate Memorial Day this weekend, President Obama leads presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney in the all-important electoral college vote count, 247 to 206, according to a widely reported Associated Press report released Saturday. To win the presidency, a candidate must receive at least 270 electoral votes.

If these springtime state-by-state polling numbers hold up through Election Day on Nov. 6, the 2012 presidential election would be decided in seven swing states with a total of 85 electoral votes: Florida (29), Ohio (18), Virginia (13), Colorado (9), Iowa (6), Nevada (6) and New Hampshire (4). Obama carried all the aforementioned states in 2008, but an AP assessment of current polls show them all too close to predict at this point.

Although the AP article made mention of Obama worries in Wisconsin, it is not clear if Wisconsin is being counted as an Obama state or a Romney state in the AP's 247-206 tally. The Real Clear Politics (RCP ) average for polls conducting between May 9 and May 22 shows Obama with a 47.8 to 45 percent advantage over Romney in Wisconsin , with the most recent poll showing Obama with a 6-point lead. The AP article indicates that if embattled GOP Gov. Scott Walker survives the recall vote in June, Romney may have a better chance to win there in November. Recent polls show voters leaning toward keeping Walker in office.

RCP sees the race differently than AP when it comes to assigning states to Obama or Romney - the site's current count shows Obama with 227 electoral votes likely or leaning his way, while Romney has 161 likely or leaning his way.

Conservative MP Larry Miller's suggestion that Canada consider leaving the UN isn't all that crazy.

Conservative MP Larry Miller - yes the same Larry Miller who, in February, compared the long-gun registry to Hitler and Nazis -has stumbled into another controversy.

The Tory backbencher from Ontario is demanding Canada reconsider its membership in the United Nations after the world body criticized the government for its treatment of alleged war criminals, for its food security and for changes to the refugee system.

"The United Nations is an organization that was designed to work collectively to solve the major problems facing the world," Miller said in a statement, according to the National Post .

"If this is the type of action that the UN will be taking then I think that it is high time that we review our participation in the United Nations."

When speaking to reporters, later, Miller added: "The message should be that Canada should review its participation."

While some may have dismissed Miller's comments as absurd, maybe his idea isn't all that crazy.

The British government has recently decided to de-fund four United Nations' agencies and put three others on notice that they could face the same fate unless they improve their performance.

The United States is also taking a critical look at UN funding as part of its overall budget austerity plan with some Republicans calling for a complete withdrawal. MORE

Nine Meals Away From Anarchy Part 2/2
The phrase 'nine meals from anarchy' sounds more like the title of a bad Hollywood movie than any genuine threat.

But that was the expression coined by Lord Cameron of Dillington, a farmer who was the first head of the Countryside Agency - the quango set up by Tony Blair in the days when he pretended to care about the countryside - to describe just how perilous Britain's food supply actually is.
Long before many others, Cameron saw the potential of a real food crisis striking not just the poor of the Third World, but us, here in Britain, in the 21st Century.
The scenario goes like this. Imagine a sudden shutdown of oil supplies; a sudden collapse in the petrol that streams steadily through the pumps and so into the engines of the lorries which deliver our food around the country, stocking up the supermarket shelves as soon as any item runs out.
If the trucks stopped moving, we'd start to worry and we'd head out to the shops, cking up our larders. By the end of Day One, if there was still no petrol, the shelves would be looking pretty thin. Imagine, then, Day Two: your fourth, fifth and sixth meal. We'd be in a panic. Day three: still no petrol.
What then? With hunger pangs kicking in, and no notion of how long it might take for the supermarkets to restock, how long before those who hadn't stocked up began stealing from their neighbours? Or looting what they could get their hands on?
There might be 11 million gardeners in Britain, but your delicious summer peas won't go far when your kids are hungry and the baked beans have run out.
It was Lord Cameron's estimation that it would take just nine meals - three full days without food on supermarket shelves - before law and order started to break down, and British streets descended into chaos.
A far-fetched warning for a First World nation like Britain? Hardly. Because that's exactly what happened in the U.S. in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. People looted in order to feed themselves and their families. Read more I don't think it's 9, closer to 6. JB Thank You JB~

Cannibalism (from Spanish canibal, in connection with cannibalism among the Antillean Caribs) is the act or practice of humans eating other humans. The eating of human flesh is also known as anthropophagy, from Greek: anthropos, "human being"; and phagein, "to eat".
While taken as a synonym for human cannibalism, this term also applies when a non-human life-form consumes human flesh.
In zoology, the term cannibalism is extended to refer to any species consuming members of its own kind.
The term is further extended outside of biological fields and used in a metaphorical sense, such as in aircraft maintenance when parts are "cannibalized" from an already broken plane in order to fix another plane.
Neanderthals are believed to have practiced cannibalism. Among modern humans it has been practiced by various groups. In the past in Europe, Africa, South America, New Zealand,North America, Australia, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, New Guinea, India, Sumatra, and Fiji, usually in rituals connected to tribal warfare. Fiji was once known as the 'Cannibal Isles'. Evidence of cannibalism has been found in the Chaco Canyon ruins of the Anasazi culture.
The reasons for cannibalism may be as follows:
As sanctioned by a cultural normBy necessity in extreme situations of famine Caused by insanity or social deviancy. MORE

http://beautifulnightmare-killumbus.blogspot.com/2012/05/since-1946-all-over-love-of.html
The era of antibiotic growth promotion began in 1946 with the recognition of substantial growth responses to the inclusion of streptomycin in the feed of chickens. In 1949 it was shown that pigs and chickens consuming a diet supplemented with the dried mycelial mass recovered from the fermentation of Streptomyces aureofaciens had significantly improved daily gain in bodyweight. At a time when livestock management was changing rapidly from low-performance, high-morbidity, free-range farming to more controlled and intensive husbandry, and when post-war demands on increased food production were high, the discovery of an unexpected way to accelerate growth was received with enormous interest
and enthusiasm by scientists and the public. In April 1950 it was front page news in New
York and London. http://www.animalhealthalliance.org.au/files/animalhealth/information/The%20Role%20of%20enteric%20antibiotics%20in%20livestock%20production.pdf
05langston Modern Meat: Synthetic Hormones, Livestock, and Consumers in the Post-WWII Era Nancy Langston UW...

Antibiotics and the Animal Industry
Industrial farms have been mixing antibiotics into livestock feed since 1946, when studies showed that the drugs cause animals to grow faster and put on weight more efficiently, increasing meat producers' profits. 6 Today antibiotics are routinely fed to livestock, poultry, and fish on industrial farms to promote faster growth and to compensate for the unsanitary conditions in which they are raised. 7
USA - Livestock drug addicts
It's no secret that America has a drug problem-so perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that our livestock have one as well. Antibiotics are a major part of the conventional meat industry, and the drugs aren't just used to treat sick animals-they're also given regularly in feed to help growth promotion of pigs, chickens and cattle. According to a recent study by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), some 80% of the antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used in farm animals, not in human beings, and 90% of that amount is dispensed through feed or water. All those drugs can help lead to the rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and those hard to treat bugs in turn can infect human beings. Some 100,000 Americans die each year from hospital-acquired infections that are resistant to most antibiotics. Antibiotics are a limited resource-the more they're used, the faster bacteria will evolve to beat them-and by using so many of our drugs on farms rather than the hospital, we may be wasting them. F DA Issues Voluntary Guidance To Stem Factory Farm Antibiotics
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took long-overdue steps yesterday to curb the overuse of antibiotics in food producing animals which has been definitively linked to the crisis of antibiotic resistance in humans by numerous health organizations worldwide.
Laura Rogers , the director of the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming , told me that " his is the most sweeping action the agency has undertaken in this area, as this covers all antibiotics used in meat and poultry production that are important to human health." Evidence linking antibiotic resistance in humans to overuse of antibiotics in animal farms primarily to promote animal growth - not to treat illness - has been mounting for decades. The FDA recognized the problem more than four decades ago, attempted to address it in 1977, but ultimately took little definitive action.

So public health advocates have been pushing for years to get the government to restrict the use of human antibiotics in farm animals-at least for non-therapeutic purposes. But the meat industry has long opposed any regulations on drug use, claiming that antibiotic-resistant bacteria have far more to do with overuse in human beings than on the farm. Given the political power of the ag lobby, it shouldn't be surprising that they've usually won those battles.

But the tide may be turning. On January 4, the FDA announced that farmers and ranchers had to restrict their use of a class of antibiotics known as cephalosporins-commonly used in humans to treat strep throat and bronchitis-in cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys because those habits may have helped lead to the rise of resistant bacteria.

rBGH
Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, also called recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rBST). This is a genetically engineered hormone that is injected into dairy cows to increase their milk production. Cows injected with rBGH have shorter life spans and are much more likely to suffer from udder infections. rBGH is only legal in three countries: the United States, South Africa, and Mexico. RBGH has been banned in Canada, the European Union and elsewhere because of inadequate testing and some evidence that it leads to cancer.See the rBGH page in the Issues section for more information. rBGH-Free or rBST-Free
rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) is a genetically engineered growth hormone that is injected into dairy cows to artificially increase their milk production. The hormone has not been properly tested for safety. Milk labeled "rBGH-Free" is produced by dairy cows that never received injections of this hormone. Organic milk is rBGH free. (rBST stands for recombinant bovine somatotropin.) See the rBGH page in the Issues section for more information.

Addicted to Antibiotics
It's no secret that factory farms use unconscionable amounts of antibiotics when fattening up animals for market. In Germany, however, veterinarians play a crucial role in the abuse. Many are getting rich in the process, but the risks to both human and animals are many

When Almera the cow suffers from twisted bowel or Avatar the llama shows signs of tuberculosis, Bj"orn Seelig is on the scene. He is a veterinarian in the Taunus Mountains, north of Frankfurt, and one of Germany's best-known veterinarians. He demonstrates his dexterity in an afternoon television show on Germany's VOX channel.

The program, the name of which can be translated as "People, Animals and Doctors," depicts touchingly idyllic scenes of country veterinarians striding across springtime meadows in their rubber boots, hard at work next to grazing lambs. Strong medications are rarely used in this television world.

The idyllic scenes are deceptive. Many of Seelig's fellow veterinarians, with access to an entire battery of drugs on the shelves of their practices, take a completely different approach. In the past, veterinarians, including those in Seelig's practice, used these drugs in abundance and on a large scale. Indeed, a year and a half ago, three veterinarians in his practice were ordered to pay fines totalling EUR90,000 ($117,000).

They had sold huge quantities of drugs, some of which were not approved, and dispensed dozers of liters of medications to animals to which they should never have been administered. Investigators with the public prosecutor's office in the western city of Wiesbaden called the operation a "pharmacy on wheels." Antibiotics were allegedly stored on pallets. A former employee told investigators at the time that the veterinary clinic was essentially a mail-order operation for drugs, and that the pharmaceutical industry had expressed its gratitude by giving the clinic huge discounts.

'Bigger Profits than Cocaine Dealers'
"Some veterinarians' profit margins are bigger than those of cocaine dealers," says Nicki Schirm, who has been a veterinarian in the state of Hesse for more than 25 years. When a veterinarian finds a sick chick among 20,000 other chicks, he treats the discovery as justification to preventively treat the entire flock with antibiotics, says Rupert Ebner, a veterinarian from the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt. "Nowadays, flock or herd health monitoring is the code name for the generous administration of drugs," says Ebner. In many cases, he adds, fake diagnoses are used to provide a justification for the use of antibiotics.
In large veterinary practices, profits from the sale of drugs can account for up to 80 percent of revenues. This is mainly due to the volume discounts offered by the pharmaceutical industry and the sweet privilege known as the right to dispense -- a special provision for the pharmaceutical monopoly. For more than 150 years, veterinarians have been allowed to both prescribe and sell medications -- with almost no supervision whatsoever.

   http://www.cspinet.org/ar/antibiotics_jeopardy.html

Q: Which foods are most likely to carry antibiotic-resistant bacteria?
A: Meat and poultry are the most likely candidates, because the animals are being fed the antibiotics and their meat can become contaminated with bacteria when they're slaughtered.
In theory, resistant bacteria could also end up in any food, even fruits and vegetables, if the bacteria get into the environment through the animals' waste, and the waste ends up in fertilizer.

Q: How likely is meat to harbor drug-resistant bacteria?
A: In October, a study by the Food and Drug Administration found that 20 percent of supermarket samples of ground beef, pork, chicken, and turkey were contaminated with Salmonella . Even more worrisome, 84 percent of the Salmonella were resistant to at least one antibiotic and half were resistant to at least three antibiotics. Sixteen percent were resistant to the drug of choice for treating Salmonella infections in children.
So we not only have to worry about getting Salmonella poisoning from food if we don't prepare it properly. We also have to worry that it would be harder to treat food poisoning because the Salmonella is antibiotic-resistant.

A federal health official's ruling has cleared the way for 50 different types of cancer to be added to the list of sicknesses covered by a $4.3 billion fund set up to compensate and treat people exposed to the toxic smoke, dust and fumes in the months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Readers' CommentsShare your thoughts. Post a Comment >> Read All Comments (13) >> The decision, released on Friday, came as a vindication for hundreds and perhaps thousands of people who have claimed - often in the face of resistance from public health officials - that their cancers were caused by their exposure to the dust cloud and debris thrown up by the attacks.

It will allow not only rescue workers but also volunteers, residents, schoolchildren and passers-by to apply for compensation and treatment for cancers developed in the aftermath of the attacks. The cancers will not be officially added to the list of covered illnesses until after a period of public comment and review that could last several months.

The decision, by Dr. John Howard, director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, comes despite a current absence of evidence linking the attack to cancer, causing some skepticism among epidemiologists. It also reduces the amount of money for people suffering from ailments more conclusively linked to the Sept. 11 attacks, namely lung and other respiratory sicknesses.

And it poses a number of logistical challenges, since it will be difficult if not impossible to separate people who developed cancer as a result of ground zero from those who would have gotten the disease anyway, and because many cancer diagnoses are likely to be made years after the deadline for applying for compensation passes in 2016.

Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, Democrat of New York and a primary sponsor of the 2010 law that set up the fund, said that she recognized those concerns but that the decision was the correct one. "I think it's an important statement that the country's going to take care of the workers and people who are there to save the lives of the people of the city," she said.

One cancer patient who typifies the fraught nature of the decision, Ernest K. Matthews, 62, said he developed lung cancer in 2008 and had part of his right lung cut out. He was part of a crew that cleaned elevators for the Merrill Lynch building next to ground zero after the terrorist attack. He was also a smoker.

But he said he had been able to walk up six flights of stairs carrying a heavy tool bag without catching his breath before Sept. 11. He developed breathing problems soon after, he said.

"It's a good day," Mr. Matthews said Friday. "Look at all the people that suffered and lost their lives, sacrificing for the cleanup. It took so long for them to decide to help the people that were suffering."

Dr. Howard's decision represented an about-face from assurances by the federal government immediately after the terrorist attacks that there was nothing in the air to be worried about. In July 2011, Dr. Howard himself said there was not enough scientific or medical evidence to link cancer to Sept. 11.

But in a lengthy report explaining his decision, Dr. Howard said that a New York Fire Department study published last fall in the British medical journal The Lancet, which showed that firefighters exposed to ground zero toxic substances had about 20 percent higher rate of cancer than firefighters who were not exposed, had provided a strong foundation for a conclusion that some cancers had been caused by exposure to the World Trade Center debris.

Beyond the Lancet study, he said, he had relied on recommendations made in late March by a scientific and technical advisory committee consisting of experts from the fields of cancer, environmental medicine, toxicology and epidemiology as well as neighborhood activists and union officials. He fully adopted the committee's recommendation that 14 broad categories of cancer, encompassing 50 specific types, should be deemed as related to the attacks.
