Overdevelopment on Long Island: Preservation a Failure

Long Island used to have some of the cleanest drinking water in the nation. Beautiful forests of Pine used to cover much of the eastern 2/3 of the island. But now that's all gone. Our aquifers are now polluted with the consequences of overdevelopment. Our Pine Forests, often referred to as "Pine Barrens" are so broken up by development, the natural ecosystems and shaping force of fire are interrupted. Politicians and environmental groups will often pat themselves on the back for a "job well done". But really very little has been preserved. In comparison to the Pinelands of Southern New Jersey, the Long Island Pine Barrens region is like 1/50th the size. The largest unbroken forest on Long Island is just under 6,000 acres! And the building just keeps going on. Unlike in southern NJ, where Counties and towns are always preserving new land every year, open space purchases are often at a turtle's pace here on LI. Riverhead is one such town negatively impacted by overdevelopment. Long after Tanger Outlets the development along Route 58 continues. It seems the Town of Riverhead is intent in not having one tree left standing in that corridor. Small parcels of Pine Barrens which remain will be gone for good real soon, as plans for yet more stores are built. Meanwhile the traffic from tourists is choking the roads, crime is skyrocketing as the illegal alien population brought here for these low wage jobs, brings gangs, prostitution, among other things into town. This is happening all across what used to be LI's last remaining area of peace. Well it will be no more fairly soon. Long Island will remain one of the best examples of poor planning and overdevelopment in this nation and perhaps the world. Don't make the same mistake!

NICE and MESSY: Bus service rapidly deteriorates in Nassau County

What was starting to go well this summer has taken a significant downturn. The former MTA Long Island Bus system, now renamed NICE (Nassau Inter County Express) and run by Veolia, has become a very low budget, low maintanance operation. The buses do not appear to be cleaned at all, and the engines, even on the newest buses (the 1800s) sound awful. It seems there is little, if any cleaning, or maintanance of the buses. There's all kinds of trash on the floor, magic marker on the seats, and dirt on the interior of the buses. Then there's missing buses and breakdowns. Nassau County refuses to adequately fund it's bus operations. This was part of the reason the MTA left at the end of 2011, and Veolia is probably now finding out the same thing. As a regular rider of the system I can tell you service has been anything but nice this September. Bad enough the buses are now often 20 minutes late or more, but I feel like I need to take a shower everytime I ride them. I invite Ed Mangano and the ambivalant Nassau County Legislature to spend just one week riding these buses. Try dealing with conditions riders and employees have to put up with! How come Westchester, NYC, and most parts of New Jersey can provide clean and reliable bus service, but not Nassau?

Cmmon even the NYC Subway makes NICE Bus look like a garbage dump!

Disembarking the train at Riverhead, midday. Day laborers loitering on the wheelchair ramp and hanging around. Imagine having to wait for this train at night? Riverhead Town has failed to do anything about the illegals who loiter around here, day and night. Because of these men loitering, businesses like the Off Main Cafe near the tracks have went out of business, because people are scared off by the loitering.

Oddly enough, when Americans protest in front of a puppy shop that uses cruel Puppy Mills in the same town, the police show up. So Americans cant stand on a street, but illegals can and get drunk while they are at it.

Stand or Fall? Illegals terrorizing Long Islanders

The loitering and public intoxication on the streets of many of our towns is just the tip of the iceberg. Read the police blotters and see how many of these illegals are involved doing crimes in our communities. They are not here for a better life, they are here to break the law, time and time again, while elected officials and the police do little to remove these dangerous people from society. This is similar to how Mexico operates today, the police and politicians are all bought and paid for by the rich who hire these guys, and pay them little, and anyone who tries to enforce the law is threatened. So they commit crime, as well as turn to social welfare programs. The future of our country is bleak, unless something is done to remove all the corrupt politicians and elect people who put the law, and not the interests of the wealthy, first.

MTA LIRR screw up in Hicksville: Hundreds dumped off train

The MTA, which runs the LIRR, has been doing a poor job of doing it lately. Many delays cannot be avoided, but it's how it's dealt with, that causes the problems. On Tuesday, August 7, 2012, the 7:39am eastbound train from Penn station to Ronkonkoma, was cancelled in Hicksville at 8:30am. This "reverse peak" train carries alot of employees and workers who work in Hicksville and points east. Many commute to jobs in Farmingdale and Deer Park office complexes. As it is, this train is crowded because of the lack of eastbound trains in the morning, as the train before this one leaves Penn before 5:30AM! The MTA has failed to improve service for the growing number of employees that travel eastbound in the morning, despite complaints. So when a police investigation of a suspicious package at Farmingdale temporarily shut down the Ronkonkoma line for less than an hour, the management decided to cancel this crowded eastbound train in Hicksville, instead of having it proceed east and wait for the investigation to complete. They kicked everyone, hundreds of passengers, off the train to create dangerous crowding conditions at the staircases. At street level 5 buses pulled in, which were schedued for track work about an hour later. The LIRR decided that having this well patronized train to travel east would delay this track work, so they had hundreds of people crowd around these buses. I doubt they were enough for all those people, as I headed back upstairs and caught a Port Jefferson train further east. The MTA, which runs the LIRR, has been doing a poor job of doing it lately. Many delays cannot be avoided, but it's how it's dealt with, that causes the problems. Metro-North has improved it's reverse peak service, so much so, areas in Westchester such as White Plains, and Stamford in Connecticut, have become huge employment centers full of office buildings and companies that have headquartered there. But The Long Island Railroad has done little, if anything, for reverse commuters. Both escalators at Hicksville are broken, forcing people to climb the stairs. Often the elevators are also broken, leaving the disabled stranded. Since the MTA walked away from Nassau Bus service, they also walked away from providing MTA buses during LIRR service disruptions, relying on private companies, which can provide anything from coach buses to un-air conditioned school buses. The MTA needs to start taking LIRR service seriously. Dont cancel crowded trains. Give the LIRR its fair share of service, including restoring year round Greenport trains, which are getting more crowded. But I feel it won't be from the MTA, a City-Centric corrupt organization, but Long Island's own Transportation Authority, to fix the problems here.

The MTA has shown time and time again a neglect for Long Islanders. The LIRR is more unreliable and dirtier than the Metro-North railroad, also run by the MTA. They are both run by the MTA, yet Metro-North always gets treated better. Metro-North has improved it's reverse peak service, so much so, areas in Westchester such as White Plains, and Stamford in Connecticut, have become huge employment centers full of office buildings and companies that have headquartered there. But The Long Island Railroad has done little, if anything, for reverse commuters. While track space does limit growth, the LIRR could still add a few more trains, at the expense of delaying just a few peak trains by reducing their speeds by running behind locals, instead of using both mainline tracks. Traditional peak ridership, that is commuters working in NYC, has actually declined slightly on the LIRR, while reverse peak and off peak have gone up. Metro-North's ability to improve service has resulted in Metro-North OVERTAKING the LIRR as the busiest commuter railroad. And this is all the MTA's doing.

In December, the MTA walked away from operating bus service in Nassau County, after the county refused to pay the MTA $36 Million a year to operate the bus service. While that was more the county's fault, the new company that replaced the MTA, Veolia has so far been able to operate most of the service at a much lower cost. There's still problems because the county decreased its bus operating subsidy from last year.

But getting back to the LIRR, videos like these show the MTA's neglect for Long Island Railroad. Both escalators at Hicksville are broken, forcing people to climb the stairs. Often the elevators are also broken, leaving the disabled stranded. Since the MTA walked away from Nassau Bus service, they also walked away from providing MTA buses during LIRR service disruptions. The coach buses stored at the Mitchell Field depot were taken back by the MTA, punishing LIRR riders. Fortunately most of the buses shown in this video were coach buses, contracted from various private operators. Sometimes they use un-air conditioned school buses!

The MTA needs to start taking LIRR service seriously. Dont cancel crowded trains. Give the LIRR its fair share of service, including restoring year round Greenport trains, which are getting more crowded. But I feel it won't be from the MTA, a City Chester-Centric corrupt organization, but Long Island's own Transportation Authority, to fix the problems here.

After notifying the mall last week of the problem, it still persists. The left turn from Ring Road West, to the Main Gate Road of the mall is backed up due to a change in the traffic signal. The light used to provide around close to a minute green time with a 15 second left arrow. Now only one side goes at a time, and the exiting mall traffic is limited to a 13 second green arrow before going to red. This is causing delays, often backing up past the movie theater. This video was taken on a weekday when the mall traffic is fairly light, on weekends the delays can really add up. This is also throwing a wrench into the NICE Bus schedules, some buses are finding other ways around the jam as you can see in this vid.

FIX YOUR TRAFFIC LIGHTS ROOSEVELT FIELD!!

NICE Buses Breaking Down

Riding the buses in Nassau County is anything but NICE this summer. Many of the older buses are suffering from the poor maintanance the most, and are dropping like flies. I've been told many have had to run with no air conditioning despite the extreme heat, because otherwise the engines will overheat. It's no wonder, since Ed Mangano and the Nassau County Legislature headed by Peter Schmitt (who has no problem spending taxpayers money on having County Police fix his flat tire) puts so little into the bus system. The new company, Veolia, has cut maintanance personnel, many of the older buses aren't even getting the parts they need. So in the end buses are dropping like flies, and frankly, a danger to operate. And now the breakdowns are getting so numerous, many runs are going missing, leaving passengers waiting in the hot sun to try and squeeze onto the next bus.

How much longer can Mangano and Nassau County get away with treating the bus system, riders, and employees, like this? And how can Veolia have money to install cameras on every bus, at $700-$800 per bus, but not for maintanance so these buses don't break down? These breakdowns are a hidden, sneaky service cut. Just today, June 22, 2012, 3 buses broke down. Two on the busy n27 bus route never even arrived, leaving people to wait and wonder.

One thing's for sure, it's gonna be a long, hot, miserable summer for NICE bus riders.

The situation within the village of Westbury,NY located in Central Nassau County is getting very much out of hand. Businesses who have been here for a long time, such as the locksmith and Post Cafe, have closed up shop, while yet more money wiring "multiservices" and bodegas keep popping up. The groups of men loitering seem to be growing and at all times of day.

The Village seems to openly proclaim themselves as a Sanctuary City, which can easily be seen on their Facebook page.

Like many politicians, they make no distinction between legal immigrants and Americans of Latin decent, and the illegal immigrants who have decided to take over the Village. When trying to post comments about the loitering and vagrancy in the town, they removed my comment and said my speech was offensive and I quote

"Note on Comments: There have been a number of obnoxious and offensive posts posted on a number of the items here over the past several days, relating to the linked articles on the growing Latino population on LI. Offensive posts will not be tolerated and will be deleted. The purpose of this page is to share information with the residents of the village, and to get legitimate and respectful feedback. Negative comments or different opinions will not be deleted simply due to their negativity, so long as they are not objectionable or offensive. This has always been the case, and it will remain the case."

Basically my voice is being silenced, just because I want the law enforced! I'm not asking the village to do the job of I.C.E., just to crack down on the loitering, public intoxication, littering, and overcrowded homes that are already against village code! I guess the Mayor and the Village Administration dont care what people driving through think when they see the men loitering and drinking, and turn a blind eye to the overcrowding, trash, and crime these guys bring, because they'd rather cater to special interests than quality of life in the village.

I will not be silenced. It is time for others to join me and TAKE A STAND against this destruction of our town. Its not that I have a problem with diversity, just come here legally and respect the community! These people coming to Westbury do neither and just treat the street like a toilet and a dumpster. Please join me in my fight!

Hicksville: Yet another casualty of illegal immigration!

Billy Joel's hometown has changed much since he grew up here. It's no longer a quiet, peaceful suburb. It has been undergoing neglent and urban decay, and the illegals have been drawn to it. There's trash everywhere, empty energy drink bottles and lottery scratch offs being the most common, left by these men loitering around. There's also bodegas popping up, and grafitti everywhere.

The train station area seems to see the worst of it, but it has now spread northward past the Broadway Mall. Many businesses now sit vacant, a casualty of a poor economy and a declining neighborhood. It seems the whole Central part of Nassau County, from here on to Westbury and south to Hempstead and Freeport has become a cesspool of urban decay, vagrancy, and illegal immigration. Why can't people open their eyes and see what is happening around them, and throw these politicians out of office?

Memorial Day 2012 in Westbury and New Cassel

It is a day to remember those who have died defending our country. Yet spending the day in the Westbury area one has to wonder, just what have they died for? They fought to defend our liberty and our laws, and yet politicians undermine that by allowing illegal aliens to infest our communities.

On warm, humid summer days like this we no longer feel safe taking a stroll in our communities, with men loitering around and drinking. Many are parts of dangerous gangs, such as MS-13, 18th Street, and Surenos. Yet politicians like the North Hempstead Town Supervisor, Jon Kaiman, and Westbury Village Mayor Peter Cavallaro turn a blind eye to the presence of these illegals. They have allowed the laws they sweared they'd uphold, to be broken. These officials have undermined everything our soldiers have fought for, and allowed these criminals to roam our communities and terrorize the citizens.

The end result is that people and businesses are now leaving these communities, because the patrons no longer feel safe visiting. If they are serious about revitalizing Westbury and New Cassel, then why haven't they cleaned up the illegal alien problem? Well, we all do know why, and that is because the rich elite that use the services of these day laborers, in mainly landscaping and construction, pay off these elected officials to allow the men to move into certain communities. Think about this next time you vote. Does the person your voting for care more about the law, or what the wealthy think?

Nassau's other side: New Cassel

Despite being one of the nation's wealthiest counties, there is a growing underclass moving here, brought here by the demand for cheap labor for landscaping jobs, as well as the lax enforcement of various housing codes and immigration law.

Many communities are now suffering with this invasion. New Cassel is one of them. While it was never a great community, things have gotten worse in the past 5-10 years. Lying just east of Westbury (often considered part of Westbury), and west of Hicksville in central Nassau County, this hamlet is located close to many other wealthier areas, such as Old Westbury and Garden City.

The Town of North Hempstead refuses to enforce proper housing codes in the hamlet of New Cassel, resulting in many overcrowded homes full of mostly men, who are mainly in the country illegally, to work as day laborers, doing mainly landscaping and construction. This has resulted in a depressed economy where more and more businesses are cutting costs and hiring these men who will work for much less, and it's hard for businesses who play by the rules to compete, forcing them to hire illegals as well. The town of North Hempstead only cares about the wealthy in the hamlets on the north shore, and looks the other way on enforcement in New Cassel because the wealthy want to use the cheap labor.

This bus ride starts along Union Ave and continues east along Prospect, you can see the men loitering around, some wearing gang colors and beat up tricked out old Hondas with out of state plates, indicating these men are driving without a license. Often things look much worse than this, especially at the peak of the summer when there can be hundreds loitering around intoxicated.

Sadly the problems are spreading into Westbury and even moreso east into Hicksville. The rich know these men have no standards, if you look closely at the beginning of the video you can see they are sitting on top of eachother in the cab of a landscaping truck. This is depressing what was once a great county to live in, and sadly, as standards get even lower things will get worse. It's a vicious cycle that can actually be stopped if we demand our local governments enforce the law. Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the Town of North Hempstead board are corrupt and need to be voted out!
