This is a very special project for me, It has been an honour to collaborate with Dan on this amazing project. Mr Dan Winters (danwintersphoto.com) is a renowned photojournalist, creating portraits of luminaries such as Barak Obama, Niel Young, Tupak Shakur to name but a very few, the list is incredible. His work documenting the final launches of Discovery, Endeavour and Atlantis is some of the most beautiful images i have ever seen, it is now on sale on Amazon;
amazon.co.uk/Last-Launch-Discovery-Endeavor-Atlantis/dp/029273963X

During composing this piece my father was ill with cancer, he passed away just recently and in my own small way i'd like to dedicate this to the memory of him and the fragility and beauty of life.

It has truly been an honour to work with Dan, he allowed me the creative freedom to create as i wanted with little intervention. And of course a big cheers to the Mars Rover Curiosity crew who are inspiring us all with their work.

A Year in Jail for Not Believing in God? How Kentucky is Persecuting Atheists

In Kentucky, a homeland security law requires the state's citizens to acknowledge the security provided by the Almighty God--or risk 12 months in prison.

November 21, 2012

In Kentucky, a homeland security law requires the state's citizens to acknowledge the security provided by the Almighty God--or risk 12 months in prison.
The law and its sponsor, state representative Tom Riner, have been the subject of controversy since the law first surfaced in 2006, yet the Kentucky state Supreme Court has refused to review its constitutionality, despite clearly violating the First Amendment's separation of church and state.

"This is one of the most egregiously and breathtakingly unconstitutional actions by a state legislature that I've ever seen," said Edwin Kagin, the legal director of American Atheists', a national organization focused defending the civil rights of atheists. American Atheists' launched a lawsuit against the law in 2008, which won at the Circuit Court level, but was then overturned by the state Court of Appeals.

The law states, "The safety and security of the Commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God as set forth in the public speeches and proclamations of American Presidents, including Abraham Lincoln's historic March 30, 1863, presidential proclamation urging Americans to pray and fast during one of the most dangerous hours in American history, and the text of President John F. Kennedy's November 22, 1963, national security speech which concluded: "For as was written long ago: 'Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.'"

The law requires that plaques celebrating the power of the Almighty God be installed outside the state Homeland Security building--and carries a criminal penalty of up to 12 months in jail if one fails to comply. The plaque's inscription begins with the assertion, "The safety and security of the Commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God."

Tom Riner, a Baptist minister and the long-time Democratic state representative, sponsored the law.

"The church-state divide is not a line I see," Riner told The New York Times shortly after the law was first challenged in court. "What I do see is an attempt to separate America from its history of perceiving itself as a nation under God."

A practicing Baptist minister, Riner is solely devoted to his faith--even when that directly conflicts with his job as state representative. He has often been at the center of unconstitutional and expensive controversies throughout his 26 years in office. In the last ten years, for example, the state has spent more than $160,000 in string of losing court cases against the American Civil Liberties Union over the state's decision to display the Ten Commandments in public buildings, legislation that Riner sponsored.

Although the Kentucky courts have yet to strike down the law, some judges have been explicit about its unconstitutionality.

"Kentucky's law is a legislative finding, avowed as factual, that the Commonwealth is not safe absent reliance on Almighty God. Further, (the law) places a duty upon the executive director to publicize the assertion while stressing to the public that dependence upon Almighty God is vital, or necessary, in assuring the safety of the commonwealth," wrote Judge Ann O'Malley Shake in Court of Appeals' dissenting opinion.

This rational was in the minority, however, as the Court of Appeals reversed the lower courts' decision that the law was unconstitutional.

Last week, American Atheists submitted a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court to review the law.

Riner, meanwhile, continues to abuse the state representative's office, turning it into a pulpit for his God-fearing message.

"The safety and security of the state cannot be achieved apart from recognizing our dependence upon God," Riner recently t old Fox News.

"We believe dependence on God is essential. ... What the founding fathers stated and what every president has stated, is their reliance and recognition of Almighty God, that's what we're doing," he said.

Videos Show 'Dehumanizing' Treatment of Teen Ashley Smith

Corrections Canada had tried to stop videos from being made public

CBC News Posted: Oct 31, 2012 9:05 PM ET. Last Updated: Oct 31, 2012 10:01 PM ET.

Videos of teenager Ashley Smith taken in the months before she died in a prison cell show the teen was subjected to "degrading and dehumanizing" treatment, her family's lawyer told a coroner's hearing in Toronto Wednesday.

Julian Falconer led the hearing through the video clips shot prior to Oct. 19, 2007, the day the New Brunswick teen died from strangulation after tying ligatures to her neck in her cell at Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ont.

Corrections Canada had gone to court to try to block the videos from being made public, but lost the case. Falconer is now fighting to have the videos played in front of a coroner's jury.

"To people who think this can't happen in Canada to a mentally ill 19-year-old, you know a picture speaks a thousand words. I'm embarrassed to be Canadian when I look at that video," the lawyer said outside the hearing.

In one of the videos, the 19-year-old is seen on an RCMP plane being transferred from a correctional service psychiatric facility in Saskatchewan to one in Quebec.

Smith is wearing two mesh hoods to stop her from spitting.

The RCMP co-pilot can be seen duct-taping her hands together and then to her seat. He then threatens to duct-tape Smith's face if she does not behave.

"This is how the does business in transferring a victim," Falconer said.

Another video shows Smith tied to a gurney at Joliette Prison in Quebec after she tried to cut herself in her cell. She is surrounded by corrections officers in full riot gear, including shields.

One of the officers places a shield on Smith's torso while a nurse injects her with a tranquillizer, described by Falconer as a "chemical restraint." She received five more injections over the next nine hours, the hearing was told.

Another video taken on July 26, 2007, shows half a dozen guards in riot gear entering Smith's cell at 5:32 a.m. and telling her she had to have two injections in preparation for a transfer to another facility. Smith objects mildly but, surrounded by the guards, she presents her arm for the shots.

Falconer said a correctional service inquiry board had determined Smith agreed to the shots of her "own free will and without force being used." Falconer pointed out that a psychiatrist had only recommended drugs be administered to Smith if required and said the "abuse" of the rules contributed to her death.

Smith was first incarcerated at the age of 15 for throwing crab apples at a postal worker.

She racked up six years worth of additional time behind bars for infractions while in youth custody - so many that she eventually ended up serving time in the federal adult prison system.

During the year she spent in federal custody, Smith was transferred 17 times between nine institutions in five provinces.

The correctional service is arguing that presiding coroner Dr. John Carlisle has no jurisdiction to investigate how Smith was treated in prisons in other provinces and that the videos should not be shown to the jury.

The agency is fighting to narrow the scope of the inquest into Smith's death, claiming the coroner has no jurisdiction to delve into the federal prison system.

Falconer called the position absurd.

"Don't let them get away with it," he told Carlisle.

"If you mistreat someone often enough, surely that will affect how they behave."

Focus of inquest questioned

Carlisle wants a broadly focused inquest that looks, among other things, into how the teenager was treated after repeated episodes of self-harm.

Lawyers for the correctional service and three Ontario doctors involved in Smith's treatment argued Carlisle's approach oversteps his legal and constitutional authority.

"This has become an investigation into how treated Ms. Smith, and not an investigation into her death," correctional service lawyer Nancy Noble said.

Carlisle wants to turn the inquest "into full-blown inquiry into operations and management of ," she said.

The agency wants the inquest limited to Smith's time at Grand Valley Institution, said Lori Pothier, a spokeswoman for Corrections Canada.

The hearing was adjourned until Nov. 13.

The coroner's inquest is set to officially start with a jury in January.

10:13 AM, Oct 26, 2012

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- A family in Woodstock, who just lost their home of 20 years to foreclosure and are preparing to move out, lost even more on Wednesday.

And it was all because they inadvertently triggered what they now call "mayhem" when they posted a craigslist ad Tuesday night.

Their online post was just a well-meaning ad for a giveaway of furniture and other household items in their driveway outside the small house, a giveaway scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

But big crowds showed up early, while the family was out, breaking into the house and taking practically everything inside, in part because the way that the craigslist ad was written gave them the idea that everything on the property was up for grabs.

Wednesday night, Michael Vercher walked 11Alive's Jon Shirek through his family's almost empty soon-to-be former home.

"Well, when we got to the house, I mean, pretty much -- this," he said as he stepped from the foyer into the living room.

Their home -- ransacked, ravaged, raked over.

Almost everything inside -- gone.

"They came in and just tore the place up," he said.

People who responded to the family's craigslist ad showed up at the house earlier than 10 a.m., before Vercher arrived there from work to supervise the giveaway.

And when he drove up to the house, he said, they had already broken into it, helping themselves to almost everything inside.

And as the family was calling 911, he could not stop them.

"Everyone was inside the house; they were taking out items," he said. "There were cars around the block. It was like ants in and out of the house."

He spoke of how they took, from inside the house, the only items that the family wanted to take with them as they moved out -- family keepsakes, and all their clothes -- everything but a few of their books, which were left scattered across the carpet.

Vercher's fiancee, Dana Lamanac, was despondent; they took her guitars, which were gifts from her father.

"There's two guitars that really mean a lot to me," Lamanac said. "They were my dad's, and that's irreplaceable to me. That's really the only thing I want back. I hope somebody has enough courage and respect for other people to bring the stuff back. I mean it's like the only thing he gave to me. It really means a lot to me."

Lamanac said she and Vercher's mother arrived at the house about the same time Vercher did, thinking they were there in plenty of time to help distribute the items outside that they'd intended to give to the people who showed up.

"When we got here, me and his mom jumped out of the car and said, 'This is our stuff, don't take anything,' I mean, 'If you have something, put it back,'" Lamanac said. "And this one woman actually, like, got in our faces and stuff, and started saying no, and everybody else just kind of drifted by us and didn't listen and took the stuff and left."

The mom, Pam Hobbs, bought the house 20 years ago when Michael was a toddler and she was pregnant with her daughter, Anna. In the past few years Hobbs and the rest of the family have struggled to keep up with the mortgage. She's been out of work and looking for work, and they fell behind in the mortgage. And the bank foreclosed.

They're moving into the basement of her mother's home nearby, temporarily.

Wednesday morning, when the family gathered back at their house to help with the giveaway, "the front door was wide open and people were coming in and out with our things," Hobbs said. "It was mayhem."

They immediately called 911, while telling people to get out of the house and stop taking belongings from inside the house.

"And a lady had her truck loaded with my grandma's sewing machine," Hobbs said. "And she wouldn't give it to me. So I had to call police and they got my grandma's sewing machine back."

That was one of the few items the family recovered, but the crowd had moved through the house quickly and most were gone quickly.

Here is the online ad that the family placed Tuesday night:

"Fairly large, free yard sale. Moving and we want everything to go for free. So come over and take whatever you want and how much you want. Here are a couple of items that will be there: Couch, chairs, lots of household and kitchen items, appliances, a wardrobe, desk, recliner, movies, lots of books, lamps, women's and teens' clothing, etc. And also a box of free food with lots of cans. Please take only if you need it. We're starting at 10 a.m., October 24th, and we'll finish when everything's gone."

Vercher said he now understands why people misunderstood the family's ad to mean that they were giving away everything, inside and outside the house, because of the way they worded it.

"Never thought in a million years that they would come and take all of our stuff in the house," he said, emphasizing that he had planned to arrive from work before anyone else showed up. "They probably thought that they were allowed to come , and they saw other people coming in and out, and they thought it was OK."

On Thursday the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office released the incident report that was written by the deputy who responded to the 911 call.

The deputy wrote of arriving to find two women outside the house arguing over Hobbs' sewing machine. One of them had already taken it from inside the house and had loaded it into the back of a pickup truck, and they were arguing over which one saw it first. Neither one intended to return it to Hobbs; the deputy changed the women's minds.

"I went and spoke with and they said they loaded up the free stuff they wanted... went on to say there were a whole bunch of people inside the house, outside the house, in the driveway, all of them loading up what they thought to be 'free' stuff. I asked how she heard of this free stuff give away. She said it was posted in Craigslist. And the ad in Craigslist said everything must go. I told her Ms. Hobbs wanted her sewing machine back, and she said that was fine. I helped unload the sewing machine from the truck and placed it near the curb."

The deputy then spoke with Vercher, Hobbs' son.

"He seemed upset and said no one was supposed to go inside the house and take items. I sympathized with him how I understood that, but explained to him that when placing an ad in Craigslist for 'free' stuff to be given away, someone should at least be at the residence when the people start showing up. I explained to him that there were several cars coming and going from this address when I arrived, and who knows how many came and went before I got there. I told him if he needed us for anything else, to call us back. He said he understood, then went down the street a little ways to retrieve the sewing machine from the curb. I then departed the scene, going back in-service."

A spokesman with the Sheriff's Office said Thursday that detectives are seeking the public's help to develop information about the property taken from inside the home and the people who first broke into the home.

"It's just a nightmare," Vercher said Wednesday night said, shaking his head, after taking an inventory of all that was missing from inside the house.

They have no insurance on the contents of the house.

Vercher insisted the family was speaking publicly about all of this with a single purpose in mind -- to appeal to those who were inside the house to return only the sentimental family keepsakes; the rest they're welcome to keep.

"Lived in this house for 20 years, my whole life," he said. "It's our family home. We have to get out because of the foreclosure. We don't have much and now we have even less. You'd like to think there's good people. I mean, I hope they would have a good enough heart to bring our stuff back. We don't hold any grudges against them, we just want our stuff back. I mean, some of that stuff is irreplaceable."

No questions asked, he said.

Vercher is also looking at online ads to see if anyone is now trying to sell their keepsakes.

"We're not asking for handouts," he and the others said repeatedly, "just for what means so much to us to be returned to us."

Lesson learned, they said.

Thursday, 11Alive's Help Desk responded to an outpouring of community concern for the family as a result of their self-inflicted craigslist nightmare, and arranged for Costco at Towne Center and Cumberland to offer the family a $400 gift card to replace clothing and other essential items, and for Shepherd Center in Atlanta to give them three guitars.

A grateful Pam Hobbs said the biggest lesson the family is taking away from all this is that "there are really more good people in this world than there are people that are not nice."

Vercher said that anyone who would like to contact the family about their keepsakes can email him at mr.mykul@gmail.com.

Bill Maher used his final New Rule of the night to warn voters unhappy with President Obama of the political and social consequences of the other guy winning. Maher argued that Mitt Romney winning the presidency would not just be a victory for him, but for every Republican extremist Romney has ever supported in his recent political career. Maher said Romney "may seem like a nice fella," but he's "a compulsive liar whose whole life is secret" and would bring too much unwanted baggage into a relationship with America.

Maher used the sexual analogy to say that when you do it ("it" meaning "voting") with Romney, you're also doing it with "every right wing nut he's pandered to. Maher said that anyone who votes for Romney is supporting all of the crazies in the GOP, even the ones who believe in the end of days.

He implored voters to think about the lack of any serious social controversies from the Obama White House. Compared to George W. Bush and Terri Schiavo, Maher argued that under Obama, the nation never turned into a "Jesus-freak episode of House." And as for the global warming issue, the Obama administration actually takes the science seriously, Maher said, as opposed to the last administration, which maintained "heat melting ice was just a theory."

Maher also warned about the "fresh can of nuts" in Congress with wildly anti-scientific beliefs that would have more free reign under a Republican administration. Maher said that a Republican in the White House would mean the return of "Bible-thumping bullshit" in government.

CNN October 9, 2012

Survey: One in five Americans has no religion

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) - The fastest growing "religious" group in America is made up of people with no religion at all, according to a Pew survey showing that one in five Americans is not affiliated with any religion.

The number of these Americans has grown by 25% just in the past five years, according to a survey released Thursday by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

The survey found that the ranks of the unaffiliated are growing even faster among younger Americans.

Thirty-three million Americans now have no religious affiliation, with 13 million in that group identifying as either atheist or agnostic, according to the new survey.

Pew found that those who are religiously unaffiliated are strikingly less religious than the public at large. They attend church infrequently, if at all, are largely not seeking out religion and say that the lack of it in their lives is of little importance.

And yet Pew found that 68% of the religiously unaffiliated say they believe in God, while 37% describe themselves as "spiritual" but not "religious." One in five said that they even pray every day.

John Green, a senior research adviser at Pew, breaks the religiously unaffiliated into three groups. First, he says, are those who were raised totally outside organized religion.

Second are groups of people who were unhappy with their religions and left.

The third group, Green says, comprises Americans who were never really engaged with religion in the first place, even though they were raised in religious households.

"In the past, we would describe those people as nominally affiliated. They might say, 'I am Catholic; I am a Baptist,' but they never went" to services, Green says of this last group. "Now, they feel a lot more comfortable just saying, 'You know, I am really nothing.' "

According to the poll, 88% of religiously unaffiliated people are not looking for religion.

"There is much less of a stigma attached" to not being religious, Green said. "Part of what is fueling this growth is that a lot of people who were never very religious now feel comfortable saying that they don't have an affiliation."

Demographically, the growth among the religiously unaffiliated has been most notable among people who are 18 to 29 years old.

According to the poll, 34% of "younger millennials" - those born between 1990 and 1994 - are religiously unaffiliated. Among "older millennials," born between 1981 and 1989, 30% are religiously unaffiliated: 4 percentage points higher than in 2007.

Poll respondents 18-29 were also more likely to identify as atheist or agnostic. Nearly 42% religious unaffiliated people from that age group identified as atheist or agnostic, a number far greater than the number who identified as Christian (18%) of Catholic (18%).

Green says that these numbers are "part of a broader change in American society."

"The unaffiliated have become a more distinct group," he said.

Pew's numbers were met with elation among atheist and secular leaders. Jesse Galef, communications director for the Secular Student Alliance, said that the growth of the unaffiliated should translate into greater political representation for secular interests.

"We would love to see the political leaders lead on this issue, but we are perfectly content with them following these demographic trends, following the voters," Galef said.

"As more of the voters are unaffiliated and identifying as atheist and agnostics, I think the politicians will follow that for votes.

"We won't be dismissed or ignored anymore," Galef said.

The Pew survey suggested that the Democratic Party would do well to recognize the growth of the unaffiliated, since 63% of them identify with or lean toward that political group. Only 26% of the unaffiliated do the same with the Republican Party.

"In the near future, if not this year, the unaffiliated voters will be as important as the traditionally religious are to the Republican Party collation," Green predicted.

Green points to the 2008 exit polls as evidence for that prediction. That year, Republican presidential nominee John McCain beat President Barack Obama by 47 points among white evangelical voters, while Obama had a 52-point margin of victory over McCain among the religiously unaffiliated.

According to exit polls, the proportion of religiously unaffiliated Americans who supported the Democratic presidential candidate grew 14 points from 2000 to 2008.

In announcing the survey's findings at the Religion Newswriters Association conference in Bethesda, Maryland, Green said the growing political power of the unaffiliated within the Democratic Party could become similar to the power the Religious Right acquired in the GOP in the 1980s.

"Given the growing numbers of the unaffiliated, there is the potential that that could be harnessed," he said.
