Timaru, a town in New Zealand has a new superhero and he isn't more powerful than a locomotive or able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

In fact, he is nothing like the fictional characters in comic books.
Meet Scooterman (aka John Watson), rocking, rolling, and transforming
in a phone booth near you.

Scooterman, 66, can be found in cyberspace spreading his message of positivity and doing good deeds for others.

And the concept is his from go to whoa. Nothing is a hassle as he
seeks to clean the streets of broken glass or take the neighbours a roll
of toilet paper.

Even a damaged hip doesn't stop him from jumping to the assistance of others.

The legend was launched on YouTube and has grown to a series of 24 episodes.

Scooterman says his mission is to bring a smile to people's faces,
although he still finds time to sweep the streets and carry out other
superhero chores.

His scooter is equipped with two digital cameras, MP3 player, mobile phone, broom, towel and spare underpants.

"I've had lots of flat tyres; I'm sweeping up glass all the time so I also carry a pump."

He plays down any super powers and offers a message of hope, with self effacing humour.

"I'm an idiot; I like to have a bit of empathy with people, it's just nice if you can make someone's life a bit easier.

"If they can have a giggle, then a smile, then it makes a difference."

He reiterates there are no stuntmen or special effects involved in his work.

"I'll tell you, it's not easy being a superhero."

Scooterman can be found on http://www.youtube/user/scootermantimaru and Facebook Scooterman Timaru .

Heroic group effort to save boy from drowningBeachgoers and police link hands to save a boy swept out to sea.

Desperate beachgoers formed a human chain to battle ''treacherous and dumping'' waves and save a boy from drowning.

Twelve-year-old Joshua McQuoid was caught by a wave and swept out
while playing with a friend at the beach on Napier's Marine Pde at
4.55pm yesterday.

A German tourist went to the boy's aid but was unable to keep a hold
of him, a police spokesman said. The conditions were described as
''treacherous with dumping waves and an extremely strong undertow''.

A police officer then swam to the boy but was unable to hold him due
to the heavy surf. He was joined by a few members of the public who
tried to help.A second officer entered the water and reached the boy, at
times losing hold of him as the boy went underwater. He was under for
''considerable periods of up to 20 seconds at a time and fading fast'',
police said.

About 12 members of the public and four police officers then
desperately grabbed hold of each other to form a human chain, managing
to pull the boy to shore. Initially he was ''unresponsive, physically
spent, and could not move unaided''.

He was moved up on to the beach where members of the public gave him first aid.

Joshua's father, Shane, said the family was grateful to the members of the public and the police who helped in the rescue.

''I just wish I could thank each and every one. Without them basically my son wouldn't be here.''

Joshua was at the beach with Hikiroa Ratapu and another friend when
the wave knocked them both down, Mr McQuoid said.''I think they had
their feet in the water and from what Josh said he turned around to
speak to his mate when the wave hit.

''It knocked them down, and his mate and another girl managed to haul themselves out of the water but got swept in.''
Mr McQuoid said Hikiroa was his ''little hero''.

''He realised he couldn't go into the water so he just turned around
and started yelling out to people. He was our little hero. That's when
they started running to help.''

Joshua tried to swim to shore but kept getting dragged out and
quickly tired while trying to stay afloat as waves broke over him, Mr
McQuoid said. ''His exact words were he felt like he was in a washing
machine.''

Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson said the actions of the police officers were ''admirable''.

''The first two officers who braved the conditions, they are
extremely admirable and displayed a lot of bravery getting into the
surf.

''If they had not done what they had done I'm positive the boy may not still be with us.''

He said the stretch of coastline was ''notorious'', and was
characterised by a ''pretty steep drop off, thumping waves and really
strong undertow''.

The two police officers, who became exhausted by the surf, were also helped to shore.

Mr McQuoid said it showed how dangerous the beach was. ''I had
talked to him about that beach before and what it can be like with big
waves.''

The boy was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital by ambulance and later discharged.

The family visited the police afterward where they saw video from a witness.

''The waves were just huge and the force of . It smashed down and dragged back,'' Mr McQuoid said.

Mr Stevenson said he was proud of the heroism displayed by both the
first two officers plus the members of the public who helped.

Shark shot at by cops after killing a man at a New Zealand beach.

A witness has described a police officer firing multiple shots at a
shark which attacked and killed a person at Auckland's Muriwai Beach
today.

Since 1837, 14 people in New Zealand have been killed by sharks, today being the 14th death.

Fisherman Pio Mosie told Stuff that he saw a man swimming nearby.

"All of a sudden... we saw the shark fin and next minute, boom, attack him then blood every where on the water," he said.

He called 111 while his mate ran to get help.

"He was still alive, he put his, head up, we called him to swim over the rock to where we were.

"He raised his hand up, and then while he was rising his hand up we saw another attack pull him in the water.

"He came back up, his head was on the water... then we notice he was already dead."

He heard the police then fire shots from the police helicopter and a few shots from the life guard boat.

"I don't know if they got the shark, killed the shark or not."

Emergency staff confirmed the person's body had been pulled from the
water following the early afternoon attack. The shark had been killed
but was still floating in the water.

Wellington student, Stef McCallum, 18, said they were first aware
something was wrong when a man ran across to the surf club to get help.

A woman told us a man had just been killed by a shark, she said.

"She said there was a big pool of blood in the water."

McCallum said they saw a police officer go out in a surf boat and shoot the shark.

    "He fired about 20 shots."

Around 200 people were on the beach and people quickly ran.

"Everybody was evacuated from the water. Word of mouth, 'shark', and everybody left the water."

TV3 reported from the beach that as many as three sharks may have been involved.

A witness told them he spotted the lone swimmer while he was out fishing at the beach, shortly before 2pm.

The distressed man signalled for help when he was attacked by a shark, before he was pulled underwater.

At this point, the witness said three or four other sharks appeared in the area.

Other surfers reported a large shark in the water at the rivermouth at north Piha today.

"We thought it was pretty cheeky because it was right in the surf line, heading north," one said.

A staff member at Sand Dunz dairy said people were coming into the dairy "speechless".

"I'm shaking, I don't really want to talk about it," the shop
assistant, who didn't want to be named, said. "Everyone's speechless."

Earlier this week surfer Bourne Nobel Buiski posted on Facebook that
there had been a "massive" shark spotted near surfers on Monday at
Piha, 14 kilometres south of Muriwai.

He said that a local man ran out of the water "white faced and terrified".

"He was saying that a great white, a massive great white had just swum right beside him," Buiski said.

No one believed him, he said.

"As they are so rare here. There were about 60 people there, and no one came in."

A local resident, who did not want to be named, said Muriwai had always had sharks.

''Out the back of Oaia Island is a huge crater on the ocean floor
and fishermen say they have seen huge sharks in the area and will not go
diving there.''

The beach was crowded with children from Glen Eden Intermediate and Avondale College, a Fairfax reporter on the scene said.

Auckland City Council said the beach had been closed for the day.

Piha Beach, south of Muriwai, had also been closed, lifeguards said.

A Surf Life Saving spokeswoman said lifeguards had not spotted sharks at Piha in the past week.

She referred all questions relating to the shark attack to police.

     NZ SHARK ATTACKS

There have been 14 known fatal shark attacks in NZ, since records
began around 1837, according to Department of Conservation shark expert,
Clinton Duffy.

"In the last 20 years we have been averaging two shark incidents, where the shark actually bites someone, a year."

"Those are generally on swimmers and generally result in fairly superficial flesh wounds," Duffy said.

The last death was in 2009, when a kayaker was mauled by a great
white in the Coromandel - whether he drowned before the shark found him
is still disputed. Before that the last death was in 1976.

Global shark attacks have increased every decade since 1900. Last
year's 12 fatalities, three in Australia, was almost three times the
average of 4.3 from 2001 to 2010, according to the International Shark
Attack File.

There are more than 60 shark species that come to New Zealand
waters. The majority are little-known species that live deep below the
ocean surface.

15m sperm whale dead on beach in New Zealand

A 15-metre sperm whale has washed up on Paraparaumu Beach north of Wellington overnight in New Zealand.

Crowds of people flocked to the beach early this morning to touch
and have photographs taken with the giant, which beached in the sand in
front of the Kapiti Boating Club.

Local kaumatua performed a karakia on the beach and tangata whenua
and the Department of Conservation were working out where to take it
today. Local iwi often removed the jaw before it was buried.

A DOC spokesman said they were hoping to move the whale today, as
the tide washing in would start to bury it in the beach. The carcass had
been cordoned off by Kapiti Coast District Council.

Te Papa Museum marine mammal collection manager Anton van Helden
said the "old" adult male sperm whale was freshly dead and had possibly
died on the beach or very close to shore.

"There is considerable wear on the teeth and a lot of white scarring on the skin," van Helden said.

"It probably died of suffocation due to being stranded but what caused it to come in is another equation.

"They may suffer the same old age conditions as we do such as heart
disease and arthritis, which could contribute to the cause of death."

A local fisherman said he had seen a whale thrashing around between the shore and Kapiti Island over the past few days.

Kapiti Marine Charters' Ross Leger came across the whale just after
6am when he was checking on weather for the day's sailing across to
Kapiti Island.

"By the look of it and position on the beach, I would think it was around about last night on the high tide."

He recalled a stranding at Paekakariki about 10 years ago and said there was a major stranding of about 18 orca in 1952.

Waikanae's Damian Parata, of Whakarongotai marae, said a dead sperm
whale washed up on Peka Peka Beach eight years ago after a stormy night.
He said that whale was about 17 years old.

John Bole, of Paraparaumu Beach, brought his children to have a look
at the whale this morning, after seeing it out the window when he rose.
He said it was not there at 9pm last night.

Tessa Mackay, 9, managed to touch the whale before DOC cordoned the body off.

"It is pretty warm. It is sad for such a huge animal," she said.

Her father, Iain Mackay said it was quite exciting as well as sad.

"I have never been this close to a whale before," he said.

Adult male sperm whales weigh up to 57 tonnes, can be up to 20
metres long and live for 65 years. They are found in all oceans and are
classified as vulnerable.

Three sperm whales were stranded on Paekakariki Beach in 1963".

YOUR SAY just showing some Kiwi :o)

This is a bit shakey as my son was filming whilst we drove on the motorway through Auckland City, New Zealand... destination airport as he was flying out to Australia for a month with family... a quick skim around the airport at the end too :o) Sky Tower in central was hidden by fog, which was rather unusual for this time of year here...
