Man Fined $1,000 for saving Boy's Life with Unregistered Handgun

Authorities last week made an agreement not to prosecute a Northwest D.C. man who used his unregistered handgun to kill a pit bull in order to stop it from mauling a child in his neighborhood to death.

As part of the agreement, Benjamin Srigley , 39, was required to pay a $1,000 fine but will not have criminal charges filed against him for the three unregistered firearms and the ammunition that investigators found in his possession, said Ted Gest , a spokesman for the office of the attorney general.

"We took it into account that he saved this boy's life," Mr. Gest said.

Possession of an unregistered firearm or ammunition in the District is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine, and prosecutors said Mr. Srigley could have faced up to seven criminal charges in the case.

"In our recent memory this is a unique charge because of the unusual circumstances of this case," said Mr. Gest , whose office generally prosecutes low-level crime in the District.

The horrific incident that spawned the investigation occurred on a Sunday afternoon in late January as 11-year-old Jayeon Simon and his friend rode bicycles near Eighth and Sheridan streets Northwest in the Brightwood neighborhood. According to court records filed in D.C. Superior Court, three unleashed pit bulls pounced on Jayeon and attacked him.

Seeing the attack, Mr. Srigley went inside his home to get his Ruger 9mm pistol while several other men hopped over fences to get away from the dogs, court records state.

From behind the wooden fence of his front lawn, Mr. Srigley began firing at the dogs. His shots attracted the attention of a Metropolitan Police Department officer on bicycle patrol nearby, and he also opened fire on the dogs, killing the other two.

The boy survived the attack but now bears scars on his elbow, torso and leg as a reminder.

Jayeon 's family is thankful for Mr. Srigley , crediting him for saving the boy's life.

"I don't think he should be charged at all because it's an act of heroism," said Chris Speight , 45, a cousin who helps care for Jayeon .

In addition to deciding how to handle Mr. Srigley 's case last week, authorities also made the decision to press charges against the dogs' owner, Alan Paige .

Mr. Paige , who lives a block north of the corner where the attack occurred, will face nine criminal charges - including three counts of possession of a dangerous dog, three counts of having an unleashed dog, and three counts of allowing a dog to go without a collar. The charges account for each of the three dogs, Mr. Gest said.

Mr. Paige could not be reached at his home Friday for comment. A hearing is scheduled in June for his case.

Answering the door at his home, a duplex with a stone facade and well-manicured yard, Mr. Srigley held his own dog back from his front door and declined Friday to comment on the case because it is still technically pending in court. The office of the attorney general is deferring prosecution, meaning it will remain active while Mr. Srigley meets conditions set by authorities.

In addition to paying a $1,000 fine, which was submitted in full Wednesday when the case when to court, the charges against Mr. Srigley - who police noted has no criminal record - will be dropped on condition he is not charged with any other crimes in the next two months.

While investigating the case, police seized Mr. Srigley 's pistol, which he said he purchased legally in Virginia when he lived there, and close to 100 rounds of ammunition from his home. Mr. Srigley told investigators that he owned two other guns - an antique M-1 rifle and a Mossburg 12-gauge shotgun - which were in a storage space in the District.

Police also seized those guns, but authorities have agreed they will return the firearms to Mr. Srigley when he registers them in Maryland, where he plans to soon move.

Detroit Plan for All-Black Hotel and Entertainment Complex on site of Tiger Stadium

Tiger Stadium was once the crown jewel of Detroit's major league baseball team the Detroit Tigers. Built in 1911 to accommodate 23,000 fans the stadium was expanded several times until 1937 by which it could house 52,500 fans.

The stadium was declared a State of Michigan Historic Site in 1975 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The stadium was abandoned on September 27th 1999 after a stunning last game 8-2 grand slam victory for the Detroit Tigers over the Kansas City Royals. Despite long term conservation efforts by remaining fans and historic groups the stadium was fully demolished in September 2009 with the revenue generated from the stadium's scrap metal paying the demolition bill.

Now an ambitious Detroit businessman thinks he has a bombshell idea for transforming the empty lot where Old Tiger Stadium used to be.

Francois DeMonique told WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas he wants to see the site at Michigan Avenue and Trumbull transformed into an all African American hotel and entertainment complex.

"I love this city and I believe in this city. I've put a lot of effort into it and my company, which is Urban Caf'e Corporation, we are dedicated to being a part of the new face of Detroit. This may be just the first African-American development built from the ground up," he said.

DeMonique's vision for Urban Caf'e Detroit is one where visitors can stay in a hotel, attend a live concert, have a first-class dinner and dance the night away all under one roof without having to drive to separate destinations.

"We're anticipating the Old Tiger Stadium site, but there are other options and sites that we are currently in negotiation with, private enterprises and private owners," he said.

The look of the building would be aesthetically pleasing, DeMonique said, with a streamlined, avant-garde look that will instantly raise the profile of the area in which it is built. He said the facility will influence the city's skyline and "lift the spirits of Detroit's residents and visitors."

DeMonique, who's been working on the project since 2009, said the complex would focus on "celebrating the positives of many nations around the world" from the perspectives of art, dance, music, cuisines and the other aspects. He described the venue as being "the place to be for locals and a must-see establishment for tourists."

The hotel will be the jewel of the complex, DeMonique said, featuring its own 200-seat upscale restaurant, full-service bar, candy store, exercise room, spa, hair salon anda business center. The third through seventh floors will have 20 suites per floor, each featuring a theme-specific decor designed around the unique cultures of various African countries. DeMonique said the designs and concepts will cover all 100 suites, showcasing different countries of Africa and the Caribbean.

The complex will also feature a multi-purpose theater with 1,500 seats, which can be used for conventions, weddings, concerts, graduations and proms, among other things. The venue's central restaurant will be theme-based with 500 seats. DeMonique said the food will be mostly all-American bistro with a "Rain Forest Caf'e" vibe.

DeMonique, who was born in West Africa, said he regards the venture as an effort to reach out to an entire community by sharing African-American culture, cuisines and other heritages in all their variety. Although the complex will be urban focused, DeMonique said patrons of all backgrounds will be welcomed and embraced.

Urban Caf'e Detroit is projected to draw a quarter of a million patrons annually for the first five years of operation, DeMonique said.

The project has a price tag of $75 million to $100 million.

My Visit to Centralia - An Abandoned Ghost Town

In the early 1960's Centralia was a successful coal mining town smack in the middle of Pennsylvania, USA. Although the town was making money, town officials were concerned about the cost of disposing of garbage. So they decided the best and cheapest thing to do was push the town's garbage underground into unused coal mine shafts.
Eventually there was too much garbage in the mine shafts to fit any more. According to locals the town officials ordered the garbage in the mines to be set on fire so as to make room for more garbage. The garbage was set on fire and soon the fire spread to veins of coal in the mine. Soon the natural coal was burning uncontrollably underground. Many attempts were made to extinguish the slow underground fire but it was impossible to put out. The ground got hot and smoke began to billow from the ground.
People were ordered to leave as the underground coal fire began to melt the highway leading to the town. Fearing people would return to the town the government demolished the homes and businesses of the residents. By 1990, 95% if the residents had fled and only 3 houses were left standing.
As of now there is just one house left in the town. The highway (Highway 61) leading to the town and the town itself are no longer listed on maps. The fire is still burning underground, but now very far away from the town. The government has cut the electricity, water, and gas to the last house and ordered the owners to leave.
When I visited the house in late 2012 the owners said the government knew the area was now safe to live and was just using the underground fire that started in the 1960's as an excuse to evict them. Once the last house falls, the owners claim, the Pennsylvania state government will have the ability to develop the land for their own agenda.

Is Christopher Dorner really the insane psychopath that the LAPD and the media is trying to portray him as? Maybe he is, maybe he isn't.

This compilation of facts regarding the Dorner case gives you a step by step look into everything that has happened until now starting from the very begging.

The biggest question everyone is asking now is why are the police so out to kill Dorner? Three people have already been shot at by LAPD in cases of mistaken identity, two of them hospitalized from bullet wounds. What does Dorner know that has lead the LAPD to shoot first and ask questions later?

People need the gas for their generators because their houses are still without power. 85% of gas stations are still closed.
