She and French photographer Remi Ochlik, 28, were reportedly hit by a rocket as they tried to flee. Ms Colvin was renowned for wearing a black eye patch after losing an eye in Sri Lanka in 2001 from a shrapnel wound. Only yesterday she reported for the BBC, saying: "I watched a little baby die today. Absolutely horrific. "There is just shells, rockets and tank fire pouring into civilian areas of this city and it is just unrelenting." Rupert Murdoch, owner of the Sunday Times, led the tributes to Ms Colvin. He said: "It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of Marie Colvin, one of the most outstanding foreign correspondents of her generation.
