http://www.citytv.com/toronto/citynews/news/local/article/109360--multi-vehicle-crash-north-of-barrie-claims-woman-s-life

A 22-year-old woman was killed Friday after getting out of her car to survey damage in the midst of a multi-vehicle collision north of Barrie.

Four others suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened around 11am on the southbound lanes of Highway 11 near the Oro-Medonte 8th Line and involved dozens of vehicles.

It started when a tractor-trailer lost control and jack-knifed. Not long after a second tractor-trailer was forced into a ditch, sparking a chain reaction of collisions.

OPP Const. Peter Leon explained how the fatality happened.

"She exited her vehicle and was struck by another vehicle that was also involved," said Leon.

The Barrie woman, identified as Connie Ward, was pronounced dead at the scene.

All southbound lanes of Highway 11 in the area were closed for several hours while police investigated.

There were whiteout conditions when the crash happened and police say the weather was likely the cause of the crash. At best, visibility was about 200 metres, authorities said.

One of the first officers on scene also had a close brush with serious injury.

"One of the officers from Barrie detachment who was on scene investigating the original occurrence was actually witness to the fact that the jack-knifed tractor-trailer was out of control and had to run out of the way herself so she wasn't struck," Leon added.

About three hours earlier, another crash had snarled rush-hour traffic on Highway 401 near Guelph Line in Milton.

Cars were backed up for about six kilometres in both directions after an eastbound tractor-trailer veered across two lanes of traffic, colliding with two cars and striking the centre concrete median.

The front end jumped the median and landed in the westbound lanes where three other vehicles crashed into it. The resulting debris damaged a passing tractor-trailer and caused a large leak. The trailer, carrying 30 tonnes of sand, remained stuck in the eastbound lanes.

No one was seriously hurt, including the 48-year-old Brampton man who lost control of his rig.

World Junior Hockey Championships

Buffalo New York
____________________________________________________

Hit looked clean to me

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Canadian National Junior Team will be forced to carry on without the services of power forward Zack Kassian for its next game.

Kassian, whose specialty is providing a physical element for his team, was issued a match penalty and with it, a one-game suspension, for an illegal hit in the second period of Canada's 7-2 victory against the Czech Republic in preliminary-round action at the 2011 World Junior Championship on Tuesday at HSBC Arena.

Kassian was ejected at 5:53 of the second period for an apparent illegal hit to the chin. He'll sit out Wednesday's game against Norway, per IIHF rules. Tournament disciplinarian Dan Marouelli will have 24 hours to determine whether supplementary disciplinary is warranted.

"I was backchecking hard and it happened really fast," Kassian told reporters after the game. "He seemed to dump the puck in and I was just finishing my check. Everything happened so fast. I was brought here to be physical and I wanted to stay physical and stay disciplined. I thought I'd been doing that so far ... my hands were down. I just hope he's all right; I'm hearing he's OK, so that's a good feeling. We now just have to move forward.

"It's out of my hands from here. Hopefully it's just that one game."

According to the IIHF, Marouelli reviewed Kassian's hit on video during the second intermission and said he will discuss the situation with game officials to collect more information. Marouelli said he will "most likely not need the full 24-hour time period to make a ruling."

Only Marouelli can make a final decision.

"It really doesn't matter what I think; I have no input into it," Canada coach Dave Cameron said. "Whatever protocol is in place for this will take place and whatever happens, happens."

Kassian, 19, was ejected after putting his shoulder into the chest of unsuspecting Czech forward Petr Senkerik at the Canada blue line. Senkerik remained motionless on the ice for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. Senkerik looked to be conscious as he left the ice and reportedly was reaching for his nose in the tunnel leading off the ice.

"Petr was awake, so we were happy about that," Czech Republic assistant coach Jiri Fischer said. "It was a scary moment, especially the way he left the ice. He was awake and he was communicating, so he'll get some further evaluations and we'll have an update (Wednesday). The plan would probably be to bring him to the hospital."

Fischer wouldn't assess the hit until after watching a replay.

"I haven't seen the replay and it was in a scrum," he said. "Petr passed the puck and then he certainly was hit. Where exactly the hit was, and how he landed ... I'll have to see the replay."

While playing for the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires last season, Kassian was suspended 20 games following an open-ice hit on Barrie Colts forward Matt Kennedy.

Whatever the penalty might be, Kassian feels it would be unfair to change the style of play that got him this far in his career, including his spot as the 13th pick of the 2009 Entry Draft by the Sabres.

"I can't change," he said. "That's one of the reasons I made this team -- to play physical. But it's over with now and we'll see what my penalty is."

Marcus Foligno knows others now will have to pick it up in the absence of Kassian. Foligno and Kassian had been on the same line, centered by Ryan Johansen.

"I was backchecking and saw it at the last second and it looked like a clean hit," Foligno said. "Zack came in hard. He's a big boy, so if he hits guys who are a little smaller, he's going to hurt guys."

Kassian is listed at 6-foot-3 and 214 pounds. Senkerik,19, is 6-foot and 187 pounds.

Cameron told Kassian to keep his head up when he saw him in the locker room after the game.

"I worked so hard to make the team and when you're sitting out a game it's not fun," Kassian said. "You want to be in the battle with your teammates. Nothing I can do know except move forward."

SnowStorm Strands Hundreds in SW Ontario, Canada

Canadian police and military teams were working Tuesday afternoon to rescue about 300 people stranded after what a local official termed the most brutal storm to hit the Ontario region in 25 years.
Some people had been stuck in their vehicles for more than 24 hours following blinding snow that piled up so high it made it almost impossible to open vehicle doors.
"You really felt almost despair," said Brandon Junkin, who spent nearly 24 hours stranded before being rescued Tuesday afternoon after he heard a helicopter hovering over his immobilized truck. He had run out of gas and was without anything other than a blanket to help him through the ordeal.
Ontario Provincial Police initially reported about 360 vehicles and about 300 people had been stranded near Sarnia, Ontario, on Highway 402 -- a major thoroughfare linking the U.S.-Canada border to London, Ontario.
Twin Cities record-breaking snowfall Snowfall buries parts of North Carolina Metrodome roof cave in Inside the collapsed Metrodome

Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome
Some of those people have since been rescued, but Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said it could be 24 hours before everyone is taken to safety.
The Canadian military assigned a CC-130 Hercules airplane and two CH-146 Griffons helicopters to the search and rescue effort, which also includes snowmobiles and four-wheel-drive vehicles from the provincial police.
Bradley said truckers stranded by the storm have invited some motorists to shelter with them in their rigs, and nearby residents have also opened their homes to stranded motorists.
He reiterated police warnings not to travel through the region.
"This is probably the most brutal storm we have had in 25 years," he said.
Meanwhile, wintry weather continued its assault Tuesday on the Eastern United States with another hard freeze on tap for the deep South and as much as two more feet of snow in portions of New York and Pennsylvania.
Even northwest Indiana, already buried under as much as two feet of snow and the site of numerous motorist strandings Sunday and Monday, was expected to get another taste of blinding lake effect snow on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
And temperatures will only get colder, CNN meteorologist Jennifer Delgado said.
Cold arctic air is expected to cover the eastern United States through Tuesday, according to Delgado. Florida is expected to shiver through wind chills ranging from 5 to 23 degrees.
While the bulk of the storm that blanketed much of the upper Midwest in snow over the weekend has moved on to Canada, the National Weather Service said portions of upstate New York were expected to get as much as two feet of lake effect snow through Wednesday morning. The heaviest accumulations were expected Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Lake effect snow happens when cold air passes over warmer lake waters, picking up moisture that freezes and falls as snow.
As much as 16 inches of lake effect snow is on tap for parts of northwest Pennsylvania, as well.
Northwest Indiana, where dozens of motorists were stranded Sunday and Monday after a storm that dumped more than two feet of snow in parts of LaPorte County and surrounding areas, was expected to get a few more inches of blowing, drifting lake effect snow, according to the National Weather Service.
That would continue to make travel in the region difficult.
In Florida, where much of the state was under a hard freeze watch for Tuesday night, citrus growers remained cautiously optimistic that the state's valuable citrus crop would survive yet another night of frosty cold.
Although temperatures were forecast to fall into the mid-20s in the southern part of the state and as low as the teens in inland portions of northern Florida, winds were forecast to be light -- a good sign for growers, said Andrew Meadows, a spokesman for Florida Citrus Mutual, a trade association.
"Our fingers are crossed for tonight but the good thing is there's not going to be any wind, which is prefect for irrigation," he said.
Constantly spritzing citrus trees with water can help prevent frost damage. Windy conditions make that work harder, according to the association.
The crop has so far escaped major damage, Meadows said.
By the way, in case you were thinking Wednesday might be better, probably not.
The National Weather Service says that a low pressure system will draw warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico up into Kentucky and Tennessee, introducing the threat of freezing rain that could coat roads, trees and power lines.

The Coventry Blaze forward triggered the melee during a game last Saturday. The Kelowna, B.C., native bolted from a linesman escorting him off the ice and charged at Nottingham Panthers goaltender Craig Kowalski.

That prompted players from both benches and penalty boxes to jump on the ice and join the second-period fracas, which lasted about three minutes and led to eight suspensions announced Wednesday.

Nottingham's Danny Meyers was given seven games for his actions, which included a blindside hit on Coventry netminder Brett Jaeger that revived the fighting.

Teammate Alex Penner of Simcoe, Ont., was handed a five-game ban for leaving the penalty box to join a fight and starting another altercation after things had calmed.

Both coaches were suspended for failing to control their players. Nottingham coach David Graham was given three games while Coventry counterpart Paul Thompson got two games.

Jade Galbraith of Hinton, Alta., and Marc Levers, both from Nottingham, and Aaron Nell of Coventry were each suspended one game for leaving the penalty box to join a fight.

Coventry won the game 2-1 as the teams combined for 235 penalty minutes.

On a serious note.

My city is getting hammered with some wicked weather that has dumped over a meter of snow and there's more on the way

Even though I live in Canada, I have never seen anything like this in my life.
