Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu: "All options on table and containment not an option"

Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu stated his country's right to defend itself against the possible threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. He also said the world cannot wait much longer to take action against Tehran, during his meeting in Washington with President Obama and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) on Monday.

"Israel will always reserve the right to defend itself," Netanyahu said in his uncompromising speech about the possible Iranian nuclear program, "We are determined to prevent Iran developing nuclear weapons. We leave all options on the table and containment is not an option. The Jewish state will not allow those who seek Israel's destruction the means to achieve that goal. A nuclear-armed Iran must be stopped." he also told to media.

Netanyahu's visit to Washington D.C. comes amid speculation, in the press and in public statements by Israeli officials, that Israel is planning a military strike against nuclear facilities in Iran. Netanyahu told AIPAC that he would not talk about what Israel would or would not do, but reiterated that Israel would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.

Netanyahu also said: "As prime minister of Israel, I will never let my people live in the shadow of annihilation."

The Obama administration has not said whether it would support Israeli action against Iran, and in recent weeks has said it sees no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon. James Clapper, the US director of national intelligence, testified before Congress in January that he believed Iran had not yet decided whether or not to build a bomb.

Obama said the United States "reserved all options" regarding Iran's nuclear programme, but wanted more time to pursue diplomacy.
International negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme have been stalled for more than a year, Israeli officials want Iran to completely suspend its uranium enrichment programme before the West resumes negotiations. However, the White House has apparently rejected that demand, which Iran would almost certainly refuse.

Iran continues its own course on its nuclear program and remains defiant to the
international community, even after the international condemnation which ends up
with economic sanctions.

Now Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz,
a narrow strategically important strait between the gulf of oman and the persian
gulf and major passageway for much of the world's oil supply.

Map of the strait of hormuz, between gulf of oman and persian gulf.

This step was decided by Iranian Government in retaliation for any embargo
and it also vowed taking punishment the United States and Israel, which are accused
by Iran being connected to the recent assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists.

The U.S. and Israel officials denied being involved in assassinations but both countries back up
their hard-line stance on Iran.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Saturday: "I think there is consensus
now in most of the capitals of the world that Iran should not be allowed
to turn into a military nuclear power, there is a consensus, at least in the West
and North America, that no option should be removed off the table in regard
to dealing with the threat. We feel the same."

With Irans plan to close the strait of hormuz, the discrepancies on iranian
nuclear power likely going into a new round on powerplays between Iran
and the U.S.but also Israel, especially since Teheran send two warships through
Egypt's Suez canal heading the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday, February 19, 2012.

UK nuclear sub near Falklands,Argentina making an official complaint to the UN over the Falklands dispute

Argentina's foreign minister has accused the UK of sending a nuclear-armed submarine to the
South Atlantic, after making an official complaint to the UN over the
Falklands dispute.

Hector Timerman demanded that the British confirm the location of nuclear submarines in the region.
But UK officials said the accusations of militarisation were "absurd".
UN chief Ban Ki-moon earlier called on both sides to avoid an "escalation" in tensions over the Falkland Islands.

The two countries went to war in 1982 over the British overseas territory.

Mr Timerman told a news conference at the UN in New York that
the UK was "militarising the region", repeating accusations made by
Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner earlier this week.
"Argentina has information that, within the framework of the
recent British deployment in the Falklands, they sent a nuclear
submarine with the capacity to transport nuclear weapons to the South
Atlantic," Mr Timerman said.
He did not elaborate on the information, but said the vessel was Vanguard-class, a group that carries Trident nuclear missiles.

He added that Mr Ban had agreed to talk to the British about Argentina's complaints.

The Latin America and the Caribbean region is designated a nuclear-free zone under a treaty signed in the 1960s.

In response, Britain's UN envoy Mark Lyall Grant said the
government does not comment on the "disposition of nuclear weapons,
submarines etc".
And he dismissed the accusation that the UK was militarising the situation as "manifestly absurd".

"Before 1982 there was a minimal defence presence in the Falkland Islands," he said.

"It is only because Argentina illegally invaded the Falkland
Islands in 1982 that we had to increase our defence posture. Nothing has
changed in that defence posture in recent months or recent years."
The UK had earlier said it was carrying out routine operations in the South Atlantic.

It is not clear if Argentina plans to pursue any further action at the UN beyond the current protest.

The UN General Assembly has already passed non-binding resolutions urging the two to solve the dispute through negotiations.

The UK says the islanders have the right to self-determination, and
London will enter into negotiations on the status of the Falklands only
if the islanders request it.
The status of the islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, is still a highly sensitive issue for Buenos Aires.

In recent months, the Argentine government has stepped up its
rhetoric on the issue and has sought support among its South American
neighbours.

Somalia rebel group Al-Shabaab joined al Qaeda

Somalia's Al-Shabaab rebel movement has tightened its ties to the al
Qaeda terror network, with its leader pledging loyalty to al Qaeda
leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

The Islamist militants control much of southern Somalia and have long
been affiliated with al Qaeda. But in an audio message posted on
Al-Shabaab's website Thursday, the Somali group's leader, Mukhtar Abu
al-Zubair, tells al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri that his followers
"will march with you as loyal soldiers."

Al-Zawahiri took command of al Qaeda after U.S. commandos killed the
movement's founder, Osama bin Laden, last May. Al-Zubair addresses
al-Zawahiri as "my dear commander and kind sheikh" and congratulates him
"for the defeat of the crusaders in Afghanistan and Iraq."
"On behalf of the soldiers and the commanders in al-Shabaab, we
pledge allegiance to you. So lead us to the path of jihad and martyrdom
that was drawn by our imam, the martyr Osama."
And in a video message posted on the site, al-Zawahiri hails the move
as news "that will delight the believers and annoy the crusaders.""The Arab region is slipping from America's grip," he says.

Al-Shabaab is already considered a terrorist movement by the United
States. It has been battling Somalia's U.N.-backed transitional
government and African Union peacekeepers for the past several years,
but has suffered a series of setbacks in recent months.
AU and government forces drove Al-Shabaab fighters from the center of
the Somali capital Mogadishu last year, while Kenyan troops crossed
into southern Somalia in October to hit back for a rash of kidnappings
it blamed on the group.
In November, the leaders of Kenya, Somalia and Uganda reaffirmed
their commitments to battle Al-Shabaab, and U.S. officials say the group
has recruited Somali-Americans to take up arms in their ancestral home.

Syrian opposition group reported at least 137 deaths at the hands of government forces Thursday as President Bashar al-Assad escalated a brutal assault against an opposition that wants an end to his regime.

Thursday marked the fifth consecutive day of attacks on opposition activists and civilians in the besieged city of Homs -- Syria's third-largest city -- which has become a flashpoint in the uprising.

The Local Coordination Committees, a network of opposition activists that organizes and documents protests, said that 110 of the deaths were in Homs; 10 were children.

Pentagon plans inrease of elite units as it winds down in Afghanistan

article first appeared on New York Times

Photo: U.S. Green Beret in Afghanistan, special forces might increase manpower due Pentagon plans

"Presence could last beyond 2014; far different withdrawal plan than the one for Iraq"

The Pentagon plans to wind down its combat role in Afghanistan a
year earlier than expected relies on shifting responsibility to Special
Operations forces (SOF) that hunt insurgent leaders and train local troops of ANA (Afghan National Army),
according to senior Pentagon officials and military officers. These
forces could remain in the country well after the NATO mission ends in
late 2014.

The plan, if approved by President Obama, would amount to the most
significant evolution in the military campaign since Mr. Obama sent in
32,000 more troops to wage an intensive and costly counterinsurgency
effort.
Under the emerging plan, American conventional forces, focused on
policing large parts of Afghanistan, will be the first to leave, while
thousands of American Special Operations forces remain, making up an
increasing percentage of the troops on the ground; their number may even
grow.
The evolving strategy is far different from the withdrawal plan for
Iraq, where almost all American forces, conventional or otherwise, have
left. Iraq has devolved into sectarian violence ever since the
withdrawal in December, which threatens to undo the political and
security gains there.
Pentagon officials and military planners say the new plan for
Afghanistan is not a direct response to the deteriorating conditions in
Iraq. Even so, the shift could give Mr. Obama a political shield against
attacks from his Republican rivals in the presidential race who have
already begun criticizing him for moving too swiftly to extract troops
from Afghanistan.
Unlike in Iraq, where domestic political pressure gave Prime Minister
Nuri Kamal al-Maliki reason to resist a continued American military
presence into 2012, in Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai and his
senior aides have expressed an initial willingness to continue a
partnership with the United States that includes counter terrorism
missions and training.
Senior American officials have also expressed a desire to keep some
training and counterterrorism troops in Afghanistan past 2014. The
transition plan for the next three years in Afghanistan could be a model
for such a continued military relationship.

The new focus builds on a desire to use the nation's most elite
troops to counter any residual terrorist threat over the coming months
as well as to devote the military's best trainers to the difficult task
of preparing Afghan security forces to take over responsibilities in
their country.
The plan would put a particularly heavy focus on Army Special Forces,
also known as the Green Berets. They would be in charge of training a
variety of Afghan security forces. At the same time, the elite commando
teams within Special Operations forces would continue their raids to
hunt down, capture or kill insurgent commanders and terrorist leaders
and keep pressure on cells of fighters to prevent them from mounting
attacks.
Created by President John F. Kennedy in the 1960s, the Green Berets
have as one of their core missions what is called "foreign internal
defense" - using combat, mentoring, language and cross-cultural skills
to train local forces in rugged environments, as they are today in
missions conducted quietly in dozens of nations around the world.
Just as significant would be what the American military's conventional forces stop doing.

Americans would no longer be carrying out large numbers of patrols to
clear vast areas of Afghanistan of insurgents, or holding villages and
towns vulnerable to militant attacks while local forces and government
agencies rebuilt the local economy and empowered local governments.
Those tasks would fall to Afghan forces, with Special Forces soldiers
remaining in the field to guide them. This shift has already begun to
take place.
The defense secretary, Leon E. Panetta, surprised NATO allies last
week when he announced that American forces would step back from a
leading role in combat missions by mid-2013, turning over security
responsibilities to Afghan forces a year earlier than expected. The
description of the shift to a Special Operations mission in Afghanistan
by senior officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the
final plans have not been approved, go a long way toward explaining
what Mr. Panetta sketched out for the allies.
"The president said in June that when the drawdown of surge forces is
complete in September, U.S. troops will continue coming home at a
steady pace and our mission will shift from combat to support as the
Afghans take the lead," said Tommy Vietor, the National Security Council
spokesman.
The United States has about 90,000 troops in Afghanistan, with 22,000
of them expected to leave by this fall. No schedule has been set for
the pace of withdrawal for the 68,000 American troops who will remain,
although some administration officials are advocating for Mr. Obama to
order another reduction by the summer of 2013.
The planning for a transition of the Afghanistan mission is a central
effort among the Pentagon's civilian planners and the military's Joint
Staff, as well as among officers at the United States Central and
Special Operations Commands.
Senior Pentagon officials involved in the planning acknowledge that a
military effort with a smaller force and a more focused mission could
be easier to explain to Americans who have tired of the large
counterinsurgency campaigns of Iraq and, previously, Afghanistan.

To be sure, some American conventional units would be called on to
handle logistics and other support services - transportation, medical
care, security - to enable the Special Operations missions to continue.
But that would require a far smaller American presence to help the
Afghans protect recent security gains while minimizing American expenses
and casualties.
The plan first calls for creating a two-star command position
overseeing the entire Special Operations effort in Afghanistan. Next,
the three-star corps headquarters that currently commands the day-to-day
operations of the war - and is held by an Army officer from the
conventional force - would be handed over to a Special Operations
officer.
Officials said that no final decisions had been made on the timing of
the transition, although it is likely to begin late this year as the
rest of the surge forces are withdrawn. There has also been no decision
on the number of troops to be committed to the mission as it evolves in
2013 and into 2014, officials said.
Officials noted the progress in creating new "Afghan Strike Force"
units to carry out commando-type raids, and they said that the effort to
create an Afghan National Army - which had been focused on building as
large a force as possible - would shift to emphasize quality and
capability.
Officials conceded that the Afghan National Police program remained a
huge disappointment, but said that a great value in American investment
had been organizing local Afghan police units, drawn from the villages
they are assigned to protect.
