A sea turtle found a waterproof camera in the Caribbean, somehow activated the device, filmed itself and is now a You Tube sensation. Back in May US Coast Guard agent Paul Schultz found a digital camera in a waterproof case on a beach in Key West, Florida, and posted images he found on its memory chip on the Internet in an attempt to find its owner. In a video clip dated January 2010 "a turtle came across the camera, and it's really hard to tell how, but it turns the camera on and recorded itself swimming with the camera," Schultz told AFP. "When I saw the video, I thought first that someone was getting attacked by a sea creature," Schultz said. "I thought that a diver was getting attacked," he said. However, he later realized that the camera was just hitching a ride with a sea turtle. "The last thing the camera owner did was shoot a video underwater, and then it goes right into the next video with the camera turning around in the water," Schultz said. Schultz eventually found the owner, a Dutch navy sailor who lost the camera when he was diving off the island of Aruba in November. The image submitted to CEUFO is said to have been taken in midday with a Minolta digital camera. Using a lens of 135 mm and a manual speed of 1/1000. The CEUFO analyzed the image and declared it to be that of a flying "entity". They also said that the image was of a "high strangeness". The CEUFO came to this conclusion after submitting the photograph to rigorous testing. CEUFO also submitted the image to various centers around the globe for further examination. The curator for the Provincial Museum (Gustavo Siegentale) said that the image was "very strange" indeed. Gustavo Siegentale went on to even claim that this could be a "mammal, carnivore and with wings" obviously "an unknown species". According to The CEUFO, the image was then submitted to the Special Criminal Division (police) of La Pampa. The division, using hi-tech equipment that is usually used for criminal cases, said that the in the photograph, one can see eye sockets, a beak and the object could be 80 cm tall. The image, which is being circulated via email worldwide, is real, according to wildlife experts. The photo, believed to have been taken earlier this week, shows the spider clenching its legs around a lifeless bird trapped in a web at a property near Atherton, west of Cairns. Joel Shakespeare, the head spider keeper at NSW's Australian Reptile Park, has told ninemsn the spider was a golden orb weaver. "Normally they prey on large insects, it's unusual to see one eating a bird," he said. Mr Shakepeare said he had seen Golden Orb Weaver spiders as big as a human hand but the northern species in tropical areas were known to grow larger. Mr Shakespeare told ninemsn the bird, a chestnut-breasted mannikin which appears frozen in an angel-like pose in the pictures, is likely to have flown into the web and got caught. Documenting the telltale's movement helps mission scientists and engineers determine what the wind is like on Mars. On the day these images were taken, one of the images seemed to be "out-of-phase" with other images, possibly indicating a dust devil occurrence. Preliminary analysis of the images taken right before and after the passing of this possible dust devil indicates winds from the west at 7 meters per second. The image taken during the possible dust devil shows 11 meters per second wind from the south. These images were taken by the lander's Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) on the 136th Martian day, or sol, of the mission (Oct. 12, 2008). Phoenix's telltale is part of the Canadian Space Agency's meteorological package on the lander. The telltale was built by the University of Aarhus, Denmark. The Phoenix Mission is led by the University of Arizona, Tucson, on behalf of NASA. Project management of the mission is by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Tom and Kerry Watts' mammoth burger was nearly half a metre wide and weighed the equivalent of about 100 quarter pounders. It was the highlight of the couple's wedding reception which was held at Zak's American diner in Norwich. Firefighter Tom, 36, said: "Not only did I get to marry the woman of my dreams but I also got to have the burger of my dreams in the same day. "I could not believe the size of the burger. It was just incredible. Everything has just been amazing. It was the best day ever." Kerry, also 36, added: "We love burgers and thought it would be a bit of fun. It made the day even more special. We love chocolate too so we also had a chocolate cake." It took butcher John Baxter a whole day to create and shape the giant burger which weighed 400oz when uncooked. It had to be cooked for three hours and required three chefs to lift it out of the oven before it could be put into the specially made sesame seeded bun. Now 80 years later industry experts are hailing Image Metrics for making the most realistic computer generated character so far. 'Emily' is an extraordinary animated woman created using a ground-breaking modeling technique that captures minute facial movements. Her real life counterpart is American actress Emily O'Brien, star of American soap opera The Young and the Restless. To create the footage the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies made a a computer generated replica of Emily. The actress sat inside a sphere of LED lights while she was photographed making 35 different poses. The light patterns allowed the shine of her skin to be captured independently from her main skin tone, with hundreds of measurements taken for each millimeter. 'The CG models provide unprecedented detail of natural facial expressions - down to skin pores and fine wrinkles,' a spokesman said. This technique has managed to avoid 'uncanny valley' - in which an animation looks less realistic as it approaches human likeness. The 3D model of Emily was then animated by Image Metrics, a company that makes computer-generated imagery for Hollywood films and computer games. They filmed Ms O'Brien giving a 90-second performance using computer vision technology, which captured the footage pixel by pixel. The team then applied this to the computer-generated character - a process that only took one week. Matthew Whitton, a police officer, and Rick Dyer, a former corrections officer, along with veteran Bigfoot tracker Tom Biscardi of Searching for Bigfoot, Inc., said they came across the seven-foot, seven-inch (2.3-meter), 500-pound (227-kilogram) body of a simianlike creature in the woods. The group also said DNA tests are being carried out and that a team of undisclosed scientists will examine the corpse. ScientificAmerican.com contacted Jeffrey Meldrum, a prominent researcher on Sasquatch and professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University in Pocatello, who has studied Bigfoot prints and other clues like hair samples. Meldrum has written a book on the subject of whether or not the mystery beast is real, and has previously said that "the evidence that exists fully justifies the investigation and the pursuit of this question." Cryptids, or bizarre, undocumented animals like the "Montauk monster" and the chupacabra, have been making the news rounds lately. Will this latest claim wither under scrutiny, or have these amateur Bigfoot hunters in fact really found something? An edited transcript of what Meldrum had to say about this week's supposed discovery follows. What do you think of this announcement of a Bigfoot body being found in Georgia? I'm extremely skeptical about this Bigfoot claim. I haven't been contacted by any of the principal involved in this. I've had interactions with Tom Biscardi in the past, and based on that history, I would say that anything he is involved in is suspect. The fact that the two Georgian men turned to him and not anyone with scientific credentials is very questionable. What about the pictures? So a picture is worth a 1,000 words. What I've seen so far is not compelling in the least, and I think the pictures cast grave doubts on their claim. It just looks like a costume with some fake guts thrown on top for effect. Even if had have been eviscerated by a predator or a scavenger, wouldn't just be sitting up on top like that. Someone says that they've found an off-the-shelf costume that looks a lot like the figure in these pictures. So apparently stuffed the body into a freezer. You look at it and there doesn't seem to be any mass there, of muscles and bones and so forth. Also, they tried freezing the corpse in a block of ice-you wouldn't do that if you were trying to preserve a specimen, unless you're trying to hide the details. So what is the story with the Sasquatch DNA evidence? All the rumors about the Bigfoot DNA results are just that: rumors. I spoke to Curtis Nelson (a biologist from the University of Minnesota) who is doing the DNA tests, and he all he could say is that there are no results yet-he can't say anything more due to a nondisclosure agreement. Apparently Curt just received a vial of tissue in the mail, and there's no chain of custody, no validation that this tissue came from the corpse in question. Since there is no known Sasquatch genetic material to compare it to, he may just end up with a gene sequence that doesn't match any other primates, at best. Why would anyone stake such an outrageous claim without proof? I don't know what their motivation would be. I don't see how they think they can perpetuate such a in this day and age. You hold out hope that Bigfoot will be found one day, and to some extent this is probably what that event would be like. But assuming that this kind of scenario transpires at some point, hopefully it wouldn't unfold in such a carnival atmosphere and the proper authorities and scientists would be involved.
