Israel Police's Internal Affairs Division began undercover
investigation following claims that 3 border policemen systematically
attacked, robbed Palestinian laborers.By

				     			 May.31, 2012
7:33 PM

7	Three Israeli border policemen were arrested on Wednesday
over suspicions that they had systematically accosted Palestinian
workers in Jerusalem and stole their money.

In a court hearing discussing their remand on Thursday, representative
of Israel Police's Internal Affairs Division Shalom Amar, said that the
three suspects, Uziel Hanun, Osama al-Sahly, Reuven Dhokerker, were in
the habit of "targeting working-class people, workers suspected of
illegally entering Israel."

The policemen, after leaving their bases without permission, allegedly,
"using threats, escorted the into alleys near Damascus
Gate in the Old City."

"Those who didn't have money were beaten and sent home, those who did were also beaten, and their money stolen," Amar added.

In one case, according to police representatives, a resident of the
Palestinian city of Ramallah drove to Jerusalem and from there to
Ashdod, where he earned NIS 400 in an odd job.

When he returned to Jerusalem, the suspects forced him into an alley
and took his money. After hitting him, the Border Police officers
allegedly told him: "Turn around, get out of here and don't look back."

According to Amar, the man had then to ask for money in order to return to his home in Ramallah.

Israel Police's Internal Affairs Division launched an undercover
investigation of the reported robberies following information received
by the department, managing to reach two victims and with knowledge of
four cases.

However, police officials believe the robberies were systematic, and represented a "severe affair."

All three suspects were arrested Wednesday night by the Internal Affairs Division after being caught "in the act."

The court remanded the three by four days on Thursday. In his ruling,
judge Dov Pollock said that he was conceived there was "reasonable
suspicions regarding theft, but at this point I'm not sure that in all
cases armed robbery took place.

The suspects' attorneys said that the cases in question, at most,
involved theft and not armed robbery, claiming that some of the alleged
victims said they hadn't noticed any money was missing until they were
later searched by police.

An attorney representing one of the suspects said the court "determined
that at least in one case it was not armed robbery. Any claim that
links them with armed robbery is not a result of the body of evidence."

                Jewish
NGO calls on Gauck to "clarify his stance on Israel" after he
apparently undercut Merkel's pledge to the Jewish state regarding its
security concerns.
BERLIN - German President Joachim Gauck sparked controversy on Tuesday during
his visit to Israel because he apparently undercut Chancellor Angela Merkel's
pledge to the Jewish state regarding its security concerns. When asked
whether Israel's security relates to national security interests of the Federal
Republic, Gauck answered that this policy position could create "enormous
difficulties" for a crisis situation in Germany.
Related: A new dilemma in hosting a German president In a statement on
Wednesday, the Berlin-based office of the American Jewish Committee called on
Gauck to "clarify his stance on Israel."The NGO wrote, "Gauck declined
to express support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel's position that the
defense of Israel is a for Germany.""Recent polls show
an increasingly negative climate toward Israel in Germany," said Deidre Berger,
the director of AJC Berlin. She added that "the timing of President
Gauck's visit is of particular importance, given the threat to Israel of Iran's
secret nuclear program. We urge President Gauck to clarify that his statements
do not indicate a shift by the German government in its position on Israel. We
are concerned the comments, without reaffirming the position of the German
chancellor, will have a further negative impact in Germany on support for
Israel."Leading German commentators quickly seized on Gauck's efforts to
play down Merkel's security pledge toward Israel. Malte Lehming, a popular
columnist and opinion page editor with the daily Tagesspiegel in Berlin, wrote
that Angela Merkel had once stressed in Jerusalem that the security and the
right of Israel to exist are integral to Germany's national security interests.
Lehming continued that "Gauck wanted to distance himself from this dictum
without directly contradicting the chancellor. That was not
successful."Lehming noted that there is now a fatal impression that
Merkel and Gauck have differences in connection with their relations to
Israel. In a separate editorial in the Tagesspiegel, the paper noted that
Gauck should have used his first state visit as president to only visit Israel
as a sign of solidarity with the Jewish state during crisis times.Gauck
followed the lead of Germany's political class, which aims to show neutrality in
the region, and visited the Palestinian Authority in the West
Bank.Chancellor Merkel, who is from the conservative Christian
Democratic Union party, had opposed Gauck's candidacy on two occasions for the
largely ceremonial position. The Social Democrats, the Green Party and Merkel's
coalition partner, the Free Democrats, supported him.Writing in the
conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, also known as the FAZ, Berthold
Kohler wrote a column titled "The avoidance of the raison d'etre" regarding
German-Israeli relations. Kohler said Merkel's commitment to Israel with the
phrase "raison d'etre" signifies support for Israel in the event of a military
conflict with Iran. The FAZ article placed a question mark over Gauck's position
toward Israel's security in connection with Iranian jingoism.Dr. Dieter
Graumann, the head of Germany's Central Council of Jews, told the Die Welt
online that Gauck delivered "wonderful words" for the German-Israeli
relationship.Graumann, who accompanied the president on his trip to
Israel, added in connection with the row over Merkel's security pledge to
Israel, " I do not see any difference between the federal chancellor and the
federal president. We should not construct any differences
here."Dr. Clemens Heni, a German political scientist who analyzes
German-Israeli relations and modern anti-Semitism in the Federal Republic, wrote
to The Jerusalem Post by email on Thursday that Chancellor Angela Merkel said in
2008 in the Knesset that the "historical responsibility" of Germany is a part of
the national interests of my country. Heni wrote that "Gauck consciously avoided
this phrase" and damaged the chancellor's stature and office.

intended to push US President Barack Obama to commute Jonathan Pollard's
sentence.

Likud MK Danny Danon will speak at a prayer rally set for June 4
intended to push US President Barack Obama to commute the sentence of
imprisoned Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard, now in his 27th year of incarceration for a conviction on one count of passing classified information to an ally - Israel.
The rally is to be held at 8:00 p.m. At the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates in Queens, NY.

In addition to Danon's address, organizers said, Cantor Netanel Herstik and the Hampton Synagogue Choir will lead the services of the special event.

A statement written by prestigious Harvard Law School Professor Alan
M. Dershowitz is also to be read at the rally, calling Pollard's
sentencing "a travesty from the start."
Dershowitz contends in his statement, which was released to Arutz Sheva
prior to the event, that the life sentence Pollard received was 'based
on a violation of the plea bargain by the prosecutor who had pledged not
to seek a life sentence and then sought one by submitting a perjured
affidavit by the virulently anti-Israel Secretary of Defense, Casper
Weinberger.
"No person who has ever pleaded guilty to spying for an ally of the
United States has ever received a sentence even close to the unjust one
imposed on Jonathan Pollard," Dershowitz notes.
"President Bill Clinton wanted very much to commute the sentence to
time served but he felt that it was impossible for him to do so in light
of the letter sent to him by several Jewish senators - some of whom
have been heroes to the Jewish community - urging him not to do so."
Most of the aforementioned senators, Dershowitz added, have since changed their mind and are now seeking commutation, as are former leaders of the intelligence community.

"President Obama, as a constitutional lawyer, should understand that
the sentence in this case is both legally and morally unacceptable,"
Dershowitz points out.
"He should immediately commute the sentence to time served and allow Jonathan Pollard to live out the remaining years of his life in Israel."

Rights group
accuses Israel of torture, restricting movement, limiting freedom of
speech, and a 'siege that strangles 1.6 million people.' According to
the group, torture and abuse are also rampant in both the PA and Hamas
governments

Amnesty International
published on Thursday its human rights report for 2012, which provides
a survey of the global human rights situation. The report addresses
human rights in 155 nations over the course of 2011 and offers a
macroview of international human rights
	 violations.

The report,
highlights of which were presented before journalists at Beit Sokolov on
Wednesday evening, notes that as Amnesty International enters its sixth
decade of work, the findings demonstrated not only the suffering of
those living in the shadow of human rights violations, but also those
who are inspired to work for human dignity.

An introduction penned by Amnesty International Israel Chairman Dr. Yishai Menuhin and general director of the group in Israel
Yonatan Ger says that 2011 was not free from widespread human rights
violations, but that looking back it was possible to say that human
rights had never been so central a subject as they were last year. "If
in the past tyranny was part of the reality of life in many countries,
last year we witnessed unprecedented civil revolts in which citizens
told their leaders: enough."

Addressing the group's activity in Israel, Menuhin and Ger said that
AI continues to protect the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, fight
ongoing housing discrimination against Palestinians,
and prevent human rights violations stemming from the Israeli "occupation."

The report addressed Israel's ongoing closure on the Gaza Strip,
saying that the situation, in existence since 2007, had created a
humanitarian crisis for 1.6 million residents, most of whom were
dependent on humanitarian aid. The report criticized the ongoing ban on
exports, which it said "choked" the economy, as well as the severe
restrictions on imports. According to AI, this has driven prices up, in
effect a collective punishment, which contravenes international law and
is particularly hard on children and the sick.
At least 36
Palestinians have been killed in accidents in smuggling tunnels or in
Israeli Air Force attacks on the tunnels, Amnesty says. In addition the
report addressed the several aid flotillas to Gaza stopped by the
Israeli government. The organization noted that while in September 2011
the UN had decreed Israel's naval siege on Gaza legal, it had not
addressed the legality of the overall closure of the Gaza Strip.

Turning to the West Bank, the Amnesty Report noted that "over 500
checkpoints and military barriers continued to complicate Palestinians'
access to employment, schools, and hospitals, while Israel continued to
build a 700-kilometer security fence. The fence, according to the
report, is built mainly on Palestinian land and separates "thousands" of
farmers from their land and water sources.
"Palestinians are
forbidden to enter areas surrounding Israeli settlements, which were
built and expanded in violation of international law," the report
states, adding that settlement construction was up. Amnesty puts the
number of settlers living in the West Bank at the end of 2011 at over
500,000.

Moreover, the report continued, in 2011 over 620 Palestinian
buildings in the West Bank had been demolished, causing 1,100
Palestinians to lose their homes, 80% more than in 2012. The group noted
that Bedouin and other shepherds had been particularly affected and
some were in danger of permanent dislocation due to restrictions on
their movement.

Amnesty said that Israel's demolition last June of 33 structures in
Al-Hadidiya in the northern Jordan Valley had left several families
without homes.
The IDF also came in
for criticism, with the report citing "unnecessary violence" by troops
against Palestinians in the West Bank and against demonstrators on the
Lebanese and Syrian borders. Amnesty says that IDF forces killed 55
Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, including 11 children. While the
army had set up investigative committees to look into some of these
incidents, the report says, the panels were not transparent or
independent.

The report also criticized Israel for not taking steps to investigate
"war crimes" or "crimes against humanity" committed by Israel during Operation Cast Lead
in 2008-9, and said that according to the Yesh Din organization nearly
90% of the police cases in which settlers were accused of violence
against Palestinians were closed, and that only 3.5% of the Palestinian
complaints about violence by IDF soldiers had led to indictments.

In addition, the Amnesty report claims, in 2011 at least 307
Palestinians from the West Bank had been held in custody in Israel
without being indicted or tried. This was possible through the use of
directives based on secret information.

Israel also continued its policy of not allowing family members of
Gazan Palestinians to visit their relatives being held in Israel
prisons, the report says, a policy that has been in place since June
2007. In some cases, according to Amnesty, the government also prevented
family members of West Bank residents from visiting them in prison.
Amnesty also cited a number of incidents of alleged torture and abuse.

Recent legislation was also cited in the report, with Amnesty arguing
that the Knesset had passed laws limiting freedom of speech and
assembly, including a law that criminalized calls to boycott Israelis or
Israeli institutions or settlements. Amnesty also vilified the Nakba
Law, which makes it illegal for Israeli institutions or local
authorities to commemorate the Palestinian "Nakba."

Finally,
Amnesty addressed the issue of refugees and asylum seekers, saying that
Israeli authorities continued to keep Eritrean and Sudanese asylum
seekers from undergoing procedures that would declare them refugees.
According to Amnesty, migrants from these two countries comprise 80% of
the total 45,000 refugee seekers in Israel. Amnesty said that they had
been issued temporary documents only and were not eligible to work or
apply for public services.

Not only Israel was criticized in the Amnesty report. The Palestinian
Authority in the West Bank and the Hamas government in Gaza are guilty
of condoning torture and violating civil rights, the group charges.

According to Amnesty, Palestinian security forces torture prisoners
and abuse them freely with no ramifications for the perpetrators.
Torture methods include beatings, suspension by the wrists or ankles,
and forcing victims to stand or sit in painful positions. Amnesty says
that four people in Gaza have died in "suspicious circumstances."

Morever, in both Gaza and the West Bank civilians continue to be
tried in Palestinian military courts, which are not independent. Hamas
reportedly staffs these courts with judges and prosecutors without the
appropriate education rather than judges appointed by the Palestinian
Authority.

Amnesty adds that hundreds of Palestinians in the West Bank have been
jailed without trial for supporting Hamas, while Hamas forces in Gaza
have arrested hundreds of Fatah supporters, most of whom were held
without being allowed legal counsel, and some of whom were abused.

The Amnesty report also says that both the PA and Hamas government
continue to quash freedom of speech, association, and assembly.
Journalists are subject to harassment and even trial, as are bloggers
and other critics. Islamic organizations are forbidden from holding
meetings or demonstrations, and women and girls are subjected to
discrimination and violence by family members. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4233846,00.html

Leading German NGOs accuse Mayor Schr"oter of promoting boycott that recalls Nazi-era campaign "Don't buy from Jews."
Leading German NGOs on Tuesday accused Social
Democratic Mayor Albrecht Schr"oter, from the city of Jena in the state
of Thuringia, of advocating a boycott of Israeli products that is so
aggressive it recalls the Nazi-era campaign "Don't buy from Jews" and contributes to the delegitimization of the Jewish state. In an email to The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday, Kevin Zdiara, deputy representative of the German- Israeli friendship
society in Erfurt, Thuringia's capital city, wrote, "The campaign makes
no distinctions; de facto, all Israeli products are to be boycotted,
which does not contribute to peace. It also strongly recalls the Nazi
slogan 'Don't buy from Jews.'" Zdiara added that "Schr"oter has been
known for years for his attitude toward Israel. The mayor has
participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the West Bank and with a lecture at a pro-Hamas conference in Bad Boll. Schr"oter is an example of the classic Christian peace activist who only accuses Israel but closes his eyes to Palestinian crimes."
Klaus Faber and Daniel Kilpert, two representatives of the Coordinating
Council of German Non-governmental Organizations against Anti-Semitism,
told the Post on Tuesday in a
statement that the mayor's conduct "crosses the line into anti-Semitism
and delegitimizes the state of Israel. Why does Mr. Schr"oter see no
occasion to call for a boycott against products from the anti-Semitic
Islamic Republic of Iran, or from North Sudan, which has engaged in many
massacres?" Klaus Faber, a prominent member of the Social Democratic
Party, served as a high level minister in the department for education, science, research, culture and religious communities in the East German state of Saxony-Anhalt.Dr. Reinhard Schramm, the deputy chairman of the Jewish community in Thuringia, told the Post on Tuesday in a telephone interview that the "boycott call is indecent and painful.
The Mayor Dr. Schr"oter should not resign because he is not an
anti-Semite. But he should know that with his signature he fosters
anti-Semitic tendencies. Pax Christi is steeped in anti-Semitism because
its variation of anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. " Dr. Schramm is a
retired professor of engineering and survived the Holocaust in hiding
with his mother, Rosel.
Mayor Schr"oter signed the German catholic
peace organization Pax Christi's petition "Occupation tastes bitter"
that calls for a sweeping boycott of Israeli goods. Dr. Shimon Samuels, director of international relations for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told the Post that Schr"oter's call for a boycott "can work both ways. It is bad for Jena businesses."

Samuels
said that what Schr"oter was doing was "racist," adding that the mayor
had "brought a shadow over the city of light." Jena is known for its
optics-based industries.Barbara Glasser, a spokeswoman for Schr"oter, told the Post by phone that the mayor is "guaranteed not an anti-Semite. He is for peace. He was awarded a civil courage prize."

Zdiara, of Erfurt's German-Israeli friendship society, says Pax Christi is known for its anti-Israel attitude.

"For
years it has demonized only Israel and now, with its call for a
boycott, has taken the side of the most aggressive Israel haters, whose
goal is to delegitimize the Jewish state," he said of the organization. http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=271950

Israel will not have one of its own in the US Congress after Itamar Gelbman, who
was raised in Herzliya, failed to force a run-off race against incumbent Joe
Barton in the Republican primary of Texas's sixth Congressional
district.

Barton won 63 percent of the vote, well over the 51% he needed
to avoid a run-off race against the second-place finisher. The 62-year-old
Congressman, who entered the House of Representative in 1984, will face off
against Democrat Kenneth Sanders on November 6.

Joe Chow, a businessman
who was a local mayor finished second with 20% of the vote. Accountant Frank
Kuchar finished third with 11%. Gelbman rounded out the pack with six percent,
winning 2355 votes.

"It's really pleasing to listen to what my opponents
have said, and watch the voters sift though the chaff and make the decision
they've made," Barton said in his victory speech. "My record was the issue in
the campaign, and I've got a really good conservative record and the voters
agreed with me."

Though Israel has refrained from issuing an official response to
indictments, sources within the foreign ministry say move reflects
tailspin in relations between Ankara and Jerusalem.

Israel did not respond officially to the submission of a Turkish indictment against four former top IDF officers ,
yet a foreign ministry official stated anonymously on Monday that the
indictment reflects a tailspin in relations between Ankara and
Jerusalem. "Erdogan is systematically killing relations between the two
states," the official said.

The court in Istanbul voted unanimously to approve an indictment
against Israel's former military chief Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, along
with the former heads of its navy, air force intelligence, and military
intelligence, Eliezer Marom, Amos Yadlin, and Avishai Levi, the Anadolu
Agency said. They face nine consecutive life terms in prison for
"inciting to kill monstrously, and by torturing," according to Turkey's
state-run news agency.

Former Chief of Staff Ashkenazi released a response saying that "Turkey
is an important state, and it shares with Israel a common interest in
stability in the Middle East, and I am sure that in the end common sense
will prevail." Ashkenazi added that "from the start of this affair I
chose to appear in every forum, and defend IDF soldiers and the IDF
itself; the soldiers and the army carried out its mission in the field,
for the benefit of the state."

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said he thinks that heavy
international pressure will be exerted on Turkey, calling on it to
scuttle this indictment. "We view this as a grave development," he said.
"Things have lost all proportion."

It is unlikely Israeli military members will be brought before Turkey's
judicial system, since Israel does not regard them as criminals. If
they are convicted in absentia at the end of the trial process, which
could take months if not years, the Turkish court could issue an order
for their arrest, but such a move would be symbolic and not binding.

According to Turkish news agencies, nine life sentences were demanded -
one for each of the casualties aboard the Mavi Marmara - as part of the
indictment, which calls for a combined 18,000 years of imprisonment for
the four former officers, punishment for crimes committed during the
raid on the Gaza-bound flotilla. The indictment includes 490 victims and
complainants, among them 189 were injured during the raid.

A Turkish court on Monday formally pressed charges against
members of Israel's military for the killing of nine people aboard a
Turkish ship trying to break Israel's blockade of Gaza in 2010, Turkey's
state-run news agency said.

The court in Istanbul voted unanimously to approve an indictment
against Israel's former military chief Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, along
with the former heads of its navy, air force intelligence, and military
intelligence, Eliezer Marom, Amos Yadlin, and Avishai Levi, the
Anadolu Agency said. They face nine consecutive life terms in prison for
"inciting to kill monstrously, and by torturing," the agency added.

A week ago, the Turkish newspaper "Sabah" first reported the upcoming
indictments; however Israeli officials refused to comment on the reports
until they were endorsed by the Turkish government, or until the
indictments were delivered to the court.

The move comes just a few days ahead of the second anniversary of the
May 31 raid. The ship had been part of a flotilla sailing toward Gaza to
protest Israel's blockade.

The court also agreed to press charges against several unidentified
soldiers who raided the ship, the Turkish news agency said. No trial
date has been set. Turkey has tried without success to get Israel to
apologize for the attack, and to compensate those killed as a
precondition for normalizing relations. Israel has solely expressed
regret for the loss of lives.

Israel says its troops opened fire after coming under attack by
activists wielding axes, knives and metal rods. It says soldiers
rappelled on to the deck armed with non-lethal paintball guns as their
primary weapons, and only resorted to using handguns after they were
assaulted.

The indictment rejected Israeli claims that Israeli commandos who
boarded the Mavi Marmara acted in self defense, saying that Israeli
commandos used disproportional force by firing with heavy weapons and
automatic rifles on passengers who only carried "plastic flag masts,
spoons, and forks."

The indictment said some of the victims were shot dead from close range and from the back, the agency reported earlier.

The charges against members of the Israeli military, included
commandeering vehicles, voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder,
persecution and causing damage to the ship, the agency said Monday.

A United Nations probe into the incident found Israel's naval blockade
of Gaza legally imposed "as a legitimate security measure" but added
that the killing of eight Turkish activists and a Turkish-American was
"unacceptable."

Turkey has rejected the report's findings, saying Israel had no right
to raid the ship in international waters and said it would never
recognize the blockade's legitimacy.

Turkey has also slapped a series of sanctions on Israel, once a top
military trading partner, which included expelling senior Israeli
diplomats and suspending all military deals. It has also vowed to back
the Palestinian bid for recognition of their statehood at the United
Nations.

Investigation of two West Bank rabbis who wrote a religious text,
Torat Hamelech fails to produce necessary evidence on which to base an
indictment for incitement to racism and violence, AG says.

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein announced on Monday that he is
closing the investigation of two revered West Bank rabbis who wrote a
religious text, Torat Hamelech (The King's Torah ), which argues there
are times when Jews are allowed to kill gentiles who pose no physical
threat of violence. The authors are rabbis Yitzhak Shapira and Yosef
Elitzur, while the text was endorsed by leading Chabad Rabbi Yitzhak
Ginzburg and Kiryat Arba Rabbi Dov Lior.

Weinstein wrote that the investigation failed to produce the necessary
evidence on which to base an indictment for incitement to racism and
violence against the book's authors and supporters. "Evidence issues
enjoin the closing of this case," wrote Weinstein. "Negative responses
to this book can be made at the public level."

The attorney general's decision stirred vehement criticism on Monday,
particularly on the part of complainants who turned to the High Court of
Justice with demands that the rabbis responsible for the text be
indicted, and that the book's dissemination be blocked. The High Court
petition is still pending. The complainants contend that Weinstein's
decision creates a precedent, one never intended by the country's
legislative branch - that rabbis can incite in a violent or racist
fashion with impunity.

The book Torat Hamelech, published in 2009, is described by its authors
as a discussion of circumstances in which Jewish law permits killing in
times of war and peace. Among other judgments, the book states: "When
we approach a gentile who has violated the seven laws of Noah and kill
him out of devotion to the upholding of these Noahide laws, this is not
forbidden." Elsewhere, the book holds that "a person who encourages war
provides strength to a king and his soldiers who persist with the war.
Thus any person in a kingdom who encourages soldiers or tolerates their
actions can be considered a dangerous pursuer , and can be
killed." In February 2011 a decision was reached to open an
investigation of the authors and those who endorsed it publicly.
Following this decision, Shapira and Elitzur were questioned. Lior was
also summoned for questioning, but ignored the summons for months, and
eventually announced he would not answer it.

On Monday, Assistant State Prosecutor Shlomi Abramson wrote to those
who complained to Weinstein about this text, including Adalah - the
Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, and the Israel
Religious Action Center. Abramsom's letter indicates that Shapira and
Elitzur invoked their right to remain silent when questioned by police.
However, the two detailed the rationale behind the book in a letter they
sent to the Education Ministry's director general, explaining it is a
"book about Jewish law which reviews and explicates Torah sources. The
book does not dictate how people should act; this is not a book that
conveys orders for action, and is instead a book for study and
discussion written in terminology used in yeshiva discourse."

The authors claimed their book states explicitly that "the killing of a
gentile is forbidden by Torah," but they immediately added:"the text
indicates that harm can only be brought to a person who does not uphold
the seven laws of Noah, and such harm can only come about in special
circumstances."

Yousri Nasrallah
says he doesn't wants his film about post-revolution Egypt to be shown
in Israel 'as long as the Israelis still occupy Palestinian territories'

Amir Kaminer

			Published: 05.18.12, 10:53 / Israel Culture

During an interview
about his latest film "After the Battle," Egyptian director Yousry
Nasrallah was asked whether he was aware that it has been picked up for
distribution in Israel,
	 Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

"I do not know at all if the film was sold to Israel," he replied
"but if you want my opinion, no, I do not want it to be. Not as long as
the Israelis still occupy the Palestinian territories," he said during a
press conference in Cannes, as several journalists applauded"After the Battle" takes
places in post-revolution Egypt and has entered into the Cannes Film
Festival official competition. It has recently been purchased for
screening in Israel.

"A number of great Israeli directors are my friends, such as Avi Mograbi and Amos Gitai.
But it's not me who decides whether the films should be sold to Israel or not," Nasrallah said.

"I don't think that while the Egyptians are still in their first
stage moving towards liberation from their own regime, from oppression
and military governance, Israel would be an ally in favor of such
liberation," the 60-year-old filmmaker told the press conference.

Oded Horowitz, CEO of Israeli distribution company Orlando Films
was surprised to learn of Nasrallah's comment. "I find it odd that a
director whose film offers a very complex look at the outcomes of the
current revolution in Egypt would respond this way," he told Yedioth
Ahronoth.

"I
purchased the film from its French production company and we intend to
screen it in Israel soon. This will serve as further proof that Israeli
society is much more diverse and open than it gets credit for."

"After the Battle" tells the story of two individuals at an
impoverished area near the Pyramids after the popular uprising in Tahrir
Square and the bond that is formed between them.

Nasrallah says he wanted to show the human aspect of the revolution and how normal people handle big events.

in 1972 to hold a moment of silence to mark 40 years since their
killin during the opening ceremony of this summer's games in London.

"The International Olympic Committee has held official memorials for
the athletes a number of times," wrote IOC President Jacques Rogge. "The
memory of the victims of the horrible killing in Munich in 1972 will
never fade in the Olympic family."
Rogge added that he "had
to" deny the request but said that the IOC would be present at the
memorial ceremonies organized by the Israeli delegation.
Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon
has also voiced his support for an official moment of silence and a
month ago sent a letter to the IOC in which he wrote: "A moment of
silence will send a clear message that we must not forget the terrible
events 40 years ago in Munich, lest they happen again."

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yigal Palmor characterized the IOC's denial as "polite but firm."

"It's a shame that the IOC isn't worried about the entire Olympic
family, since the awful attack was contrary to the Olympic spirit,"
Palmor added.
An IOC spokesman said
that he was working in close cooperation with the Israel Olympic
Committee on the memorial ceremony scheduled to take place in London
and said that the event would be the "most appropriate place" to
commemorate the Munich attack and that similar ceremonies were held at
every Olympic Games.
"The IOC has refused for 40 years, but I still hope that they will change their mind."

The Israel Olympic Committee said in response that "After 40 years,
it's time for the Olympic movement to recognize the 11 athletes,
coaches, and referees who were murdered during the games as victims of
the Olympic movement and the IOC. The right way to honor their memory
will be found."
"The Israel Olympic
Committee believes that the disaster is an inseparable part of the
Olympic movement. The IOC has a moral obligation to honor their memory
appropriately, and pass their legacy on to the new generation."

Simon Wiesenthal Center calls for Norbert Darabos to step down after his comments on Iran, FM Liberman; Austria balks.
BERLIN - Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Simon Wiesenthal Center's director for
international relations, has called for the resignation of Austria's Defense
Minister Norbert Darabos. The minister has been playing down the Iranian
nuclear threat against Arab Gulf countries and Israel and singling out Israel
for biased treatment, he said.
Related: Austrian minister calls Liberman 'unbearable' Darabos "should resign" because "he has
discredited Austrian impartiality in terms of Iran, especially as Austria is
host to the International Atomic Energy Agency and this is extremely dangerous,"
Samuels told The Jerusalem Post in an exclusive interview on
Tuesday.Samuels "finds it very strange" that Darabos continues to be
defense minister, because the "Austrian government has disassociated itself from
the minister, and logically he should have no standing on defense."It is
extremely worrisome to see Austria take any role in Iran negotiations through
this mouthpiece," he added. At the EU human rights agency in Vienna,
Samuels said Darabos's attacks on Israel meet the EU's definition of modern
anti-Semitism, and they are even more disturbing "when you take into context his
statement playing down the Iranian threat."In an interview with the the
Vienna-based Die Presse over the weekend, Darabos called Foreign Minister
Avigdor Liberman "unbearable," downplayed the Iranian threat, and accused Israel
of using it - and the Palestinian issue - to sidetrack attention from domestic
problems."Mr. Liberman is unbearable for me as a member of the Israeli
government," Darabos said in the interview. In connection with Iran, he said
that Israel's "threats" were "unnecessary" because "Iran is not ready to build
the bomb."When asked if Darabos plans to resign, Stefan Hirsch, a
spokesman for the Austrian Defense Ministry, wrote the Post by email on
Wednesday that the "call to resign is ridiculous. A resignation is not
being discussed in Austria. The minister has, in contrast, received
support."Chancellor Werner Faymann and Foreign Minister Michael
Spindelegger have, however, distanced themselves from Darabos's statements,
saying his comments do not reflect the position of the Austrian government.
Austria's largest daily, Kronen Zeitung, slammed Darabos in a commentary by the
popular columnist Michael Jeann'ee. He compared Darabos to the former Waffen SS
member and writer G"unter Grass and his anti-Israel tirades. Darabos has "damaged
Austria's official policies," Jeann'ee wrote.Darabos remained defiant on
Wednesday. He told the Post that Liberman is an "ultra-right politician" and in
an interview with an Austrian paper earlier in the week, he said he stands "100
percent" behind his criticism of the Jewish state.Yacov Stiassny, from
the Israel-based Central Committee for Jews in Austria, wrote the Post by email
on Wednesday that in connection with Darabos that though anti- Semitism is no
longer respectable in Europe since the end of the Third Reich (and legally
prohibited in Austria), "criticism of Israel is popular. Therefore, the
new anti-Semites dress themselves up as critics of Israel and guardians of the
Palestinians."He added, "I do not want to contend that Darabos is anti-
Semitic, but he is certainly no friend of Israel."Abraham H. Foxman,
national director, Anti-Defamation League, wrote to the Post on Tuesday, "The
Austrian government did the difficult but right thing of publicly criticizing
one of its ministers. We had been in contact with the Austrian government and
received a similar response."Deidre Berger, the head of the American
Jewish Committee office in Berlin, told the Post on Wednesday, "Castigating the
work of an Israeli cabinet minister as insufferable is an attack on core values
of dignity and civility. Denouncing the foreign minister of an allied country in
this manner is irresponsible, manifesting double standards and raising troubling
questions of perceptions of Israel in Europe. Those who dabble in anti-Semitic
imagery by delegitimizing the officials of a democratic government should not be
surprised at the results."She continued, "Foreign Minister Avigdor
Liberman is a staunch supporter of German- Israeli relations. He has made a
praiseworthy contribution to strengthening this important relationship. One can
only hope that his efforts to create a deeper level of German-European- Israeli
understanding would be recognized and not condemned by European
counterparts."Oskar Deutsch, the head of Austria's Jewish community,
told the Post on Tuesday that Darabos's statements were "unnecessary" and that
he was pleased that Austria's Foreign Ministry dismissed the remarks as not
reflecting the positions of its government.According to Die Presse,
Israel's Ambassador Aviv Shir-On said, "What we wanted to say, the Austrian
Foreign Ministry has already said." http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=271125
