'Infandous*' George Galloway banned from Canada on grounds of national security (*look it up)

George Galloway has been barred from Canada on national security grounds.
The outspoken MP, who opposes the war in Afghanistan where Canadian troops are deployed, was due to make a speech in Toronto on March 30.
But a spokesman for immigration minister Jason Kenney said Mr Galloway was viewed as a supporter of the radical Palestinian group Hamas, which is banned in Canada.
The Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, who is on a North American speaking tour, vowed to use all means at his disposal to challenge the 'outrageous' ban.
He called the move a 'desperate election ploy' by a Conservative government.
But a spokesman for Canada's immigration minister Jason Kenney insisted the decision, taken by border security officials, would not be overturned for a 'infandous* street-corner Cromwell' (*'infandous: too odious to be expressed or mentioned).
Mr Galloway was due to give a speech in Toronto on March 30 but has been deemed 'inadmissible' to Canada under section 34(1) of the country's immigration act.
Mr Kenney's spokesman Alykhan Velshi said the act was designed to protect Canadians from people who fund, support or engage in terrorism.
The minister has the right to issue special exemption permits but will not do so in Mr Galloway's case.
Mr Velshi said: 'We're going to uphold the law, not give special treatment to this infandous street-corner Cromwell who actually brags about giving 'financial support' to Hamas, a terrorist organisation banned in Canada.
'I'm sure Galloway has a large Rolodex of friends in regimes elsewhere in the world willing to roll out the red carpet for him. Canada, however, won't be one of them.'
Mr Galloway, 54, MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, is consulting organisers of his north American speaking tour and exploring whether legal action can be taken to overturn the ban.
Mr Galloway, an opponent of the war in Afghanistan where Canadian troops are deployed as part of international forces, lamented the 'idiotic' ruling as 'irrational, inexplicable and an affront to Canada's good name'.
And the Scot also said being refused entry to Canada was like being told to stay away from the family home.
Mr Galloway said: 'This is a very sad day for the Canada we have known and loved - a bastion of the freedoms that supporters of the occupation of Afghanistan claim to be defending.
'This has further vindicated the anti-war movement's contention that unjust wars abroad will end up consuming the very liberties that make us who we are.

'This may be a rather desperate election ploy by a conservative government reaching the end of the line, or by a minister who has not cottoned on to the fact that the George Bush era is over.

'All right-thinking Canadians, whether they agree with me over the wisdom of sending troops to Afghanistan or not, will oppose this outrageous decision.

'On a personal note - for a Scotsman to be barred from Canada is like being told to stay away from the family home.

'This is not something I'm prepared to accept.'
Mr Galloway was due to speak at a public forum entitled Resisting war from Gaza to Kandahar, hosted by Toronto Coalition to Stop the War later this month.
The Respect party MP was also set to address a second public forum in Mississauga, just south of Toronto, on March 31.
His proposed visit prompted the Jewish Defence League of Canada to write an open letter to the country's government urging it to do 'everything possible to keep this hater away'.
In 2006, Mr Galloway was refused entry to Egypt on the grounds of national security after he travelled to the country to give evidence at a 'mock trial' of former prime minister Tony Blair and ex-US president George W Bush.
He was held overnight in a police cell before the authorities changed their minds and allowed him in, and he later received a personal apology from the country's president.

A spokesman for Citizenship and Immigration Canada confirmed that Mr Galloway had been deemed inadmissible on national security grounds and would not be allowed into the country.
He said the decision had been taken by border security officials 'based on a number of factors' in accordance with section 34(1) of the country's immigration act.
The act states: 'A permanent resident or a foreign national is inadmissible on security grounds for:
'(a) engaging in an act of espionage or an act of subversion against a democratic government, institution or process as they are understood in Canada;
'(b) engaging in or instigating the subversion by force of any government;
'(c) engaging in terrorism;
'(d) being a danger to the security of Canada;
'(e) engaging in acts of violence that would or might endanger the lives or safety of persons in Canada; or
'(f) being a member of an organisation that there are reasonable grounds to believe engages, has engaged or will engage in acts referred to in paragraph (a), (b) or (c).'
Immigration minister Jason Kenney has the right to exempt people from the act if it is felt that their presence would not be 'detrimental to the national interest'.
But the spokesman said Mr Kenney would 'decline to exercise that discretion' in Mr Galloway's case.

Arrested Man's Parents Speak Out About Mentally Ill Neglect Case (:43)

CHANDLER -- Parents of a man charged with failing to report a felony in progress say their son and his girlfriend are not to blame for the condition of a mentally retarded man found in a locked room and covered in feces.

Neighbor Paula Durham said the couple, who left 42-year-old Kerry Cotten in the room, while they ran from police with their 14-year-old autistic son, should be the ones to carry the blame.

Durham's 19-year-old son Curtis and his girlfriend Alyssia Johnson were arrested at the home on County Road 3409 Wednesday, about four miles southwest of Tyler. Searching for Alyssia's father officers found Cotten, the girl's mentally retarded uncle, in a room behind a latch.

Alyssia's father Roy Johnson and her stepmother Lea Johnson were arrested by Tyler police at a Tyler fast food restaurant Friday afternoon.

Officers described Cotten as resembling a wild animal wearing a dirty adult diaper and a sweater. His hair was matted; he was covered in feces and could only make grunting noises.

Officers said the man ran to the kitchen and tried to eat frozen bacon and a TV dinner through the box.

But Mrs. Durham said she has lived next door to the family for 30 years and the man has always torn things up in the kitchen if he was left unattended even for just a moment.

"The media has this portrayed as these monstrous people who kept a man locked up in a room, but the lock they talk about was a simple screen door hook and if Kerry wanted out he could get out. He does have very violent outbursts and is hard to control sometimes. I am not saying that the conditions are not deplorable, because they are and I and many others have made calls to report this over the years," she said.

Mrs. Durham said Curtis and Alyssia are just kids and they aren't responsible for Alyssia's parents leaving her at the house while they were gone.

"They set her up. They have framed these kids because they left the home knowing that the police were coming. He was only in the room about six hours. Not days, weeks or months like we were led to believe in what we have seen in the media," she said.

Mrs. Durham also contends the Texas Adult Protective Services, the Henderson County Sheriff's Office and other agencies have all failed to act on complaints levied by multiple neighbors and family members about the conditions in the home.

"Every time APS came out to the house it seemed as if Lea and Roy had forewarning so they would clean up the house and make sure Kerry was clean and the APS worker would say the home was habitable and he was being cared for," she said.

Officers who found the man said there were large holes in the floor and ceiling throughout the home and that the home reeked of the smell of human waste.

The woman also said the state and the local school district knew the 14-year-old was not in school and no one has ever asked any questions.

"He has never gone to school and they know he is here because the state used to send out nurses and physical therapists to work with him. This just shows to me that this whole thing has slipped through the cracks," she said.

Mrs. Durham said she does not socialize with Roy or Lea and is not taking up for the couple, but did know they took Kerry to the Andrews Center and to Tyler doctors regularly for treatments and appointments.

"They were running from the police for Roy's warrants and they just left Kerry at home. I really don't even know if Alyssia was aware her uncle was home. They told her to tell police that her parents were not home," she said.

Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said his agency did not find any reports on the home before this week.

"We've run a check on it and we don't show getting any calls about this before now. I'm not saying there hasn't been any calls made to this office, but our records don't show it," he said.

When asked if it was possible reports were made with other agencies and why the 14-year-old son was not in school, Nutt said he did not know, but everything would be checked.

Nutt also did not know who had custody of the 14-year old since his parent's arrests.

"All I know is what we found out at that house, what our follow-up has shown and this case is still under investigation," he said.

All three of the Johnsons remain behind bars in the Henderson County Jail on charges of injury to a disabled person. Curtis Durham was released on $25,000 bond Thursday.

Second brother surrenders in Alton fight
The second of two brothers charged in connection with a shooting Sunday morning in Alton has surrendered to authorities.

Bryon D. Blake, 17, of Godfrey surrendered this morning at the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville, where his brother was already being held.

Also on today, Madison County prosecutors filed an additional charge against each of the brothers.

Documents filed Tuesday in Circuit Court accused Bryon Blake and Byron E. Blake, 21, of armed violence and aggravated battery with a firearm. New charges filed today accuse each of the men of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Alton police sought the initial charges after viewing a video recording of a fistfight between two men that ended in gunfire that wounded another man. Ryan H. North, 19, of the 500 block of Porter Street in Alton, suffered a superficial back wound.

The fight and shooting were outside the home of North's sister, L'Tanya M. Smith, in the 1500 block of Mack Street. Smith recorded the fight with a digital camera

New mexico DWI Attorney ,Arrested For DWI (14:56)

Attorney John Higgins is facing DWI charges after being arrested Wednesday by Albuquerque police

According to Metropolitan Court records, officers were dispatched to the area of Mountain and 12th after a silver Mercedes struck a curb and the driver was seen leaving the area. When officers arrived they found the car with a flat tire and the driver, who they identified as Higgins, down the street near a cafe.

When officers talked to Higgins, 65, he was sitting on curb and showed "signs of intoxication," the complaint states. Police said Higgins had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and they could smell alcohol on his breath. The attorney also had dirt "all over" the back of his blazer and the front of his paints, the complaint states.

Police said Higgins became "hostile" and refused to take any field sobriety tests. At one point, he told the officer "you are so screwed," according to the complaint. Higgins also refused to give a breath sample and was arrested on charges of aggravated DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and having an expired license plate.

The arrest marked the second time Higgins has been charged with DWI. According to court records, Higgins was arrested in 2001 after he was stopped at University and Menaul NE. Charges in that case were dismissed because the state was not ready to prosecute, according to court records.

Higgins is a longtime DWI defense attorney, and court records show that he has about 18 clients he is currently representing in Metropolitan Court who face DWI charges. In 2002, Higgins argued before the state's Court of Appeals that DWI roadblocks were unconstitutional. He was representing Esther Villas and claimed an Albuquerque Police Department officer's favoritism in operating the roadblock rendered his client's DWI arrest in August 2000 an abuse of discretion and therefore unconstitutional. The Court of Appeals refused to dismiss Villas' DWI conviction

The star of a spectacular State Police dashboard cam video of a wild pursuit on Nov. 23 walked out of court Monday, freed without bond because a statement from the arresting officer didn't show up in Sandoval County Magistrate Court on time. Roy Aguilar is facing charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated after leading police on a chase along N.M. 16 west of Interstate 25 toward Cochiti Lake, during which he weaved back and forth across the highway, narrowly missing at least one oncoming vehicle, then having his truck run over his legs when he stopped. Aguilar was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and then to jail, but on Monday he was released on his own recognizance because the State Police officer's probable-cause statement wasn't in the file.

3-D Animation Of The Timoshenko Shooting (3:11)

Robert Ellis acquitted of murder in Russel Timoshenko-slay trial; convicted of weapons possession
An ex-con accused of the cold-blooded slaying of Police Officer Russel Timoshenko in a Brooklyn traffic stop was cleared of murder Wednesday night - a verdict that drew outrage and bewilderment.

A Brooklyn Supreme Court jury also found Robert Ellis, 35, not guilty of trying to murder Timoshenko's partner, Officer Herman Yan, 27, but convicted him of three counts of weapons possession, with each count punishable by up to 15 years.

Prosecutors convinced that Ellis was a triggerman in the attack are expected to ask for the full 45 years. He had faced life without parole on the murder charge.

Yan was hit in the chest and arm in the July 9, 2007, shooting but survived.

"I am stunned and disappointed by the verdict," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. "My prayers are with the Timoshenko family as they contend with this ordeal."

The verdict, reached after 10 hours of deliberation by the racially mixed jury, also shocked into silence the courtroom packed with relatives and cops and had some jurors questioning whether justice was done.

The 23-year-old victim's mother, Tatyana, shook her head when the verdict was announced, and her eyes filled with tears. The slain cop's dad, Leonid, stood erect, his eyes burning with anger, and glared at the jurors.

An aunt, Inna Apanasyuk, wailed, "No way, no way is this justice. This is a Broadway show. They took him away in two seconds for nothing, for nothing."

Prosecutor Mark Hale bowed his head and let it rest on the prosecutors table.

Prosecutors said Ellis and Dexter Bostic, 34, were the gunmen. A third suspect, Lee Woods, 30, claimed he was the driver.

Timoshenko and Yan were shot in Crown Heights when they stopped what they thought might be a stolen $30,000 BMW.

The shootings sparked a manhunt that spanned several states and didn't end until Ellis and Bostic were captured in the Pocono Mountains four days later.

Ellis and the two other ex-cons were tried by separate juries. Jurors got the case against Woods Wednesday night. The panel deciding Bostic's fate is to be instructed on the law today.

The Ellis verdict didn't sit well with some on the jury.

"There's no argument in my eyes," said alternate juror Luis Viera, 44, who sat in the jury box for five weeks. "If he was in the car, he killed them. If you're acting in concert, you should be held accountable. They were planning to shoot the poor cops."

A bearded, bespectacled juror in his late 30s said "a lot of us didn't understand the difference between the laws."

A furious Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch declared outside the court: "This mongrel today got away with murder. There is no way to describe the anger that the New York City cops have."

Asked in court after the verdict was reached if they agreed with the decision, jurors replied yes, but did so meekly.

Defense lawyer Danielle Eaddy said she was happy with the verdict, then second-guessed the prosecution.

"They should have tried this as if Woods was the shooter," she said, adding, "There are really no winners. You have a New York City police officer who is dead and another who almost lost his life. I and Mr. Ellis are grateful that the jury listened to our case."

A federal jury on Friday awarded $25,000 to a Muslim former prisoner who claimed a corrections officer deliberately released death-row inmate Troy Michael Kell from a cell so Kell could attack him.

The money is compensatory damages for Jacques Dupree Miranda, who alleged his right to be free of cruel and unusual punishment was violated by the attack at the Utah State Prison in Draper.

The 12-member jury, which deliberated about six hours, gave him nothing in punitive damages.

Miranda, who had asked for at least $1 million, said he was happy the jury acknowledged his rights were violated. He had wanted a financial award chiefly as a way to prevent similar attacks, he added.

Because he is the prevailing party in a civil rights case, he can ask the court to award separate, reasonable fees to his attorney.

Miranda, who is of African-American and French heritage, alleged he was harassed by corrections officers and inmates after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks because of his faith.

Kell -- described by authorities as a white supremacist -- squeezed out of his cell on Sept. 20, 2001, when Officer Ryan Healey opened the door slightly from a control panel to allow him to reach for a bucket of ice. Kell confronted Miranda in a recreation area and chased him back into his cell.

Miranda, 34, a convicted robber who now is free, alleged he was knocked unconscious by Kell and suffered severe injuries.

William Hanson, Healey's lawyer, acknowledged at trial that it was a mistake to open the door but said Miranda suffered minor injuries and there was no intent by the officer to hurt him.

Kell was condemned to die for murdering Lonnie Blackmon, whom he stabbed 67 times on July 6, 1994, at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison. Prosecutors said Kell, who already was serving two life sentences for murder, killed Blackmon because he was black. The state of Utah, while denying wrongdoing, paid $175,000 to Blackmon's family to settle a lawsuit

Officers Say House Was Filled With Feces, Urine

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Yamhill county deputies went to George Andrews' home Tuesday night, to arrest him on outstanding warrants. That's when they found nearly 50 diseased cats and two dogs trapped in deplorable conditions, deputies said.

Out of more than 50 animals on the property, 27 cats and two dogs were rounded up and brought to Yamhill County Dog Control.

Animal control officers said considering the conditions the animals were living in, they can't believe they survived this long.

The two dogs and more than two dozen cats at the Yamhill Dog Control were just half of what deputies said they found inside Andrews' house.Whiting spent the day rounding up as many cats from the home as she could.

Several of the cats got scared and escaped, but under couches and piles of trash, she rescued 27 of them, including a litter of newborn kittens.

"I would think that they would notice, but I go for a walk by here every day and I've never seen any animals like that," Tom Bailey said.

People who have lived around the area for years, even close neighbors, were shocked that they never knew so many animals were in the home. They said if they'd known about the filthy conditions, they would've called for help.

Experts said the cats have respiratory diseases and ringworm, but there is a good chance they'll recover.

Whiting said she thinks they are definitely survivors.

"Fortunately, we didn't find any dead animals in there, which is better than I can say for some of the (calls) we've been on," Whiting said.

Investigators said Andrews will probably face charges related to animal abuse.
