If you believe that most terrorists are crazy, psycho, or suicidal you are wrong. 30 years of research has failed to identify a good profile of a terrorist. We now know that terrorists are no more likely to have mood disorders, psychopathology, or personality disorders than non-terrorists from the same background. If you think that terrorists are immoral and have no empathy for others you are also wrong. Let's look at this rationally. Imagine yourself as a terrorist, pick one, any one. You are living an often nomad existence underground, in fear of being discovered and stopped. The only people that are around you are people who share your own goals. Would you want an unstable whacko living with you? Someone who is so out of touch with reality that they cannot be depended on, or could hurt you or other members of your group before your goal was met. Not probably. Organized terrorist groups who can plan successful attacks are also likely to be within the normal range of personality. In fact, individuals chosen for a terrorist mission have undoubtedly demonstrated that they are trustworthy, reliable, loyal, organized, intelligent, and dedicated to a specific cause. Increasingly, terrorist groups are recruiting highly skilled professionals who have expertise in fields such as communications, computer programming, engineering, finance, and the sciences. Terrorists use groups and networks for both logistical and psychological support. Groups afford a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose, and perhaps even a sense of identity. Terrorism is generally defined as the use or threat of violence, by small groups against non-combatants of large groups, for avowed goals. We have a tendency to correlate religion with acts of terrorism. This is far from fact. While religious fanaticism creates conditions that are favorable for terrorism, it does not cause it. The three primary causes of terrorism are feelings of social, political, and historical injustice. Terrorism is the warfare of the weak. It is the final recourse when all other conventional methods have failed. Of course, there are the lone wolf terrorists. These are individuals who commit violent acts in support of some group, movement, or ideology, but who does so alone. They are not affiliated with any command structure and do not get resource assistance from any group. Examples of lone wolf terrorists include Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma City bombing), Theodore Kaczynski, (the "Unabomber-he actually was schizophrenic), and Eric Robert Rudolph (the Olympic Park bomber). The current belief is that the Boston Marathon bombers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev acted as lone wolf terrorists. Obviously, it is much more difficult to identify and prevent potential attacks from self-radicalized individuals acting alone or in small groups. Yes, normal people can be terrorists. Normalcy is a characteristic feature of terrorists, they just blend in. The Tsarnaev brothers are a perfect example of this, all the news reports and interviews reinforced that they were normal Joes. Remember that terrorists are not born terrorists. Let's look at Bin Laden. Osama didn't wake up one morning and decide to be a terrorist. The path was long and arduous. Terrorists, like Bin Laden, kill for a combination of shared ideology in conjunction with extremely intense small group dynamics. Most people believe in something bigger than life. Many of us call this entity God in one form or another. We need to make sense and meaning in our life...and of our death. Most people identify with a group whose core sense of values related to family, religion, ethnicity, and nationality are similar to theirs. Some people are willing to kill for, and to die for, these values. Why else would you have joined the law enforcement profession? Or why would men and women enlist in the military? The point is that most people are capable of terrorist acts under some circumstances. The five main objectives of political terrorists are quite clear: Creating mass anxiety, fear, and panic Fostering a sense of helplessness and hopelessness Demonstrating the incompetence of the authorities Destroying a sense of security and safety Provoking inappropriate reactions from individuals, authorities, and/or governments Additionally, large-scale terrorist incidents can have adverse effects on world financial markets, travel and tourism. The Strategies of Terrorist Aggression There are two kinds of aggression; emotional and instrumental. Emotional aggression is associated with anger; it doesn't consider long-term consequences. The goal of emotional aggression is hurting someone who has hurt you. Instrumental aggression is more calculating; it is used as a means to meet other more enduring ends. Terrorist aggression usually involves both. The act inflicts immediate damage and results in the destruction of life and property. However, and far more importantly, terrorists hope that the long-term effects will be much more devastating. The Long-Term Goals of Terrorist Attacks Fundamentally, terrorists want to create fear and uncertainty far beyond the immediate victims and those close to them. Terrorist want "the enemy" to spend an inordinate amount of time, energy and money on security. Essentially this forces their target to transfer resources from productive purposes to anti-productive security measures. Terrorists particularly hope to elicit a violent response that will assist them in mobilizing their own people. A violent counter attack to a terrorist act that is not well aimed is a success for the terrorists. this will assist them in mobilizing their own people Terrorists also hope for a reaction of stereotyping and prejudice in which the terrorists are seen as typical members of the cause they say they are fighting for. Often terrorists' most dangerous opposition comes from moderates on their own side who seek alternatives other than violence. Profiling or any other perceived infringement of civil rights can encourage a sense of unfair victimization by everyone involved. What about the Suicide Bomber? While most individuals who attempt and/or complete suicide display signs and symptoms of depression, terrorist do not. That is because the primary aim of the suicide is not to die, but to actualize a mission on behalf of a cause. Their motivation invariably stems from rage and a sense of self-righteousness. They view themselves as soldiers willing to sacrifice themselves for a higher purpose, contributors to the accomplishment of a greater good. They seek revenge and crave publicity. Ideally, individuals with the highest status make the best suicide candidates; those with the most to lose raise the credibility of the group's cause. From that moment on, in every European city, from Norway to Cyprus they have begun action regarding information about Syria, and protests without rest. Posters, public demonstrations with Syrians expatriates and immigrants, open speeches, interviews and other events have put the ESFS on the map. Others demonstrated with flags in public, others use posters and stickers, others distribute flyers, others are organizing open rallies in school. They are invaded. Syrians are defending their land and their sovereignty against terrorism and western media's propaganda. In Syria there lives a lot of Greco-Christians. Mostly Christians are going through an unparalleled ethnic cleansing . Syrian people are fighting against external aggression and for our sake. We are obliged to be their voice in Europe. Not just because tomorrow it could happen to us, but because we believe that solidarity should be our highest value in this world. When our neighbor's house is on fire we cannot just stand and watch, doing nothing. We must show the same sensitivity, whether it's about Kosovo, Palestine and of course we would like the same solidarity for Cyprus. We do not face these as other people's problems. Greece has experienced ethnic cleansing during the 400 years of Turkish occupation and thanks to European solidarity we have internationalized our cause. Who do you think are behind these events in Syria? Do you categorize Syria' s case in "Arab Spring"? Yes, although the term "Arab Spring" is kind of ambiguous and it's has not the same attributes in all Arab countries. It evokes certain feelings to Europeans, but it's not the same. It is, without doubt, an attempt of Washington's "hawks" and their allies to overturn Arabic regimes that have remained sovereign. They want to overturn geopolitical balance in the area, and on the other hand to capture those weak economies by establishing puppet regimes. It' s "divide and rule" politic. In some countries of course there was social injustice, but not in Syria. We, in Syria's case, defend the people's rights to freedom and independence. Islamic fanaticism that is actually supported by the US Government and their allies... If Assad falls, then a State which protects minorities and respects tolerance and religious freedom will fall. Sharia and violence will rule, with women and non Muslims being the first and biggest victims. Just as has happened in Libya and Egypt. Among Syrian "rebels" there are fundamentalist Islamists, who are trained by the American army, that at the same time is at war with Islamists. What do you think about this collaboration? Fundamentalist Islamists, who a few years ago were called "terrorists" by western media, now are called "fighters for democracy" and are given stockpiles of weaponry, technical help, training, guidance, and international recognition. Because US and their allies are weak and do not wish to engage in a new series of wars directly, they are using fundamentalist Islamists to overthrow regimes they don't like. Then, political interference will follow. The biggest weapon in this asymmetric war are western Media. Europeans are inactive, because they are victims of misinformation and propaganda. Also, we must note that if Syria becomes an Islamic regime, then Iran will be next. In this case, Iran, a Shia Islamic country, will be surrounded by Sunni Islamic countries. Noting that Islamic world now lives their own medieval ages, an civil religious war has to be expected, sooner or later. Western Allies will try to trigger it against Iran, or in an invasion against it they will keep other countries, at least neutralized. How do you judge Greek State's stance, in this case? As always, subdued in imperialist's orders. That which is most horrific is the betrayal of a friend and allied country, and abandoning the local Greek population. Greece has to support peace and stability in Mediterranean. It's for her own sake. Already it 's experiencing the consequences and the future brings more. President George Bush gave his now famous explanation: "They hate our freedoms." Radical Islam, we are told, is to blame . When someone dares counter this argument by pointing out that "Muslim rage" is due to U.S. foreign policy, accusations of disloyalty quickly abound. We all remember what happened to Ron Paul when he had the audacity to claim that they didn't hate us for our freedoms, but rather "they attack us because we've been over there ." In other words, they terrorize us because we've been terrorizing them. Ron Paul was booed and his explanation was dubbed "absurd," to the glee of the audience. Yet, the terrorists themselves consistently explain why they attack us. Osama bin Laden himself responded to George Bush: Contrary to what Bush says and claims -- that we hate freedom --let him tell us then, "Why did we not attack Sweden?" ... Bush is...misleading you and not telling you the true reason. The real reason, explained Bin Laden, was that we had to destroy the towers in America so that they taste what we tasted, and they stop killing our women and children ... Your security is in your own hands. Any nation that does not attack us will not be attacked. Subsequent terrorists have consistently confessed similar motivations, whether it be the Times Square bomber or the Fort Hood shooter. Time and time again, the terrorists give the same explanations: they attack the United States because the United States is attacking Muslims. With the Boston Marathon bombings, once again Americans repeat Bushian explanations. The vapid radio personality Adam Carolla explained: They hate our culture. They hate our way of life. Why Americans simply can't fathom that it is U.S. foreign policy that motivates terrorists is understandable: it would be too difficult on the American psyche to admit fault--to admit that our own foreign policy is criminal and the source of the legitimate grievance. It is far easier to lay the blame on another religion. So, once again, we are told that the Boston Marathon bombers were "motivated by religion." This is what "anonymous U.S. officials" told the media, who then unthinkingly regurgitated it: Two U.S. officials say preliminary evidence from an interrogation suggests the suspects in the Boston Marathon attack were motivated by their religious views but were apparently not tied to any Islamic terrorist groups. The two brothers, from southern Russia, practiced Islam. The U.S. officials spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation. Notice that the U.S. officials "were not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation"--but they discussed it with reporters anyways. This is typical of the U.S. government-media relationship: journalists grant anonymity to government officials, who can then freely spread their propaganda while at the same time hiding behind the wall of anonymity when challenged. ( Glenn Greenwald has written extensively on this practice.) And so, Americans will continue to believe the myth that the terrorists attack us simply because of their religious views. This successfully shrouds the real underlying reason: U.S. foreign policy. "Muslim rage" toward the United States has to do with the fact that the United States has been continuously bombing, invading, and occupying multiple Muslim countries. This is a process that began in the early 1990's--over two decades of U.S. warmongering in the region. (And actually, U.S. interference in the Middle East begins way before that.) The Tsaernev brothers may well have been becoming more religious. But, that's only half the story--and it's the half that's less important. The more important half is what the government and media isn't telling. The Tsaernev brothers were ethnically Chechen. As has been pointed out by many in the media, Chechens don't necessarily have a particularly antagonistic view towards the United States. Why should they? Their "beef" is with the Russians. However, the Tsaernev brothers were becoming more religious. As such, it is only natural that their affiliation and self-identity became closer tied to Muslim. Once they started identifying themselves more as Muslims, they naturally grew closer in affiliation to the Muslim community worldwide (the Ummah). This sensitized them to conflicts in the Muslim majority world, including the U.S.-led incursions in the region. Therefore, the turn to religion did facilitate their eventual commission of the terrorist attacks, but only because it caused them to identify with the people who are being attacked by the United States. It is true that the Koran commands believers to come to the defense of other Muslims: And why should you not fight in God's cause when defenseless men, women, and children are being oppressed and cry out, "Lord, rescue us from this land whose people are oppressors! By Your Grace, give us a protector and give us a helper." (Koran, 4:75) But, is this not a universal moral principle? Few people, aside from extreme pacifists, would argue that it is immoral to defend "defenseless men, women, and children who are being oppressed." That the Tsaernev brothers would respond to this call means that they identify the United States as the oppressor. It is less that the religion itself caused the Tsaernev brothers to plan these attacks, and more the fact that the U.S. is bombing, invading, and occupying Muslim lands. If this weren't the case, the Tsaernev brothers would hardly have identified the U.S. with the oppressors mentioned in the Koranic verse. Islam does advocate fighting oppressors to save the oppressed, but this is hardly something immoral. Rather, it would be immoral to deny the right of the oppressed to defend themselves against the oppressors. Where the Tsaernev brothers left the Koranic injunctions and Islamic tradition was in their targeting of civilians instead of military targets. The Koran declares: Fight in God's cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression, for surely, God does not love aggressors. (Koran, 2:190) The Prophet Muhammad is said to have explicitly forbidden the targeting of non-combatants, specifically women and children. Islamic extremists like the Tsaernev brothers are not following the Koran or Islamic teachings when they commit acts of terrorism against innocents. Rather, they areflouting long-held Islamic prohibitions against targeting non-combatants. The extremists justify this departure from Koranic and Islamic law by claiming that the times are so exigent that an emergency suspension of this prohibition must be declared, i.e. the only way to stop them from killing our civilians is by killing theirs. This twisted logic is the same used by many in the West to justify nuclear warfare. Other Muslims counter the Islamic extremists by invoking Koranic and Islamic injunction, declaring such suspension of the religious law to be religiously baseless. So, it is misleading to say that the Tsaernev brothers were motivated by religion and just leave it at that. Islamic extremists like the Tsaernev brothers follow the Koranic injunction to come to the defense of the innocents (at least in their minds that's what they are doing), but they suspend and flout the religious laws regarding the conduct of such defensive war. In other words, they uphold (part of) the Islamic jus ad bellum (right to wage war) but refuse to follow the Islamic jus in bello (conduct of war). It is thus important to remember that: (1) the right to wage war that these Islamic extremists invoke is rooted in not just Koranic scripture, but is part of universal moral principles (and is enshrined in the Just War Theory). (2) The U.S.'s actions, not religious scripture (since, as discussed in point #1, it is a shared universal moral principle), are the ultimate cause of inspiration for terrorists. If, for example, the Koran still existed but the U.S. hadn't been continuously bombing, invading, and occupying Muslim lands, it is very unlikely that the Islamic extremists would have selected the U.S. to target. (As Osama bin Laden asked, "Why did we not attack Sweden?") On the other hand, if the Koran and Islam never existed, the people in the Muslim world would still seek to defend themselves against U.S. aggression, the only difference being that their resistance would be colored in national or ethnic instead of religious colors. (One could reasonably argue that religious motivation instills greater fanaticism to resistance movements, but nonetheless, people of any or no religion would seek to defend themselves against invaders.) (3) The Tsaernev brothers may have been motivated by religion, but they ignored that same religion when it came to the conduct of war, which reinforces point #2: resistance is colored by religion only, but really it is a universal human desire to fight back against invaders. Of course, it's more reassuring to Americans to think that these terrorists keep attacking us because of their religion. It's far easier to point the finger at some other extrinsic cause rather than at oneself. This makes us feel good about ourselves: we are the good guys being attacked by the bad guys. It's hard to accept that the pan-ultimate motivator for why they attack us is our own actions in their lands: bombing, invading, and occupying them for over two decades. One could argue that I don't know for certain that U.S. foreign policy is the ultimate motivator for the Tsaernev brothers because this information has yet to be released, but it's a matter of such obviousness--and it has been proven over and over again once the motivations of previous Muslim terrorists were revealed--that I say it with utmost certainty. It's a simple answer to the question "why do they attack us", as opposed to the simplistic answer that they hate us for our freedoms or because of their religion. The Boston Globe declared: " It doesn't matter why they hate us, they just do ." Be it fanaticism for Islam, or coffee and cakes. I believe in freedom of choice and decision, based on CORRECT education and information. But in the recent few decades we have seen a surge of Islamic radicalization. This has not been limited to the middle east. Even in progressive western and eastern countries, Islamic youth (immigrants or born citizens) take the path towards extremism. Why is this happening? What happened to the vision of global unification and a governance of logic and science with the advent of the information age? Let me first quantify my own position on this topic. I grew up in a multi cultural society believing in secularism (and I still do), and hating the idea of profiling. I also believed every religion was there for the betterment of mankind, and the quintessential message was the same. But around 8 years ago, my thought process changed. My father was too close to a train wherein Islamists had planted explosives. He escaped unhurt, but several thousand others were not so lucky. I researched, and found whatever I had been taught as a kid in school was a lie. Islam with its elements can be very easily interpreted to be a tribal religion, espousing a centrist ruling clan, while subjugating or eliminating (latter is preferred) all non-believers and having a particularly virulent attitude towards woman's rights. Note: I say :"Interpreted". In spite of all the malice I felt towards this ideology, my education, family values of tolerance and peaceful co-existence refused to overwhelm me in a sea of hate, and I sought to truly understand this menace of Islamic fundamentalism. For as the saying goes, "Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one!" - Friedrich Nietzsche. Every religion is at the core of humanity's problems. When an individual is too weak or too cowardly to fight by the sword, he fights with a perverted idea. I have studied a few religions and fake "political" movements (Khmer rouge, Nazis, Maoism) in depth, the central theme remains, "Your misery is not your fault, <inset name of race/religion/ethnicity> are the true cause of your misery. And only we and our ideology are the path to your salvation!" And demagogues have understood the value and espoused these ideas to rally the masses around these to serve their purpose. These days, we read rather surprising statistics, 50% of Moslems around the world were opposed to the "World trade center bombings in NY city". And only 7% are truely radicalized. (Source: Gallup Poll world wide). Hold on there... 7% of 1.6 billion Moslems world wide is 7x10^(-2) x 1.6x10^(9) = 11.2x10^(7) = 112 million moslems. In comparison, the population of the UK is 62.6 million. So the number of radical moslems (by conservative estimates in a poll conducted by a Moslem working for Gallup Islamic studies), is twice the population of the UK? The statistics are skewed, and if you review the true information, the number of radicalized moslems is 37%. If you think your neighborhood or your town has none of these radicals, then you are living in a fool's paradise. So why is this happening? How come the numbers are such incredible and how come our civilized society is turning a blind eye to it? We have long since believed in the central villainous figure, be it Dr. Lex Luthor against Superman or The Joker against the Batman. Eliminate the head, and the body dies off, is an oft repeated paradigm we have heard. But what if the enemy does not have a single head? What if it is a hydra with a thousand heads, all hidden deep within murky waters, which we can not fathom? We have long since sought to find the "solution" in the wrong places, taking the war to Afghanistan, promoting "Arab Spring" in the middle east. How well has that served us? Afghanistan is about as close to democracy and normalcy as my German Shepherd is to eating with a fork and knife and chewing with his mouth shut when offered a big piece of raw chicken with a juicy joint. And we cannot think of a greater debacle as the Arab Spring presents us today. Powerful pro western Arab nations have been radicalized to the extreme, and we continue to fund and arm aspiring Mullahs in further nations. So where is the money coming from? Where is the motivation coming from? While there is no central evil figure spinning his web while stroking a furry white persian cat, with a monocle on his eye, there is definitely a conglomerate which sponsors this. And you should not be surprised to know that some members of this conglomerate are people from Western countries, powerful heads of corporations and political parties. The stripping of Iraq provided a neat little profit to these sharks, and what could serve them further than a similar stripping of Egypt or other middle eastern countries. Let the radicals take power, and then find a reason to invade "For preserving freedom" ... and voila! Done! And of course you have the Saudis and Qataris, who finance and seek to control the debt and financial benefits arising from these conflicts. And on the other end of the spectrum you have the clerics. And these are the grass root campaigners who are fostering the Islamic radicalization in every society. A mullah or a cleric, has aspirations of political power. Islam has very strong political aspirations. And his power base is guaranteed. Look at Turkey, a seemingly westernized Moslem nation, standing at the fore front of the Islamic world as its model of modernity and tolerance. And every time you visit, you receive a piece of virulent propaganda from your local religious leader, who your family and elders teach you to respect. And imagine a Friday congregation, wherein you are surrounded by hot heads, all listening to a caustic litany of hate, propaganda and lies, which plays to your emotions and sensibilities. You are urged to embrace your true calling and sacrifice your life for the "people". Now we can see where the suicide bombers are coming from. So whats the solution? Forcible conversion to a different religion is not the answer, you do not jump from the frying pan to a boiling fire. But what can truly help, is a control and education system for the clerics. Impose a government supervised training system for the Mullahs. You want to be a religious leader? Get a bachelor's degree in religion from a state approved university with a curriculum which teaches you to understand the messages of a "holy book" vs. taking them literally. Impose laws which focus on true integration of people in to host country's values and sensibilities. 7th century propaganda from a nomadic desert bandit's life cannot serve as the blue print of life in the 21st century world. Implement a system of monitoring at these religious meets. Lets face it, placing the TSA at airport check points violates a lot of innocents, place these jokers in the mosques to check for radical elements and propaganda. I am willing to bet, the number of "home grown" terror aspirants would soon be nullified to zero. And we can actually get on a plane without having our kids going through a groping session by a pedophile wearing a federal uniform. The Palestinians broke off direct peace talks after Israel launched a military offensive on Gaza in late 2008. In May 2010 due to shuttle diplomacy of Obama's Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, leaders of the Palestine Liberation Organization gave their backing to indirect peace talks with Israel. After a PLO Executive Committee meeting Abbas said that the decision to restart the negotiations was based on guarantees and assurances he received regarding the settlement activities and the necessity to halt them and that the US will take a decisive position toward any provocations that influence the path of negotiations. Knowing from past bitter experiences, the Palestinian ruling Islamist group, Hamas, which now controls only the Gaza Strip, had urged the PLO to reject the proximity talks. "We warn the executive of PLO not to take any decision to resume talks with the enemy and to give cover to the Israeli occupation to commit more crimes against our people," a statement said. As a tactic, Israel welcomed the Palestinian endorsement of indirect talks purely for formality sake while actually they do not intent to have any peace talks or vacate the Palestine lands unless they are forced by UNSC-NATO terror organizations. Obama who, unlike his rhetoric, is anxious to delay any terror action over Iran until after the presidential elections in November. USA is not at all keen to attack Iran for its energy resources. But how long? I approached them more than once requesting them to take away the terror noise from front side of my room but they flatly refused and asked me to keep cotton in my ears. Even cotton is helpless because they keep increasing the volume to a mad level. When I pleaded to reduce the volume of the menace they increased the volume to showcase their monkey power. I told them that I would approach police for help but their reply was very cold as if local police is in their own custody. They are damn sure they have the support of "important" fanatics leaders . It is really sad that the Hindutva moorings have now reached such a level that the temple people can do anything even in Muslim streets. People today have many other forms of entertainment and loud speakers are a serious menace especially in streets where people from other religions and those seek peace and communal harmony also live. The old practice of loud speaker culture has no relevance today when every house has TV sets, computers , tape recorders, videos , etc and loud speaker noise has no meaning at all.
