Russia Today:
"One of Europe's most peaceful capitals, Stockholm, is witnessing its worst outbreak of violence in years. Hundreds of youths, mostly immigrants, have ripped through the city's suburbs in four nights of unrest. The violence has shocked the country, famous for its attractive immigration policies and generous welfare system."

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/22/us-sweden-riots-idUSBRE94L0RG20130522

"We've had around 30 cars set on fire last night, fires that we connect to youth gangs and criminals ," said Kjell Lindgren.

Some 15 percent of the population are foreign-born, and unemployment among these stands at 16 percent, compared with 6 percent for native Swedes, according to OECD data.
Out of a total 103,000 immigrants last year, 43,900 were asylum seekers, almost 50 percent up from 2011 . Nearly half of these were refugees from fighting in Syria, Afghanistan or Somalia, and will get at least temporary residency.

Among 44 industrialized countries, Sweden ranks fourth in the absolute number of asylum seekers.

Djalaie said youths were often stopped by police in the streets for unnecessary identity checks. During the riots, he said some police called local youths "apes" .

The Few, the Proud, the Tortoises

U.S. Marines are taught to overcome obstacles with a minimum of help. But when some Marines prepared to charge a hill in a training exercise here a few months ago, they were forced to halt and radio the one man who could help them advance: Brian Henen, turtle expert. The troops were "running up the hill and firing at targets," Mr. Henen said. "Some of the tortoises like the hill also. The Marines don't want to hurt the tortoise, so they call us and we go in and move it."

Mr. Henen, who has a doctorate in biology, is part of a little-known army of biologists and other scientists who manage the Mojave desert tortoise and about 420 other threatened and endangered species on about 28 million acres of federally managed military land.

"There's a lot of people who don't recognize the amount of conservation the Marine Corps does," said Martin Husung, a natural-resource specialist on the base. "A lot of people think we're just running over things."

Instead, Mr. Henen often hustles out to remote parts of the Mojave Desert to make sure the threatened desert tortoise, which can weigh 10 pounds and live to be more than 50 years old, isn't frightened by charging troops.

"When they get scared, they pee themselves," Mr. Henen said, referring to the tortoises. Since tortoises can go two years between drinks of water, an unplanned micturition can cause dehydration and even death. So Mr. Henen sometimes demonstrates to troops how he soaks the reptiles in a pool until they drink enough water to plod on with their lives.

CloseDesert tortoise

The tortoise isn't the only animal benefiting from the limited hunting, high security and trained biologists on many bases. On the Navy's San Clemente Island, biologists protect vulnerable loggerhead shrikes from hungry rats by installing metal "rat flashings" at the base of trees the birds nest in. In Texas, the Army creates protective nesting environments for endangered golden-cheeked warblers to fend off incursions by brown-headed cowbirds. And at Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee, the once-endangered Helianthus eggertii , or Eggert's sunflower, is doing so well it has been taken off the endangered list.

Congress ordered the Defense Department to protect the flora and fauna on its lands under the 1960 Sikes Act. Today, the military works with agencies like the Fish and Wildlife Service, a bureau of the Interior Department, to search for and protect animals, plants and archaeological sites on its bases.

At Fort Benning, an Army base near Columbus, Ga., gunfire and explosions regularly set off fires in the pine trees, said John Brent, the base environmental manager. Oddly enough, this is a boon for the red-cockaded woodpecker, a bird on the endangered species list that has made a comeback there.

The finicky woodpecker typically lives in longleaf pines at least 60 years old. The tree thrives on forest fires. "It needs fire to germinate and grow," Mr. Brent said.

USMCA conservation poster

Outside the base, civilian agencies have long tried to prevent forest fires, and that ultimately hurts the pine population. Elsewhere, forest lands are disappearing amid rapid development.

All of this has the birds flocking to the base, Mr. Brent said. To help welcome the new tenants, Mr. Brent and others have been building bird "condominiums," Mr. Brent said. For this they cut a hole about the size of a loaf of bread in an existing tree and slide in a cedar box to accommodate a nest. They can only do this once per tree because these picky birds prefer "condos, not townhouses," Mr. Brent said.

"It's a well-kept secret" that biologists are drawn to work on military bases, Mr. Brent said. "There's a chance to do terrific work."

Last year, the Department of Defense spent nearly $70 million on threatened and endangered species management and conservation, including $16.5 million on the red-cockaded woodpecker and just under $6 million on the desert tortoise.

A sign at the Marine base at Twentynine Palms warns about tortoises.

The outlays let biologists survey habitats, tag and track animals, build hatcheries and provide ecological training to thousands of troops.

At Fort Irwin, an Army base near Barstow, Calif., Clarence Everly bumped along a dirt trail in a Dodge Ram pickup. The former Airborne Ranger is now the natural and cultural resources manager on base.

"Having been in the Army, it gives you some street cred" dealing with soldiers and the chain of command, he said. "You're not just the environmentalist guy trying to prevent them from doing training."

He drove out to meet a team of biologists from the U.S. Geological Survey on a 10-acre restricted area where lonely Joshua trees shook in 50 mile per hour winds.

This "is a great resource," said Christina Aiello, a USGS scientist and Ph.D. student from Penn State University, trying to yell over the gusts of wind. "Blocking off areas, restricting access, it's safe and secure and there's no public access."She is part of a team doing research on how tortoises interact socially. She said their research is "like Facebook" as they track friend circles in the tortoise group.

Back at Twentynine Palms, Ken Nagy, a professor emeritus in biology from UCLA studying the reproductive habits of the reptiles, held a baby tortoise in one hand, its shell still soft.

They are like "walking ravioli" to predators, he said. A fenced-off section of the base covered by netting helps overcome the high mortality rate for young tortoises in the wild. Mr. Nagy's program helps protect juveniles from birds and allows for research in a natural habitat.

Other parts of the military's domain aren't exactly natural but still offer the animals military-style protection.

On Fort Irwin, Mr. Everly peered through the window of his pickup at some targets in the distance-home to a surprisingly large tortoise population. "In essence, the live-fire ranges are protection for the tortoises," he said, looking at a patch of ground where bullets often rain down but rarely hit the burrowing reptile. "Nobody goes out there."

Two years ago the U.S. Navy SEALS adopted the Mk25 9mm pistol as their standard sidearm. This pistol was actually the same Sig Sauer P226 the SEALS have been using since the 1980s, but with a better accessory rail, a few other minor changes, and a new name. The P226 was adopted by the SEALS in place of the Berretta M9, which was adopted by the rest of the U.S. military in the 1980s, to replace the M1911 .45 (11.4mm) pistol. The Berretta and Sig Sauer pistols had both scored about the same on the American evaluation tests and the Berretta won mainly on the basis of price. The SEALS, belonging to SOCOM were allowed to buy whatever weapons they felt best got the job done and the SEALS have been using the P226/Mk25 ever since. The 9mm pistols are carried by SOCOM (Special Operations Command) operators as a defensive weapon. When they need pistol for offensive use they generally prefer a .45 caliber weapon. In the 1990s SOCOM adopted the Heckler and Koch (HK) Mk 23 SOCOM for offensive operations. This is a 1.47 kg (3.2 pound) .45 pistol with a 12-round magazine and the ability to carry a suppressor. It is expensive, at $2,400 each. Loaded with a suppressor and laser aiming device the Mk23 weighs 2.29 kg (5 pounds). The Mk23 is a precision weapon, capable of accurate fire at 50 meters (51mm/two inch shot groups). The lighter and cheaper USP Tactical version of the Mk23 was later introduced for personal protection and other duties not requiring the heavier Mk 23. The M9 and Mk25 are two-thirds the weight of the Mk23 and carry 15 9mm rounds.

Horsemeat scandal: Dutch trader Willy Selten arrested

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-22639020

It was reported that 50,000 tonnes of meat sold as beef by Mr Selten may have contained horsemeat

A Dutch meat wholesaler, Willy Selten, has been arrested for allegedly selling 300 tonnes of horsemeat as beef, officials say.

Mr Selten, who owns meat wholesaler Willy Selten BV, was arrested with the company's interim director.

The public prosecutor said they were suspected of false accounting and fraud.

In April, it was reported that 50,000 tonnes of meat sold as beef by Mr Selten may have contained horsemeat.

The Dutch food safety authority, the NVWA, asked hundreds of
companies across Europe supplied by Mr Selten to check their products.
"The business allegedly received 300 tonnes of horsemeat from
the Netherlands, England and Ireland in 2011 and 2012," the
prosecutor's statement said.
The company's accounts showed this horsemeat was processed as beef, according to the statement.

The EU is set to adopt legislation to tackle food fraud.

The accounts did not say where the meat came from or where it went to.

Speaking on Dutch TV on Wednesday night, Mr Selten said the allegations made no sense and denied criminal activity.

"We never stuck labels on something that wasn't beef."

Mr Selten's company was declared bankrupt in April.

The horsemeat scare began in Ireland in January, rapidly spreading to the UK, France, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.

The EU is set to adopt an Animal and Plant Health legislative
proposal in the coming weeks, which includes clauses designed to tackle
food fraud.

Opening an umbrella inside a plane isn't just bad luck... it's a punishable crime!

With all the temperature and humidity regulators at work on a commercial aircraft, it's not uncommon for a little condensation and leakage to happen from time to time.

The dripping itself isn't a big deal but when you're strapped in a chair next to a sleeping 300-lb man, the annoyance factor gets amplified. As captured in this photo aboard a Cathay Pacific flight, one man decided to deal with it by pulling out his trusty umbrella.

However, surprisingly, the act of opening a parasol mid-flight is a violation of Hong Kong aviation regulations and could land this man in prison .

According to the Civil Aviation Department, if a passenger opens an umbrella mid-flight it has an impact on the orderly operation of the aircraft. It is also possible the man violated some "unruly behavior" related regulations including not complying with crew instructions.

Police are reported to be investigating the incident and will determine whether to go forward with charges. If the violations amount to a summary offense then he could face a HK$10,000 (US$1,300) fine and/or six months in prison. If his offenses are serious enough to be an indictable offense he can be penalized by a maximum HK$50,000 ($6,500) and/or two years in prison.

So, if you ever feel a little dripping while flying the friendly skies, Cathay would like to remind you to leave the umbrella in your bag and ask a flight attendant to take care of it, as shown in the photo.

Are We Better off Now Than We Were Four Years Ago? A question has been put forward that has the Obama administration struggling to answer. "Are we better off now than we were four years ago?" What seems like a simple question that is asked of any politician seeking re-election seems to be a stumbling block for President Obama and his campaign. Over the next few months the campaign will try to craft and spin an answer to that question while ignoring the reality. Here are just a few of the facts that should not be overlooked.

Afghan Mullah Marries, Kills 8-Year-Old Girl on Wedding Night

The 8-years-old girl whose story you'll read in coming lines did not make it to the 2nd night of her wedding nor did she make it to her 9th or 10th birthday.

Her name unknown, my source telephoned me last week at 9:30 pm to tell me her story. At the first I thought it's just going to be a short conversation but later it was unveiled that the story is different.
The story came from a village in Khashrood district of Nimruz province in Afghanistan. A medical doctor assigned in the main hospital in Zaranj city, the capital of the province, who wished to remain unnamed confirmed that he was "made aware" of the incident and that it was "too late to do anything for her" as well the "remote area didn't allow them to do anything".

The girl was one of the several daughters of a man in his late 30s. For an unknown reason he gave his daughter to the Mullah of their village for a big amount of money. It is also common in Afghanistan's rural areas or 3rd level provinces/cities to marry young girls to old men, and trading their daughters for their debts or other items. The mullah is in his late 50s and is the mosque guy of the village where this incident happened. The mullah is already married and has many children too.

The two families hold a tribal meeting, agree on the price that the groom's family pay to the bride's family, and they set a date for wedding. In rural areas like this here there are no engagements or any ceremonies beforehand like there are some in the metropolitan and urban areas. The two families planned a wedding party, the wedding and Nekah (The religious process in which a woman is officially married to a man) took place and the 8-years-old bride became the 50-years-old Mullah's 2nd wife.

The celebration party was over and the sun downed - the time to have sex (not make love) with the 8-year-old bride. Naturally, she started to bleed in a very bad amount, but the mullah was too annoyed for not being able to have sex with her, to care for what he did or her bleeding or her wounds that he gave her. The girl had her scarf stuffed in her mouth, crying and trying to not raise her voice because others were there in the room adjacent to or outside. The girl was bleeding and there was nobody to help her, neither could the Mullah ask for help as it was a shame for him. Our 8-year-old bride bled and went into traumatic shock from blood loss and early in the morning around 5 when the sun was about to rise, she passed away. The close friend of mullah, who knew everything, was very upset and shared the story with my source that then called me and told me the story.

This story reached to me was told the exact way as it happened by the Mullah to a very close friend of him after the girl's dead body was buried. According to the Mullah, he had a "bad conscience" about it.

Amnesty International: Report Slams European Asylum Policies

Millions are fleeing from war and violence, but Europe is sealing itself off to those in need, a new report from Amnesty International alleged on Thursday. The human rights organization urged EU countries to act and save lives.

The numbers are shocking. Between 800,000 and 1.1 million people were killed in 131 civil wars around the world last year. The Syrian rebellion alone claimed some 60,000 lives by the end of 2012. Since then, the United Nations has raised its estimates to nearly 80,000 victims.

According to human rights organization Amnesty International, the situation in Syria has escalated dramatically in recent months. Yet European Union countries have welcomed only 40,000 refugees from the war-torn country -- a fact that Amnesty harshly criticizes in its annual assessment of global human rights abuses, released late on Wednesday.

"The EU is holding back on this issue," said Selmin Caliskan, the general secretary for the organization in Germany, at a press presentation of the report on Wednesday. Germany and other European nations must offer generous support to the countries surrounding Syria that are taking in refugees, she added.

The "restrictive" asylum and refugee policies of the EU, which collectively won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2012, have been "unworthy" of such an honor, the German branch of the organization said. Not only have border controls become even tougher, but Europe has sealed itself off, Caliskan said, adding that this must change. "The EU has so far taken on no responsibility for the refugees, which is why so many people die in the Mediterranean Sea," she said.

In fact, the European Union is using border control measures "that put the lives of migrants and asylum-seekers at risk and fail to guarantee the safety of those fleeing conflict and persecution," a press release said.

Amnesty also pilloried EU member Hungary for making controversial changes to its constitution that limit human rights. Soon, "insulting the honor of the Hungarian nation" will also be a crime there, and Europe must try to stop such policies, the organization urged. Furthermore, Germany must end the deportation of asylum seekers to Hungary, where they face human rights abuses, the organization said.

Activists in Danger

The list of countries that violated human rights in 2012 is long. Having analyzed 159 countries for the report, Amnesty concluded that 12 states abused and tortured people, while security forces in more than 50 countries were responsible for illegal killings. Some 21 governments had people executed, while unfair trials took place in 80 countries. Non-violent political prisoners were held in 57 countries, and 101 states suppressed free speech.

Meanwhile, human rights activists around the globe are in danger because of their work. Among the best-known cases from 2012 was that of 15-year-old Pakistani student Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban in retaliation for her education and women's rights activism in October. Though her prognosis was grim, Yousafzai survived.

Russia also garnered fierce criticism from Amnesty for its actions against foreign non-governmental agencies (NGOs). After parliament there ruled last year that any political organizations with funding from abroad must register as "foreign agents," a number of foreign NGOs were raided in March, including Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a political think tank aligned with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union party, and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), the think tank of the center-left Social Democratic Party.

Ethiopia, Egypt and Uganda were also cited for having stifled civil engagement in 2012.

A Bit of Good News

The news wasn't all bad, though. Amnesty reported progress in some places, such as Malaysia and Singapore, countries that began taking steps to end the death penalty. The US state of Connecticut, which banned the death penalty in April, was also singled out.

Another positive development included the approval of a historic global arms treaty in the United Nations General Assembly by the 155 countries. Only Iran, Syria and North Korea voted against the treaty, which aims to regulate the international trade of weapons.

"Our demand is that where there is a substantial risk that these weapons will be used to commit violations of international humanitarian law or serious violations of human rights law -- the transfer should be prohibited," wrote Salil Shetty, the organization's secretary general, in an essay accompanying the report.
