<description>A Defence satellite was successfully launched in Kazakhstan on the 25th
March 2012 which will improve communications abilities for Australian
Defence Force personnel operating in the Middle East.

The launch of the IS-22 satellite was managed by Intelsat - an
international satellite service provider.

The purchase of the Ultra High Frequency communications payload which
forms part of the satellite means Australia will now have its own
dedicated Defence Ultra High Frequency satellite communications network
in the Indian Ocean Region .

The Ultra High Frequency or UHF band is widely used for military
satellite communications because of its adaptability to small, mobile
terminals used by ground, sea and air forces.

<description>The Chief of Army, Lieutenant General David Morrison announced the
raising of the newest unit in the Australian Army, the Special
Operations Engineer Regiment (SOER). The announcement coincided with a
ceremony held at Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney. The Incident Response
Regiment (IRR) was taken off the Army's Order of Battle and replaced by
the newly named SOER. The new unit reflects the distinct roles and
capabilities of the SOER, which differ from those of conventional
Engineer units, whilst still retaining ties to the Corps of Royal
Australian Engineers. The SOER provided two separate practical
capability demonstrations at Holsworthy, a Chemical, Biological,
Radiological, Nuclear or Explosive (CBRNE) neutralisation task and an
Improvised Explosive Device (IED) clearance. The Special Operations
Commander Australia, Major General Gus Gilmore also took the opportunity
to meet the soldiers of the SOER to personally thank them for their
work in supporting operations both domestically and overseas, and paid
tribute to their fallen comrades.

<description>Australian soldiers at Tallil in Southern Iraq ceased operations on 1st June and handed over security responsibility for Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar provinces to U.S. forces.

Diggers from Combat Team Waler patrolled up until the last moment, completing a two-day security mission, before driving up to a parade to signal the end of operations.

Commanding Office of Overwatch Battle Group (West) -- 4, LtCol Chris Websdane said the soldiers' work was now done. &quot; You should be proud of the part you have played in bringing peace and prosperity to the people of Dhi Qar and Al Muthanna,&quot; he said.

Senior Australian and Coalition commanders, and Iraqi leaders, welcomed the patrol and thanked the soldiers of Overwatch Battle Group (West) -- 4 and the Australian Army Training Team -- Iraq 9 for their contribution to the stable security environment in the two provinces.

Commander of Australian Operations in the Middle East, MajGen Mike Hindmarsh said the arrival of the final patrol was &quot;the end of another chapter in Australia's proud military history.&quot; He also thanked the Training Team for its efforts in training 33,000 members of the Iraqi Security Forces over it's nine rotations.

The Governor of Dhi Qar province, Aziz Kadum Alwan Ogheli, thanked the Australians for their contribution, highlighting their reconstruction and security efforts.

Later in the day Diggers lowered the Australian national flag and officially transferred authority for operations in Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar to the soldiers of the U.S. 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

During the transfer ceremony, the Commander of Multi National Corp -- Iraq, LtGen Lloyd J. Austin III, said Australian soldiers had achieved much since 2005. &quot; In that time you have contributed immensely to the area.

&quot;(You have) been instrumental in establishing self-sustaining governance and security in Al Muthana and improving the security situation in Dhi Qar and in the continued development of the Iraqi Security Forces,&quot; he added.

During the course of operations in Southern Iraq successive Battle Groups completed approximately 8700 patrols, traveling more than three million kilometers and completed more than 250 reconstruction projects in Dhi Qar and Al Muthana.

The return of Australian personnel and equipment to Australia is well advanced and will be completed, as planned, by mid-year.

New combat uniform makes troops job easier
19 November 2010

All Australian troops operating 'outside the wire' in Afghanistan will don the new 'Multicam' combat uniform following positive feedback from a Special Forces trial.

Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare announced the extension of the trial today during his address to the biannual Land Warfare Conference in Brisbane.

The Multicam combat uniform is a different camouflage pattern to the current Australian combat uniform and is also worn by US troops in Afghanistan.

Mr Clare said the feedback from Special Forces troops has been extremely positive.

&quot;Special Forces soldiers have said this is the uniform they want to wear,&quot; Mr Clare said.

&quot; The camouflage pattern provides troops with greater levels of concealment across the range of terrains in Afghanistan - urban, desert and green.

&quot;It also makes it easier for our troops to do their job.&quot;

The Multicam shirt and trousers have elbow and knee pads built in to reduce soft tissue injuries; are cooler and designed to be worn under body armour; have a padded waist band to make it more comfortable under webbing or a field pack; and have more pockets and a stretch fabric at the joints.

Mr Clare said Defence has made an urgent order from the United States to get these uniforms to troops in Afghanistan as quickly as possible.

&quot;I have also instructed the Defence Materiel Organisation to pursue the purchase of a licence to provide for the potential manufacture of this uniform in Australia if the extended trial is successful,&quot; Mr Clare said.
