In the end, he concluded no single word sufficed. Chutzpah, he wrote was "that quality enshrined in a man who, having killed his mother and father, throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an orphan."If Rosten were around today, he might offer another definition: a country that sends a spy to steal millions of pages of national-security secrets from its best friend in the world and then demands his release as a sign of friendship. That's exactly what happened last month when President Obama visited Israel, only to be berated over the imprisonment of Tel Aviv's self-described "master spy," Jonathan Pollard.Pollard has been in jail since 1985, when he was arrested for using his job as a U.S. Navy intelligence analyst to plunder enough classified documents to fill a 6-foot-by-10-foot room, which he sold to Israel for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sentenced to life in prison, he's scheduled for parole in November 2015, after completing 30 years of his term.Pressure on Obama Both Israeli president Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are believed to have demanded Pollard's release in private meetings with Obama. Members of the Knesset were so open about their intentions to rough Obama up on the subject of Pollard that the president declined an offer to speak there.Deprived of a chance to shout at Obama face to face, Knesset member Danny Danon instead took to the pages of USA Today, where his op-ed piece called Pollard's jailing "an historic wrong" and added: "If President Obama plans on asking the Israeli people to trust him during what promises to be a tumultuous four years, bringing Jonathan home would be a just and noble way to do so."Putting aside the fact that a lot of Americans might reasonably expect they've already earned some trust by giving Israel $3 billion a year (nearly half the U.S. budget for foreign military aid), the clamor for Pollard's release begs the question: Why are the Israelis insisting that the future of relations with the United States rests on the immediate release of a convicted spy who is just 19 months from possible parole? The answer is that Israeli officials don't want Pollard released because he's served his time. They want him released because they think he didn't do anything wrong and they want Washington to publicly admit it. And they think this is an opportune moment to press their demand because Obama is politically weak and might hope to score points with a wavering constituency, American Jews.But releasing Pollard would be a giant mistake for the president. Pollard is neither a naive kid who blundered into trouble for unthinkingly passing a harmless secret or two to an ally, nor an innocent Jewish victim persecuted by an insidious network of anti-Semites within the U.S. government. He is, rather, a mercenary who looted U.S. national security for personal gain.Israel was the biggest beneficiary of Pollard's perfidy. He stole so many documents - delivering up to five suitcases-full at a time to his control officer - that the Israelis had to buy a condo and equip it with a high-speed copying machine just to handle the take. The Israelis in return paid him $2,500 a month (well over his U.S. government take-home pay), lavished him with jewelry and European vacations, and set up a Swiss bank account to hold a $300,000 bonus.And still Pollard wanted more. He tried to sell American secrets to Pakistan, Australia and South Africa's apartheid regime. He stole classified documents on China to help his wife land a big public-relations contract with China.Profitable proposition If spying was quite profitable for Pollard, it was no bargain for American taxpayers. It cost many millions of dollars to replace the intelligence systems he compromised, including a blueprint for U.S. electronic interceptions around the world. Pollard's disclosures enabled Israeli missions that the United States would never have agreed to support, like a 1985 bombing raid on a PLO headquarters in Tunisia that killed scores of innocent bystanders. And much of the material Pollard stole (including information on how the United States tracked Soviet submarines) wound up in Moscow - perhaps because the KGB pilfered it from Israel, perhaps because the Israelis swapped it for Jewish emigrants from Russia.It is inconceivable that any American president would stamp these actions with approval by granting early release to the man who carried them out. Levy explained his refusal by saying that he saw no need to intervene because only two months remained until the law expired. However, at the end of the two months, the law was extended by a year, and now they want to extend it for yet another year.The government's decision last week to extend the validity of the Citizenship Law (Temporary Order), for another year, is evidence that the legal barriers preventing severe discrimination against Israel's Arab citizens and harm to their civil rights have been removed. Had Levy known that the law's limited validity was nothing but a deception aimed at preparing a discriminatory and unconstitutional law, there is no doubt he would have joined the five justices' majority opinion that it was unconstitutional and should be removed. We must hope that the High Court of Justice, when it rules on the new petition submitted against the law after it was extended in 2006, will take into account that the term "temporary provision," which both the government and Knesset take pains to stress, is a deception. We are talking about, in effect, a permanent law. The law stipulates that the interior minister does not have the authority to approve residence in Israel for a resident of Judea and Samaria (unless, of course, they are Jews - that is, settlers). This is so even regarding family reunions, meaning marriage, when it comes to Palestinian spouses who are younger than 35 (for men) or 25 (for women). In effect, the law prevents young Israeli citizens from marrying the spouse of their choice and living with this spouse in Israel, if the spouse is a Palestinian from Judea and Samaria. It is obvious that this has barely any effect on the right of young Israeli Jews to live in their country with the spouse of their choice, because there are hardly any marriages between Israeli Jews and Palestinians from Judea and Samaria. On the other hand, these Palestinians constitute Israeli Arabs' natural pool for choosing a spouse. For this reason, the law severely discriminates when comparing the rights of young Israeli Jewish citizens and young Israeli Arab citizens. When the law was first passed in 2003, supposedly as a temporary one-year measure, it was accompanied by security reasoning - the risk of implanting terrorists in Israel via marriage. The reasoning was faulty even at that time: Every Palestinian who wishes to enter Israel must be addressed individually. It is the Shin Bet security service's task to do this and thus carry out its mission - protecting the security of Israel's citizens such that the country remains democratic, with equal rights for all. The claim that there are characteristics of an apartheid state in Israel is widely heard in the Western world. The word apartheid is catchy and understood in many parts of the world, which makes it useful to send a message that we resent and which we claim has no connection with reality in Israel. However, we do not need to replicate exactly the characteristics of South African apartheid within discriminatory practices in civil rights in Israel in order to call Israel an apartheid state. The amendment to the Citizenship Law is exactly such a practice, and it is best that we not try to evade the truth: Its existence in our law books turns Israel into an apartheid state. The government decided to add the Gaza Strip to the list of countries for which the interior minister does not have the prerogative to approve residence in Israel on the grounds of family reunions, regardless of age. Both the list and the new addition are superfluous and harmful. He is an exceptional case, having survived for more than 40 years, despite doctors giving him just two years to live when first diagnosed. Stone is associate professor of Arabic and head of the Arabic Programme at City University. Lebanese political science professor Asaad Abu Khalil described Stone via Facebook as a "model academic and a man who has dealt with Arabs and their causes with extreme respect, sensitivity, and support." Stone is a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause and writes frequently against Zionism, Khalil added. The directive, issued last week, comes after around 30 Ethiopian Jews who had emigrated to Israel said they had been told that they would not be allowed into the country without receiving the contraceptive drug. Within Israel, Ethiopian Jews make up the majority of those given the drug, according to a report published in 2010 by Isha le'Isha, a women's rights organization; 57 percent of women who had received the drug in Israel are Ethiopian Jews, although they account for less than 2 percent of the overall population. "We believe it is a method of reducing the number of births in a community that is Black," Hedva Eyal, the author of the report, told Israeli media. "It is indeed the first time that the state actually acknowledged that this procedure of injecting immigrant women with this drug, when they do not know the side effects and are given no other choice, is wrong." The directive was issued less than two weeks after a group of organizations representing the Jewish Ethiopian community, along with the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), sent a letter to Gamzo asking that this practice be stopped immediately and that an investigation be started into it both in Israel and in the transit camps in Ethiopia. Israel's Ministry of Health deputy spokesperson Smadar Shazo told reporters that while the directive was issued after the letter from the organizations, the ministry had begun investigating the matter a few months ago in an attempt to determine who was behind this policy in both Israel and the transit camps in Ethiopia. "We started the research after an article in one of the dailies reported a steep decline in the number of babies born in the Ethiopian community, which is a young, supposedly fertile community," said Eyal. Over 120,000 Jews of Ethiopian descent live in Israel today; 83,000 of them were born in Ethiopia. Between 1985 and 1991, more than 30,000 were airlifted in three rescue operations after years of civil war and famine had driven hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians into the capital, Addis Ababa, and refugee camps in Sudan. But their integration into Israeli society has not been easy; about 52 percent of Ethiopian-Israeli families live below the poverty line, compared to 16 percent among the general Jewish Israeli population, they are also forced to convert to Ashkenazi Jewish practices and encouraged to discontinue the Ethiopian Judaic traditions of their religion. A report on the 'promised land' May 2013 May Introduction Ten years ago the General Assembly received the report Theology of Land and Covenant, from the Board of World Mission, Church and Nation Committee and the Panel on Doctrine.1 This report concluded with encouragement for us to listen more to others, "enriched by new insights through continuing questions that need to be faced". Since 2003, two new insights have been noted by the General Assembly: in 2007, in the report What Hope for the Middle East?2 the Church of Scotland responded to a declaration from Church leaders in Jerusalem, and endorsed their criticism of Christian Zionism and encouraged members of the Church of Scotland to reject it, and in 2009 Christians in the Holy Land came together and produced Kairos Palestine: a moment of truth, offered as a word of faith, hope and love from the heart of Palestinian Suffering3 (information at http://www.kairospalestine.ps). With the co-operation and support of the World Mission Council, we present this report in 2013 as our latest reflection on the 'questions that need to be faced', as the political and humanitarian situation in the Holy Land continues to be a source of pain and concern for us all. The Bible and the land of Israel There has been a widespread assumption by many Christians as well as many Jewish people that the Bible supports an essentially Jewish state of Israel. This raises an increasing number of difficulties and current Israeli policies regarding the Palestinians have sharpened this questioning. This assumption of biblical support is based on views of promises about land in the Hebrew Bible.4 These views are disputed. The guidance in the Bible, notably the interpretation in the New Testament, provides more help in responding to questions about land and covenant. It also provides insight (discussed later in the report) into how Christians might understand the occupation of Palestinian land by the state of Israel, threats to Middle East peace and security, human rights, and racial intolerance, especially in the forms of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. The phrase "the land of Israel" has a range of understandings amongst the three world faiths, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The city of Jerusalem, which is a holy place for all three religions, is the most contentious religious and political issue. In general terms there have been three main ways of understanding the promises about land in the Bible: 1. A territorial guarantee 2. A land held in trust 3. A land with a universal mission. 1. A territorial guarantee This idea presents scripture as making unconditional, literal promises referring to a specific, identifiable territorial area for the Israelites.
