Rural council votes to stop flying flag of St George claiming it is offensive to town's 16 Muslims because of links to CRUSADES

:Ban by Radstock Town Council in Somerset after councillor's proposal
:Labour's Eleanor Jackson insisted flag could still cause Muslims upset
:Instead a Union Jack and the LGBT flag will be flown at certain times
:Bristol Muslim Cultural Society: 'It's political correctness going too far'

Members of a rural town council were today branded 'stupid' for voting to stop flying the flag of St George because of its links to the Crusades - claiming it is offensive to Muslims.

The ban on the red and white emblem was imposed in Radstock, Somerset, which has a population of 5,620 - including just 16 Muslim residents, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Labour councillor Eleanor Jackson insisted it could still cause upset to Muslims - and officials agreed with her proposal not to buy a new St George's flag for the town's repaired civic flagpole.

The university lecturer said: 'My big problem is that it is offensive to some Muslims, but even more so that it has been hijacked by the far right. My thoughts are we ought to drop it for 20 years.'

Instead, a Union Jack will be flown on Armistice Day - and the rainbow flag of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride movement - at 'appropriate' times of the year.

The council will also be flying the In Bloom flag at the Miners' Memorial Garden to celebrate the town's gardening achievements - and there are plans for a specially-designed flag for Radstock.

Residents of Radstock criticised the council's decision. Pensioner Irene Burchell, 76, said: 'The council does not speak for the people of Radstock, and certainly does not speak for me.

'I think it is absolute nonsense. The St George's flag has been adopted by England for centuries. We are the only ones who never celebrate April 23 the way other people celebrate their national day.

'The only people who will be left using the flag will be football hooligans and this plays into that.'

Jenny Fisher, 70, added: 'I don't think Muslims would be offended by it. Why would they? They live here. It's stupid.'

But Radstock Town Council chairman Lesley Mansell said: 'We do not have a Union Jack and the discussion was mainly about purchasing one to fly mainly for Armistice Day.
'The list we saw at council included a number of other flags which councils are allowed to display - which includes those for the patron saints for England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

'The council confirmed its original decision to purchase a Union Jack, to fly the In Bloom one and the rainbow flag at appropriate times. We are working on a new logo and when that is sorted we hope to have our own flag for Radstock.'

But John Clements, vice-president of patriotic group the Royal Society of St George, condemned the council's decision as 'nonsense'.

He said it was the 'censoring' of Britain's national flag which played into the hands of the far right.

Muslim Council of Britain spokesman Nasima Begum said her group encouraged the flying of the St George's flag.

She said: 'St George needs to take his rightful place as a national symbol of inclusivity rather than a symbol of hatred. St George actually lived before the birth of Islam and should not be associated with any hatred of Muslims.'

And Rizwan Ahmed of the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society said: 'It is political correctness going a bit too far. Use by the far right is one thing, but to say that Muslims are offended I don't think is correct

.

'I think if anything this will harm understanding of Muslim people, and it feeds into the ideas that some people have of "Oh, here they go again, pandering to the needs of Muslim people", when actually it is not offensive.

'We understand the flag is part of this country's heritage, and in fact many, many Muslims will identify as being British themselves.

'I can see why they have done this, but it really is too far. They are being overly sensitive, and making assumptions about what Muslims will be offended by.

'In actual fact we are normal people. We have a sense of humour and have the same concerns as everyone else - we are not just some single group.'

There is no mosque or prayer centre in Radstock, meaning the few members of the Muslim community are forced to go to Bristol or nearby Bath in order to pray.

70th anniversary of the Dam Busters raid at Bomber Command in Nanton Alberta

VOLUME may be an issue while engines are running.

One of the most daring and tactically demanding air operations in history,
the legendary Dambusters Raid utilized a bouncing bomb
released at an altitude of sixty feet to destroy enemy hydroelectric dams.
A brilliant tactical success was achieved
but eight of the nineteen Lancaster bombers did not return.

Of the 133 airmen who flew on the raid, 53 were killed and three became Prisoners of War.
Of the thirty Canadians who flew, only fifteen returned safely to base.

This is some footage from the 70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Dam Buster's raid. Being a relative of Guy Gibson's navigator I got prime seating. Woohoo, glory for no achievement.

One video is of a Bristol Hercules engine, and the other two are of the partially restored Avro Lancaster in limited operation (you may notice two of the engines are non-functional and missing their propellers). The Lancaster's engines were run twice. During the runs, family of the Dam Busters were invited inside the Lancaster. For the first run I hung out inside and for the second I took a front row seat outside.

For all you mechanical, aviation and WWII enthusiasts, enjoy!

UK , Protest , USA , Agriculture An international protest planned for later this month against biotechnology company Monsanto is slated to span six continents and include demonstrations in dozens of countries around the globe.

Amid growing concerns over St. Louis, Missouri-based Monsanto and the impact the company is having on agriculture, activists have planned rallies for later this month in 36 countries.

Monsanto, a titan of the emerging biotech industry, has come under attack from environmentalists, agriculturalists and average consumers over the company's conduct in the realm of genetically-modified organisms and genetically-engineered foods. Despite research on the effects of GMO crops being largely considered inconclusive, Monsanto has lobbied hard in Washington and around the globe to be able to continue manufacturing lab-made foods without the oversight that many have demanded.

In March, Congress passed a biotech rider dubbed the "Monsanto Protection Act" by its critics that essentially allows that company and others that use GMOs to plant and sell genetically-altered products without gaining federal permission.

" The provision would strip federal courts of the authority to halt the sale and planting of an illegal, potentially hazardous GE crop while the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) assesses those potential hazards ," dozens of food businesses and retailers wrote Congress before the bill was passed.

Reuters / Gary Cameron

In the weeks since the rider was approved within an annual agriculture spending bill, anti-Monsanto sentiment has only increased. The international day of protest scheduled for May 25 is now looking at becoming one for the record books, and even a number of celebrities have lent their star power to help raise awareness of the movement.

" Here in America you don't get the right to know whether you're eating genetically modified organisms ," award-winning music performer Dave Matthews says in a video for the march that has been uploaded to the Web. Comedian Bill Maher and actor Danny DeVito also appeared in the clip to plead with people around the world to rally against GMO companies.

But even as the anti-Monsanto movement increases in intensity, the company itself continues to generate record-setting profits. In April the company announced a 22 percent increase in net profits, and representatives for the companies said they expect to see that trend continue.

" So our bottom line business outlook today means the momentum that we anticipated in our first quarter has clearly carried through into even stronger business results for the second quarter ," CEO Hugh Grant told analysts and reporters during a phone call last month.

AFP Photo / Pedro Pardo

Earlier this year, Grant told the Wall Street Journal that despite an international backlash, venues around the world have been unable to link to his company with any concrete health risks caused by their products.

"They're the most-tested food product that the world has ever seen. Europe set up its own Food Standards Agency, which has now spent EUR300 million ($403.7 million), and has concluded that these technologies are safe ," Grant said in January. " France determined there's no safety issue on a corn line we submitted there. So there's always a great deal of political noise and turmoil. If you strip that back and you get to the science, the science is very strong around these technologies ."

But despite those claims, anti-Monsanto actions are expected to continue as planned around the world - and in those very countries. Four demonstrations are scheduled for Britain, including events in London and Bristol, and two separate events are scheduled for May 25 in Paris. In the US, demos are planned in 48 of the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia.

by KERRY PICKET 7 May 2013, 11:18 AM PDT
A source with intimate information about the events that happened on the ground in Benghazi the night the U.S. Consulate and the CIA annex was attacked by terrorists told Breitbart News that, ultimately, only the President of the United States, or someone acting on his authority, could have prevented Special Forces either on the ground or nearby from helping those Americans who were under deadly assault.According to the source, when the attack on the Consulate occurred, a specific chain of command to gain verbal permission to move special-forces in must have occurred. SOCAFRICA commander Lieutenant Col. Gibson would have contacted a desk officer at the time, asking for that permission.

That desk officer would have called Marine Corps Col. George Bristol , then in command of Joint Special Operations Task Force-Trans Sahara. From there, Bristol would have made contact with Rear Admiral Brian Losey , then Commander of Special Operations Command Africa. Losey would have contacted four-star General Carter Ham , commander of U.S. AFRICOM at the time.

"Ham answers directly to the President of the United States," said the source. It wasn't a low-level bureaucrat making the call, the source adamantly added.

That call may have been made early in the engagement. Both Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey testified in January that they had no further communication with President Barack Obama after an initial briefing in the early hours of the Benghazi crisis, which continued through the night.

But what about then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?

"I have a hard time thinking it was Hillary alone. Hillary may have tried to circumvent the counterterrorism board and deal with this. I think in order for her to tell General Ham, 'No, you're not going to get involved,' she would have had to talk to the president. The president would have had to say, 'No, take your commands from Hillary.' He would have had said something, because Ham does not work for the Department of State; he works directly for the president," the source explained.

The lack of clarity surrounding orders given during the Benghazi attacks is a stark contrast to the clarity projected after the successful Osama bin Laden raid in May 2011, when administration officials were keen to attribute responsibility for the orders to the president.

Witnesses with firsthand information about the Benghazi attacks will appear before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.

State Department employees Mark Thompson, Gregory Hicks, and Eric Nordstrom are expected to be whistleblower witnesses who will reveal information about State's reaction to the attacks that has not been released previously.

AWR Hawkins contributed to this report.

RICK PERRY ROLLS OUT WELCOME MAT TO CT GUN MANUFACTURERS AT NRA CONVENTION

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) met with Mark Malkowski, owner of Stag Arms of New Britain, Connecticut, who was in Houston for the NRA convention. The two met to discuss a possible move to Texas for the firearm manufacturer. The Hartford Courant reports that Malkowski, 35, said he briefly toured a number of possible locations, though his decision to leave Connecticut is still under consideration. Malkowski employs 200 people, and his father also owns a machining firm in New Britain.

"There are some intense meetings going on between the owner of Stag Arms and Rick Perry, the Governor of Texas at the NRA show in Houston," Stag posted on its Facebook page.

"It was refreshing," Malkowski said. "The approach, the climate out there is very friendly--industry friendly and business friendly. It doesn't even compare, their governor vs. ours when it comes to our industry."

Executives from gun manufacturers PTR of Bristol, O.F. Mossberg and Sons of North Haven, and Colt of West Hartford also attended NRA's annual meeting and convention. All of the companies make rifles that are now banned for sale in Connecticut. In the case of Stag, its entire product line is now illegal to buy in Connecticut.

Nevertheless, Stag Arms now has an eight-month backlog of orders.

Regarding the Texas welcome, Malkowski said, "They were very welcoming and very encouraging to us to consider their state and it wasn't politicians and economic development officials... it was regular people."

Perry has also reached out to Ammunition Storage Components, which manufactures bullet magazines in New Britain. Jonathan Scalise, owner of ASC, said that his company has 17 different offers to relocate.

Connecticut's new gun control law permits manufacturing to continue, but the manufacturers are concerned that if they remain in the state, their products will be boycotted because of the state's retail sales ban on military-style firearms.

In addition, Connecticut gun manufacturers are not happy about comments made by Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) during an April interview with Candy Crowley of CNN:

What this is about is the ability of the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible, even if they're deranged, even if they're mentally ill, even if they have a criminal record. They don't care. They want to sell guns.

The head of O.F. Mossberg took the Connecticut governor's remarks as slanderous to the entire firearm manufacturing industry, as well as the people employed by the companies.

The Mossberg executive wrote, "...your comments came across as insulting and slanderous to our employees and to our industry, and appear to be politically motivated..."

"If I've insulted anybody it's the NRA," Malloy responded . "It's for good reason."

Based on several polls he claims show that a large majority of Americans support universal background checks for gun buyers, Malloy said, "You have an organization that is being funded by manufacturers that is basically telling the American people to go fish. These are folks who will not support universal background checks and anybody who supports that organization is in essence creating a monster."

Author's note: My name is Mathew Cole and I'm an officer with the Sullivan County Sheriffs Office, Blountville, Tenn. I joined the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office in 2008 and became a member of the SCSO patrol K-9 Unit in 2010. My K-9 partner, Diablo, is certified in patrol and narcotic detection through the USPCA.

Just before midnight on February 3, 2013, officers received a report of a disturbance between two brothers at a home in Blountville, Tenn. Upon arrival, the victim told officers his brother was intoxicated and had become upset over something he said. The suspect, identified as Aaron Hooker, had already left the home before officers arrived. Dispatch informed officers that Hooker had three outstanding warrants for felony vandalism, a parole violation and failure to appear on aggravated burglary charges.

Officers received information that Hooker could be at Apache Drive in Blountville. Officers spoke with a female at the home who told them that Hooker was hiding downstairs, possibly in a bedroom or a crawl space. Officers went downstairs and gave several verbal commands to the suspect telling him to come out. The suspect didn't respond.

At that point, Officer Matt Cole released his K-9 partner Diablo into the crawl space underneath the home. K-9 Diablo located and apprehended the suspect. But instead of surrendering, Hooker proceeded to punch Diablo, who once again apprehended the suspect. The suspect again fought Diablo, causing him to have to apprehend Hooker for a third time. Diablo held the suspect until Officer Cole could get to the suspect and gain compliance. Aaron Hooker was then placed into handcuffs and taken into custody for the active arrest warrants.

While escorting Hooker outside he spit blood and saliva into Officer Cole's face. As a result, Hooker has been charged with assault on an officer. He was transported to the Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment. Upon release from the hospital, Hooker will be transported to the Sullivan County Correctional Facility.

The death of a man doused in petrol who burst into flames when a police officer zapped him with a TASER is to be examined by watchdogs. The Independent Police Complaints Commission will look into the circumstances of the death to determine what specifically caused the burns and why the Taser was fired.

Andrew Pimlott, 32, suffered fatal burns in the horror in Honicknowle, Plymouth, on April 18.

He was taken to Derriford Hospital and later transferred to the specialist burns unit at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, but died there five days later.

Two officers from Devon and Cornwall Police attended the address after receiving reports Mr Pimlott was in the garden with a can of flammable liquid.

Shortly after they arrived, he sustained serious burn injuries and an ambulance had to be called.

IPCC Commissioner Sarah Green said: "Our investigation will be looking at what information was known to the officers attending the scene, the officer's rationale for discharging a Taser on a person known to be doused in flammable liquid, whether the discharge of the Taser caused the fuel to ignite and we will look at training and policies."

A post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday. Further forensic analysis will be carried out.

Paying tribute in a statement, Mr Pimlott's parents wrote: "You were a fantastic son to us, you will always be in our hearts and thoughts.

A man who had doused himself in petrol turned into a human fireball when police shot him with a Taser.

Andrew Pimlott, 32, suffered horrific injuries in the confrontation outside
his house and died in a hospital burns unit five days later. The
50,000-volt volley was fired after he threatened to kill himself while
holding a canister of fuel in one hand and a naked flame in the other.
Jack
Fry, who saw the incident, said: 'There were three screams. Then we saw
a man, fully on fire, from top to bottom, like you see on a film, with
his arms swaying around.'We saw two police officers appear from the side of the house. One of them jumped on the burning man and put him on the floor.

'The officers were shouting to each other and the one who had put him to the
ground got an old duvet or cover and started smacking the man with it.'The
incident - the latest to raise serious questions about the increasing
use of Taser weapons - is being investigated by the Independent Police
Complaints Commission.Sophie
Khan, a lawyer who specialises in representing Taser victims, said the
death was deeply saddening. 'Police Taser policy clearly states that
using one where there is flammable liquid is prohibited,' she added.
We do not know the facts but it is
possible this tragedy could have been avoided if the officers had
followed standard procedure.'It is another incident which
highlights potentially inappropriate use of Taser which is growing as a
weapon of choice among British police forces.'
Officers have been warned not to use Taser weapons on people who have been sprayed with CS gas, because some brands catch fire.

The confrontation took place outside Mr Pimlott's home in the Plymouth suburb of Honicknowle on April 18.

Responding to an emergency call about a domestic incident, two officers found Mr
Pimlott in the back garden with the canister. He had poured some fuel
over his body.

Within moments of the Taser being
fired he burst into flames, suffering serious injuries, including the
loss of an ear. He was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and
transferred to a specialist unit at the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol
where he died four days ago. It is not known whether the two officers
involved remain on duty.Mr
Fry, a 20-year-old shop worker, said the pair were 'heroes' for jumping
on Mr Pimlott with blankets in a bid to put out the flames.'There
was steam coming off him and he was groaning. The sight was sickening,'
he added. 'The officers then got a hosepipe and poured on water. We
heard more sirens and as the paramedics and fire crews arrived I went
back inside. I want to say how amazing the officer was. I think this
officer is, well, I would use the word hero.'Another neighbour said: 'I thought a bomb had gone off. It was a sound like a shot or a bomb. Then I heard a howling noise.'

Mr Pimlott, who lived with his parents, Kelvin, 61, and Jean, 63, was
known to police after being jailed last December for attacking an
officer. The incident followed Mr Pimlott's father calling police
because his son was drunk and aggressive.Mr Pimlott, who was jailed for eight weeks, referred to himself as being 'like Jekyll and Hyde' when drunk.

Devon and Cornwall is one of the
country's most controversial Taser forces. It used the stun gun 65 times
in 2011 compared with 34 times in 2010.Last year it paid out up to lb5,000 in compensation to a man who was Tasered at close range in a packed Plymouth pub.

In a statement last night, Mr Pimlott's parents said: 'Dear darling son
Andrew, you were a fantastic son to us, you will always be in our hearts
and thoughts. We will never forget you.'
