That was the public line from the White House in the closing weeks of a presidential election season, but it was not the view of several State Department officials at the time or the U.S. personnel on the ground in Libya. At a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Benghazi Wednesday, Trey Goudy, a Republican from South Carolina, read into the record an email from Beth Jones, the acting assistant secretary of state for Near East Affairs. The September 12 email-disclosed for the first time on Wednesday-said Jones had spoken to Libya's ambassador to Washington who said the attack was the work of former Gadhafi regime loyalists. Jones said she told the ambassador: "The group that conducted the attacks, Ansar al-Sharia, is affiliated with Islamic terrorists." Jones was not the only one who viewed the attack as the work of terrorists. Gregory Hicks, the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Tripoli at the time, said there were no reports from U.S. personnel in Libya there was a demonstration. In often-dramatic testimony, Hicks provided new details of the attack in the evening of Benghazi. He said he had no doubt the assault on the U.S. compound in Benghazi at the time was a terrorist attack, noting that Ansar al-Sharia had claimed credit for the assault on its twitter feed. Indeed, the U.S. embassy in Tripoli believed it would be attacked next. His response after her death from a stroke earlier today, was met with disgust by many users on the social networking site. When one user wrote that the MP was 'unbecoming' in his choice of phrase, the 59-year-old fired back 'You're obviously a teenage scribbler then? Or one with no memory.' His responses was one of many controversial reactions from cheers at an NUS National conference in Sheffield to when news of her death was announced to a Labour councillor posting a bottle of wine on Twitter. It is thought the MP was referring to an Elvis Costello 1989 song in which the singer vows to dance on Thatcher's grave. The provincial government has sided with an Australian gold miner over a Nova Scotia Christmas tree grower. Natural Resources Minister Charlie Parker announced Friday that he has issued a seldom-used vesting order that will allow DDV Gold Ltd., a subsidiary of Australia-based Atlantic Gold, to expropriate 14 parcels of land in the Moose River Gold Mines area for an open pit mine. The 14 hectares encompassed by those parcels include 3.3 hectares owned by Higgins Family Christmas Trees, a long-time local business. The Higgins family have repeatedly told DDV that they didn't want to sell, even for the $300,000 which the company is reportedly offering for the land. "This is exactly what we hoped the government wouldn't do," said Cleve Higgins, whose father Forrest owns the business. "This sets a dangerous precedent. It says to Nova Scotia landowners that a mining company can just come along and take away your land because it wants to." The Higgins family has retained Halifax lawyer Robert Pineo to seek a judicial review into the decision. If successful, said Higgins, they would then apply for an injunction halting the expropriation. Wally Bucknell, executive director at Atlantic Gold, says the family is playing politics by trying to build a groundswell of opposition against a project that will bring much-needed jobs to the Musquodobit Valley. "I understand a man's land is his right and we're not happy about this," Bucknell said in an interview. "But we see the benefit for the common good." He added: "If we didn't get this land we would have packed up and gone home." In a press release, Parker said that he weighed a number of factors in OK'ing the expropriation. Ultimately, the release indicated, it came down to a question of the private interests of the landowners versus "the substantial public interest" in seeing the development of a mine that could create about 150 jobs while in operation and 300 jobs during the construction phase. "This was a difficult decision to make, and while it may not be to everyone's liking, I am confident that it best serves the public interest," Parker said. The deposit at Moose River Gold Mines contains about 635,000 ounces of gold with a current worth of $700 million. The project is expected to produce about 90,000 ounces of gold per year for five to seven years. The company has said that it needs the Higgins land, which has been in the family for more than 120 years, for the project to be feasible. The Higgins family says the land, on which they say that they grow trees and store equipment, is critical to the operation of their business. "They knew from the beginning that it wasn't for sale," said Higgins. "They went ahead anyway assuming that they would get the appropriation all along." Bucknell, however, says the company is holding out to make a point, not because it actually needs the land to grow Christmas trees. "We're done deals with 29 people in Moose River and everyone is happy," he said. Parker's decision was lauded by the Mining Association of Nova Scotia, which said it shows "support for the mining and quarrying sector" and that development of the mine will mean "growth in the local economy and rural employment." But the government's decision had its critics, including local MLA Gary Burrill, a New Democrat backbencher and United Church minister. "This is a decision that I regret," said Burrill, who represents Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley. He said expropriations are usually for a public good, like getting land for a road. He said there's a public good in this case with the promise of jobs, but he doesn't see that as the primary good. "The primary good here is the private good of an international gold mining company, so in my view, the vesting order expropriation process is not the way to go," he said. After the cars stop, the video shows that as Roy gets out of his car, his cruiser slowly begins to roll forward and picks up speed until his cruiser rear-ends the stopped car. The accident caused very minor damage. But the motorist, Susan Fay, had been headed to her chiropractic appointment for treatment for her longtime serious back injuries. She sued Colchester. She claimed the collision made her back problems much worse. This week the case went to jury trial. She was seeking nearly a $1 million from the town of Colchester in compensation and damages. She declined comment for our story but the trial was recorded by the court. "After the car accident, the pain continued to, it changed and it increased over some time," Fay testified. "It feels very different like there's actually a knife going in right here. I can't describe it. It's burning. It's deep. And it's really knife-like." Fay produced doctors and medical bills to support her claims. Colchester produced one medical expert who disagreed. After five hours of deliberation the jury decided Colchester should pay Fay $340,000. "My original thought was I was wondering why this going to trial at all? It seemed to be a fairly minor incident," said Lee Carpenter, one of the jurors. Carpenter says the deliberations were heated because the juror opinions ranged from a million dollars to zero. In the end they struck the $340,000 compromise. Carpenter said, "As the evidence was presented, there was a lot of evidence brought forward that should that there was damage done to this woman after the fact of the accident." A small accident that produced an unusually big jury award for the state of Vermont. Calls to Colchester town officials for comment were not returned. The town's insurance carrier, not the taxpayers, is responsible for paying the award. Nikki Brewer, 18, was pulled back by the hair by the drunken thug and punched so hard she was thrown into the air as she returned home from a night out in Colchester, Essex. Her attacker verbally abused the young woman and spat at her before calmly walking away. Yet despite the violence being caught on CCTV, the 31-year-old man who was arrested afterwards was never charged because of a loophole that puts a time limit on making a prosecution. Ms Brewer, who now works for the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre in Colchester, suffered life-changing injuries after the incident and has been left with constant back pain. She often has to resort to a wheelchair to get around because she tires so easily. The charity worker has also been diagnosed with a degenerative disease that affects her nerves, which doctors have said can be brought on by a trauma injury. 'It is so frustrating and the law is silly,' she said. 'What was the point in making an arrest if there was no chance of prosecution? 'When I first complained to police, nothing happened and now I have run out of time to get justice.' Ms Brewer was attacked on the high street in April 2009. Footage of the attack was featured in an episode of Crime Watch and has been viewed on YouTube by tens of thousands of people. But after a series of delays to proceedings, police were forced to release the suspect without charge. Both Essex CPS and the police denied responsibility for the failure to prosecute. He was initially arrested on suspicion of common assault because police did not realise how serious Ms Brewer's injuries were. An Essex Police spokesman said the force then decided to take an advice file for actual bodily harm assault to the county's Crown Prosecution Service. He continued: 'The CPS said there was insufficient evidence for an ABH charge and only enough for one of common assault - but by the time we got to this point, it was too late to proceed with a prosecution for common assault.' There is a six-month limit to make a charge for common law offences. If the man had been arrested on suspicion of ABH instead, there would not have been a limit. But in another confusing twist, the CPS claim they never even saw a file from the police, and merely gave advice on the matter. 'Nothing was ever logged in our system, so unless the police can give a date that this happened and person who it was handed to, we have no evidence this happened,' said a CPS spokeswoman. 'They would know the law on the time limit, so they could have decided not to submit anything at all.' Ms Brewer - now 21 - said she has been left feeling let down by the justice system. She added: 'It has been so frustrating to have to go through it all again only for nothing to come of it. 'Before this happened, I had never had back pain and I now spend a lot of time at pain clinics trying to help.' Doctors have diagnosed her with defective degenerative disc and multi-level facet hypertrophy, which means her enlarged joints are now pushing on her nerves, leaving her in agony. Langoo took a picture of the meal and uploaded it to Facebook, where it has been shared hundreds of times. He also went online to complain directly to the company. The company apologised to Langoo and has offered him KFC vouchers. Analysts with KFC said they believe the photograph was of a chicken kidney. Langoo told the Sun: "I have a habit of picking the chicken off the bone with my fingers and as I pulled the second piece apart, I saw this horrible wrinkled foreign body. "I threw it down on to my tray immediately. It looked like a brain. I suddenly felt grim and really sick. I couldn't bring myself to pick the lump up so I went to the serving counter to complain. "It was about 1pm and pretty hectic in the restaurant and as it was so busy none of the staff helped me. I was grossed out by the fact that I could so easily have eaten it without realising. "I just wanted to get out of KFC as quickly as I could." A company spokesman said: 'We always try to ensure the highest standards in all of our restaurants.
