FORTVILLE, Ind. - Fortville Officer Matthew Fox is recovering in the hospital from a gunshot wound after police say 27-year-old James Lockhart fired several shots at him.

Indianapolis Police Department released dashboard video that shows it all started with a routine traffic stop.

Fox pulled Lockhart over for a busted tail light. The video shows Lockhart sitting in the car.

&quot;Put your hands out the window,&quot; said Fox to Lockhart in the dashboard video.

After several warnings, Lockhart pressed on the gas and started a high speed chase. Fox followed Lockhart for several blocks.

Suddenly, the 27-year-old suspects got out of his white Volvo and without flinching fired several shots directly at Fox as he sat in his squad car.

It appears in the video that Lockhart fires about 12 shots in a span of 16 seconds.

He then retreated back to his Volvo and he sped away. The only sounds that can be heard after the shooting are the sirens from Fox's squad car.

Moments later sounds indicate Fox is still alive.

&quot;Help, help, help,&quot; said Fox as he tried to gather himself. A officer arrived a few minutes later. He reassured the Fortville officer that help was on the way.

While crews were rushing to Fox's side, police say Lockhart sped home to grab more guns and ammunition. He then reached 8000 block of Fox Rd.

Police say he drove inside the The Grand Reserve Geist apartment complex.

Lockhart then tried to leave the complex by crashing into other squad cars. He fired several shots at officers who returned fire and killed the 27- year-old.

Fox has been taken to a local hospital and he is in good condition.</description>
