The 1953 Worcester Tornado was an extremely strong tornado that struck the city and surrounding area of Worcester, Massachusetts on June 9, 1953. It was part of the Flint-Worcester tornado outbreak sequence, which occurred over a three-day period from June 6-9, 1953. The storm stayed on the ground for nearly 90 minutes, traveling 48 miles across Central Massachusetts. In total, 94 people were killed, making it the 21st deadliest tornado in the history of the United States. In addition to the fatalities, over 1,000 people were injured and 4,000 buildings were damaged. The tornado caused $52 million in damage, which translates to $349 million today when adjusted for currency inflation. After the Fujita scale was developed in 1971, the storm was classified as F4, the second highest rating on the scale.

At approximately 4:25 pm EST, the tornado touched down in a forest near the town of Petersham, and proceeded to move through Barre, where two people were killed. It then moved through the western suburbs of Worcester, where 11 more people were killed. The storm then passed through Worcester, where it destroyed Assumption College and several other buildings, killing 60. After striking Worcester, it killed 21 more people in the towns of Shrewsbury, Southborough, and Westborough, before dissipating over Framingham. According to National Weather Service estimates, over 10,000 people were left homeless as a result of the tornado.

 Buildup to storm

On June 7, 1953, an area of high pressure developed over much of the Northern United States. This high-pressure air mass collided with a low pressure mass that was centered over Nebraska, creating favorable conditions for severe thunderstorm development. This collision of systems spawned several tornadoes in the states of Michigan, Ohio, and Nebraska, most notably the Flint-Beecher tornado on June 8. The storm killed 118 people in the towns of Flint and Beecher, and injured 844. In addition, seven other tornadoes across the region caused 52 more injuries and nine more fatalities. After the use of the Fujita scale began, the Flint-Beecher tornado was rated an F5. The air mass continued to sit over the region throughout that night, further contributing to the outbreak.

Overnight, the cold air mass, along with a cold front, moved eastward into New York and the New England area. In the days before the storm, the New England region was experiencing significant heat, with a high culminating at 90 ^0F on June 6. However, the cold air mass, an unusually strong one, lowered temperatures across the region. The temperature in Worcester dropped over 15 degrees to 74 ^0F on June 8. The presence of the air mass created the chance for warm air from the Southern United States to clash with the cold front. This phenomenon, which is the way most tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are formed, is something that would not normally happen in the New England region.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Boston believed that there was a possibility for tornadic activity in the area, but decided not to include it in their forecast for the day in fear that they would cause panic among local citizens. 1953 was the first year that tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were used, so forecasters compromised and issued the first severe thunderstorm watch in the history of Massachusetts. Because of this, the tornado struck with little to no warning for residents.

 Tornado event

Rain fell across Worcester County throughout the day on June 9. In New York, a strong cluster of thunderstorms began to build, moving eastward into Massachusetts. At approximately 4:25 pm EST, a funnel cloud formed near the Quabbin Reservoir near New Salem. Very soon after, a tornado spawned from the funnel cloud, touching down in a forest outside of the rural community of Petersham. The tornado then proceeded to pass through a farm field, where it struck a farmhouse and killed two people. As the storm moved eastward at approximately 35 mph, it hit the towns of Rutland and Holden, where 11 people were killed in total.

At about 5:00 pm, the tornado moved into the city of Worcester, alarming many residents. According to eyewitness accounts, the storm moved in extremely quickly, shocking the townsfolk. "I saw it grow noticeably darker," said eyewitness George Carlson, "Then it hit. Houses tumbled, trees fell, and it was all over. The tornado was definitely discernible. Like when you can see the lines of rain in an approaching rainstorm," he added. The tornado, which had grown to a mile wide, destroyed several structures in Northern Worcester, including parts of Assumption College Other major structures included a newly-built factory and a large residential development. Residential areas were devastated, where entire rows of homes swept away at possible F5 intensity.

The funnel maintained its 1-mile width as it passed throughout much of Shrewsbury, and still did a high amount of damage when it moved through downtown Westborough, where it began curving towards the northeast in its final leg. In the storm's final moments, 3 were killed when Fayville Post Office in Southborough collapsed. Around the time it ended 5:45 pm, a tornado warning was issued, although by then it was too late.

FRAMINGHAM - A Framingham teenager fought with officers Tuesday as they tried to prevent him from swallowing a bag of what appeared to be cocaine, police said.

Art Taylor, 18, swallowed the small bag but was arrested on several other charges after police pulled him over on Union Avenue at 8:35 p.m., police spokesman Lt. Ron Brandolini said.

Members of the street crimes unit patrolling Franklin Street saw a car turn onto Pearl Street without signaling. They stopped the car on nearby Union Avenue, but when they spoke to Taylor, he refused to give them his license or registration, Brandolini said.

"He made a quick movement to the center console, and there was small baggie with a white powder in it," Brandolini said. "He immediately made a movement to put it in his mouth."

An officer tried to stop him, but Taylor kept pushing his arm away. The officers dragged Taylor from the car, and he started fighting with them in the middle of the road.

By the time officers handcuffed him, Taylor had swallowed the bag, Brandolini said.

Police used a dog to search the car for other drugs, but nothing was found.

Taylor, of 624 Hollis St., was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and refusing to give police his license and registration. He was also cited for not using a turn signal.

Taylor pleaded not guilty at his Framingham District Court arraignment yesterday and was released without bail. He is due back in court Jan. 6 for a pretrial conference.

FRAMINGHAM (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston) - SKYFOX captured video of a suspect leading state police on a high-speed chase westbound on the Massachusetts Turnpike after a trooper tried to pull him over in Boston.

State police say 29-year-old Alejandro Serra of Framingham is the suspect involved in the chase which ended with a crash and Serra in custody.

According to police, the chase began after a man flagged down a state trooper claiming Serra tried to run him and his grandson over. When the trooper tried to pull Serra over he took off and got on the Pike.

Three state police cruisers boxed the suspect's car in and then nudged it into the Jersey barriers in the center of the highway, forcing it to crash.

The suspect then got out of the car and lay on the ground as nine state troopers held him down and took him into custody.

The chase and accident caused a long traffic backup before the highway reopened just before 1 p.m.

State police said one trooper was hurt.

20 Facts About Hunger In America That Will Blow Your Mind

All over America there are millions of people that will be missing meals and going hungry this holiday season. Even as much of the country indulges in the yearly ritual of unbridled consumerism that we refer to as "the holiday season", more families in the United States than ever before will be dealing with not having enough food to eat. Food stamp use is at an all-time high. Demand at food banks is at an all-time high. They keep telling us that we are in an "economic recovery" and yet the middle class continues to shrink and the number of Americans living in poverty just continues to grow. We are witnessing unprecedented hunger in America, and this especially seems tragic during the holidays. Much of the country is partying as if the good times will never stop, but families that are living from one meal to the next are facing a completely different reality. How do you tell your children that there isn't going to be any food to eat for dinner? How do you explain to them that other families have plenty to eat but you don't? Sadly, many food banks are overstretched at this point. All over the nation, food pantries have actually had to turn people away because of the overwhelming demand. And more Americans used food stamps to buy their Thanksgiving dinners this year than ever before. This is a problem that is not going away any time soon, and when the next major economic downturn strikes the problem of hunger in America is going to get even worse.

For many Americans, hunger has become a way of life. Families that don't have enough money are often faced with some absolutely heartbreaking choices. Just check out what one Maine official that works with the Emergency Food Assistance Program recently had to say...

"One in six people in Maine don't know where their next meal is coming from, or skip a meal so their kids can eat, or have to choose between paying for prescriptions and food, or fuel for your car and food," Hall said. "What's amazing is that food is always the first thing to go from your budget. It's staggering, the choices people have to make."

Food banks all over the country try their best to do what they can, especially during the holidays, but it is often not enough. In fact, some food banks ran out of turkeys well in advance of Thanksgiving this year...

Three days in advance of Thanksgiving, the Pear Street Cupboard and Caf'e in Framingham, Massachusetts, is out of turkeys. According to organizers, "requests for help are up 400 percent over last year."

But it isn't just during the holidays that food banks are having problems keeping up with demand. The truth is that many food banks find themselves out of food and having to turn away hungry families all throughout the year. The following is from a recent Reuters article...

Overall, food pantries and soup kitchens reported a 5 percent spike in demand in 2012, according to the survey. More than half of providers said they were forced to turn away clients, reduce portion sizes, or limit their hours.

In Staten Island, all of the agencies that respond to hunger reported not having enough food to meet demand, while in the Bronx that was true for 80 percent of agencies. In Queens and Brooklyn, more than 60 percent of agencies did not have enough food to meet the needs of the populations they serve.

If you are able, please support your local food bank. The needs are great and they are only going to get greater.

The following are 20 facts about hunger in America that will blow your mind...

#1 According to one calculation, the number of Americans on food stamps now exceeds the combined populations of "Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming."

#2 In October 2008, 30.8 million Americans were on food stamps. By August 2012 that number had risen to 47.1 million Americans.

#3 Right now, one out of every seven Americans is on food stamps and one out of every four American children is on food stamps.

#4 It is projected that half of all American children will be on food stamps at least once before they turn 18 years of age.

#5 According to new numbers that were just released by the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans living in poverty increased to a new all-time record high of 49.7 million last year.

#6 The number of Americans living in poverty has increased by about 6 million over the past four years.

#7 Today, about one out of every four workers in the United States brings home wages that are at or below the federal poverty level.

#8 According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the poverty rate for children living in the United States is about 22 percent.

#9 Overall, approximately 57 percent of all children in the United States are living in homes that are either considered to be either "low income" or impoverished.

#10 In the United States today, close to 100 million Americans are considered to be either "poor" or "near poor".

#11 One university study estimates that child poverty costs the U.S. economy 500 billion dollars each year.

#12 Households that are led by a single mother have a 31.6 percent poverty rate.

#13 In 2010, 42 percent of all single mothers in the United States were on food stamps.

#14 According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 36.4 percent of all children in Philadelphia are living in poverty, 40.1 percent of all children in Atlanta are living in poverty, 52.6 percent of all children in Cleveland are living in poverty and 53.6 percent of all children in Detroit are living in poverty.

#15 Since 2007, the number of children living in poverty in the state of California has increased by 30 percent.

#16 Family homelessness in the Washington D.C. region (one of the wealthiest regions in the entire country) has risen 23 percent since the last recession began.

#17 There are 314 counties in the United States where at least 30 percent of the children are facing food insecurity.

#18 More than 20 million U.S. children rely on school meal programs to keep from going hungry.

#19 Right now, more than 100 million Americans are enrolled in at least one welfare program run by the federal government. And that does not even count Social Security or Medicare.

#20 According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, approximately 40 percent of all food in America "is routinely thrown away by consumers at home, discarded or unserved at restaurants or left unharvested on farms."

'Uncle Omar', 67, arrested for drink-driving in August Said after his arrest: 'I'll call the White House' Dressed casually in a sweater and baseball cap behind the till surrounded by spirits, this is the photo which shows Barack Obama's uncle continuing to dodge deportation charges while working in a liquor store.Onyango Obama, the son of the President's grandfather, faces allegations of
drink-driving and has also been handed a deportation order. The illegal immigrant 67-year-old, described as 'Uncle Omar' in President Obama's book, has allegedly been living illegally in the U.S. since 1992.But while his distant nephew may be Commander in Chief, Onyango Obama was spotted this week making ends meet working behind the till at Conti Liquors in Framingham, Massachusetts.Onyango Obama is believed to have come to the U.S. in 1963 to attend a high-profile prep school in Massachusetts.
He dropped out and was ordered to leave the country in 1989. He appealed the decision - but in 1992, he lost.
However, it is thought the deportation order was never enforced, and Obama has been living illegally in the U.S. ever since.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said soon after Obama was arrested that he would not receive any special treatment.
Prior to his court appearance today, Barack Obama's uncle was seen arriving at the liquor store in Framingham before completing a shift behind the counter selling alcohol to customers. He had been arrested in August after he allegedly nearly collided with an unmarked police patrol car near a fried chicken shop in Framingham, near Boston.
The policeman and another driver both slammed on their brakes after Onyango went through a stop sign, a judge heard at an earlier hearing.Arresting officer Val Krishtal said Obama was 'moderately unsteady on his feet' and was unable to walk in a straight line or balance on one leg.
The President's uncle also allegedly declared 'Maybe I should call the White House', when granted his prison phone call.
Onyango Obama said he would like to phone his powerful nephew after being offered the customary free call by police in Massachusetts when he was arrested in August.

Wong was one of the attorneys who represented Zeituni Onyango, President Obama's aunt, who last year was granted political asylum after spending ten years as an undocumented immigrant in Boston.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment from The Boston Herald , the paper reports .

Onyango Obama Arrest: Officer Val Krishtal's Driving Record Questioned By Lawyer
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - The defense for President Barack Obama's uncle is
reviewing the driving records of the police officer who arrested him on
drunken driving charges.

Onyango Obama, an illegal immigrant, appeared briefly in Framingham
District Court on Thursday as his lawyer told a judge he has obtained
the driving history of the officer who stopped Obama in August in
Framingham.
Officer Val Krishtal said in a written police report that he
stopped Obama after Obama did not come to a complete stop at a stop
sign, causing his police cruiser to nearly strike Obama's SUV. Krishtal
said Obama failed several field sobriety tests and registered 0.14 on a
blood-alcohol test, higher than the state's legal limit of 0.08.

Obama's attorney, P. Scott Bratton, said he is reviewing Krishtal's
driving records to see whether Krishtal has a history of accidents.
Bratton has said previously that Obama was not committing any traffic
violations and police had no right to pull him over. He is seeking to
suppress the traffic stop and the results of the blood-alcohol test. A
judge will hear arguments on those motions on March 1.

"We want to review the record to see if there is a pattern of conduct
of bad driving behavior on the part of the arresting officer," Bratton
said.

Krishtal totaled his police cruiser in November while responding to reports of gunshots.

Framingham police declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Middlesex
District Attorney Gerry Leone said prosecutors were not opposed to
turning over the records. Bratton said a lawyer for the town of
Framingham provided the records.

Obama, 67, who is originally from Kenya, is the half brother of the
president's late father. He has pleaded not guilty to operating under
the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and
failure to yield the right of way.

Police said that after being booked at the police station, Obama
said, "I think I will call the White House" when asked if he wanted to
make a telephone call to arrange for bail.

	The status of
Obama's immigration case could not immediately be determined. A
spokeswoman for the Executive Office for Immigration Review did not
immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.

Obama initially was held without bail on a detainer from U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement on allegations he violated an order
to return to Kenya 20 years ago. He was later released and has been
ordered to regularly check in with immigration officials.

The White House has said it expects Obama's arrest to be handled like any other case.

(CNN) -- A 26-year-old Massachusetts man with a physics degree was arrested and charged Wednesday with plotting an attack on the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol with a remote-controlled model aircraft, authorities said.

Rezwan Ferdaus, a U.S. citizen from Ashland, Massachusetts, planned to use model aircraft filled with C-4 plastic explosives, authorities said.

As a result of an undercover FBI investigation, Ferdaus, who has a physics degree from Northeastern University in Boston, was charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to al Qaeda for attacks on U.S. soldiers overseas, authorities said.

His federal public defender couldn't be reached immediately for comment.

A law enforcement official said Ferdaus posed no immediate danger to the public because undercover operatives kept in close contact with him.

"There is no information to indicate he was connected to a foreign terrorist organization. It appears he was radicalized watching videos on the internet. He was given the opportunity to back down, but he never wavered" from his intention to carry out the attacks, the source said.

The investigation also involved a cooperating witness, and authorities began recording conversations between that witness and Ferdaus in January, authorities said.

Ferdaus began planning a violent "jihad" against America in early 2010, authorities said, and he began supplying the FBI undercover agents with cell phones rigged to act as electric switches for improved explosive devices, intended to be used to kill U.S. soldiers overseas.

Undercover federal agents also gave Ferdaus 25 pounds of fake C-4 explosives. Only a very small amount of it was the real thing, the source said.

The FBI agents also gave Ferdaus six AK-47 assault rifles and three grenades, but they weren't functional, the source said.

Between May and this month, Ferdaus also ordered and acquired a $6,500 remote-controlled aircraft, an F-86 Sabre, that he kept in a rented storage facility in Framingham, Massachusetts, that he maintained under a false name, authorities said.

Despite coming into possession of the plane, another law enforcement official said, "The person was never really a threat."

Ferdaus is unmarried with no children, authorities said.

A federal magistrate in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Wednesday ordered Ferdaus to be held until Monday, when a detention hearing is scheduled, authorities said.

almost hits cop car, tries to call White House
UPDATE:
The Australian is reporting that Onyango Obama has retained Cleveland lawyer Margaret Wong. This is the same immigration attorney who successfully represented Mr. Obama's sister Zeituni, when she managed to avoid deportation to Kenya. Mr. Obama pleaded not guilty at his remand hearing.
*Clarification : Onyango Obama nearly hit the police car. He did not actually hit it, according to police reports.
-------
A number of media outlets have already reported that an illegal immigrant from Kenya by the name of Onyango Obama, 67, was arrested last week on Wednesday after he nearly rammed his SUV into a police car in Framingham, Massachusetts.
He was later charged with DUI among other violations. I spoke to Framingham Public Information Officer Lieutenant Delaney who told me that when Onyango Obama was asked at booking if he wanted to make a telephone call to arrange for bail, the Kenyan immigrant replied: "I think I will call the White House."
It should be noted that the Times of London , highlighted an Onyango Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign, when the British daily found President Barack Obama's "Aunt Zeituni" living in Boston illegally.:
Dreams From My Father was first published in 1995, and the story of how Mr Obama returned to Kenya in 1988 to trace his roots has become the cornerstone of his political biography. Yet the US media appears to have overlooked the passage indicating that at least one relative of Mr Obama's had moved to America and might still be there.
Two thirds of the way through the book Mr Obama's half-sister talked about Africans who had emigrated to the West and were never heard of again, "like our Uncle Omar, in Boston . . . They've been lost, you see".
A few pages later Mr Obama meets his step-grandmother, Sarah, for the first time in the village of Kogelo. On the walls of her hut are photographs of Omar, "the uncle who had left for America 25 years ago and never came back". Touchingly, she asks the future presidential candidate if he has any news of Omar, her son and Mr Obama's half-uncle.
The article continues:
This triggered a six-week search, one that would lead eventually to Boston and to Aunt Zeituni. Public record searches found traces of O. Onyango Obama, Uncle Omar's real name, in Boston. A friend and a former landlady said that he now uses the name Obama Onyango.
In the course of searching for Uncle Omar The Times found a Zeituni Onyango, who also played a prominent part in Mr Obama's book.
In the memoir Auntie Zeituni, Uncle Omar's sister, explained the family's complex family tree to the future presidential candidate, introduced him to other relatives and fed him a herbal remedy for an upset stomach.
Also, a wikipedia page about the president's family that has not been edited since August 2 mentions Uncle Omar:
Omar ObamaHalf-uncle of Barack Obama, born on June 3, 1944 in Nyang'oma Kogelo. Oldest son of Onyango and Sarah Obama, resides in Boston, Massachusetts.
The daily log from the Framingham Police Department shows the Onyango Obama that was arrested last week in Framingham, a Boston suburb, has the birth date of June 3, 1944.
Metrowest Daily first reported Onyango Obama's arrest:
After the near crash, Onyango Obama, 67, told Officer Val Krishtal that Krishtal should have yielded to his Mitsubishi SUV, according to a report filed yesterday in Framingham District Court.
Krishtal said he and another driver had to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting the SUV, which rolled through a stop sign and took a quick left turn.
Obama said he doubted the officer slammed on his brakes because he did not hear the tires squeal, the report says.
Krishtal said he was on Waverly Street headed toward South Street when his police car was cut off. Krishtal pulled the SUV over around 7:10 p.m.
Obama failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested. At the police station, Obama failed a Breathalyzer test, registering .14. The state legal limit is .08.
Obama was charged with driving under the influence of liquor and driving to endanger. He was also cited for not using a turn signal.
According to article, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement has warrant for his arrest and ICE previously ordered him to be deported back to Kenya. In the meantime, a judge has not set bail on the driving charges but ordered that he be held on the ICE warrant.

A mother-of-three who got plastic surgery to look good for her 40th birthday died a day after the procedure.Adriana da Silva, 39, a Brazilian immigrant who had set up her own successful cleaning business in Framingham, Massachusetts, complained of feeling light-headed the day after getting breast implants. She then fell in the bathroom of her home and was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead.Doctors told the family she had a clot in her heart.Friends of Adriana said she just wanted to look more beautiful as she entered a new decade in her life. She was laid to rest just days before her 40th birthday. She is said to have gone to Dr Sanjeev Sharma's Destination Beauty MedSpa, whose website advertises breast augmentation for $3,500 to $4,500.

She had the surgery last weekend, fell the next day in the bathroom and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The family says doctors told them they found a blood clot in her heart.
The medical examiner hasn't ruled on a cause of death for the 39-year-old and autopsy results could take up to two weeks.Through the public relations firm ML Strategies, the doctor who performed the breast-enhancement surgery said yesterday that he was saddened to hear of her death.

It said: 'His thoughts and prayers are with the da Silva family during this difficult time.'
According to state licensing boards, the doctor is shown as a family practitioner with no particular expertise in plastic surgery; however, in the last 10 years, he has no criminal, malpractice, or disciplinary complaints against him.
ML Strategies said Dr Sharma has practised medicine without incident for 16 years.
The firm said he teaches at Tufts and Boston University medical schools and is on staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham.

By Georgia East, http://www.sun-sentinel.com

It's about 11 a.m. in the small, sun-drenched building, and 4-year-old Leila Ekendiz has an idea.

It's her classmate Ian's 8th birthday so she wants to make him a birthday card. About five other kids follow her into a room with a closet full of crayons, paper and stickers.

When they finish, some of the kids wander over to the computers while others head for the garden or to the refrigerator. At the Sunset Sudbury School, a new private school in Davie, the 11 students, ages 4 to 9, set their own agendas. Chalkboards, lesson plans and tests simply don't exist.

In traditional schools there are so many students that kids are not allowed to talk to each other during their school day,'' said staffer Idelma Quintana, whose son attends the school. "Our kids here are learning how to get along with other kids and negotiate conflict.''

As public schools adopt tougher standards and emphasize standardized tests, alternative schools have become more popular.

"The regular public school system and even some private schools tend to operate under the paradigm that kids are lazy and need to be forced to learn,'' said Jerry Mintz, director of the New York-based Alternative Education Resource Organization. "We take a diametrically different approach that starts with the assumption that kids are natural learners.''

Mintz said in the past two decades, the number of home-schoolers nationwide has grown from about 20,000 to about 2 million. He said there are about 12,000 alternative schools, including charter and public alternatives and Montessoris.

Of those, about 200 are "democratic schools," in which students play a big role in decision-making, he said.

There has been a lot of debate, however, about the concept. While some experts say it is needed to keep children motivated and feed their innate curiosity, others have argued that kids who lack motivation can flounder.

The original Sudbury school in Framingham, Mass., opened in 1968 and challenged families to re-think their own ideas about education. There are now 24 such schools in the United States. The only other one in Florida is in Palm Harbor, near Clearwater.

Students don't take any standardized tests - not even FCATs - and they don't get a traditional high school diploma. Despite this, Dionne Ekendiz, one of the Davie school founders, said about 80 percent of Sudbury graduates are accepted into their first choice of college, proving the students are learning.

To get into a college, students can opt to take the entrance exams. But founders say essays and interviews with admissions counselors set their students apart.

Joshua Joseph, 9, recently learned how to make pop-up books. He said he likes that he can spend as much time as he wants playing computer games.

While some may question how the format works with reading and math, "the truth is, that's the easy stuff,'' Ekendiz said. "Our children will need skills like self-understanding, self-motivation and creative problem-solving.''

Sunset Sudbury, on 66th Avenue near Stirling Road, opened in August after about three years of planning. Its founders are parents turned off by traditional public schools.

The school, which hopes to serve K-12, doesn't group students by age range, unlike some Montessoris. Here, kids arrive anytime between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. The school stays open until 3:30 p.m., but parents can take students out during the day.

If a child wants to spend his days catching caterpillars, founders say that's fine because it builds patience. Coming to school dressed as a princess is a form of expression. And when students plan a field trip, discussing the cost is a practical way to learn math.

Still, the founders say it's not for everyone. The students have to want to be there, and setting their own agendas adds responsibilities.

Every day each student meets with three to four adult staffers and discusses the day's plan. Students police the rules and have a judicial committee that talks with violators about the consequences of breaking a rule.

The school, which charges $6,600 a year for full-time tuition, would like to grow to about 20 students and will have an open house from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Veezie Bowden, whose 4-year-old son Julian attends the school, said she thought he'd spend most of his day playing. Instead he developed an interest in writing after mingling with his peers.

She admits she had reservations in the beginning.

"It's not easy grappling with the idea that your kid is not going to get a traditional high school diploma or take the FCAT,'' said Bowden. "But at the end of the day, I saw what graduates of Sudbury schools were doing with their lives. They were eloquent, responsible and mature.

"My feeling was that if I could have that for my children, all of the other stuff doesn't matter.''
