The Marathon County Sheriff's Department released footage of 20-year old prisoner Frederick Morris knocking out corrections officer Julie Christensen with a single punch on March 27 shortly after lunch at the Marathon County Jail. Morris also struck another corrections officer in the face and can be seen running around while other prisoners reportedly shouted "Hope she dies".

Christensen had to go to an intensive care unit for her injuries, and Morris is charged with two counts of battery by a prisoner and one charge of aggravated battery. The video was released to a civilian review panel which was looking for ways to improve the jail's conditions.

Fed up, RNC's Fla Hispanic outreach director becomes Democrat

Presumably few Republican operatives have a better handle on the national Republican party's efforts to court Hispanic voters than Pablo Pantoja, a native of Puerto Rico, and Florida State University alum appointed by the Republican National Committee to oversee H ispanic outreach in Florida last year . He also worked as a field director in the 2010 midterm elections.

Now - amid another debate over immigration reform and a widely touted Heritage foundation study on immigrants touted by a fellow who used to argue that Hispanics have a lower IQ than non-Hispanic immigrants - Pantojo has decided he's more comfortable joining the Democratic party.

Here's an email he sent today:

Friend,

Yes, I have changed my political affiliation to the Democratic Party.

It doesn't take much to see the culture of intolerance surrounding the Republican Party today. I have wondered before about the seemingly harsh undertones about immigrants and others. Look no further; a well-known organization recently confirms the intolerance of that which seems different or strange to them.

Studies geared towards making - human beings - viewed as less because of their immigrant status to outright unacceptable claims, are at the center of the immigration debate. Without going too deep on everything surrounding immigration today, the more resounding example this past week was reported by several media outlets.

A researcher included as part of a past dissertation his theory that "the totality of the evidence suggests a genetic component to group differences in IQ." The researcher reinforces these views by saying "No one knows whether Hispanics will ever reach IQ parity with whites, but the prediction that new Hispanic immigrants will have low-IQ children and grandchildren is difficult to argue against."

Although the organization distanced themselves from those assertions, other immigration-related research is still padded with the same racist and eugenics-based innuendo. Some Republican leaders have blandly (if at all) denied and distanced themselves from this but it doesn't take away from the culture within the ranks of intolerance. The pseudo-apologies appear to be a quick fix to deep-rooted issues in the Republican Party in hopes that it will soon pass and be forgotten.

The complete disregard of those who are in disadvantage is also palpable. We are not looking at an isolated incident of rhetoric or research. Others subscribe to motivating people to action by stating, "In California, a majority of all Hispanic births are illegitimate. That's a lot of Democratic voters coming." The discourse that moves the Republican Party is filled with this anti-immigrant movement and overall radicalization that is far removed from reality. Another quick example beyond the immigration debate happened during CPAC this year when a supporter shouted ""For giving him shelter and food for all those years?" while a moderator explained how Frederick Douglass had written a letter to his slave master saying that he forgave him for "all the things you did to me." I think you get the idea.

When the political discourse resorts to intolerance and hate, we all lose in what makes America great and the progress made in society.

Although I was born an American citizen, I feel that my experience, and that of many from Puerto Rico, is intertwined with those who are referred to as illegal. My grandfather served in an all-Puerto Rican segregated Army unit, the 65th Infantry Regiment. He then helped, along my grandmother, shatter glass ceilings for Puerto Rican women raising my aunt to become the first Puerto Rican woman astronomer with a PhD in astrophysics (an IQ of a genius as far as I'm concerned). Puerto Ricans, as many other Americans still today have to face issues of discrimination in voting and civil rights.

Regardless of what political affiliation people choose, my respect for some remains. I don't expect all Hispanics to do the same (although I would hope so) but I'm taking a stand against this culture of intolerance.

I am also making a modest contribution (here: http://bit.ly/12uf3g8) to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for the efforts in helping protect the rights of immigrants and civil liberties in general.

With warm regards,

-pablo

Raymond Frederick "Ray" Harryhausen (June 29, 1920 - May 7, 2013) was an American visual effects creator, writer, and producer who lived in London, England, from 1960 until his death in 2013. He created a form of stop-motion model animation known as "Dynamation."

His most memorable works include the animation on Mighty Joe Young, with pioneer Willis H. O'Brien, which won the Academy Award for special effects (1949); The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, his first color film; and Jason and the Argonauts, featuring a famous sword fight against seven skeleton warriors.

Note: To the best of my knowledge this is the ONLY work by Ray Harryhausen that ever has been or ever will be in the public domain.

"That Hezbollah ever killed American soldiers and civilians is only spouted by Zionists."

Read a comment response to me earlier today: That Hezbollah ever killed American soldiers and civilians is only spouted by Zionists.

Hezbollah is a resistance movement dedicated to defending Lebanon and to supporting the right of return of Palestinians - who incidentally are mostly Sunni and Christian, not Shia like Hezbollah.

Delusions of grandeur from a terrorist supporter . historically inaccurate to the point of disbelief. I dont care about your fantasies, or of the pending equalisations of "America did this" or "America did that."

Hezbollah have committed attrocities, they are terrorists and at best oppression-fighters (because freedom-fighter would assume they fight for freedom, rather than as clearly stated a religious theocracy).

Hezbollah has hijacked planes, they have kidnapped israelis and americans, they have been responsible for a number of suicide attacks.

But the comment clearly states that they never hurt a hair of an American. How is this possible when if hezbollah was responsible for the two explosions in Beirut on October 23, 1983 that killed 241 American Marines and 56 French servicemen sleeping in their barracks. Can't pull the wool over the eyes of any man or woman with access to google.

Donald Kagan, Yale's great classicist gives his final lecture, fighting as ever for Western civilization.

By MATTHEW KAMINSKI New Haven, Conn.

April 26, 2013, 6:49 p.m. ET

Donald Kagan is engaging in one last argument. For his "farewell lecture" here at Yale on Thursday afternoon, the 80-year-old scholar of ancient Greece-whose four-volume history of the Peloponnesian War inspired comparisons to Edward Gibbon's Roman history-uncorked a biting critique of American higher education.

Universities, he proposed, are failing students and hurting American democracy. Curricula are "individualized, unfocused and scattered." On campus, he said, "I find a kind of cultural void, an ignorance of the past, a sense of rootlessness and aimlessness." Rare are "faculty with atypical views," he charged. "Still rarer is an informed understanding of the traditions and institutions of our Western civilization and of our country and an appreciation of their special qualities and values." He counseled schools to adopt "a common core of studies" in the history, literature and philosophy "of our culture." By "our" he means Western.

This might once have been called incitement. In 1990, as dean of Yale College, Mr. Kagan argued for the centrality of the study of Western civilization in an "infamous" (his phrase) address to incoming freshmen. A storm followed. He was called a racist-or as the campus daily more politely editorialized, a peddler of "European cultural arrogance."

Not so now. Mr. Kagan received a long standing ovation from students and alumni in the packed auditorium. Heading into retirement, he has been feted as a beloved and popular teacher and Yale icon. The PC wars of the 1990s feel dated. Maybe, as one undergrad told me after the lecture, "the pendulum has started to swing back" toward traditional values in education.

Mr. Kagan offers another explanation. "You can't have a fight," he says one recent day at his office, "because you don't have two sides. The other side won."

He means across academia, but that is also true in his case. Mr. Kagan resigned the deanship in April 1992, lobbing a parting bomb at the faculty that bucked his administration. His plans to create a special Western Civilization course at Yale-funded with a $20 million gift from philanthropist and Yale alum Lee Bass, who was inspired by the 1990 lecture-blew up three years later amid a political backlash. "I still cry when I think about it," says Mr. Kagan.

As he looks at his Yale colleagues today, he says, "you can't find members of the faculty who have different opinions." I point at him. "Not anymore!" he says and laughs. The allure of "freedom" and "irresponsibility" were too strong to resist, he says.

His sharp tongue and easy sense of humor hearken to the Brooklyn of his youth. Born in 1932 in a Lithuanian shtetl, Mr. Kagan was raised in Brownsville, which was then a working-class Jewish neighborhood. He rooted for the Yankees on Brooklyn Dodgers turf-"everything you need to know about him," as his son Robert, the neoconservative writer, once said. He was a high school fullback. Mr. Kagan is personally warm, always tough and occasionally smart alecky. Imagine Robert DeNiro as an eminent conservative scholar of ancient Athens. He has no patience for "nonsense" or "wrong ideas." He's a guy who'll tell you what's what and that's that. Generations of faculty and students came away bruised from Kagan encounters.

The tussles over course offerings and campus speech of course speak to something larger. Democracy, wrote Mr. Kagan in "Pericles of Athens" (1991), is "one of the rarest, most delicate and fragile flowers in the jungle of human experience." It relies on "free, autonomous and self-reliant" citizens and "extraordinary leadership" to flourish, even survive.

These kinds of citizens aren't born-they need to be educated. "The essence of liberty, which is at the root of a liberal education, is that meaningful freedom means that you have choices to make," Mr. Kagan says. "At the university, there must be intellectual variety. If you don't have , it's not only that you are deprived of knowing some of the things you might know. It's that you are deprived of testing the things that you do know or do think you know or believe in, so that your knowledge is superficial."

As dean, Mr. Kagan championed hard sciences, rigorous hiring standards for faculty, and the protection of free speech. Those who see liberal education in crisis return to those ideas. "Crisis suggests it might recover," Mr. Kagan shoots back. "Maybe it's had its day. Democracy may have had its day. Concerns about the decline of liberty in our whole polity is what threatens all of the aspects of it, including democracy."

Taking a grim view of the Periclean era in Athens, Plato and Aristotle believed that democracy inevitably led to tyranny. The Founding Fathers took on their criticism and strove to balance liberty with equality under the law. Mr. Kagan, who grew up a Truman Democrat, says that when he was young the U.S. needed to redress an imbalance by emphasizing equality. The elite universities after the war opened to minorities and women, not to mention Brooklyn College grads like himself-then "it was all about merit," he says.

The 1960s brought a shift and marked his own political awakening. Teaching at Cornell, Mr. Kagan watched armed black students occupy a university building in 1969. The administration caved to their demands without asking them to give up their rifles and bandoliers. He joined Allan Bloom and other colleagues in protest. In the fall of that year, he moved to Yale. Bloom ended up at the University of Chicago and in 1987 published "The Closing of the American Mind," his best-selling attack on the shortcomings of higher education.

In the decades since, faculties have gained "extraordinary authority" over universities, Mr. Kagan says. The changes in the universities were mirrored in the society at large. "The tendency in this century and in the previous century at least has been toward equality of result and every other kind of equality that could be claimed without much regard for liberty," he says. "Right now the menace is certainly to liberty."

Over lunch at the private Mory's club last week, we marvel over the first-ever NCAA championship for Yale's hockey team, the oldest program in the country. "Unbelievable!" says Mr. Kagan with the gleam of a sports obsessive. In 1987, he stepped in for a year to direct Yale's athletic department-probably the only classics professor ever to hold the post anywhere. His first initiative was to call to disband the NCAA or take Yale out of it. "I wish I had," he says. "It's so disgusting, it's so hypocritical, it's so wicked. The NCAA is just a trade organization meant to increase profits."

Whether athletics, democracy or war are the topics of discussion, Mr. Kagan can offer examples from the ancients. His lifelong passion is Thucydides and the Peloponnesian War-the epic clash between those former allies, militaristic Sparta and democratic Athens, that closed out the fifth century B.C.

As Thucydides wrote, people go to war out of "honor, fear and interest." War, he also said, "is a violent teacher." Another enduring lesson from him, says Mr. Kagan, is "that you can expect people, whatever they may be, to seek to maximize their power"-then a slight pause-"unless they're Europeans and have checked their brains at the door, so mortified are they, understandably, by what happened to them in the 20th century. They can't be taken seriously."

These days the burden of seriousness among free states falls on America, a fickle and unusual power. The Romans had no qualms about quashing their enemies, big or small. While the U.S. won two global conflicts and imposed and protected the current global order, the recent record shows failed or inconclusive engagements in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

Some would argue that free societies are too soft to fight brutal wars too long. Mr. Kagan offers culture and political leadership as an explanation. "We're a certain kind of culture which makes it hard for us to behave rationally when the rational thing is to be tough," he says. "We can do it when we're scared to death and there seem to be no alternatives. When it's time to nail down something, we very often sneak away."

The protection and distance offered by two oceans gives America the idea-or delusion-of being able to stay out of the world's problems. Mr. Kagan also wonders about possible "geocultural" shifts at play. A hundred years ago, most people worked the land for themselves. Today they work for a paycheck, usually in an office. "Fundamentally we are dependent on people who pay our salaries," says Mr. Kagan. "In the liberal era, in our lifetime, we have come more to expect it is the job of the government to provide for the needs that we can't provide. Everything is negotiable. Everything is subject to talk." Maybe that has weakened the American will.

Also don't forget, says Mr. Kagan, "unsubtle Christianity" and its strong strain of pacifism. "Who else has a religion filled with the notion 'turn the other cheek'?" he asks. "Who ever heard of such a thing?! If you're gonna turn the other cheek, go home. Give up the ball."

In 2000, Mr. Kagan and his younger son, Frederick, a military historian and analyst, published "While America Sleeps." The book argued for the reversal of the Clinton Cold War peace dividend to meet unforeseen but inevitable threats to come. The timing was uncanny. A year later, 9/11 forced the Pentagon to rearm.

With the end of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the U.S. is slashing defense again. "We do it every time," Mr. Kagan says. "Failing to understand the most elementary childish fact, which is: If you don't want trouble with somebody else, be sure he has something to be afraid of."

Brownsville, not Thucydides, taught him that. "Any kid who grows up in a relatively tough neighborhood gets quick early lessons in what the realities are," he says. His 1995 book, "On the Origins of War," made a moral and strategic case to exert as much effort and money to safeguard peace as to win a war.

Thucydides identified man's potential for folly and greatness. Mr. Kagan these days tends toward the darker view. He sees threats coming from Iran and in Asia, yet no leadership serious about taking them up. The public is too ignorant or irresponsible to care. "When you allow yourself to think of it, you don't know whether you are going to laugh or cry," he says.

The Kagan thesis is bleak but not fatalistic. The fight to shape free citizens in schools, through the media and in the public square goes on. "There is no hope for anything if you don't have a population that buys into" a strong and free society, he says. "That can only be taught. It doesn't come in nature."

Black conservative leaders discuss the reason the NRA was founded and how gun control is an effort to control people.

The Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE) hosted a group of prominent figures from the African American community at 9:45A.M. on Friday, February 22nd at the National Press Club to speak out against gun control legislation currently being considered on Capitol Hill.

CURE is the largest black conservative think tank in the nation and is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

CURE organized the news conference in response to concerns shared by black conservatives that the Senate proposed laws will restrict their ability to defend themselves, their property and their families. They are also concerned that the proposed gun control legislation puts too much power in the hands of politicians.

"I believe that it is our duty to stand together and challenge the proposals currently on the table in the Senate, which invoke painful memories of Jim Crow laws and black codes," said CURE president and founder, Star Parker. "Black history is rife with government demands for background checks in order to qualify for constitutional rights. All Americans should be concerned."

Star Parker, a nationally syndicated columnist and other noted thought leaders, authors and speakers will make the case against the type of gun control measures President Obama and his liberal allies are proposing. While the group believes that Sandy Hook was a national tragedy, they oppose its use as an opportunity to advance government control and strip any American citizens of their constitutional rights. In the middle of Black History Month, CURE is calling for a serious national dialogue about the impact of gun control on the black community.

An account of a delaying action that opened the Battle of Campbell Station on November 16, 1863. The site is not far from my home. There is a strange coincidence associated with the place. Pictured below are Captain Frederick Swift (right) of the 17th Michigan Volunteers in the American Civil War, and Sergeant Mitchell Stout (left) of the 44th Artillery Regiment, United States Army in Vietnam. I could not locate a photograph of Sergeant Joseph Brandle. Time-- 5:32.

Recorded practice today for next Friday's show... Thirteen takes to get one without a drop. Only got six more days, wish me luck.

The global economy may be on the crux of another slowdown. This was made evident in March, when global delivery bellwether FedEx Corporation (NYSE/FDX) reported a 31% decline in its third-quarter earnings and, more importantly, cut its forecast for fiscal 2013.

What was interesting was that the announcement was followed by the insider sale of 202,000 shares of FedEx by the company's President and CEO, Frederick W. Smith, according to Edgar Online. But the insider selling was not isolated, as there have been eight insider sales, versus only two insider buys, over the past six months, according to Thomson Financial. Institutions have also been selling, with ownership down 6.1% quarter-to-quarter.

The results from FedEx suggest that the global economy may be set for some stalling, since the company represents a good barometer of global economic activity. And the insider selling also doesn't really help the company.

On Wednesday morning, the case for the slowing in the global economy was supported by a report from the World Trade Organization (WTO). The report predicted that trade in the global economy would rise a mere 3.3% in 2013, well below the previous guidance calling for growth of 4.5% and just ahead of the lackluster two-percent rise in 2012. (Source: Heilprin, J., "Global Trade To Be Weaker Than Expected," Associated Press, April 10, 2013.) The WTO report also said the average growth was 5.3% over the past two decades, so the global economy may soon be facing another headwind that will impact economic renewal.

Looking at the trade situation from another angle, the Baltic Dry Index, a commonly referenced gauge used to measure the demand for shipping capacity, remains negative.

The chart of the Baltic Dry Index below indicates a downward-sloping channel since its peak in 2008, when the Great Recession hit. The index has subsequently rallied, but in this case, it wa... Read More

DEMOCRATIC PARTY LYING ABOUT RACIST ROOTS

Democrats are lying about their past and overwhelmingly winning minority voters, and a prominent black conservative says they will keep winning until conservatives learn how to win the propaganda war and champion the story of slave-turned-abolitionist Frederick Douglass as an outreach to black voters.

K. Carl Smith is a rising star among black conservatives. He recently addressed the 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference and is author of "Frederick Douglass Republicans: The Movement to Re-Ignite America's Passion for Liberty." He told WND conservatives have the right message, but their approach to voters is deeply lacking.

"The Republican Party has done a horrendous job of talking about a message that unites people. They don't talk about liberty enough, and that's the all-encompassing message that you want to put out there. That's not happening. It's not being done in a very effective way," Smith said.

"We're so badly losing the propaganda battle. Whenever we try to express our conservative values, we have already been discredited, so our message falls on deaf ears. I contend that the No. 1 problem facing the GOP and the conservative movement is not the problem of messaging per se, but this whole idea about winning a propaganda battle so your message will connect with people and resonate with people. So when you talk about conservatism, they don't see you as a sellout. They don't see you as a racist or that you don't care about the poor. We've got to start winning that propaganda battle first, and that's what we're not doing a very good job of," Smith said.

He said Democrats are very effective in the propaganda battles, largely because their message to black voters and other solidly Democratic voting blocs is built on a glaring lie.

"They have massively co-opted the history of the Republican Party. If you go to the Democratic Party's website right now, go to the 'About Us.' Go to the link that says 'Our History.' On that page, the first sentence says for the past 200 years, the Democratic Party's been the leader of civil rights . That's not true!," Smith exclaimed.

"Two hundred years, that's what, 1813? The slave masters were Democrats. The Democratic Party started the KKK to suppress black votes. So they're co-opting the history of the Republican Party and have gotten away with it," he said. "The way we have to counter this is we have to speak the truth. We have to get in the trenches. We've got to let people know in a very non-condescending and non-confrontational manner, the true history of both parties and let them know that we need people in both political parties with a Frederick Douglass perspective," Smith said.

So why does Smith hold up the brilliant 19th century orator and writer Frederick Douglass as the key to rekindling Americans' passion for liberty among all races?

The best way to understand what conservatism is and how it improves your quality of life, you've got to bring Frederick Douglass into the equation," he said. "Nobody can out-victimize Frederick Douglass. You've just got to elevate his life. He was a man who was born below poverty and rose to be very prosperous. He had $300,000 in the bank, which is the equivalent of $25 million today. So when you think about it, being on the plantation as a slave and depending on the master to take care of him, Douglass was a 47-percenter. But upon discovering his God-given gifts and talents and becoming an entrepreneur, he became a one-percenter."

Smith said clothing the conservative message in the success of Frederick Douglass will take the steam out of accusations that conservatives look down on people of other races or the poor.

"With Frederick Douglass, that's off the table," he said. "You can't call a Frederick Douglass Republican a sell-out. What we're saying is, we believe, and we are in lock-step, with the values of Frederick Douglass, who respected the Constitution and respected the Founding Fathers."

Smith said he grew up in a Democratic household and only later discovered that his core beliefs actually lined up with the conservative movement. He said conservatives must patiently reach out to those who have been convinced Republicans are responsible for the ills they suffer.

"I could care less about a person's political affiliation. What I've learned matters most is not the party that you're in but the way in which you vote. The way in which you vote doesn't show your love and your faithfulness to the God that you say you serve. Once you make it a values thing and not a party affiliation thing and you can express that in a non-confrontational way, when people realize that they have been lied to and betrayed, that when they change how they vote," said Smith, who detailed the pain of discovering how he had been politically deceived.

"When I grew up in Alabama, I thought George Wallace was a Republican. I thought Bull Connor was a Republican. I believed the people that bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., were part of the Republican Party. All that was not true. When I realized this was not true, I went through a period of depression because all of the things I believed to be true I found it was a lie."

Newly Released: Eerie JFK Jr. Pictures

Boyhood John F. Kennedy Jr. Images Released

The JFK Library has today released these three newly digitized images of John F. Kennedy Jr. sitting in the pilot's seat of the presidential helicopter as a toddler during his father's presidency.

The photos, according to the JFK library, were taken during a weekend trip at the presidential country retreat at Camp David in Frederick County, Md., on March 31, 1963.

Dressed in a bright red jacket, the 2-year-old pint-sized Kennedy grins as he pretends to pilot the helicopter, and mugs to the camera.

The photos were shot by Robert Knudsen, the White House photographer from 1946 until 1974. Knudsen shot for the White House through five presidential administrations: Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon.

Though these images were previously available on film, the library has now digitized them and posted them to their website and to a Tumblr page .

The photos, though cute, perhaps foreshadow the young Kennedy's death. As an adult, Kennedy went on to become a lawyer and magazine publisher, as well as a recreational pilot. He died when a small plane carrying him; his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy; and her older sister, Lauren Bessette, went down over the Atlantic Ocean near Martha's Vineyard on July 16, 1999.

The crash was determined to have been caused by "the pilot's failure to maintain control of the airplane during a descent over water at night, which was a result of spatial disorientation," according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Kennedy was 39 when he died.
