Roi Kais, 06.17.13

News outlets affiliated with the Syrian opposition estimated that a massive explosion heard Sunday night at the Al-Maza military airport west of Damascus area was the result of an Israeli attack.

The reports quoted opposition activists as saying that the blast at the Al-Maza neighborhood bore the hallmarks of an explosion that rocked the outskirts of Damascus in May. Foreign news agencies said that explosion was part of an Israeli airstrike.

"My house overlooks the airport. At a certain point we saw armored vehicles enter the airport," an opposition source said. "They were probably equipped with mobile radar systems. Then we heard the sound of a missile striking the vehicles. It was the same sound we heard in Mount Qasioun (site of the alleged airstrike in May)."

Another eyewitness said: "The explosion was like a volcano. The flames reached the sky. The sound was the same one that was heard in Qasioun."

According to foreign reports, Israel attacked Syria twice within a few days in the beginning of May. President Bashar Assad's regime claims the airstrikes targeted a military research center, but the West believes Israel targeted Iranian weapons systems that were designated for Hezbollah in Lebanon. Since then, senior Syrian officials said the country would retaliate immediately in case Israel attacks again.

IDF not commenting on reports Israel attacked Syrian airport

By JPOST.COM STAFF, 06/17/2013

The IDF was not commenting on a report on a Syrian TV station associated with the rebel forces that Israel attacked on Sunday night the military airbase Al-Miza, West of Damascus, Israel Radio reported. The report noted that a rebel organization had taken responsibility for the attack after the explosion took place on Sunday night.

The TV station reported that Israel bombed advanced weapons and radar systems that were recently brought to the airport, according to Israel Radio.

Eye witnesses said that the explosions were large and that neither the Assad regime nor the rebels had the capability to create explosions of such a magnitude.

The video below shows the fires following the explosions last night at the airport outside Damascus. It's probably more likely that either they were moving missiles around when they had an accident, or the FSA launched a twin carbomb attack, as they claimed last night. Mezze airport is a rocket launching site . It's also the place where Buk missiles were spotted last month.

Hezbollah's Involvement in Syria Creates More Tentions Between Shiites & Sunnis in the Region

Allegiances are proving costly for Islamic
militant group Hezbollah as the war in Syria deepens the
sectarian divide in the Middle East .

Days
after the town of al-Qusair fell to President Bashar al-Assad's forces this
month with help from Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah, the group was shunned by the
six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council. The oil-rich,
mainly Sunni GCC labeled it a terrorist group and threatened unprecedented
measures against its loyalists and their financial transactions. The U.S. said
last week it will help arm the Syrian opposition.

Hezbollah's involvement in Syria has led to
greater polarization between Islam's two main sects, said Salman Shaikh,
director of the Brookings Institution's Doha Center in Qatar.
Without the group, it "would have been more of an inter-Syrian fight rather
than being a sectarian one," he said.

The result is a watershed in the 31-year
history of Hezbollah, which seeks to portray itself as an anti- Israel resistance
group and a champion of the downtrodden and oppressed, irrespective of their
brand of Islam.

Its fighters are also likely to get mired
further in Syria's civil war to protect its central conduit of weapons and
prevent the well-armed rebels from strengthening Sunni militias in Lebanon,
said Torbjorn Soltvedt, senior analyst at Maplecroft, a U.K.-based risk
consultant.

Sunni Militias

"Combined with significant pressure from Iran , these factors
are likely to lead to even stronger involvement by Hezbollah in the Syrian
conflict despite the hostile GCC stands," he said.

Most of the rebels fighting Assad are Sunni Muslims
while the president belongs to the minority Alawite sect, an off-shoot of
Shiite Islam. The split resulted from a dispute over succession following
Prophet Muhammad's death in 632.

Hezbollah's open alignment with the Syrian
regime has triggered an escalation in the Sunni rhetoric, including from Saudi Arabia 's
top cleric.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Al al-Sheikh
called Hezbollah a "loathsome, sectarian" group in a statement carried June 6
by the official Saudi Press Agency. He also endorsed Egyptian-born cleric Yusuf
al-Qaradawi's call on Sunni Muslims from his base in Qatar to fight a holy war
in Syria.

Saudi Arabia's stock market, the Arab world's
biggest, dropped the most in almost two years on June 15 after King Abdullah
interrupted his vacation in Morocco because of what the official Saudi Press Agency said
were "escalating concerns relating to events in the region."

'Arm Us!'

Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, who hails
from the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood, on June 15 suspended diplomatic relations
with Assad. Egyptians stood by Lebanon and Hezbollah against Israel in 2006,
and "today we stand against Hezbollah for their crimes in Syria," Mursi told a stadium packed
with his supporters.

Khaled Al-Qazza, Mursi's secretary for
foreign affairs, last week said Egyptians were free to make up their minds
about going to Syria.

More fighters may make their way to Syria
after Mohammad Al-Areefi, an influential Saudi scholar whose comments are often
cited, gave a sermon in a Cairo mosque on June 14 urging Sunnis to take up arms
against Assad and Hezbollah. Scores of worshipers jumped to their feet after
his comments, also broadcast on Egyptian television, and erupted into chants of
"Arm us, arm us, to Syria, to Syria!"

Lebanon Spillover

The tension has also led to a rise in
violence in Lebanon, where Shiites, Sunnis and Christians each make up roughly
a third of the population of 4.3 million people. Groups clashed in the northern
city of Tripoli, most recently this month, and rockets launched from Syria fell
on Shiite areas in Lebanon.

Lebanon's army leadership urged restraint
last night following the killing of four people in a remote Bekaa Vally area
close to the Syrian border. The victims included three Shiites and a Turk with
a Shiite mother, the Daily Star reported.

Gunmen fanned out in the region following the
killings, that show how Shiite-Sunni tensions have spilled over from the Syria
crisis. The army, in a statement carried by the official National News Agency,
called on residents to "transcend their injuries" and said it won't allow
anyone to exploit the incident to "strike national unity."

Risk Premium

The chaos in Syria is already weighing on the
economy of Lebanon, whose modern history is marred by sectarian conflicts.
Growth, which averaged 8 percent from 2007 to 2010, won't exceed 2 percent in 2013,
Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi said in a June 5 interview. The risk premium
investors demand to hold Lebanon's debt over U.S. Treasuries surged in the past
four weeks to 467 on June 14, the highest since September last year, according
to JP Morgan Chase & Co. data.

Lebanon's benchmark BLOM Stock Index (BLOM) fell for a sixth day today, declining
0.1 percent. The measure dropped 2.7 percent last week, the biggest weekly
slide since December 2011.

Arabic for "Party of God," Hezbollah, is the
only group that refused to disband following the end of Lebanon's 1975-1990
civil war, swelling from a small militia in 1982 to the most powerful political
group in the country with seats in parliament and ministers in the cabinet in Beirut .

Hezbollah says it needs its arsenal of
weapons to defend against Israeli attacks. It spearheaded the fight against
Israel's 18-year occupation of an enclave in south Lebanon. Israel withdrew in
2000, a move Hezbollah claimed as a victory. The group also fought an
inconclusive war against Israel in 2006, earning popularity among Sunnis as
well as Shiites.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah
has linked the group's involvement in Syria with its resistance narrative. He
called the fighting part of a broader struggle against Israel, saying Hezbollah
"won't keep silent and watch its back break."

Loyal Fighters

In funerals this month for fighters who died
in Syria, Hezbollah officials repeated that message, while members of the group
say they are not fighting a sectarian war.

"No one should consider the al-Qusair
achievement as a victory for Shiites against Sunnis," said Hezbollah lawmaker
Hussein al-Moussawi in Nabi Sheet on June 5, according to a transcript of his
comments e-mailed by Hezbollah. He said it was a victory against the
Zionist-Western plot targeting Syria.

Syrian opposition groups, which the U.S.
government will supply with small arms and ammunition, say Hezbollah is
mobilizing its fighters along with Syrian troops outside Aleppo in the north
for a push into the city, which unlike al-Qusair, is far from the borders of
Lebanon.

One of the consequences of Hezbollah's
engagement in Syria is the possibility that Lebanese Shiites who work in Gulf
countries and send money back home would be expelled, said Peter Harling, project director with the
Middle East Program of the International Crisis Group think tank.

Dire Impact

"It's happening on a small scale, but you
could have an exodus of Lebanese Shiites who are present in the Gulf in large
numbers, making a lot of money which they send home," he said in a phone
interview. "This can have a very dire economic impact on the Shiites in
Lebanon."

The crisis in Syria has also deepened
tensions between the Western-backed March 14 group and the Hezbollah-led March
8 group, which dominates the caretaker government of Najib Mikati .

What is Hezbollah "doing in the alleys of
al-Qusair and amid the rubble of its houses and buildings?" former Prime
Minister Fouad Siniora, who heads the Future Movement in the March 14 bloc,
said in a June 7 statement. "What is Hezbollah doing to Lebanon and the
Lebanese, to the Arabs and Muslims?"

For
now, the group is stuck on its side of the sectarian divide. Hezbollah won't
change its position on Syria or give up support for Assad government, leader
Nasrallah said in a June 14 speech. "The alternative in Syria is chaos," he
said.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, was created by the United Nations, with the adoption of Security Council Resolution 425 and 426 on 19 March 1978, to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon which Israel had invaded five days prior, restore international peace and security, and help the Government of Lebanon restore its effective authority in the area.

The first UNIFIL troops were deployed in the area on 23 March 1978; these troops were reassigned from other UN peacekeeping operations in the area (namely the United Nations Emergency Force and the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force Zone).

During the occupation, UNIFIL's function was mainly to provide humanitarian aid.
UNIFIL's mandate is renewed by United Nations Security Council annually. Current mandate expires on 31 August 2013

TEL AVIV // Allegations that Israel's wealthiest family engaged in business dealings with Iran in violation of a US ban have embarrassed the Israeli government and spurred controversy in a country that views Iran as its chief enemy.

Topic Iran Israel United States
Last week, the Ofer Brothers Group, an Israeli conglomerate with interests ranging from shipping to oil, chips and banking, was one of seven international companies that the US State Department said would be hit with American sanctions for trade with Iran.

According to the allegations, a Singaporean subsidiary of the Ofer family's business empire sold an oil tanker valued at US$8.65 million (Dh31.5m) in September to a front company that then sold it to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines. The sale was in violation of US sanctions imposed last year on Iran's energy sector.

The affair has shed an unfavourable light on Israel, which for years has insisted that tougher international economic sanctions be imposed on Iran in a bid to curtail its nuclear armament. As recently as last week, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said in a speech before a joint session of the US Congress that "time is running out" on stopping Iran's nuclear ambitions and lambasted some nations for failing to make a bigger effort on the issue.

But the US sanctions on the Ofer family have exposed the Israeli government's incompetence in enforcing such policies at home and have raised questions about Israel's own commitment to battling Iran's nuclear ambitions, commentators said.

Yossi Melman of the Israeli newspaper Haaretz wrote that Israel's approach was "hypocritical and self-righteous". He added: "Israel preaches to the whole world about the need for sanctions on Iran, while itself doing nothing about them."

According to Melman, at least 200 Israel-based companies have indirect trade ties with Iran. Those include investments in the Iranian energy industry, which is the country's main source of income and is believed to funnel funds to the nuclear programme, he said.

Such indirect dealings have included the agreement of Israel's Airport Authority to buy equipment from Germany's Siemens worth 150 million shekels (Dh160m), despite Siemens's extensive business ties in Iran. Furthermore, the Israel Electric Corporation has awarded a 500 million-shekel contract to Haldor Topsoe for air-pollution filters even as the Danish company builds Iranian refineries worth billions of dollars, Melman wrote.

Yuval Shany, a law professor at the Jerusalem-based Hebrew University, told the newspaper that the US has "much tougher" laws than does Israel on forbidding trade activities with countries regarded as enemies. He said that Israel's ban on trade with enemy states is unclear in what kind of businesses it includes, therefore casting doubt on whether the Ofer family actually violated Israeli law.

With the sanctions, the Ofer family and its Singaporean subsidiary, Tanker Pacific, would be barred from obtaining financing from the Export-Import Bank of the United States, securing loans that are more than $10 million from American financial institutions or receiving US export licences.

The Ofer family, whose net worth has been estimated by Forbes magazine at $10.3 billion, has insisted that it did not know of the sale of the tanker, which was sold to a third party before being transferred to Iran. But unidentified sources close to the family have been quoted by newspapers as saying that Israeli authorities had given permission for Tanker Pacific's vessels to anchor in Iran.

Nevertheless, on Monday, the government distanced itself from the affair, with Mr Netanyahu's office denying ever authorising the tanker sale or having prior knowledge about it.

In the meantime, the Ofer family's version of events continued to face questions amid Israeli reports that at least eight ships belonging to companies owned by the group are also alleged to have docked in Iranian ports to load and offload cargo in recent years.

Iran itself has vigorously denied having economic ties with the Ofer conglomerate or any other Israeli firm.

Despite Israel and Iran viewing each other as arch foes, the episode has been a reminder of the relations that existed between the two countries before the 1979 Islamic revolution which forced Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi into exile amid discontent with his authoritarian rule.

While the Shah did not officially recognise Israel, Israel had for years kept a permanent delegation in Tehran to serve as an unofficial embassy. Israel had also drawn a considerable portion of its oil supplies from Iran, with which it had also created a joint pipeline that allowed Iranian oil to be transported to European markets.

The two countries also had secret military links that Israeli experts believed to have been wide-ranging during the Shah's regime. Despite Israel viewing Iran as an enemy state following the 1979 revolution, the country in 1985 also took part in the so-called Iran-Contra Affair. In what became a major political scandal, the then US president, Ronald Reagan, tried to win the release of seven American hostages held by Iranian-sponsored militants in Lebanon by secretly authorising Israel to sell weapons to Iran in violation of an arms embargo.

The Israeli Palestinian conflict is an often misunderstood political
battleground where facts are mixed with opinion, perference, and
prejudice. There's so much confusion around the conflict that we want to
bring light to what is truth and what is myth. What issues are actually
standing in the way of bringing peace between the Israelis and
Palestinians? How does their fight over land complicate the conflict?
And what role to political leaders like Yasser Arafat and Ehud Barak
play along with organizations like UNRWA? These are questions we uncover
in these 10 myths that are preventing peace in Palestine and Israel.

Russian S-300 systems to materialize in Syria?

The events around Syria have clearly defined the balance of power on the international arena. The United States is very close to achieving its goals, the main one of which is to replace the current regime of President Assad. Israel, according to the press, was able to convince Russia to freeze the deliveries of air defense systems to official Syrian authorities, and the U.S. announced that it would begin to supply weapons to Syrian rebels.

Last week, British newspaper The Sunday Times published a sensational piece of news saying that the Russian contract to supply S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems to Syria would be suspended. The publication referred to a senior government source, who said that President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu made the decision in mid-May, during their official meeting in Sochi. According to The Sunday Times and its anonymous source, Moscow dropped the plans to sell S-300 systems fearing that modern high-precision weapons would fall into the wrong hands. Israel is a home to many immigrants from Russia and the CIS countries. The Russian side does not want S-300 systems to be used against civilian aircraft that fly from Ben-Gurion airport, says a source.

A few days ago, Israeli media reprinted the story that originally appeared in the London-based newspaper Al-Quds al-Arabi about the delivery of Russian air defense systems to Syria. The article said that four divisional S-300 systems, together with the group of military advisers had already been delivered to Syria. According to other sources, such as the Commander of Israeli Air Force, Major-General Amir Eshel, the Russian-made complexes have

not been delivered to Syria.

Speaking at a conference in Herzliya, Amir Eshel also said that in case of war, Israel would have to win the campaign within a few days. This can be achieved if Israel uses all of its military power. During the Second Lebanon War, Israel used a small fraction of its potential, but in the next armed conflict, the country will need to use all available means, the official said.

Numerous speculations in the press around the S-300 can be considered as a part of the media war. Observers note that should Assad receive the promised air defense systems from Russia, the balance of forces in the region will change drastically. At any rate, S-300 systems are not likely to help the Syrian regime in the struggle against rebel groups, who continue to wage a brutal war against government troops.

Israeli website Ynet denied reports saying that the agreement on the S-300 was reached by Putin and Netanyahu. Most likely, the Russians will kill the clock without bringing the deal to the end and use the S-300 as a trump card, the publication wrote.

The contract with Syria for the purchase of advanced air defense systems in the amount of $800 million was signed in 2010, shortly before the outbreak of the civil war in the country. Afterwards, Moscow has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment on military supplies to Damascus. "Russia has no plans to sell S-300 to Syria. Russia sold them a long time ago. Russia signed contracts and completes deliveries in accordance with those documents, providing the Syrians with anti-aircraft technologies," Mignews.com quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The debate about the arms contract between Moscow and Damascus worsened after Israeli air force struck Syrian military targets. Local news agencies previously reported that Israel conducted at least two air strikes on Syria. According to Western intelligence, the Israeli air force destroyed a batch of missiles that was supposed to be delivered to Hezbollah. Israel also attacked a research center near Damascus, local media said. About 300 Syrian soldiers were killed. The Arab League condemned the Israeli action. As Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil al-Arabi said, the Israeli aggression was a violation of international principles and laws that came threatening the stability and security of the entire region.

The official Damascus warned to immediately respond to any new attack from Israel. Soon there were rumors of the Syrian army deploying ground-to-ground missiles that could reach the Israeli capital. At the same time, Damascus increased military activity in the Golan area. Recently, Deputy Prime Minister of the Syrian government Qadri Jamil announced the start of recruitment of volunteers to carry out operations on the Golan Heights. Syria decided to refrain from launching a full-scale war with Israel, as the country is too much preoccupied with the struggle against rebels.

Either way, the Kremlin's position on Syria remains unchanged. The Russian leadership is opposed to assisting the armed Syrian opposition. At the same time, Russia refrains from concluding new arms contracts with the government of Bashar al-Assad. Obviously, Moscow does not intend to take any drastic steps in the field of foreign policy in the Middle East that could break the fragile balance of forces in the region.

Operation "Eager Lion"

The civil war in Syria, Russia's position was from the beginning why not mix, but closely monitoring the situation through thousands of agents in the field, the ELINT equipment on board naval vessels in the port of Tartus, the satellite images, etc.. ", said Valentin Vasilescu, aviation pilot, former deputy commander of Otopeni military airport in military science Military Studies Academy in Bucharest, graduated 1992.

"Basically, Russia is the only superpower who knows perfectly everything that moves in Syria and can respond effectively. Balance victory began to incline towards President Bashar al-Assad, with so-called disaster recorded Liberation Army encirclement of Syria and conquer operation of Damascus, ending February 5, 2012. After successful counterattack in March 2012 followed a comprehensive aero-terrestrial offensive operations during May and early June, waged by the Syrian army backed Hezbollah for border security, targeting rebel supply lines of the recruits, weapons and ammunition.

Taking the initiative by the national army of Syria, President Bashar al-Assad true, and triggering general offensive could take place only under the protection of the Russian fleet deployed in the Mediterranean and has its base in the Syrian port of Tartus. In a previous article, I described in detail that in parallel with the land battles in the Mediterranean held a more complex war between Russian and American fleet with strategic repositioning maneuvers extremely risky, after all the rules modern military art. Russian naval group role being to prevent submarines and destroyers Sixth Fleet of the U.S., sent to the eastern Mediterranean to launch cruise missiles against Syria in order to thwart the government military offensive.

Errors committed by Israeli aviation attack 3/4 to 4/5 May 2013 in Syria and the EU embargo, allowed Moscow to enter into the equation S-300PMU2 systems that guarantee that Israel will not intervene in Syria European modeled Libya. Although S-300 missiles are still in Syria, if they, the Russians can make them operable in a few hours can make. Being only 4 batteries just launched the first salvo of missiles S-300 32 has no significance. Missiles that equip the S-300PMU2 are not autonomous, but were going to fight in an integrated AA complex, consisting of cameras and various electronic warfare sensors, cooperating with other short and medium-range AA. The sensors S-300PMU2 system that creates continuous radar field, batteries S-200, S-125, SA-6 Kub, S-75 ("sockets" before jamming Western) "see" targets, launches and down. Or, in these sensors President Bashar al-Assad was referring when he said that some of the equipment S-300 have already arrived in Syria.

We already know that the result was the destruction of ground offensive centers in Qusair resistance (by introducing rebels weapons, ammunition and recruits in Lebanon) and Daraa (located 10 km from the southern border with Jordan and 30 kilometers east of the with Israel) . Simultaneously therewith, the army loyal to President Bashar al-Assad has secured a strip of border with Turkey, 50 km long, located in the northern governorate of Latakia (on the Mediterranean coast) that the rebels were supplied with arms and ammunition. By this last maneuver, a division of Islamist rebels consisting of about 15,000 fighters, ordered in rural Hamah governorate, north of Qusair (city of Homs), was isolated from another division rebel operating in neighboring Idlib Governorate.

On May 27, 2013, Republican Senator John McCain, accompanied by Syrian rebel army commander, General Idris Salem, crossed the border from Turkey to Syria to meet with fighters brigade led by Mohammad Nour. The day before McCain and Idris had met in the Turkish city of Gaziantep, the Islamist commanders Qusair devices, Homs, Hamah, Idlib, Aleppo, Daraa, and near Damascus. McCain has had talks with officials in Ankara, then visiting American contingent operating Patriot missile system to Incirlik military base. The trip was organized by U.S. Senator SETE (Syrian Emergency Task Force), an American NGO that supports the Syrian opposition. One of the important conclusions drawn by McCain, was that Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan began dismantling assembly centers Islamist mercenaries in Turkey and refuse to allow transit of weapons and ammunition to Syria. Coincidence or not, on May 30, 2013, in downtown Istanbul, broke "spontaneous" protest movement against Prime Minister Erdogan, who is amplified in all patterns "Arab Spring."

On June 9, 2013, the Syrian army loyal to President Bashar al-Assad launched offensive operations "Northern Storm" aimed at issuing Governorate Aleppo in northwestern Syria. Armed resistance is expected as shown by the 25,000 Islamist rebels be stronger and longer lasting than that of Qusair. configuration of the land in the surroundings of Aleppo favor the defenders, because it is located in a depression surrounded by dominant height and distance to the border with Turkey is 20-30 km ( both the north and the west).

One of the principles of military science recommends execution of applications, a State bordering on civil war only if the planner wants to intervene in the conflict in support of either party. Taman now that the rebels are on the verge of being defeated by Bashar al-Assad, the U.S. military begins within the Jordan application "Eager Lion" lasting 12 days, involving 8,000 troops from Arab countries, the U.S. (4500) and England. Expeditionary Unit 26, formed around the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge, landed on May 14, 2013 in the Israeli port of Eilat, where he landed 3rd Battalion Marines equipped with LAV-25 AAVP-7A1 and 226 squadron support equipped with the V-22 Osprey. Besides the two units, the U.S. military currently participates in the application with a battery MIM-104 Patriot, units of land troops and an unidentified number of F-16 squadrons.
