BRIDGEPORT, N.J. - NASCAR driver Jason Leffler died after an accident Wednesday night in a heat race at a dirt car event at Bridgeport Speedway.

The 37-year-old Leffler, a two-time winner on the NASCAR Nationwide Series who had the nickname "LefTurn" above the driver's side window on his race cars, was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m., New Jersey State Police said.

"NASCAR extends its thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Jason Leffler who passed away earlier this evening," NASCAR said in a statement. "For more than a decade, Jason was a fierce competitor in our sport and he will be missed."

After losing his NASCAR ride, Leffler had been racing dirt car events most of this year, including the 410 Sprint Car race Wednesday that promised a $7,000 prize to the winner at the 0.625-mile, high-banked dirt oval. On Sunday, Leffler finished last at Pocono in his lone NASCAR Sprint Cup start of the year.

From Long Beach, Calif., Leffler made 423 starts in NASCAR's three national series, but won just the two Nationwide races and one Truck Series event in a career that began in 1999. He also made three IndyCar Series starts, finishing 17th in the 2000 Indianapolis 500.

Leffler's last full NASCAR season was 2011, when he ran the entire Nationwide schedule for Turner Motorsports. He finished sixth in the standings that season and hadn't had a steady NASCAR ride since.

Although he never made it at the NASCAR Sprint Cup level, Leffler ran almost the entire 2001 season for Chip Ganassi Racing and ran 19 races in 2005 for Joe Gibbs Racing in the car now driven by Denny Hamlin.

Leffler is survived by 5-year-old son Charlie Dean.

"Really sad for Jason Leffler and his family," NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski said on Twitter. "Thinking about his little boy."

Jason Leffler, a versatile driver who won championships in open-wheel divisions and attempted at least one full season in each of NASCAR's three national series, died Wednesday night after a crash in a 410 sprint car race at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey.

Leffler, 37, was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m., the New Jersey State Police said. Sgt. Adam Grossman told USA TODAY Sports that Leffler had to be extricated from the car after striking a wall around 8:30 p.m. He was transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

He was running in second place in the first heat race of the program at the 0.625-mile, high-banked dirt oval when his car flipped several times on the front straightaway, according to eyewitness Chris Taitt, 40, of West Deptford, N.J. Taitt said Leffler's car hit the wall twice and "then it was flopping all over."

After state police arrived on the scene, the track announced the rest of the races had been canceled.

Leffler made 73 starts in the Sprint Cup Series, finishing last in his final event after completing eight laps Sunday at Pocono Raceway. He won twice in the Nationwide Series and once in the Camping World Truck Series.

The Long Beach, Calif., native, who was affectionately known as "lefTurn" and had the nickname stenciled above his driver's side window, leaves behind a 5-year-old son, Charlie.

Leffler started his career as an open-wheel star who won three consecutive USAC Midget championships from 1997-99. Following the path of former USAC star Tony Stewart, he signed with Joe Gibbs Racing for the Nationwide Series in 2000.

After finishing 20th in points with three pole positions and four top 10s in his rookie season, Leffler moved into NASCAR's premier Cup Series with Chip Ganassi Racing. He lasted only one year after failing to qualify for five of 36 races in 2001.

Leffler moved to the Camping World Truck Series for two years, scoring his first NASCAR national series victory at Dover International Speedway in 2003. He began dabbling in Cup again, making 10 starts for Haas CNC Racing that season.

In 2004, he earned his first Nationwide Series win and scored 17 top 10s in 27 starts with Haas CNC.

That earned him his second shot at Cup in 2005 as Joe Gibbs Racing expanded to a third car with FedEx sponsorship. Leffler, though, didn't last the season, being fired by the team after 21 races when he was ranked 35th in points and had failed to qualify for the Coca-Cola 600. Denny Hamlin took over the No. 11 car late in the season.

Leffler raced full time in Nationwide from 2006-11, earning his final national series win at Indianapolis Raceway Park in 2007 when he finished a career-high third in points.

He made 11 starts in Sprint Cup over the past six seasons.

A statement from NASCAR said the sanctioning body "extends its thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Jason Leffler who passed away earlier this evening. For more than a decade, Jason was a fierce competitor in our sport and he will be missed."

"We are very saddened at the passing of Jason Leffler," Indianapolis Motor Speedway chief operating officer Doug Boles said in a statement. "He was one of the most versatile race drivers in America, showing his talent by competing in the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400. Jason was a terrific guy who always had time for everyone. Our deepest sympathies are extended to his entire family, team and fans."

Leffler raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 2000 and the Brickyard 400 in 2001, 2003-05 and '08.

Boy Genius Diagnosed With Autism Has IQ Higher than Einstein

BY CAROL KURUVILLA / NEW YORK DAILY NEWSFRIDAY, MAY 10, 2013, 7:59 PM

Kristine Barnett noticed that her little boy Jacob - whom doctors had tagged as autistic - seemed to have a fascination with patterns. So she took him out of his school's special ed program and let him study the things he's passionate about. Now Jacob is on his way to winning a Nobel Prize.
As a child, doctors told Jacob Barnett's parents that their autistic son would probably never know how to tie his shoes.

But experts say the 14-year-old Indiana prodigy has an IQ higher than Einstein's and is on the road to winning a Nobel Prize. He's given TedX talks and is working toward a master's degree in quantum physics.

The key, according to mom Kristine Barnett, was letting Jacob be himself - by helping him study the world with wide-eyed wonder instead of focusing on a list of things he couldn't do.

Diagnosed with moderate to severe autism at the age of 2, Jacob spent years in the clutches of a special education system that didn't understand what he needed. His teachers at school would try to dissuade Kristine from hoping to teach Jacob any more than the most basic skills.

Jacob was struggling with that sort of instruction - withdrawing deeper into himself and refusing to speak with anyone.

But Kristine noticed that when he was not in therapy, Jacob was doing "spectacular things" on his own.

"He would create maps all over our floor using Q-tips. They would be maps of places we've visited and he would memorize every street," Kristine told the BBC .

One day, his mom took him stargazing. A few months later, they visited a planetarium where a professor was giving a lecture. Whenever the teacher asked questions, Jacob's little hand shot up and he began to answer questions - easily understanding complicated theories about physics and the movement of planets.

Jacob was just 3-1/2 years old.

His mom realized that Jacob might need something that the standard special education curriculum just wasn't giving him.

So Kristine decided to take on the job herself.

"For a parent, it's terrifying to fly against the advice of the professionals," Kristine writes in her memoir , "The Spark: A Mother's Story of Nurturing Genius." "But I knew in my heart that if Jake stayed in special ed, he would slip away."

The Hamilton County mom, a nursery school teacher, decided to take Jacob out of school and prepare him for mainstream kindergarten herself.

Jacob thrived under his mom's personal attention. She let him explore the things he wanted to explore. He studied patterns and shadows and stars. At the same time, she made sure that he enjoyed "normal" childhood pleasures - softball, picnics - along with other kids his age.

"I operate under a concept called 'muchness,'" Kristine said. "Which is surrounding children with the things they love - be it music, or art, whatever they're drawn to and love."

By the time he was 11 years old, Jacob was ready for college. He's now studying condensed matter physics at the Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis.

His IQ rounds out to 170 - higher than that of Albert Einstein. He's been working on his own theory of relativity. Professors at Princeton's Institute for Advance Study were impressed.

"The theory that he's working on involves several of the toughest problems in astrophysics and theoretical physics," astrophysics Professor Scott Tremaine wrote to the family in an email.

"Anyone who solves these will be in line for a Nobel Prize."

Warner Bros. has snatched up movie rights to Jacob's story. Kristine and her son have embarked on a European book tour, but hope to have some time to rest by July.

"My goal for the summer is just to give him a few weeks off," Kristine told the Indianapolis Monthly . "The last time he had that was when he came up with the alternative theory to the Big Bang. So who knows what he'll create?"

Christopher Crist thought he was having a routine visit to the dentist but when he woke up, he noticed that he no longer had any teeth left in his mouth.

21-Year-Old Christopher Crist said he was only going to the dentist to have three teeth extracted when he woke up with a pair of gums

Apparently this is not the first time patients left with far less teeth than expected. People who went to the 'Amazing Family Dental' office in Indianapolis said there are other horror stories of the dentist taking out way more teeth than requested. In one case, a little boy had 32 teeth removed for no apparent reason.

An Indiana dentist reportedly removed patients' teeth without permission. Multiple patients have filed complaints against Amazing Family Dental for removing more teeth than planned. One man reports that, instead of pulling one or two bad teeth, the dentist removed all of his teeth.

Christopher Crist of Indianapolis went to the clinic to have three bad teeth removed. When the procedure was complete, he realized that all of his teeth were gone. Every single one. When he arrived at the clinic, Crist had 32 teeth in his mouth. The 21-year-old autistic man is disturbed as he is concerned that he looks like a "freak" without his teeth.

Through the eyes of a young girl suffering from mental illness, CALDERA glimpses into a world of psychosis and explores a world of ambiguous reality and the nature of life and death.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
CALDERA is inspired by my father's struggle with schizoaffective disorder. In states of delusion, my father has danced on the rings of Saturn, spoken with angels, and fled from his demons. He has lived both a fantastical and haunting life, but one that's invisible to the most of us. In our differing understanding of reality, we blindly mandate his medication, assimilate him to our marginalizing culture, and entirely misinterpret him for all he is worth. CALDERA aims to not only venerate my father, but all brilliant minds forged in the haunted depths of psychosis.

HISTORY
CALDERA was helmed by Evan Viera (Director/Composer/Co-Writer) and Chris Bishop (Co-writer/Animation Supervisor/Story Artist) and was produced at Hampshire College. CALDERA was the first film to go through the Bit Films Incubator Program, where founder and professor Chris Perry (co-producer/editor) invites orphaned independent films to be made on campus with the College's students and resources. MANY students and industry professionals generously donated their time to the making of this film. See below for the full credits list.

In co-production with Bit Films and Flicker Dreams Productions

Woman was inside gas station paying for items when attacker went into vehicle, police said

A man snuck into a woman's van while she was inside a Hammond, Ind., gas station paying for her items last week and later abducted and sexually assaulted her, Chicago police said Thursday.
The 26-year-old woman was at the Shell station, at 10770 S. Indianapolis Blvd., on March 22 when the attacker hid inside her minivan. He revealed himself as she drove away, police said, and forced her to drive to "various locations."
One of those locations was an alley in the 9500 block of South Colfax Avenue, where police said the man dragged the victim into the back of her van and sexually assaulted her. He then forced her to drive to an ATM machine at East 103rd Street and South Torrence Avenue and made her withdraw cash.
The man left the woman in her vehicle in the vicinity of West 89th Street and South Lowe Avenue, police said in a community alert.
Women at the filling station on Thursday said they were shocked to hear the report. Many said they try to remain aware of their surroundings and take extra precautions.
"As soon as I get out of my car I lock my door," said Carol Sanford. "Even if I pump gas I always make sure I only lock, when I press the unlock button, I only unlock my driver door. It doesn't unlock the whole door unless I press it twice."
An employee at the gas station said surveillance cameras recorded the man checking several car doors before getting into the woman's van.
The woman said her attacker was a black man between the ages of 30 and 33 years. He stood between 5 feet, 8 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighed between 160 and 180 pounds, authorities said. He was last seen wearing a black ski mask on his face with a rectangle-shaped opening for his eyes, a long-sleeved, red Chicago Bulls shirt, black and gray jeans, and a dark blue or black varsity-style jacket with horizontal stripes on the sleeves. The jacket had white lettering on the front and a design in white on the back.
The attacker implied to his victim that he had a weapon, possibly a knife, but never displayed it, police said.

Danny Webber is 74 years old and found out he is dying from a terminal cancer. The elderly US Navy vet still had one more wish to fulfill. He wanted to meet Andrew Luck from the Indianapolis Colts.
"One of my last Sundays. I never dreamed this would be one of them."
