Once CNN's Jake Tapper actually did obtain a real email , and the White House subsequently released the actual email chain , Karl's "emails" were revealed to be summaries, provided by a source, which contained invented quotes and significant omissions . On Thursday night's CBS Evening News , Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett reported that a Republican source was behind the invented quotes, which were also leaked to CBS News' Sharyl Attkisson , a fact that Karl did not disclose in his original report, or his followup, and which Attkisson did not disclose, either. Anchor Scott Pelley began by noting that, at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey, President Obama "called for tighter security for U.S. diplomatic facilities to prevent an attack like the one in Benghazi, Libya, last year that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans." Pelley added, "Of course, Benghazi has become a political controversy. Republicans claim that the Administration watered down the facts in talking points that were given to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice for television appearances while Mr. Obama was running for reelection. Republicans on Capitol Hill claim that they had found proof of this in White House e-mails that they leaked to reporters last week. Well, it turns out some of the quotes in those e-mails were wrong. Major Garrett is at the White House for us tonight. Major?" CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett then reported on the source of those invented quotes, and offered his analysis of their effect on the Republican narrative. "Scott, Republicans have claimed that the State Department under Hillary Clinton was trying to protect itself from criticism," Major began. "The White House released the real e-mails late yesterday and here's what we found when we compared them to the quotes that had been provided by Republicans. One e-mail was written by Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes. On Friday, Republicans leaked what they said was a quote from Rhodes. 'We must make sure that the talking points reflect all agency equities, including those of the State Department, and we don't want to undermine the FBI investigation.'" "But it turns out, in the actual e-mail Rhodes did not mention the State Department," he continued. "It read 'We need to resolve this in a way that respects all the relevant equities, particularly the investigation.' Republicans also provided what they said was a quote from an e-mail written by State Department Spokesman Victoria Nuland. The Republican version notes Nuland discussing 'the penultimate point is a paragraph talking about all the previous warnings provided by the Agency (CIA) about al-Qaeda's presence and activities of al-Qaeda.'" "The actual e-mail from Nuland says 'the penultimate point could be abused by Members to beat the State Department for not paying attention to Agency warnings,'" Major said, adding "The CIA agreed with the concerns raised by the State Department, and revised the talking points to make them less specific than the CIA's original version, eliminating references to al Qaeda and affiliates, and earlier security warnings." Garrett concluded, "There is no evidence, Scott, the White House orchestrated these changes." ABC News has, thus far, defended Karl's reporting as "consistent with" the actual emails, and has not addressed the attribution issue, except to say that ""Karl's report could have been even clearer" that the reporting was not based on the actual emails. This analysis by Major Garrett, as respected and objective a journalist as there is, contradicts that notion. It requires officials to make public any significant sources of income. An adviser to Mrs. Clinton, Philippe Reines, said that Ms. Abedin was not obligated to do so. The disclosure of the agreement that Ms. Abedin made with the State Department comes as her husband, former Representative Anthony D. Weiner , a Democrat, prepares for a mayoral run in New York City. Politico reported the arrangement on Thursday afternoon. Ms. Abedin declined a request for an interview, but the picture that emerges from interviews and records suggests a situation where the lines were blurred between Ms. Abedin's work in the high echelons of one of the government's most sensitive executive departments and her role as a Clinton family insider. While continuing her work at the State Department, in the latter half of 2012, she also worked for Teneo, a strategic consulting firm, which was founded by Doug Band, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton. Teneo has advised corporate clients like Coca-Cola and MF Global, the collapsed brokerage firm run by Jon S. Corzine, a former governor of New Jersey. At the same time, Ms. Abedin served as a consultant to the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation and worked in a personal capacity for Mrs. Clinton as she prepared to transition out of her job as secretary of state. It is not clear what role Mrs. Clinton played in approving the arrangement. Some good-government groups have been critical of such situations, saying public employees' loyalty should be solely to the public and their government work, rather than private firms and figures. Ms. Abedin reached her new working arrangement in June 2012, when she returned from maternity leave, quietly leaving her position as deputy chief of staff and becoming a special government employee, which is essentially a consultant. A State Department official said that change freed her from the requirement that she disclose her private earnings for the rest of the year on her financial disclosure forms. Still, during that period, she continued to be identified publicly in news reports as Mrs. Clinton's deputy chief of staff. Officials in the State Department and Clinton circles seem especially sensitive about the arrangement, and no one would speak about it on the record. Earlier this month, Mr. Weiner released a copy of the couple's 2012 tax return showing that they had income of more than $490,000. But when pressed on the matter, Mr. Weiner declined to discuss what, if any, income Ms. Abedin derived from work done outside the State Department. An associate of Ms. Abedin's said on Thursday that the arrangement allowed her to work from her home in New York, rather than at the State Department's headquarters in Washington, and to spend more time with her child and husband. She earned approximately $135,000 from the department during 2012. It is not clear how much Ms. Abedin was paid by Mrs. Clinton privately, or from the Clinton Foundation and Teneo. The Clintons have described Ms. Abedin as a surrogate daughter to them. Social media users Neil Harkins, 35, and Dean Liddle, 28, were given nine-month jail terms, suspended for 15 months. In February this year, two days after the 20th anniversary of the toddler's murder, they put photos on Facebook and Twitter respectively, which purported to depict Jon Venables and Robert Thompson as adults. Venables and Thompson were aged 10 when they killed two-year-old James in Bootle, Merseyside in 1993. Liddle and Harkins admitted breaching a January 2001 injunction, that was binding on the whole world and imposed before Venables and Thompson were released and given new identities in June that year. The injunction prohibits the solicitation or publication of any information purporting to identify their physical appearance, whereabouts, movements or new identities. Sir John Thomas, President of the Queen's Bench Division, and Mr Justice Tugendhat said Liddle, of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, and Harkins, of Bridlington, East Yorkshire, knew what they were doing was wrong and it was no excuse that others were doing it. Sir John said that the court would consider a custodial sentence, not only to punish but also to deter others, but would take the exceptional course of suspending it in this case. He warned there was very little prospect of an offender avoiding a very substantial and immediate custodial sentence if there was any similar publication in future. Sir John said Harkins, a house husband, and graphic designer Liddle had both removed the offending pictures very quickly and apologised. He added that a fine would be wholly inappropriate to the gravity of what was a serious contempt and an unprecedented case. He also said the penalty had to make clear the determination of the court to protect the potentially numerous people at risk and the importance of upholding the rule of law. The judges had heard Harkins had 141 friends on Facebook and his post had been shared 20,000 times. The father-of-three accepted he had been extremely foolish and had shown genuine remorse. Liddle, who had 915 followers on Twitter, undertook various charitable activities, the court was told, and an immediate custodial sentence would have major consequences for his profoundly deaf son. Harkins said "no comment" as he left the Royal Courts of Justice. Liddle said: "I am just going to go home and see my son." The action against the two defendants was brought by Attorney General Dominic Grieve. He said the public interest required the injunction's enforcement to mitigate the "very real risk of serious physical harm or death" to anyone who might be identified, whether correctly or incorrectly, as being either of the killers. After the ruling, Mr Grieve said: "An internet posting takes seconds but can have major consequences. "These people were fully aware that there is an injunction in place which prevents publication of any images or information claiming to identify anyone as Jon Venables or Robert Thompson, yet they carried on. "It has been in place for many years and applies to both media organisations and individuals. "It is irrelevant whether the postings in this case were of who they claimed to be. "The order is meant not only to protect Venables and Thompson but also those members of the public who have been incorrectly identified as being either of them."
