Bit fucked in the head if you ask me.....Don't make em' up, just post em'.....

Grinning and waving, 14 women who survived the horrors of World War II have paraded in an
unusual pageant, vying for the honour of being crowned Israel's first "Miss Holocaust Survivor".Billed by organisers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy.

In a country where millions have been touched by the Holocaust, many argued that judging aging women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive."It sounds totally macabre to me," said Colette Avital, chairwoman of Israel's leading Holocaust survivors' umbrella group.

"I am in favour of enriching lives, but a one-time pageant masquerading (survivors) with beautiful clothes is not what is going to make their lives more meaningful."

Pageant organiser Shimon Sabag rejected the criticism, saying the winners were chosen based on their personal stories of survival and rebuilding their lives after the war, and physical beauty was only a tiny part of the competition."They feel good together. They are having a good time and laughing in the rehearsals," said Sabag, director of Yad Ezer L'Haver, or Helping Hand,
which assists needy Holocaust survivors and organised the pageant."The fact that so many wanted to participate proves that it's a good idea."

Nearly 300 women from across Israel registered for the competition and contestants were whittled down to the 14 finalists who appeared on Thursday. The contest, part of Helping Hand's annual "cultural" night, included a lavish dinner and music at a Haifa reception hall.

Some 600 people attended, including two cabinet ministers, Moshe Kahlon and Yossi Peled, himself a Holocaust survivor.

The women, ranging in age from 74 to 97, clearly enjoyed themselves.

Wearing black dresses, earrings and necklaces, and sporting blue-and-white numbered sashes, they grinned and waved as they were introduced to the adoring audience. Music played as the contestants walked along a red carpet, introduced themselves and described their memories of World War II.

"I have the privilege to show the world that Hitler wanted to exterminate us and we are alive. We are also enjoying life. Thank God it's that way," said Esther Libber, a 74-year-old runner-up who fled her home in Poland as a child, hid in a forest and was rescued by a Polish woman. She said she lost her entire immediate family.

A four-judge panel consisting of three former beauty queens and a geriatric psychiatrist who specialises in treating Holocaust survivors chose the winner.Hava Hershkovitz, a soon-to-be 79-year-old, was banished from her home in Romania in 1941 and sent to a detention camp
in the Soviet Union for three years.Today, she lives in an assisted living home run by Helping Hand.

"This place is full of survivors. It puts us at the centre of attention so people will care. It's not easy at this age to be in a beauty contest, but we're all doing it to show that we're still here," the silver-haired Hershkovitz said.Wearing a glittering tiara, she was joined by her granddaughter, Keren Hazan.

"I'm very proud of her because she's the most beautiful woman in the room tonight," Hazan said.

In addition to the contestants' accounts of surviving Nazi ghettos and concentration camps, their later contributions to their communities were also considered, Sabag said.Physical appearance was maybe "10 per cent" of the criteria, he said, though a cosmetics company was
recruited to help the women dress up for the occasion."We always tell them to dress well and look good. To think positive and to take care of themselves," Sabag said.

"Always look at life with a smile and continue to live."

The thought that physical appearance could even remotely be a factor rubbed some the wrong way.

Avital, of the Holocaust survivors' umbrella group, criticised the cosmetics company, saying it was using Holocaust survivors in a cheap marketing stunt to promote their products."Why use a beauty contest to show that these people survived and that they're brave?" wondered Lili
Haber, a daughter of Holocaust survivors who heads an Israeli
organisation that assists survivors from Poland."I think it's awful. I think it's something a decent person shouldn't even think about."

The Holocaust, in which Nazi Germany oversaw the systematic slaughter of 6 million European Jews, plays a unique role in Israeli society. The country gained independence in the wake of the Holocaust, serving as a refuge for hundreds of thousands of people who survived the genocide.Nearly 200,000 aging survivors live in Israel today, and the country's annual

Holocaust Day is one of the most solemn occasions on the calendar.Restaurants and cinemas close, and the country comes to a standstill as sirens wail for two minutes.

Greek Neo-Nazi party demand from reporters to stand up (English subtitles)

Greek Neo-Nazi party leader warns 'traitors' to run -

Extreme-right Golden Dawn party savors unprecedented success in Sunday's general election by promising to rid Greece of illegal immigrants, branding journalists 'liars', warn all 'traitors' to run scared.

Greece sinks into the abyss, while neo-Nazis are celebrating - The neo-Nazi party won popular support in a way similar to how Hamas won popular support in Gaza and the Muslim Brotherhood is winning in Egypt: by filling a void that the government didn't.

By Sabby Mionis, Haaretz

Greeks went to the polls Sunday guided by fear, anger and insecurity. The result is a monstrosity that will lead to more fear, more anger and more insecurity.

The results of the Greek elections surprised everyone. The two traditionally large parties, New Democracy and Pasok, who have shared power since 1974, following a seven year dictatorship, struggled to get a mere combined total of 34% of the vote. This is a staggering failure for two parties who used to share about 85% of the vote. Greeks punished both mainstream parties who governed Greece for 38 years and are largely responsible for its financial collapse.

This was not the only surprise. The leftist party SYRIZA, which opposes the austerity measures, and organized strikes and demonstrations over the past two years, won a close second place with 17% of the vote, up from 4% in the 2009 elections. Its leader, Alexis Tsipras, a young populist who has never held a job and barely speaks English, is in favor of Greece playing hardball with its lenders by threatening not to repay its loans. This would be a dangerous gamble for a country that can't pay salaries and pensions at the end of the month without the support of the same lenders Mr. Tsipras is threatening.

A far more worrying surprise was the incredibly strong performance of the neo-Nazi party, Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn). Although the polls have been showing Golden Dawn entering Parliament by crossing the required 3% threshold, the 7% it won in Sunday's election has shocked the country's political system and most of the Greek people, who do not subscribe to its neo-Nazi ideology.

Golden Dawn won popular support in a way similar to how Hamas won popular support in Gaza and the Muslim Brotherhood is winning popular support in Egypt: by filling a void that the government didn't. They have been offering "security services" to Greeks living in neighborhoods heavily populated by illegal immigrants, where crime has gotten out of control. With its group of thugs, Golden Dawn escorts the elderly to ATM machines and violently attacks immigrants, legal or illegal.

It is not certain that everyone who voted for Golden Dawn fully grasped its agenda. The Greek people are not neo-Nazis, and it would be unfair to characterize them as such. Golden Dawn's leader, Nikos Mihaloliakos, gave a triumphant and Hitleresque speech Sunday which shocked Greeks - and the international media . He thanked his black shirt-wearing thugs and vowed to continue the struggle inside and "outside" the Parliament. "Those who betray this country - it's time for them to be afraid. We are coming," he said. Let's hope that "outside the Parliament" does not mean they will expand their violence against immigrants.

Apart from Pasok, the socialist party that paid the price for its gross mismanagement of the financial crisis, the big loser of yesterday's election is Andonis Samaras, the leader of the mainstream right-wing party New Democracy.

Samaras tried to tap the growing trend towards the extreme right, by recruiting extreme rightists into his party himself. Adonis Georgiadis, a populist anti-Semite and Makis Voridis, a former minister, joined Samaras' party a couple of months ago, after jumping ship from LAOS, a populist, nationalistic party founded by a politician known for his anti-Semitic views, George Karatzaferis.

This move probably cost LAOS its place in Parliament, but Voridis' presence has transformed the once-mainstream New Democracy into an extreme right-wing party, alienating many of its traditional supporters.

Voridis has a long history of founding fascist groups with neo-Nazi leanings, but has used his extensive family connections, the support of parts of the media, his charisma in front of the camera and his debating skills to cleanse his past and hide his present.

Samaras gamble on co-opting the extreme right failed miserably, but it has been a windfall for the far-right: his two neo-Nazis have probably been re-elected, adding two MPs to the 21 or 22 fascist MPs of Golden Dawn.

It is highly unlikely that a stable government can be formed anytime soon. The only possible coalition would be one of New Democracy, Pasok and Democratic Left, which won around 6% of the vote.

The most likely outcome will be a re-election in a month's time, according to the Greek constitution. If the three small liberal parties that together won 6.5% of the vote - but didn't make the 3% threshold separately - join forces, there is a good chance that the next round of elections will lead to a viable coalition government. These small parties share similar ideas for a smaller state, austerity measures and rapid privatizations.

But for now, Greece seems to be lost in the abyss.

Sabby Mionis was born in Athens and moved to Israel in 2006. Founder of Capital Management Advisors and active in Greek business life, he is a former president of Keren Hayesod (the United Israel Appeal) in Athens and now serves as on the UIA Executive and is co-founder of the Israel Center for Better Childhood.

Change of plan: George W. Bush has cancelled a visit to Geneva for a charity gala over fears he could be arrested on torture charges

Former U.S. President George W. Bush has cancelled a visit to Switzerland over fears he could have been arrested on torture charges.

Mr Bush was due to be the keynote speaker at a Jewish charity gala in Geneva on February 12.

But pressure has been building on the Swiss government to arrest him and open a criminal investigation if he enters the country.

Criminal complaints against Mr Bush alleging torture have been lodged in Geneva, court officials said.

Human rights groups said they had intended to submit a 2,500-page case against him in the Swiss city tomorrow for alleged mistreatment of suspected militants at Guantanamo Bay.

Left-wing groups have also called for a protest on the day of his visit, leading organisers at Keren Hayesod's annual dinner to cancel Mr Bush's participation on security grounds.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch and International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) said the cancellation was linked to growing moves told him accountable for the use of torture, including waterboarding.

He had admitted in his memoirs and TV interviews to ordering the use of the interrogation technique which simulates drowning.

Reed Brody, a lawyer for Human Rights Watch, said: 'He's avoiding the handcuffs.'

Protest: Mr Bush was due to be keynote speaker at Keren Hayesod's annual charity dinner, but organisers pulled out over security concerns

The action in Switzerland showed Mr Bush had reason to fear legal complaints against him if he travelled to countries that have ratified an international treaty banning torture, he said.

Mr Brody is a U.S.-trained lawyer who specialises in pursuing war crimes, including Chile's late dictator Augusto Pinochet and Chad's ousted president Hissene Habre.

Admission: Mr Bush defended the use of waterboarding in his memoir 'Decision Points' as key at avoiding a repeat of the September 11 attacks

Habre has been charged by Belgium with crimes against humanity and torture and is currently exiled in Senegal.

He said: 'President Bush has admitted ordering waterboarding which everyone considers to be a form of torture under international law.

'Under the Convention on Torture, authorities would have been obliged to open an investigation and either prosecute or extradite George Bush.'

Swiss judicial officials have said that the former president would still enjoy a certain diplomatic immunity as a former head of state.

Dominique Baettig, a member of the Swiss parliament from the People's Party, wrote to the Swiss federal government last week calling for his arrest if he came to the neutral country.

In his 'Decision Points' memoirs, Mr Bush strongly defended the use of waterboarding as key to preventing a repeat of the September 11 attacks on the U.S.

Most human rights experts consider the practice a form of torture, banned by the Convention on Torture.

Switzerland and the U.S. are among 147 countries that have ratified the 1987 treaty.

A group of selected Israelis takes part in Spencer Tunick's first mass nude shoot at Dead Sea, as curious bystanders hover nearby

Tunick said his aim is to deliver an environmental message highlighting the plight of the world's lowest and saltiest body of water, which is rapidly drying up.

A group of 1,200 Israelis especially selected to take part in Spencer Tunick's first mass nude shoot at the Dead Sea, arrived by buses overnight at the famous landmark on Saturday. The chosen location was not revealed until the moment of arrival so as to prevent religious officials or curious bystanders from disturbing the photo shoot.

The group of Israelis, consisting of both men and women ages 18 to 77, gathered on the beach around 1 am, awaiting the photo session to begin with the sunrise. When the sun finally came up, Tunick instructed a 1,000 Israelis to enter the salty water, as he photographed them floating in the Dead Sea.

A second photograph was taken as participants were told to stand along the edge of one lagoon, while the third and final photo displayed the group covered in mud. In the end, it was not the religious officials who tried to disrupt the photo shoot but in fact curious spectators, who were able to discover the secret location and attempted to get closer. Some even succeed to get a peek using light planes and parachutes.

Tunick told Israeli reports he had chosen to hold the photo shoot on Saturday so that no one would walk along the beach and see a naked person.
The media, including journalists from all over the world, were stationed a considerable distance away from the naked group of Israelis, as the photo shoot began.
Tunick said Wednesday he believes Israel is the only country in the Middle East with the religious freedom for one of his trademark mass shoots of nude volunteers. Despite his initial fears over such a project in Israel, he mentioned that he is not the first artist to deal with nudity in the country.

The famous visual artist claimed his is not a pioneer, but only following the footsteps of superb Israeli artists. Tunick insisted that the Dead Sea shoot was not about challenging the region's delicate religious sensitivities or the turmoil and conflict associated with the Middle East.

He said his aim is to deliver an environmental message highlighting the plight of the world's lowest and saltiest body of water, which is rapidly drying up.

"Hopefully my work with this will be associated with the human-made natural disaster at hand, and not with war," he said.

After three mass rallies in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in recent weeks, social protest moves to Haifa, Beersheba and Afula. 'We want a future in our country,' says Ben-Gurion University's Student Union leader
" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , your government is not the only government responsible for the situation. But the people woke up on your term, and you'll be the one to provide solutions,".
Another social activist from Beersheba slammed the prime minister. "Netanyahu, don't you know what justice means? We're not in America, we're in Israel. I warn you from this stage that if you fail to listen to the people, there'll be huge chaos here, the people will take over and use violence if needed."

The Arab sector joined the social protest with rallies in the cities of Sakhnin, Tayibe and Umm al-Fahm.

Ynet reporters Latest Update: 08.14.11

Priphery joins social protest: More than 70,000 people on Saturday evening attended protests against the cost of living and soaring housing prices in the southern city of Beersheba, northern cities of Haifa and Afula and many other cities across the country, according to police estimates. The rallies' participants included the leaders of the Tel Aviv protest city, youth movement members, social activists, worker committees' representatives and famous artists.

In Haifa, more than 25,000 Jews and Arabs marched from the Kiryat Eliezer neighborhood to the German Colony, chanting: "We want social justice" and "The government is responsible for the crisis." Some 12,000 protestors gathered in Beersheba and 15,000 in Afula. Thousands of people staged smaller rallies in other 14 towns, such as- Nazareth,Nahariya,Netanya,Modiin,Beit Shemesh,Ashkelon,Dimona and Eilat.

The Arab sector joined the social protest for the first time since it began, although not in masses, with rallies in the cities of Sakhnin, Tayibe and Umm al-Fahm.

Uri Keidar, chairman of Ben-Gurion University's Student Union, said during the social protest in Beersheba: "Everyone hears about sleepy citizens, tired youth and detached students. We love this state. We are the salt of the earth, we all woke up and said enough, we want to live in our country in dignity. " Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , your government is not the only government responsible for the situation. But the people work up on your term, and you'll be the one to provide solutions," Keidar said.

Social activist threatens violenceSigal Keren, a social activist from Beersheba, slammed the prime minister. "Netanyahu, don't you know what justice means? We're not in America, we're in Israel. I warn you from this stage that if you fail to listen to the people, there'll be huge chaos here, the people will take over and use violence if needed."
Itzik Shmuli, chairman of the National Student Union, said during the Afula protest that young people in Israel "have the power to change, to demand a better future. The State has almost given up on us, but we won't give up on the State. The joint goal is starting to bring down the walls between Arabs and Jews, seculars and religious, rightists and leftists. The cost of living has hurt all of us. "We are prepared for a long struggle, but the change is already here," Shmuli added, calling on Netanyahu to "make a social and economic u-turn."

Singer Achinoam Nini, known worldwide as Noa, said upon arriving to perform in Beersheba: "I think it's a great idea to move the center to the periphery. We are witnessing an amazing civilian awakening and I hope it continues. "Everyone wants to find a balance between freedom of opportunities, economic freedom and prosperity and mutual commitment... This can only take place under conditions of peace, and I believe this word is not mentioned sufficiently."

After last week's 300,000-participant protest , the organizers of Tel Aviv's tent city decided to give up on the limelight this Saturday in favor of the periphery. "Today, the fake barriers between Tel Aviv and the rest of the country will finally be broken," Regev Contes, one of the Tel Aviv protest leaders, told Ynet earlier Saturday.
"The Tel Aviv bubble, which only existed in the media, is evaporating and making room for a united people of Israel against the only force it is really confronting - the tycoon-backed government," said Contes. "We call on all of Israel's residents to flock to the rally closest to their homes, whether by car or by foot, and to take part in the change we all hope for."

Medical Cannabis Prescribed In Israeli Nursing Home

Some medical patients suffer from such severe pain that no medicine can help. However, there is a natural remedy which can bring some relief. A geriatric home in Israel prescribes medical cannabis to some of their patients suffering from certain ailments. Here's more from our Israeli bureau.

At Hadarim Geriatric Home, medical cannabis is weighed and given to some of the patients.

Among them... Moshe Rott. He receives medical cannabis as a powder mixed with tobacco.

:
"What does it do? It makes me tranquil and less uptight. I'm able to take it easy, and I feel restful. Before that my hands were in pain, like someone suffering from Parkinson's disease. It stopped after three months. My hands don't shake anymore, and it's totally different."

A television program on medical cannabis caught the attention of the geriatric home's head nurse.

:
"We were simply looking for some kind of medicine that will bring relief... and we found it."

Since the 19th century, cannabis has been known to ease pain.

And since 2008, the Israeli Ministry of Health has given limited permits for companies providing medical cannabis, allowing patients to use it for the relief of diseases and severe side effects.

According to the Chairman of the Israeli Pharmaceutical Federation, there are some concerns that the cannabis may be used for non-medical purposes.

Another concern is that it will become too easy for the medical establishment to prescribe cannabis for any problem, although current research is not yet completely clear on the appropriate use of cannabis.

Public pressure is also playing a role.

:
"On one hand the Ministry of Health doesn't grow these plants. On the other hand the DNA of the Israel Anti Drug Authority is drugs and we're talking about a product that is a drug but also used for medical treatment and they don't know how to deal with it. Finally there are the police who are afraid that it could spill over to yet another market."

Pain specialist Dr. Bareket Schiff-Keren recommends medical cannabis to some of her patients.

:
"If the question is relieving pain and leading a normal life, as opposed to being dependant on a drug...then why not take that drug to improve one's quality of living?"

In Moshe Rott's room, he is working on a book, able to write again - he says thanks to taking medical cannabis.

:
"The Ministry of Health claims that these patients possess scientific evidence that their illness can be relieved by using medical cannabis."

An instructor from one of the providing companies says the most crucial point about cannabis is that it's not dangerous or hazardous to the patient.

Nonetheless, many people remain afraid to try it.

Shakira visit Israeli-Palestinian school and meet Israeli president Peres

When Shakira met Peres at the presidential conference:

Peres told Shakira she conquered the country without firing a single shot, not hinting at her Lebanese origin. He complimented her on the depth of her songs, and Shakira smiled in embarrassment.

By Roy Arad
22.06.11

President Shimon Peres' grand events always operate on two levels. On one hand, there are witty, hopeful speeches sprinkled with stardust by the famous people who attend them - in this case, for the Israeli Presidential Conference at Jerusalem's International Convention Center Jerusalem, it's the singer Shakira. On the other hand, there is the gray and chilly reality outside, where poor people are struggling to pay for their cottage cheese and a whole country cannot fund a little library in Kiryat Shmona.

In the noisy press room, I asked someone whom I took to be an overly made-up assistant from the President's Residence where the bathrooms were. Later, I realized it was Ayala Reshef from the "Big Brother" television program.

A reporter from Ma'ariv showed up, looking exhausted. "We were with Shakira at the bilingual school until now," he said. "It was idiotic. A waste of time. But for your column, it's a classic."

"What's she doing here?" somebody whispered to his friend in the hallway.

"Shakira? I have no idea," the friend responded.

"No, I mean Ayala from 'Big Brother,'" the first man said.

After that, they both got to work straightening a Keren Hayesod schnorring sign in Yiddish that had gone crooked. "It's all in the details, bro," the man said.

In the room where the press conference took place, I counted 16 television crews interested in this worthless item.

Then Peres, wearing a pink tie, entered with Shakira. An embarrassing incident immediately occurred: After a few fine words, Peres called her "Sharika," then corrected himself quickly as everyone laughed.

Peres told Shakira she conquered the country without firing a single shot, not hinting at her Lebanese origin. He complimented her on the depth of her songs. "You'd think she's Bob Dylan," a photographer whispered from behind me. Shakira smiled in embarrassment and actually looked quite nice.

Though the conference shows that celebrities are as attracted to Peres as ever, today, he can't escape his job of being a human shield for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's failed peace process. It's like a polluting industry using an environmentalist to show its green credentials.

I escaped from the speeches in the middle to get some food at a restaurant in Mahane Yehuda. The waiter saw me with the stupid tag I forgot to take off and asked me to send his regards to the girls from the president's bureau. I told him there's no food at the conference.

"It's not a food conference," he said, "it's a money conference."
