Article explaining the video : The inventor of Bitcoin has been shrouded in a mystery so complete, it's baffled even core developers for the virtual currency. Who is Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym for the person or group of people who came up with the original idea for the electronic cash system in 2008? After contributing thousands of lines of code and hundreds of posts on Bitcoin, Nakamoto sent a note to a developer in April 2011 saying that he had "moved on to other things." Later that year, the New Yorker and others tried to unravel the mystery, but came away empty-handed. But now Ted Nelson thinks he has the answer. The computer visionary has posted a video on YouTube in which he claims that the real person behind the pseudonym is none other than Shinichi Mochizuki, a math professor at Kyoto University. Of course, Nelson doesn't offer up a lot of specifics to back up his theory, only explaining that Mochizuki is a brilliant mathematician and has a background that fits with the behavior of the elusive Nakamoto. Nelson also claims to have looked where others haven't, asking himself, "What would Sherlock Holmes have done?" A large portion of the video consists of Nelson lauding the virtues of Bitcoin. He compares it to gold in one example: "Most people call Bitcoin a virtual currency, but I call it electronic gold," he says with a flourish of his eyebrows. "Like gold, Bitcoin has no central authority...Like gold there will always be a limited supply, and thus its value will increase, and like gold, Bitcoin is brilliant." He then goes on to discuss the history of Bitcoin and its founder and his own feelings of empathy for Satoshi Nakamoto, saying he felt as if during his search he was looking for his "own long lost brother." Funds from the cattle sale went to three of his kids, according to federal disclosure forms filed as part of his presidential run. Fourteen years later, he made an estimated $100 million in a single month. In January, the Current TV network, which he helped to start in 2004, was sold to Qatari-owned Al Jazeera Satellite Network for about $500 million. After debt, he grossed an estimated $70 million for his 20 percent stake, according to people familiar with the transaction. Two weeks later, Gore exercised options, at $7.48 a share, on 59,000 shares of Apple Inc. stock that he'd been granted for serving on the Cupertino, California-based company's board since 2003. On paper, it was about a $30 million payday based on the company's share price on the day he claimed the options. That's a pretty good January for a guy who couldn't yet call himself a multimillionaire when he briefly slipped from public life after his bitterly contested presidential election loss to George W. Bush in late 2000, based on 1999 and 2000 disclosure forms. Gore isn't finished exercising his Apple stock grants. Those 59,000 are part of 101,358 Apple options and shares of restricted stock Gore has amassed, according to company filings, giving his total holdings a gross value of more than $45.6 million today. Nobel PrizeAlbert Arnold Gore Jr., 65, is a lot of things to a lot of people. Among friends and fans, he's the progressive Democrat who should have been president, visionary author and Internet prophet, the man who more than anyone drove climate change to the center of public consciousness. Detractors see Gore as a limousine liberal, tiresome pedant and climate alarmist who lives a jet-setting, carbon-profligate lifestyle while preaching asceticism for everyone else. His work and writing on global warming have earned him a share of a Nobel Prize as well as a South Park cartoon parody in which he tries to scare school kids to his beliefs with a fictitious global-warming surrogate monster known as ManBearPig. Whatever you think of Gore, one thing is indisputable: leveraging his aura as a technology seer and his political and climate work connections, Gore has remade himself into a wealthy businessman, amassing a fortune that may exceed $200 million. Romney WealthThat's close to the $250 million net worth of 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney , whom President Barack Obama and Democrats targeted in ads and speeches as being out of touch with most Americans. Gore declined to be interviewed for this story. Estimates of his wealth are based on company filings, government records, public pronouncements he or his associates have made about past business dealings and interviews with people in a position to know of and evaluate Gore's holdings. How Gore achieved this is as much about timing and luck as it is about business skills. His Apple board tenure has coincided with a 5,900 percent increase in its stock price. Current TV was a moribund "fixer-upper" when Al Jazeera stepped in to buy it at "a huge valuation," said Derek Baine, an SNL Kagan cable analyst in Monterey, California . Gore also had his share of flubs, most of them in his efforts at green-tech investing. An investment firm he helped to start took stakes in two carbon-trading firms that fizzled and also racked up tens of millions in losses in a solar-module maker. Diving InThe wealth accumulation attests to Gore's ability, particularly among technology companies and rich political progressives, to attract moneyed and skilled people to do deals with him or seek his paid counsel. This may be in part because Gore, by reputation, shuns figurehead appointments for real ones. One example: At Apple's request, he dove into an options backdating scandal, which predated his arrival, chairing a 2006 committee that recommended revisions to company policies. "It doesn't surprise me," Reed Hundt, a Gore high-school friend, said of his business success. Hundt, whom Gore helped get appointed to run Bill Clinton's Federal Communications Commission in 1993, didn't detect a business gene in young Al back in their days at Washington 's private St. Albans School. He's moved up the housing ladder since then. He owns a 20- room, 10,000-square-foot antebellum mansion in Nashville's wealthy Belle Meade neighborhood that's mostly shrouded from view by a thicket of Southern foliage and a massive iron gate. In 2010 -- weeks before the Gores announced they were dissolving their 40-year marriage -- he purchased an oceanfront six- bedroom, $8.9 million villa in Montecito, California, where Oprah Winfrey and Kirk Douglas have lived. Utility BillIt isn't clear how the divorce affects Gore's net worth. No settlement has ever been published and Betsy McManus, Al Gore's director of communications, declined to comment on it. Such lavish living isn't lost on Gore's critics. In 2007, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, using a public records request, published Gore's Nashville home utility bill, showing it used almost 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006 -- 20 times the national average household consumption. Gore's people dismissed the revelation. His ascent into America's 1 percent happened quickly. After losing to Bush, he had enough wealth by March 2008 to put $35 million into hedge funds and private partnerships through Capricorn Investment Group, a Palo Alto, California-based company, according to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission documents. The investment company was founded by his buddy, Canadian billionaire Jeffrey Skoll, who amassed a large part of his fortune in shares he was awarded as the first president of EBay Inc. Book ProfitsHis best-selling climate books, "Earth in the Balance," "An Inconvenient Truth" and "The Assault on Reason," haven't contributed to his wealth. Gore has long pledged any book and film money to his nonprofit, the Climate Reality Project, created in 2011 from two advocacy groups Gore founded a year earlier. By the time of the Capricorn investment, he was already starting to rake in cash from Generation Investment Management - - a fund that incorporates "sustainability" into its investment approach. Gore co-founded GIM in 2004 with former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Managing Director David W. Blood. Public filings show that in 2008 through 2011 London-based GIM racked up almost 140 million pounds ($218 million) in profits to be split among its 26 partners. Gore and Blood as founders are thought to have the largest equity stakes. GIM doesn't disclose partnership equity or how the partners split profits, said Richard Campbell, a spokesman. Prosperous EnterprisesGore had a string of connections and invitations to join what would turn out to be prosperous enterprises. Skoll's Participant Media produced the 2006 Oscar-winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," based on Gore's climate work. The movie was pivotal in helping him win his share of the 2007 Nobel and claim speaker fees at $175,000 a pop. Prior to being invited to join Apple's board, Gore was tapped as a senior adviser to Google Inc. (GOOG) before its 2004 initial public offering and at a time when it was not yet a household word. Google won't discuss his duties or compensation though some in Silicon Valley believe his pay there may be as rich as his Apple remuneration, which that company is required to disclose because he's a director. Kleiner PerkinsBlood joined with Gore after he was among the original 221 Goldman partners who got shares in that company's 1999 IPO. Blood's 0.66 percent stake, based on valuations at the time, was thought to be worth about $100 million. Blood lived with his family in Brazil as a youngster and has said he was distressed by the extreme poverty there. Gore's notion of "sustainable capitalism" appealed to Blood, who also declined to be interviewed for this story. In November 2007, GIM announced a partnership with Silicon Valley venture capital company Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers, to join its green-investing efforts. The goal, according to a joint press release at the time, was to create "a global collaboration to find, fund and accelerate green business, technology and policy solutions with the greatest potential to help solve the current climate crisis." Gore was made a partner at Kleiner Perkins and John Doerr, an early investor in Amazon.com Inc., Intuit Inc. and Google, joined GIM's advisory board. At Kleiner Perkins, Gore helps with investment strategies and selectively advises companies but doesn't lead deals or take board seats on startups the firm invests in. Kleiner Perkins declined to discuss his compensation. Green BlemishesInvesting on behalf of its clients, GIM has put $50 million to $100 million in KPCB's $1 billion green growth fund, according to two people with knowledge of the amount who asked not to be identified because they aren't authorized to speak about it. While Kleiner Perkins doesn't publish fund results, its green fund hasn't had unblemished success. Along with potential winners like Bloom Energy, a fuel-cell maker, and Nest Labs Inc., a thermostat company, Kleiner Perkins also backed Miasole Inc., a solar-panel maker that was bought for a reported $30 million after raising at least $494 million from investors, and Fisker Automotive Inc., the electric-car maker that fired three-quarters of its staff last month. Well VersedGore earns his keep in Silicon Valley beyond simply attending the annual holiday party. He's made himself available to a number of technology companies that got startup help from Kleiner Perkins. Andrew Fisher, chairman of Shazam Entertainment Ltd., a mobile music app maker backed by Kleiner Perkins, said Gore flew to London two years ago and agreed to be interviewed on stage in front of about 200 company employees and business partners. Gore's preparation was first rate and it was clear that "he's tremendously well-versed" in Kleiner Perkins's investments, Fisher said. At the presentation, "he talked about his work around the environment, leadership in small companies, decision making, sitting on the board of Apple. People were fascinated with his insight." Gore paid a similar visit last year to a recycling plant in Vancouver run by Harvest Power Inc., one of Kleiner Perkins's clean-tech companies. Shopkick VisitEric Feng, former Hulu LLC chief technology officer and ex- Kleiner Perkins employee, described Gore as an energized and active participant in investment decisions who is "very well- respected among the partners." He's regularly asked for feedback on investments and is considered "a very valuable resource," Feng said. Shopkick Inc. Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Cyriac Roeding met Gore about two years ago at Kleiner Perkins. As a guru on climate change, Roeding figured Gore was unlikely to have much interest in Shopkick's technology, which helps retailers target customers with discounts. "I took a photo with him because I thought I'd never see him again," Roeding says. He was wrong. In February 2012, Gore joined Roeding at the Village Pub in Silicon Valley -- the same place where Mark Zuckerberg was famously courted by Accel Partners' Jim Breyer -- for an intimate event with about 35 executives from top retailers like Macy's Inc., Crate &amp; Barrel and Target Corp. In a fireside chat, Gore answered every question Roeding threw his way and showed a deep knowledge of Shopkick's market. Internet Invention"I had not planned on talking about Shopkick, but he just kept coming back to it," Roeding says. "He talked about how the future of the physical world is converging with the digital world." They love Al Gore in Silicon Valley and why shouldn't they? Gore never claimed, as some conservative critics have asserted, to have invented the Internet. Still, as a Tennessee congressman and senator, he was the first national politician to see how personal computers connected to a system he popularized as the "information superhighway" would radically change the social and commercial landscape of the U.S. and the world. He drafted the Performance Computing Act of 1991, often called the Gore Bill, which led to funding to build the system that later became the Internet. Luck and TimingNone of this was lost on Apple when, in March 2003, Steve Jobs personally asked Gore to join the board. An Apple press release about the appointment was a techie love fest. "Al is an avid Mac user and does his own video editing in Final Cut Pro," Jobs said. Apple was trading at about $7.50 a share when Gore accepted the Apple board seat. The company's stock closed at $449.98 on May 3 in New York. The escalation of his options alone would have made him rich. Gore's profiting from the Al Jazeera sale is another example of luck, timing or both. Gore and partners that included Los Angeles billionaire Ron Burkle, Hyatt Legal Services founder Joel Hyatt and San Francisco money manager Richard Blum bought the predecessor company for $70 million in 2004. Re-launched as Current TV, Gore said at the time he wanted to create a "transformational" network. It would, like YouTube, thrive on youthful viewer input, be an antidote to Fox News and a liberal competitor to MSNBC . Olbermann SuitInstead, Current failed to make much of an impact at all while Gore was paying himself $1.2 million a year in salary and bonuses, according to 2008 SEC documents filed as part of a proposed public offering that was later withdrawn. Meanwhile, Time Warner Cable Inc., which carried the network and accounted for about 9 million of its subscribers, made noises about dropping Current from its listings along with other "low- rated" networks. In 2011, Current attempted to remake itself by bringing in Keith Olbermann, the former anchor of MSNBC's Countdown program. The relationship quickly devolved into a public relations disaster. Olbermann, who had signed what was reported to be a five-year, $50 million contract, was fired in March 2012. Accusations and lawsuits flew. Current, in an April 6, 2012, breach-of-contract suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court, accused Olbermann of waging a campaign to "undermine" the network by, among other things, taking unauthorized days off, leaking the terms of his contract to the media and failing to lead Current's 2012 primary election coverage as he was asked to do. 'Immediate Interest'Olbermann, in his own lawsuit, painted an ugly picture of the Gore-anointed management team. Current, while promising to deliver "a high-caliber political commentary show," turned out to be amateur hour with Gore and co-founder Hyatt "no more than dilettantes portraying entertainment industry executives." Olbermann had asked the court to award him as much as $70 million. The two parties reached a settlement in March for terms that weren't disclosed. The sale to Al Jazeera drew a lawsuit from media consultant John Terenzio who said putting the two networks in touch was his idea and he's owed money. Terenzio said he sent an intermediary to see Current investor Richard Blum under a supposition that "in light of Current's well-publicized financial woes, its principals might be interested in selling the struggling network." Blum, according to the lawsuit, "expressed immediate interest" in hearing Terenzio's proposal, explaining that "he and other Current investors were concerned about the prospect of losing their shirt in financially troubled Current." Blum, Al Jazeera and Current declined to comment on the lawsuit. 'Mogul Al'The transaction also raised eyebrows because Gore, who has for years inveighed against fossil fuels and their role in climate change, sold the network to a company funded in part by oil-rich Qatar. Jon Stewart, host of the Daily Show television program, asked in January, "Can mogul Al Gore coexist with activist Al Gore?" Gore defended the sale on the grounds that, among other things, Al Jazeera has "the highest quality, most extensive, best climate coverage of any network in the world." It's a position Gore's been forced to defend repeatedly along the tour for his latest book "The Future: the Six Drivers of Global Change." Cable TV analysts, meanwhile, were abuzz over the $500 million payout. Current had been seeking buyers for a while, aware that Time Warner might soon pull the plug, but had not found any takers until Al Jazeera stepped forward. 'High Price'"It seems like a really high price to me," SNL's Baine said. "It's hard to sell a fixer-upper. From the beginning Current had a programming strategy that hadn't worked and they changed it over and over and it still didn't work. Honestly, not a lot of people had ever heard of it." Al Jazeera might have been desperate enough to get into the U.S. market to pay that kind of a premium since it's still cheaper to buy a network than it is to build one from scratch, he said. "To be locked out of one of the world's biggest markets is a problem for them," Blaine said. Al Jazeera, while declining to comment on the price, has said it intends to hire about 100 journalists in New York and Washington for its rebranded channel. The deal had no sooner been announced than Time Warner Cable said it was in fact pulling the plug on Current "as quickly as possible" and wouldn't carry the rebranded Al Jazeera channel over its U.S. distribution system. Meanwhile, Gore's "sustainable" GIM investing company has seen its philosophy of buying stocks and holding for the long term tested at times. Blood and GoreBlood and Gore, as the company is sometimes known, eschews "the dominance of short-termism in the market" which "fosters general market instability and undermines the efforts of executives seeking long-term value creation," the two men wrote in an 2011 op-end in the Wall Street Journal. GIM's roster of publicly traded U.S. holdings include successful, albeit not particularly green, companies like Amazon, EBay, Procter &amp; Gamble Co. and Colgate-Palmolive Co. A few of the others would count in GIM parlance as green or at least sustainable investments, such as Solarcity Corp., a rooftop solar installer, and Blackbaud Inc., a software maker that helps nonprofits raise money. Green InvestingGIM has assets under management of about $8.5 billion. Its investment strategy and returns have been impressive enough that Britain's Environment Agency asked it to manage 7.2 percent of its 1.6 billion-pound investment portfolio through 2014. That's up from 4.8 percent in 2009, according to documents filed with Britain's securities regulator. At times the company's green investing approach hasn't worked. In 2008, with optimism that a Democrat-controlled Congress would establish carbon controls and an international climate treaty would be extended, GIM bought a 9.6 percent stake, in Camco International Ltd., a manager of projects that reduce greenhouse gases. By early 2010, GIM had upped its stake in the company now known as Camco Clean Energy Plc to 18.6 percent, according to documents. By October of that year, with Republicans in the House saying no to climate legislation and Kyoto Protocol talks stalled, shares in Camco were taking a beating. GIM dumped its stake. Neither company would comment on GIM's actions. Climate ExchangeIn another instance, GIM took a 10 percent stake in the Chicago Climate Exchange, set up in 2003 by former derivatives guru Richard Sandor to take advantage of what the exchange's founders hoped would be a government-mandated price on carbon. The exchange ran into the same headwinds as Camco and was sold to Atlanta-based IntercontinentalExchange Inc. in May 2010 for $581 million. It was later shut as carbon prices fell to all- time lows. GIM would only say that neither Camco nor Chicago Climate Exchange were profitable investments. If emissions limits had been approved by Congress, both Camco and the exchange stood to rake in huge profits, said Dan Kish, vice president for policy with the Washington-based Institute for Energy Research, which gets funding from oil and natural gas companies. "Al Gore is like the preacher touting his moral purity and superiority," Kish said. "Yet it turns out that heeding his preachings is directly linked to his financial interests." Besides its losing investments in Camco and Chicago Climate Exchange, GIM also bailed out of First Solar Inc., a solar-panel maker that, like bankrupt Solyndra LLC, got squeezed when cheap Chinese supplies began hitting the market in late 2010. Democracy 'Hacked'According to SEC filings, GIM first began buying First Solar at $113 a share in the third quarter of 2010. GIM continued its buying for several more quarters even as the shares lost luster. When it was clear First Solar was truly tanking, GIM dumped its last lot in the second quarter of 2012. It's accumulated loss was $165.9 million, according to a Bloomberg calculation based on SEC filings. Gore said in a May 1 interview with Bloomberg Television that American democracy has been "hacked" by the influence of money in politics and that he hopes activist investors will continue to exert influence on corporations globally to act in a responsible way. During a 2009 House hearing, Tennessee Republican Representative Marsha Blackburn tackled Gore on the issue of whether he had become a "climate profiteer" by betting on companies that might hugely benefit from his advocacy. Gore's response: "Congresswoman, if you believe that the reason I have been working on this issue for 30 years is because of greed, you don't know me." Al-Usuquf's most startling revelation is that "Atomic bombs won't be launched, they are already there". "Seven nuclear heads have already been positioned on American soil, before September 11, and they are ready to be detonated. Before September 11, American security was a fiasco, and even later, if we needed, we could position the bombs there. They arrived through seaports, as normal cargo. A nuclear head is not bigger than a fridge, so it can easily be camouflaged as one. Thousands of containers arrive at a seaport every day, and even with very efficient security, it's impossible to check and examine each one of them." Al-Usuquf says that the bombs were bought on the black market: five from the former USSR and two from Pakistan. The five Russian heads "are from T-3 missiles, also known as RD-107, and their power is around 100 kilotons each, that is five times the Hiroshima bomb. The Pakistani ones are less powerful, something around 10 kilotons each." Each of the Russian bombs would have cost around $200 million. Al-Qaeda was able to raise the money "because we have many sponsors. Many countries sponsor us, and also some very rich people." And not all of these are Arab countries. "Some European countries as well are also interested in the fall of the US." As to the "rich people", they are "people who are also tired of seeing the US bleeding the rest of the world." And Iraq's Saddam Hussein, says Al-Usuquf, is not one of these people, "but just a collaborator, represented by Abdul TawabHawaish, his vice prime minister and responsible for Iraq's arms program". Al-Usuquf says that the bombs cannot be detected by US authorities. "Even if they are old, they were modernized and are very well hidden. Even if they were located, they have auto-detonation mechanisms in case something or someone gets close. Even an electromagnetic pulse is not capable of deactivating them." The bombs allegedly cannot be detected because "they are enveloped in thick layers of lead". They could be detonated "by various methods - cell phone call, radio frequency, seismic shock or by their regressive clock". Al-Usuquf details the whole plan. The radioactive fallout of water and sediment from the port exposes 150,000 people to hazardous radiation levels, requiring prompt medical attention. Six million people will try to evacuate the Los Angeles region to avoid the radioactive fallout. Gasoline is in critically short supply because of the effects on refineries in the Long Beach area. Long Beach refines approximately one-third of gasoline west of the Rockies, and there is no pipeline infrastructure to import supplies to the region. Radioactive fallout contaminates a 500-km region, prohibiting residence for 10-20 years. Two to three million residents will require relocation facilities. It may not be simple to redirect incoming shipping to alternative ports - even with advance planning: The principal challenge on this issue involves the conflict between the political desire to mitigate the risks of future attack compared with the business requirements for continued operation of the ports and the global shipping supply chain... Viewed from a national security perspective, there could be an immediate call to close all U.S. ports to incoming traffic. In contrast, parts of the business community might advocate an early opening of the ports. However, financial and real estate interests may require financial risk protection before shipping could resume, and this would be almost impossible to acquire following the Long Beach explosion. At the same time, there could be a large-scale exodus from U.S. port cities by local populations fearing the prospect of a second attack. The issue is analogous to the cancellation of airline traffic following the 9/11 attacks, but the problem is much greater given the difficulties of screening 20,000 shipping containers per day originating from ports all over the world. From a business perspective, the problems revolve around the vital economic role of U.S. ports and the global shipping supply chain. Taken together, the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are the largest port of entry to America, and the third largest in the world, handling 30 percent of U.S. shipping imports by value in 2003. If all U.S. ports were closed, it would have large economic implications for almost all domestic business operations, and it would lead to severe disruptions in the availability of basic goods and petroleum in the United States. That is, there is a high probability that the Long Beach scenario would have large economic consequences at great distances from the initial nuclear explosion. It would also have important repercussions for global business activity because the value of imports and exports from all U.S. ports represents 7.5 percent of world trade activity. In the wake of these economic effects, it seems reasonable to assume that there would be large declines in world stock markets, in contrast to the relatively limited financial losses that followed the 9/11 attacks. While those attacks were unprecedented, they had only minor consequences for the economic infrastructure of the United States. The terrorist bomber won't always get through, but the odds are good that, despite our best efforts, he'll (or she'll) get through once and a while. The damage will be reduced if we've thought ahead. This goes for port security. Jonathan Haveman is a trade economist. Here's another input into the port security production function, from his publication, In Search of Greater Policy Vision for Port Planning and Security (February 2004): There are big questions regarding port security that are not being asked. Perhaps the most important is: What is the most effective way to reduce the likelihood of an attack on a U.S. port? Here, there is a pair of alternatives: eliminating vulnerabilities, as current policies do, or implementing a good recovery plan, which current policies fail to do. Although these are alternatives, they are not exclusive. The most effective protection will likely involve a combination of the two. This is so, because in reality, it is unlikely that all vulnerable points will be covered. Given that there is always some risk remaining, the most cost-effective means for reducing risk further may be through reducing the attractiveness of the target. By way of example, suppose that the ports on the San Pedro Bay were put out of commission by an explosion for six months. In the absence of a well thought-out recovery plan, much of the trade destined for U.S. shores would sit idly by as flows were haphazardly redirected. With a plan in place for this eventuality, ships far out to sea could easily redirect as soon as the event occurred, reducing the adjustment cost associated with the port closure. As the cost of a port closure is reduced, the appeal of an attack on the port is similarly reduced. Pursuing both sides of the coin would seem the prudent approach to reducing the likelihood and resulting impact of an attack on a U.S. port. In order to most efficiently allocate the limited resources devoted to port security, spending should be focused on effectively reducing the likelihood of an event. This means paying attention to both increasing the difficulty of assaulting a port and mitigating the costs of an event after the fact. Coming to this conclusion requires greater vision than is currently evidenced in current port security planning. I'm not so sure that this would deter an attack on a port. This probably wouldn't affect the emotional impact of a successful attack; I think that impact is the terrorist's main objective. But it would reduce the economic costs of an attack, and contribute to the economy's resiliency in the face of the terrorist threat. Amid the heightened terrorist alert in the United States and elsewhere, examination of this radiating topic reverberates around the halls of Western governments, security services and in the international press. Meanwhile, I continue to be haunted by the words of an FBI agent, spoken to me when I was visiting Washington, D.C., in 1995. He revealed that federal officials had uncovered "substantial evidence" that bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network had smuggled several Soviet-built nuclear suitcase bombs into the United States. Although the ultimate proof of this contention would be an explosion that no one but America's worst enemies wants to take place, the circumstantial evidence is apparently compelling enough to keep sending Vice President Dick Cheney to his "undisclosed location." The fact that the Kremlin built such weapons is accepted by most Western spy agencies, even if one of the first persons to publicly reveal it was the controversial Russian General Alexander Lebed. He claimed in 1996 that negligent post-Soviet Russian officials had lost track of an astounding 134 of these deadly mini devices, thought to be capable of completely leveling everything within a couple miles of ground zero - not to mention covering an even wider area with carcinogenic nuclear poisons. Even if just a few of the suitcase nukes are unaccounted for, it would be a few too many. Reports continue to circulate that some of these field nuclear devices ended up in the hands of Chechen Muslim groups, who passed them along (for a substantial price) to bin Laden. While this has not been concretely proved as far as I can tell, it is clear to Western security agencies that Chechen rebels have close connections to al-Qaida and its notorious leader. That bin Laden desperately desires to acquire nuclear bombs is also quite evident, given that he has publicly said so. On top of the strong possibility that the Arabian terrorist leader has gotten his jihad hands on KGB-built portable-luggage bombs, it is clear that he has strong supporters in the Pakistani nuclear scientific community. Pakistan's chief nuclear engineer, Bashiruddin Mahmoud, has not hidden his glowing affection for the turbaned desert warrior. Still, it is thought to be extremely unlikely that he might have been able to arrange a nuclear weapons transfer to al-Qaida operatives. Yet his advice would be invaluable if bin Laden succeeded in getting the material needed to build a nuclear device from elsewhere, as many experts fear he has probably done. The contention that bin Laden would have no moral qualms about using such a hideous weapon on his perceived infidel enemies, even if most were civilians, is self evident. After all, it was not the recently revealed CIA office near the World Trade Center that was his main target on Sept. 11. The Saudi dissident realized that the twin towers would be full on a Tuesday morning with civilian workers going about their daily jobs. If 5,000 infidel lives are good to take, surely 500,000 are much better. Chemical strike on New York Seemingly confirming that mass slaughter is the ultimate goal of some Islamic terrorist militants, I was told by another American security official while visiting the Midwest a few years ago that the original World Trade Center attack in 1993 had a non-conventional chemical component. He further revealed that this fact was concealed from the public on orders of senior officials in the Clinton administration, although he did not impute them with evil motives in doing so. He opined that the administration apparently did not want to "worry" the general public with such frightening details. According to my source, deadly nerve agents were placed amid the explosives that blew up in the parking garage underneath the WTC. The Arab terrorists - whom he thought were probably linked to Saddam Hussein - apparently hoped that the debilitating chemicals would be widely dispersed by the truck bomb explosion, killing thousands of people in nearby portions of lower Manhattan. In the actual event, the heat of the intense fire that followed the powerful blast quickly destroyed all but a few traces of the chemical agents, said my source. There is substantial circumstantial evidence that this same "look the other way" attitude carried the day after the TWA Flight 800 explosion in the skies off of Long Island a few years later. After all, why spoil the "feel good" '90s with the reality that despite the collapse of the dreaded Soviet Union, America still had real enemies out there plotting to reduce her to ashes? Some who see darker motives behind such apparent government complacency might wonder if the secular humanist propensity to totally ignore the Islamic fundamentalist terrorist threat until forced to do otherwise on Sept. 11 does not reveal something far more sinister. Indeed, there is apparent room to wonder if some Western secular-humanist leaders - especially those who openly disdain their fellow humans who choose to look to the heavens for Divine guidance - have not long viewed the growing Islamic terrorist menace as a powerful tool to further their ultimate goal of ushering in a New World Order. Expert warrior Although Osama bin Laden and his mainly Middle East henchmen might appear to come from the Middle Ages to most folks in the West, he is clearly a very clever man. This is demonstrated by his carefully crafted video sermons, designed to pull every possible chain to stir up the Muslim masses in support of his self-declared holy war. This guy knows what he is after, and probably has a long-range game plan of how to get there. It may well include a nuclear explosion at an appropriate moment. If you have been following this potential hair-splitting aspect of the unfolding terrorist story in recent weeks, you might know that many nuclear experts doubt that the alleged missing Soviet devices are still able to perform their intended task. Such scientists assure us that the tritium triggers needed to detonate the portable bombs have undoubtedly decayed by now, rendering the devices useless. However, some note that it is possible to recharge the triggers for someone who knows his way around such technical concerns, which might include the Pakistani scientist Mahmoud. At any rate, it is relatively easy to produce a so-called "dirty bomb" comprised of regular explosives laced with nuclear waste materials. Although the kill ratio would be relatively modest from such a blast, it would still act as a powerful psychological weapon in a terrorist war currently focused on the threat of more anthrax attacks. I have not been able to secure any official comment about recent media reports that alert Israeli security forces intercepted a Palestinian terrorist trying to smuggle such a bomb into the Tel Aviv area a couple weeks ago. It seems that government leaders here think that the public is stressed out enough as it is, which is surely the case. However, such an interception might help explain why Prime Minister Ariel Sharon felt compelled to cancel his important trip to the United States this week for "security reasons." After all, he is no longer too upset with the Bush administration for attempting to force Israeli troops out of Yasser Arafat's towns. Sharon is instead quite pleased that U.S. officials have now officially placed the groups that were the main targets of his recent army incursion - known activists belonging to the Popular Front PLO splinter group, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group - on the administration's official terrorist list. He would be happier still if U.S. officials formally recognized that members of Arafat's own Palestinian Authority have engaged in terror strikes over the past year, but he knows that would be asking way too much. Why wait? If Osama and gang have anything nuclear hidden up their flowing sleeves, why haven't they revealed this by launching an attack before now? After all, al-Qaida and Taliban forces are being pummeled by American aircraft in Afghanistan day after day, with no dramatic terrorist response so far in the West other than possibly a few anthrax spores in some mailed envelopes. The answer could be that recent U.S. government warnings and stepped up security have thwarted such an attack, at least for now. Or perhaps the terrorists have been deliberately giving out false information to wear down weary American security forces and the general public, waiting for a later day to act when the overall guard has dropped a little bit. My guess is that the wily bin Laden is not suffering all that badly at present, despite the massive American bombing campaign. He knows that support for the counter-terrorism war is already waning in the West, especially in Europe where hand wringing over relatively modest civilian casualties is reaching fever pitch (when will all realize that this is not a game of virtual war?). Meanwhile additional jihad warriors are crossing over porous Afghan borders everyday, some coming from as far away as England and Indonesia. Without wishing to add to the terrorist problem by further alarming any reader who is already having trouble sleeping at night, I suggest that the Arabian "Robin Hood" may be waiting to unleash his nuclear genii until he can achieve the maximum emotional Islamic response to such a dastardly attack. As a longtime friend and observer of many Arabs belonging to the growing worldwide population of Mohammad's faithful followers, I would nominate the holy month of Ramadan as the ideal time to strike. It is always a period of heightened religious fervor in the Muslim world, as I have witnessed many times firsthand. This year, Ramadan begins on Nov. 17. FEMA is readying for nuclear, biological and chemical attacks against U.S. cities, including the possibility of multiple attacks with mass destruction weapons. The agency has already notified vendors, contractors and consultants that it needs to be prepared to handle the logistics of aiding millions of displaced Americans who will flee from urban areas that may be attacked. The agency plans to create emergency, makeshift cities that could house hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Americans who may have to flee their urban homes if their cities are attacked. Ominously, FEMA has been given a deadline of having the cities ready to go by January 2003 - in about six months. A source familiar with the deadline believes the effort is related to making the U.S. prepared for counterattacks if the U.S. invades Iraq sometime next year. FEMA is currently seeking bids from major real estate management firms, and plans to name three firms in the near future to handle the logistics and planning for these temporary cities. FEMA officials have told these firms they already have tents and trailers ordered. The tents and trailers would provide shelter for displaced populations. The real estate firms are expected to provide engineers and architects to lay the plans for emergency infrastructure needs, such as sewage and electricity. Highly enriched uranium, a crucial ingredient in a nuclear device, could be shielded with less than a quarter-inch of lead, making it "very likely to escape detection by passive radiation monitors," Benn Tannenbaum, a physicist and senior program associate at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, testified at the June 21 hearing of the Homeland Security subcommittee. Committee members were told that the monitors, now installed at ports and border stations, can't distinguish between naturally occurring radiation from everyday items like ceramic tile and the dangerous enriched uranium. What's more, less than a quarter of the radiation devices needed to check all goods crossing U.S. borders have been installed, federal officials told the committee. Bethann Rooney, manager of security for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, testified that none of the cargo moving through the largest ship terminal or goods leaving the port by rail or barge are inspected for radiation. She added that the facility receives about 150 false alarms a day from its 22 radiation portal monitors. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) said he was worried that the high number of false alarms has prompted some agents to lower the sensitivity of the detectors, making them less effective in spotting real danger. The radiation detection systems installed across the U.S. are "quite limited in their capabilities and, in general, are insufficient to the task," said physicist Richard L. Wagner Jr., chairman of the Defense Department task force on preventing a clandestine nuclear attack. Said Rep. Pascrell: "I am not too hopeful about this situation." In a related development, a survey of experts predicted that the likelihood of an attack with a weapon of mass destruction somewhere in the world in the next 10 years could be as high as 70 percent. Most of the 85 experts who took part in the survey - commissioned by U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar - believe that one or two new countries will acquire nuclear weapons in the next five years, and as many as five will get them during the next decade. The survey found that the most significant risk of a WWD attack was from a radiological weapon, a so-called "dirty bomb" that combines radioactive material with a conventional explosive device. The next highest risk was an attack with a chemical or biological weapon, with a nuclear attack less likely, according to the experts, who included retired Gen. Former CIA Director: Terrorist Strike Within U.S. Real Threat Kenneth R. Timmerman Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007 Former CIA Director R. James Woolsey tells NewsMax in an exclusive interview that terrorists could strike the American homeland - possibly with a weapon of mass destruction - this summer or early fall. He also warns that if Iran fails to comply with international efforts to stop its nuclear weapons program, the U.S. will have no other option than to bomb it. "I think the threat of a serious attack in the next few months is very real," Woolsey said. A terrorist strike with a dirty bomb or with biological weapons was "a real possibility." Click here for more . ] Woolsey's comments echo those of FBI Director Robert Mueller, who told NewsMax in May that al-Qaida's paramount goal is clear: to detonate a nuclear device that would kill hundreds of thousands of Americans. Terrorists Plotting Now While Woolsey doubted terrorists would be able to acquire a nuclear explosive device, he warned that terrorists were trying to acquire one, either on the black market from the former Soviet Union, or from Iran or North Korea. The former CIA director said he favored "really tough sanctions" on Iran for another few months, but if that failed to bring Iran's nuclear weapons program to a halt, the United States had no other choice but to bomb Iran's nuclear sites. He also blasted those in the State Department who believe we can convince the Iranians through negotiations to stop their nuclear programs. "I've never thought there's a chance in hell of that," he said. Asked what three things we need to do to make America more safe, Woolsey said that the first and most important was not to tie the president's hands when it came to intelligence collection. Efforts by Democrats to require court orders to intercept international communications amounted to "shooting ourselves in the foot," he added. More Pressure on Iran Next, he said the United States absolutely must step up pressure on Iran, by focusing on Iran's weak economic underbelly and the wellspring of popular discontent with the regime. In the longer term, Woolsey said it was essentially that the U.S. beef up its military forces and to prepare Americans psychologically and politically for a long war with radical Islamic terrorists. "I think this is a long war, and we need to treat it as such, and go on a full war-footing," he said. Woolsey had plenty more to say on the topic of Iran, wrapping up the interview with a list of things needed to keep the United States safe. NewsMax: Everyone now seems to agree that Iran poses a threat to the United States. But opinions differ on what to do about it. Where do you stand in the Iran policy debate in Washington? Woolsey: I'm still in the camp, but probably only for a few more months, of those who want to try really tough sanctions. And I mean, doing everything we did to the Soviets in the Cold War, everything anybody could think of to undermine their economic system. Beginning right now, we need to work with those countries that sell refined oil products to them, such as gasoline and diesel, of which they import about 40 percent, to figure out how to get those stopped. We need broadcasting into Iran in the fashion we used to do on Radio Free Europe during the Cold War into Eastern Europe. I testified about these things last time nearly two years ago to a Senate committee, saying it was getting late. So I don't know if sanctions can work. But I believe there is a chance that really blocking their imports of gasoline and refined diesel would work, by bringing a lot of dissention from minority groups which are nearly half of the country, and from regular citizens, as happened a few weeks ago with Ahmadinejad's gas rationing and increase in gas prices. So I would still like to see us try that not half-heartedly but vigorously, and not be deterred at all by the threats and the other steps that they will take. Remember, the Persians invented chess. They're good at it. Their most valuable piece, their "queen" really, is their nuclear weapons program. Syria rises to the level of a rook, since that's a government. Hamas, Moqtada al-Sadr, Hezbollah, they're all pawns. Whether it was the war with Israel or what, they move their subordinate pieces around in such a way as to protect their queen. Once they have a nuclear weapon, the world changes in some extraordinarily unpleasant ways. So I believe that for a short time - I don't know if its four to five months, or a year, but it's surely not much longer than that - we can still try tough sanctions, and all the other steps - the right kind of broadcasting, and all the rest. And if that doesn't work, then we're in a situation where we have a choice of letting Iran have a nuclear weapon, or using force. And at that point, with great reluctance, just as I think he was reluctant to advocate it but has done so, I agree with John McCain. Force is the worst option except for one. And that is allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon. NewsMax: The State Department seems to want to negotiate with Iran over Iran's support for Iraqi insurgents. Is this wise? Woolsey: I rarely flat oppose talking to adversaries, but the time you want to do it is when you have an edge over them, not they have an edge over you. I think that in spite of some recent military successes, the situation in Iraq is particularly difficult with the Maliki government, and with Moqtada Sadr on the whole relatively unconstrained, that they are relatively speaking in a stronger position than I would like to see for us to take any initiative in negotiations. It might have been different right after Baghdad fell, when clearly they were very worried. That would have been a good time, if one felt there was advantage to negotiations, to talk to them. But I am not confidant that we're not going to have any positive effect from these negotiations. NewsMax: Should the U.S. have seized what is being touted as an Iranian initiative in April 2003? Woolsey: I don't know how much of an initiative of theirs it was. I've heard stories about it. All I'm saying is that if you're going to negotiate with an adversary, the time to do it is when they are the demandeur, when they are feeling weak and you have just demonstrated strength. And April-May 2003 was such a time. NewsMax: Do you see any signs that the administration is preparing to take military action against Iran? Woolsey: I don't know and I wouldn't necessarily know. If one was going to use air power exclusively, which I think would be likely and appropriate, it would not necessarily be something that would take a huge amount of lead time. Probably two or three weeks, not two or three months. NewsMax: Some Navy people have suggested to me that we would get our carriers out of the Gulf first. Woolsey: That would be a possibility, because it's a constrained sea, and they have lots of small boats that could be used to attack with cruise missiles on them, and they have cruise missiles with a range to potentially be effective against U.S. naval forces in the Gulf, whereas the open ocean - the blue ocean - is our "Briar Patch," as in the Uncle Remus story. That's where we're at home and where we want to be. Certainly our carrier aircraft have the range along with B-52s and B-1s and B-2s to reach targets in Iran even if they're operating from the open ocean as distinct from the Gulf. So I'm leaving it up to the admirals and the secretary of defense where and when to put carriers. But my instinct would be that one would be better off in the open ocean with several carriers rather than have some stay in the Gulf. But there are weapons systems and tactics I may not be aware of. NewsMax: Do you see any signs that the Iranians are preparing to take military action against us? And how seriously should we take their threats? Woolsey: I think you want to listen particularly to what they say to one another. So their threats of destroying Israel, if they can, are as real as "Mein Kampf." Their potential to unleash Hezbollah, which is the world's most professional terrorist organization, much more capable really than al-Qaida or others, could conceivably do a lot of damage in the U.S. as well as various places abroad, including Iraq. I don't think that's something that should deter us if we have to take action to deter them from potentially having a nuclear weapon. NewsMax: The director of national Intelligence, Adm. McConnell, FBI Director Mueller, and the president have all warned that the terrorists want to strike us again here at home. How real is the threat of a WMD attack - possibly a nuclear attack - on the American homeland by terrorists? Woolsey: Well, I think the threat of a serious attack in the next few months is very real. It's what Mike McConnell and Mueller have said, and what Chertoff said about his gut feeling. A lot of people made fun of that, but I think that was a senior government official trying to communicate something without saying here's my evidence, because if he says that, he might have blown the source or method of intelligence. So I think various things that he and McConnell and Mueller and others have been saying all suggest that there's a real possibility - now I don't know which particular terrorist group - of something happening and possibly something very bad, late this summer or this fall. I think that unless al-Qaida or the Iranians have been able to obtain a loose old Soviet nuke, it's unlikely it could be a nuclear detonation. It might be possible they could get hold of other nuclear material, like cesium or strontium, which is much easier to get hold of, and have something like a dirty bomb. And certainly biological material, like anthrax, is much easier to produce and get hold of than fissionable material. And we don't know what the North Koreans might be willing to sell to Iran. They have essentially a joint ballistic missile development program; the Shahab and the Taepo Doing/No Dong are essentially the same missile, certainly with the same ranges. North Korea has several bombs worth of plutonium, but plutonium bombs are harder to construct than simple highly-enriched uranium bombs. We believe that it's possible that North Koreans had a HEU program, and at one point they seemed to admit it. But I don't know of any estimates of what they have or what they had. So if one's trying to think of a source of a bomb that terrorists, whether al-Qaida or Hezbollah, might be trying to get their hands on today, a nuclear weapon might be extremely difficult, unless they've been able to buy or otherwise obtain one of the old Soviet suitcase nuclear weapons. NewsMax: Do you think those are real? Woolsey: Certainly the Soviets had atomic demolition munitions that were relatively small - ours were smaller, I think. But each of us had ADMS that could easily be carried by one man. That was also true of some of the smaller nuclear artillery shells that existed. So it's not impossible that a terrorist group could try to get hold of a former Soviet relatively small nuclear warhead. NewsMax: Why do you think we've not been helping the pro-democracy groups inside Iran? Woolsey: I don't know. It's one of the things that we advocated in the committee on the present danger a couple of years ago, that I advocated to the Senate Homeland Security Committee nearly two years ago. I suppose it's because there are disagreements inside the U.S. government. Some people believe we can talk the Iranians out of their nuclear program. I've never thought there's a chance in hell of that. NewsMax: What are the three things we need to do to make America more safe? Woolsey: Well, the thing that we can do in the short order that is most important is not to cut back on our intelligence capabilities, whether it's through restricting the president's ability to intercept communications or otherwise. We know how to do that reasonably well and don't want to shoot ourselves in the foot by cutting back on it. The second thing are the steps we talked about with Iran, from broadcasting to cutting off their imports of gasoline and diesel and all the other financial and economic steps. Those would be the two in the really short order that would be on top of my list. Further down the line, I think we need a substantial increase in our military forces, in our overall national stance of going on a war-footing. I don't think this is just a law enforcement matter. I think this is a long war, and we need to treat it as such; and go on a full war-footing, from everything to making it easy for John Does to give alerts when they see the flying imams doing their thing, to working closely with allies in the Middle East, I think particularly with Israel. Seasoned investigative reporter and former FBI consultant Paul Williams reveals the alarming potential for nuclear terrorism on U.S. soil and the sinister connections among organized crime, illegal immigrants, and al-Qaida. .] Recently, FBI Director Robert Mueller, in an interview with NewsMax, confirmed Williams' main claim. Mueller said al-Qaida's paramount goal is clear: to detonate a nuclear device that would kill hundreds of thousands of Americans. Mueller told NewsMax that at times, the threat feels so real he lies awake at night thinking about the prospect. For many Americans the threat of al-Qaida's nuclear ambitions begins in the time after the horrific 9/11 attacks. But as Williams shows so clearly, al-Qaida has been devising its nuclear plan since the early 1990s - and the U.S. government and other intelligence services have been well aware of al-Qaida's plan. For example, Williams quotes Michael Scheuer, a senior CIA official who headed the agency's bin Laden unit. Scheuer admitted the CIA "found that and al-Qaida were involved in an extraordinarily sophisticated and professional effort to acquire weapons of mass destruction - in this case, nuclear weapons; so, by the end of 1996, it was clear that this was an organization unlike any other one we had ever seen." Remember, Scheuer is describing the period before 9/11, proving again that bin Laden had been investing enormous time, resources, and money into getting nuclear weapons for more than 10 years. Bin Laden and his adherents believe this nuclear cataclysm will usher in "The Day of Islam," the dream of radical Muslims to see all of humankind fall in submission before the throne of Allah as the "Great Satan," America, is brought to her knees. Williams is not surprised at all that bin Laden has planned to launch such nuclear attacks, suggesting his delay is consistent with his past pattern of activities. For sure, it is a plan that has been long in its hatching. Based on the "forgotten testimony" of the FBI's "Confidential Source One," as well as other sources, Williams first presents evidence of bin Laden's purchase of highly enriched uranium in Sudan and nuclear devices from the Chechens and the Russian Mafia. Smith Thursday, March 14, 2002 Chinese Weapons Development and Sales Are Directed Against the U.S. China is angry at the United States. The communist Chinese government unsuccessfully pressed the Bush administration to deny permission for Taiwan's defense minister, Tang Yiau-ming, to attend an arms conference in Florida. On Monday, Tang met with U.S. Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz while visiting the U.S. defense industry conference. As a result of that meeting, the communist Chinese are furious. "We express our strong dissatisfaction and indignation," stated Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi. "We believe it will not only foster the arrogance of Taiwan independence forces, it will also damage Chinese-American relations and cross-strait ties," said Sun. Communist spokesman Sun also noted that China was "deeply shocked" by a recently declassified report that named China as one of six possible nations that could face nuclear strikes from America. Sun stated that China was seeking an "official" explanation of the report from Washington. Sun emphasized that China is a peace-loving nation. The U.S.-Chinese 'Bilateral Military Relationship' Many in the U.S. press, academia and political structure characterize China as our "strategic partner," a nation with similar goals and views as the United States. The U.S. policy of appeasement, that China is a peaceful giant, was documented in the official correspondence of Clinton Defense Secretary William Perry. In a 1995 letter to Chinese General Ding Henggao, U.S. Secretary of Defense Perry wrote that "advancing the military relationship between our two nations remains an objective which we agree serves the long-term interests of peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific Region." Perry wrote quite clearly that the Clinton administration wanted close ties to Beijing by "reiterating my support for our bilateral military relationship." Less than six months after Perry's offer for a "bilateral military relationship," the People's Liberation Army launched a simulated nuclear attack against the two largest cities in Taiwan. In 1996, the PLA Second Artillery Corps fired dummy missile warheads only a few miles off the Taiwanese coast. The 1996 missile crisis nearly started World War III. The Clinton administration had to respond to Beijing's threat to start a nuclear war in the Straits of Taiwan. Clinton's reaction was to send in the U.S. Navy and our aircraft carriers. Chinese Plans for Nuclear War With the U.S. The Chinese military took quick notice of the U.S. carriers, and in 1999 the communist army Office of the Central Military Command wrote a report on future nuclear combat with the United States. "China is not only a big country, but also possesses a nuclear arsenal that has long since been incorporated into the state warfare system and played a real role in our national defense," states the Chinese military commission report. "During last crisis across the Taiwan Straits, the U.S. tried to blackmail us with their aircraft carrier(s), but when their spy satellites confirmed that our four nuclear submarines which used to be stationed at Lushun Harbor had disappeared, those politicians addicted to the Taiwan card could not imagine how worried their military commanders were," notes the Chinese army report. "In comparison with the U.S. nuclear arsenal, our disadvantage is mainly numeric, while in real wars the qualitative gap will be reflected only as different requirements of strategic theory. In terms of deterrence, there is not any difference in practical value. So far we have built up the capability for the second and the third nuclear strikes and are fairly confident in fighting a nuclear war. The PCC has decided to pass through formal channels this message to the top leaders of the U.S. This is one of the concrete measures that we will take to prevent the escalation of war in the spirit of being responsible." Chinese General Wants to Nuke L.A. There is little question that China is "responsible" when it comes to nuclear war. Since 1996, the Chinese army has not stopped its acts of atomic-tipped aggression and intimidation. For example, two years after firing missiles at Taiwan, Gen. Xiong, then second in command of the People's Liberation Army, threatened to vaporize Los Angeles. Not once during the entire 40-year Cold War between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. did any Soviet general threaten to vaporize an American city. It is certain that the Kremlin would have fired any officer who made such a statement, because of the threat to global peace. In contrast, Gen. Xiong remains second in command of the People's Liberation Army, ready to hurl his nuclear forces into battle with America on a moment's notice. According to the CIA, China is expected to continue its rapid deployment of ballistic missiles along the Chinese mainland, within striking distance of Taiwan. China's short-range ballistic missile arsenal could reach "several hundred" by the year 2005, stated Robert Walpole, a national intelligence officer, during a Senate hearing on international security. The CIA intelligence analyst also revealed that Beijing is working on three new intercontinental ballistic missiles, the Dong-Feng 31, a longer-range variant of the Dong-Feng 31, and the submarine-launched JL-2. The DF-31 and JL-2 both have an estimated range of over 7,000 miles and can shower the U.S. West Coast with nuclear warheads. Chinese Nuclear Weapons Proliferation In addition, the leaders in Beijing have taken every opportunity to export missile and nuclear warfare equipment to such nations as Iran, Pakistan and Iraq. The entire Pakistani atomic arsenal was built from scratch with the direct assistance of the Chinese military, including advanced nuclear warhead designs from PLA labs and nuclear-tipped missiles directly out of the Chinese army inventory. The "National Intelligence Estimate," a threat analysis published by the CIA, noted that Beijing has "enabled emerging missile states to accelerate development timelines for their existing programs" and sold "turnkey systems to gain previously non-existent capabilities - in the case of the Chinese sale of the M-11 short-range ballistic missile to Pakistan." In 2001, the U.S. lodged sanctions against the China Metallurgical Equipment Corp. after it continued to ship missile parts to Pakistan, violating Beijing's sixth promise to stop such exports. It should surprise no one that the People's Liberation Army owns China Metallurgical. During the 1990s, the Chinese army also exported an advanced air defense network to Iraq through another front company, in direct violation of the U.N. ban on military sales to Baghdad. The Bush administration openly complained about Chinese military sales to Iraq and eventually bombed several sites occupied by Chinese military engineers working for Saddam Hussein. "We raised earlier in the administration concerns about what might be going on with Iraq," stated Bush national security adviser Condoleezza Rice on Chinese missile proliferation. However, the Chinese army sales to Iraq have not stopped. PLA front companies continue to provide camouflage for Beijing as it attempts to export more advanced weapons to Iraq. For example, the harmless-sounding Shandong Arts and Craft Company is in fact a front for Chinese missile proliferation. In 2001, the firm acted as a cover for a PLA military delegation to Iraq seeking to sell advanced long-range missile technology to Saddam Hussein. China Is a Threat The China apologists in the United States assure us that the communist state is not a threat, that it is a peaceful nation prepared to take its place in the world. Their simplistic view of Chinese history omits the past 40 years of confrontation with America. They refuse to see Beijing's growing inventory of advanced missiles, warships and planes. They ignore years of espionage and covert political influence through contributions to U.S. political campaigns. They continue to seek appeasement despite the overwhelming evidence of missile and nuclear weapon proliferation. In the next 40 years, China will attempt to take its place among the world's superpowers. China's growing arsenal of advanced weapons will enable it to do so in a forceful and violent manner. It is time that we recognized what the People's Liberation Army already knows - that America is its No. 1 target. At a House Committee on Government Reform hearing here, the one-time colonel in Soviet and then Russian Federation military intelligence, gave a chilling presentation of his country's Cold War plans to defeat the United States. Under federal witness protection, Lunev was escorted into the hearing room with a black bag covering his head. From behind a screen to shield him from the view of the audience, Lunev testified Soviet generals had designed a special plan for the future war against America and its allies in which special-operation forces commanders would come to the United States and other NATO countries a few days - maybe even a few hours - before actual war. Using weapons systems that had already been hidden at strategic points throughout the United States, he said, the Soviet generals would have demolished the country's political infrastructure by destroying strategic facilities and assassinating top military leaders such as the president and vice president just hours or minutes before a nuclear missile strike. Lunev said one of his espionage assignments had been to scout "drop sites" for weapons caches. He said he believes Russian military weapons are currently hidden in strategic points all across the United States and Europe for just such a purpose. Those hidden stockpiles of weapons would include portable nuclear devices, chemical and biological weapons, conventional weapons and incendiary devices, he said. Lunev told the panel the weapon caches could be used whenever the Russian commanders in charge are given the "go." He added that Russia is using Chechnya as a test battlefield for a future "real" war that may be with the United States and its allies. "Of course, you understand that this is history," Lunev told the congressional panel after describing the Soviet plan. "I need to tell you that history's history, but unfortunately, the current situation is not very good. "These military plans are still consistent with Russian generals, and these military plans in time of possible war would be fulfilled by special-operations forces commanders." Also present at the hearing was Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind., chairman of the House Committee on Government Reform; Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Calif.; Curt Weldon, R-Pa.; Joe Scarborough, R-Fla.; Dr. William Green, political science professor for the national security studies program at California State University, San Bernardino; and former Central Intelligence Agency officer Peter Pry. Burton said, "Some members of the media are indicating we might be trying to create paranoia and a new Cold War. That's untrue. "I'm distressed that some members of the media think we're trying to scare everyone to death." Asked by reporters why he chose California for this hearing, Burton said, "It's my understanding that there are many potential targets for Russian sabotage in California. "California is the most populous state in the nation. If there are hidden caches of explosives in this state, that's very dangerous. That's why we're here." Campbell, who represents a district in this state, said, "There is a high likelihood of positioning weapons in California." Concerning the possibility of a first strike by Russian forces against the United States, Pry, formerly with the CIA, said the opportunity had presented itself numerous times during the 1980s and 1990s. For example, in 1995, he said, the West and Russia experienced a missile crisis "more dangerous than the 1962 Cuban missile crisis." Pry said that in January 1995, NASA and Norway, in a joint project, launched a meteorological rocket to study the aurora borealis, but the Russian Foreign Ministry never received notice of the launch due to a clerical error by an inexperienced staffer. As a result, Pry said, Russia almost launched its nuclear missiles aimed at the United States. Only then-President Boris Yeltsin, not believing the West would attack, held off the launch and waited to find out if the missile did, in fact, veer off course over the Russian mainland, Pry said. "Despite administration claims that our Russian policy is a success, many of us have watched and worried and warned for years that the Russian policy has careened toward failure," he said. "The administration's Russian policy has been more of a public-relations campaign to persuade the American people all is well rather than a hardheaded, bulleted program to really advance free enterprise and democracy in Russia and to protect U.S. vital national interests." Weldon said the Clinton administration has had a consistent pattern of not wanting anything to surface that might give the perception of a potential or real problem in the relationship between the United States and Russia, including the theft of International Monetary Fund dollars, abuse in insider trading in Russia and arms-control treaty violations. Although many questions regarding U.S. foreign policy with Russia are aimed at the Clinton administration, Weldon said, the hearing was not a "Republican witch-hunt." Burton observed that Rep. Henry Waxman, a Democratic member of the committee who represents a Los Angeles district and is a staunch defender of the Clinton administration, chose not come to the hearing. "I really regret the State Department isn't here today," Burton said. "They just jumped through hoops not to testify." Weldon said that in November of last year he introduced House Resolution 380, expressing concern over the location and removal of weapon caches placed in the United States by the Russian or Soviet governments. Sixteen Republicans and 16 Democrats signed the resolution. Even so, the administration has not asked the Russians for the specific location of the weapon stashes in the United States. Do these stashes pose a threat to Americans domestically? Campbell, speaking for his constituents in California, seems to think so. He said although he doesn't think the United States should back Russia into a corner, he believes the administration should ask Russia the tougher questions concerning the whereabouts of the weapon stashes. "I am a representative," said Campbell. "I am owed an answer." It has not been easy for Campbell to get one. On Dec. 6 of last year, Campbell wrote a letter requesting information about the location of Russian weapon caches in the United States to Clinton's National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Defense Secretary William Cohen. Only Cohen responded to Campbell's letter, on Dec. 16. In the letter Cohen said, "Thank you for your letter requesting information about the location of Russian weapon caches within the United States. I have asked the undersecretary of defense for policy, Mr. Walt Slocombe, to promptly address this request and he will get back to you as soon as possible." Campbell, upset by the brief response he received from Cohen, told NewsMax.com when push comes to shove a subpoena might be needed, but it was wise to try other means first. Now, the CIA and other Western intelligence/espionage organizations are assumed to have been penetrating the dictatorship of China and studying this subject, along with Western professors of Sinology. And here I draw attention to a native Chinese. Yes, a native Chinese, without any degree or post, may know what the Western intelligence/espionage and academic sinology do not. When I, a native Russian, emigrated with my family to the United States in the early 1970s, I told The New York Times and the CIA that the Soviet dictatorship had been developing post-nuclear super weapons, which neither The New York Times nor the CIA would believe to be true for the next 20 years until Yeltsin, who needed peace for his reforms, did not exhibit in 1992 for international inspection the pre-1992 Soviet development of such super weapons. How could I know what the CIA and The New York Times refused to know for another 20 years? I was a native Russian, not a foreigner (such as a Western spy) in Russia to be kept off anything connected with Soviet military secrets. My wife was also a native Russian, and she became without any difficulty the editor of the Soviet edition of the international magazine "Nuclear Physics," under the auspices of the most important Soviet nuclear research institute, headed by Skobeltsin, the founder of Soviet nuclear physics, and staffed by internationally known Soviet nuclear physicists. As my wife told me, Skobeltsin had announced at a general meeting of his subordinates that his institute was to discontinue its nuclear research and to launch, instead, laser research, for example. It was obvious to me what was unknown to the CIA and The New York Times until 1992: the Soviet nuclear research had been succeeded by the development of post-nuclear super weapons. There is no need for a native to penetrate his or her country. He or she is part of it. Zhang Hongbao begins his essay with five major military technologies, and ironically, first comes laser technology, which the founder of Soviet nuclear physics mentioned as a field of research to succeed the nuclear weapons research in Soviet Russia. U.S. defense officials have confirmed that China is preparing to test a new missile capable of delivering nuclear warheads directly to the United States. The Chinese Army Second Artillery Corps is preparing to test its new Dong Feng 31, or "East Wind," ICBM during the next few days. The DF-31 reportedly can carry a single 3-megaton H-bomb or three 90-kiloton nuclear warheads. The missile has an official range of over 4,800 miles. The Dong Feng 31 reportedly is equipped with U.S. missile and warhead technology that was obtained by China through espionage and legal and illegal technology transfers from the Clinton administration. It is expected that the Chinese army will declare the DF-31 operational within the next 12 months. Chinese Navy Missile The new PLA long-range weapon test comes only days after a Chinese navy test of a similar submarine-launched nuclear-tipped missile. The China navy test of a Julang 2, or "Great Wave," missile took place three weeks ago in an area located off the coast of north central China. U.S. intelligence sources recorded a "pop-up" test of the JL-2 from a specially modified Chinese Golf-class diesel submarine. The test simulated the first step in a submarine-launched ballistic missile firing by ejecting the missile from its tube. In an actual launch, the missile's engine would be ignited after clearing the submarine. The Chinese navy plans to deploy the JL-2 missile aboard China's newest ballistic missile submarine, known as the Type 094. The Chinese navy reportedly will take command of the first JL-2-equipped Type 094 submarine in the next 12 months. "From open sources, one cannot assess the real range of the JL-2," noted Richard Fisher, a senior fellow and defense analyst at the Jamestown Foundation. "Most sources note it is the sea-borne counterpart to the DF-31, which is credited with a 8,000 km (4,800 mile) range. However, there is some unconfirmed reporting that the JL-2 may have longer range." U.S. Navy sources expressed concern that a JL-2-armed submarine could sail to within a few hundred miles of the U.S. West Coast. Such a move would place West Coast cities at "point-blank" range, enabling the Chinese submarine to shower Los Angeles or San Francisco with nuclear warheads. The move would also place most - if not all - U.S. cities within range of the H-bomb-equipped missile. "It is likely that the goal for the JL-2 is to be able to reach the western U.S. from the Yellow Sea, an area that the PLA can defend with near-current ship and aircraft resources. But of course, if the Type 094 SSBN is able to reach launch points outside this area, the JL-2's reach will increase," stated Fisher. "India also fears this new SLBM, as it expects that the PLA will produce enough Type 094 SSBNs to pose a credible second strike presence in the Indian Ocean," noted Fisher. New Russian Missile The Chinese missile tests are taking place at the same time Russia is trying to sell a new supersonic land attack missile. Russian missile maker NPO Mashinostroyenia announced in October that it was introducing a new version of the SS-N-26 Yahont cruise missile. The Yahont ramjet-powered missile can reach targets up to 162 nautical miles away at speeds in excess of 1,500 miles an hour. The Yahont was originally designed to be an anti-ship attack missile, but NPO Mash is now offering a new version called the Yahont-M that can strike land targets with "extreme accuracy." The deadly Yahont missile is being offered for sale to Iran, India and China. The missile can be air-launched, sea-launched or even launched from a submerged submarine through a torpedo tube. The Yahont reportedly flies at treetop level at a blistering speed of over 2.6 times the speed of sound. NPO Mash is offering the Yahont-M in combination with the Kondor-E targeting satellite. Russian officials are offering to sell high-resolution satellite data to program the Yahont missile for land targets or even turn over a complete Kondor-E satellite with a radar designation targeting system. The space-based targeting combination is being offered for export "to countries that lack the over-the-horizon targeting capability" required to operate the Yahont. China and Iran in Space U.S. officials are concerned because China reportedly may arm newly-purchased Russian navy vessels with the deadly Yahont missile. While China may not elect to purchase the Kondor-E satellite, it can easily modify a newly-developed SMMS imaging satellite to supply the same space-based targeting information. According to U.S. defense officials, China and Iran are jointly developing the SMMS, or small multi-mission spacecraft. The 1,034-lb. satellite will carry a low-resolution CCD camera and telecommunications systems. Iranian space engineers were in Beijing in September reviewing progress on the joint space satellite program. The SMMS satellite is scheduled for launch in 2004 atop a Chinese booster rocket. China already has a mature medium resolution space imaging satellite program. However, the SMMS will allow the PRC and Iran to improve missile targeting and autonomous military reconnaissance. China has reportedly also offered similar military satellite capabilities to Pakistan. The original text by Lang and Xiangsui is a fascinating look at the true weaknesses of the American military system. It is with this book that China identifies America as its sole predominate enemy. I fully believe and support our military in any and all of its endeavors. However the book correctly points out, among other things, that the US has an obsession with human casualties. It is because of this that wars are fought from a distance, with technology, in order to minimize casualties. This is something that is very evident to anyone who's looked at the American military's history. From World War 2 to Desert Storm II, the increased use of technology and the public outcry over casualties has increased ten fold. This book, correctly so, advances the theory that in the event of a war between China and America, there will be an unconventional war sorts or rather "the war will be fought an won in a war beyond the battlefield" using terrorism, financial institutions, computer hackers, among many others. My point here ? : We've been on this planet a mere microsecond in time yet the Al Gores of the world seem to know what the perfect temperature is .. and that's what it's roughly been for the past 100 yrs. Any deviation is considered abnormal and something must be done about it at all cost. They abuse the speed at which news and views can be whisked around the globe .. filling everyone's head with fear. It's very audacious of us to think we know what's perfect, and are willing to spend endless dollars to keep the status quo . "We will not exit in isolation. We will co-ordinate our exit if any of our non-negotiable terms is violated. Our entry and exit will be collective," Ramesh told reporters in Beijing. The move comes after reports suggested that rich nations led by Denmark are trying to set the agenda of the conference by presenting a draft containing a set of specific proposals. The BASIC countries-Brazil, South Africa, India and China- decided to throw the gauntlet at rich nations by coming up with a counter-draft that will be presented at the conference. They agreed to let China, which initiated the exercise, to present the draft of the developing nations at Copenhagen. "This BASIC draft fully meets India's goals and aspirations. We hope it is made the basis of discussions at the conference," Ramesh said. The draft, which was originally prepared by China, was finalized after some changes during a 7-hour long meeting of BASIC countries-Brazil, South Africa, India and China besides Sudan as the chair of G-77. This joint front forged on Saturday is a major political initiative -- the first major India-China accord on international affairs--that is likely to impact not just the dimension of the talks on climate change but international diplomacy as a whole. The move comes after recent discussions on climate change held with Indian and Chinese leaders by US president Barack Obama, who appears to have made little impact on them. Denmark is expected to unveil its draft to a group of select countries that includes the United States, several European nations, India and China on December 1. It will be later presented at the conference. Around the same time, the BASIC nations plan to circulate their own counter-draft in order to influence the course of negotiations. The four nations issued a joint press release, which made it clear the developed nations should be ready to contribute funds and share green technology if they expected the developing and poor nations to take major actions on environmental protection. The four countries and the chair of G-77 said they were keen to make a "contribution towards a consensus in Copenhagen". "Our efforts to confront climate change must be guided by the best possible information," said EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, announcing the proposal on Tuesday. "Through this new reporting, we will have comprehensive and accurate data about the production of greenhouse gases." Greenhouse gases trap heat from the Sun and warm the planet's surface. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 87 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are related to energy consumption. Since 1990, greenhouse gas emissions in the United States have grown by about one percent per year. In 2005, about 21 percent of the world's total energy-related carbon dioxide was emitted by the United States. Under the proposed rule, the federal government could collect emissions data to inform future policy decisions. The new reporting requirements would apply to suppliers of fossil fuel and industrial chemicals, manufacturers of motor vehicles and engines, as well as large direct emitters of greenhouse gases with emissions equal to or greater than a threshold of 25,000 metric tons per year. Most small businesses would not be required to report their emissions because their emissions fall below the threshold. Some 13,000 facilities, accounting for about 85 percent to 90 percent of greenhouse gases emitted in the United States, would be covered under the proposal. "This is a critical step toward helping us better protect our health and environment - all without placing an onerous burden on our nation's small businesses," Jackson said. The direct emission sources covered under the reporting requirement would include energy intensive sectors such as cement production, iron and steel production, and electricity generation. The first annual report would be submitted to EPA in 2011 for the calendar year 2010, except for vehicle and engine manufacturers, which would begin reporting for model year 2011. Environmentalists say the EPA is now moving in the right direction to address the climate crisis after years of delay under the Bush administration. "The EPA is laying the foundation for strong action on global warming this year. Accurate monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gases will provide the vital framework for an effective program to cap and reduce America's global warming pollution," said David Doniger, policy director for the climate center for the Natural Resources Defense Council. "The Obama administration understands that we need strong leadership by the White House and Congress to meet our nation's challenges - moving to a clean energy future, jumpstarting our economic recovery, and cutting global warming pollution," Doniger said. EPA estimates that the expected cost to comply with the reporting requirements to the private sector would be $160 million for the first year. In subsequent years, the annualized costs for the private sector would be $127 million. In developing the reporting requirements, EPA considered the substantial amount of work already completed and underway in many states, regions and voluntary programs EPA is developing this rule under the authority of the Clean Air Act. The proposed rule will be open for public comment for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. Two public hearings will be held during the comment period. The gases covered by the proposed rule are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and other fluorinated gases including nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) and hydrofluorinated ethers (HFE).
