Inside stomach: Ramen Noodle digestion

BOSTON - A video that has gone viral online may have many rethinking packaged Ramen Noodles for dinner.
The video is so provocative that it has gotten over 1.7 million views on Youtube in just a few months
Chemically preserved for a long shelf life, and easy on the budget at four packages for $1, packaged Ramen Noodles are a staple in many homes. But until now, no one's ever dgotten a look at what happens to them inside the stomach.
After Massachusetts General Hospital found a couple of test subjects willing to swallow the processed meal along with a tiny video camera, we can now see what happens to the noodles as they digest.
Dr. Braden Kuo said he has been stunned by the reaction and what he calls the macabre interest the project has drawn.
The smart pill camera, roughly the size of a large multivitamin, has given researchers an unprecedented 32 hours of video from the stomach to the small intestine.
Prior to this clinical trial, such cameras had only been used to study a person's insides when they were empty.
Kuo, who is the Director of the GI Motility Lab, said the video is striking, showing the stomach contracting back and forth as it tries to grind up the Ramen Noodles.
For comparison, the study subjects also ate fresh, homemade ramen noodles -- on a different day.
When viewed side by side, the results were significantly different.

Iceman Mummy Suffered Head Blow Before Death

By Megan Gannon, News Editor
LiveScience.com
"Otzi the Iceman, Europe's oldest mummy, likely suffered a head injury before he died roughly 5,300 years ago, according to a new protein analysis of his brain tissue.

Ever since a pair of hikers stumbled upon his astonishingly well-preserved frozen body in the Alps in 1991, "Otzi has become one of the most-studied ancient human specimens. His face, last meal, clothing and genome have been reconstructed - all contributing to a picture of "Otzi as a 45-year-old, hide-wearing, tattooed agriculturalist who was a native of Central Europe and suffered from heart disease, joint pain, tooth decay and probably Lyme disease before he died.

None of those conditions, however, directly led to his demise. A wound reveals "Otzi was hit in the shoulder with a deadly artery-piercing arrow, and an undigested meal in the Iceman's stomach suggests he was ambushed, researchers say.

A few years ago, a CAT scan showed dark spots at the back of the mummy's cerebrum, indicating "Otzi also suffered a blow to the head that knocked his brain against the back of his skull during the fatal attack.

In the new study, scientists who looked at pinhead-sized samples of brain tissue from the corpse found traces of clotted blood cells, suggesting "Otzi indeed suffered bruising in his brain shortly before his death.

But there's still a piece of the Neolithic murder mystery that remains unsolved: It's unclear whether "Otzi's brain injury was caused by being bashed over the head or by falling after being struck with the arrow, the researchers say.

The study was focused on proteins found in two brain samples from "Otzi, recovered with the help of a computer-controlled endoscope. Of the 502 different proteins identified, 10 were related to blood and coagulation, the researchers said. They also found evidence of an accumulation of proteins related to stress response and wound healing.

A separate 2012 study detailed in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface looked at the mummy's red blood cells (the oldest ever identified) from a tissue sample taken from "Otzi's wound. That research showed traces of a clotting protein called fibrin, which appears in human blood immediately after a person sustains a wound but disappears quickly. The fact that it was still in "Otzi's blood when he died suggests he didn't survive long after the injury.

Proteins are less susceptible to environmental contamination than DNA, and, in the case of mummies, they can reveal what kinds of cells the body was producing at the time of death. A protein analysis of a15-year-old Incan girl, who was sacrificed 500 years ago, recently revealed that she had a bacterial lung infection at the time of her death.

"Proteins are the decisive players in tissues and cells, and they conduct most of the processes which take place in cells," Andreas Tholey, a scientist at Germany's Kiel University and a researcher on the new "Otzi study, said in a statement.

"Identification of the proteins is therefore key to understanding the functional potential of a particular tissue," Tholey added. "DNA is always constant, regardless of from where it originates in the body, whereas proteins provide precise information about what is happening in specific regions within the body."

In addition to the proteins related to clotting, Tholey and colleagues also identified dozens of proteins known to be abundant in brain tissue in the samples from "Otzi. A microscopic analysis even revealed well-preserved neural cell structures, the researchers said.

"Investigating mummified tissue can be very frustrating," study author and microbiologist Frank Maixner, of the European Academy of Bolzano/Bozen (EURAC), said in a statement. "The samples are often damaged or contaminated and do not necessarily yield results, even after several attempts and using a variety of investigative methods. When you think that we have succeeded in identifying actual tissue changes in a human who lived over 5,000 years ago, you can begin to understand how pleased we are as scientists that we persisted with our research after many unsuccessful attempts."

Their research was detailed in the journal Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences.

A recent Singapore Airlines flight carrying 328 passengers and 28 crew members from Singapore to London was halfway through breakfast service when the plane experienced some unexpected turbulence and the "fasten seat belt" sign was turned on.

A minute later, according to passenger Alan Cross, the captain ordered flight attendants back to their seats, noting that the tone of his voice "was a bit odd."

Cross quickly learned why: The plane suddenly encountered severe clear-air turbulence , causing it to lose at least a hundred feet of altitude in seconds. Needless to say, breakfast was on the house.

Cross told ABC News that "everything that wasn't tied down, including a few people, hit the ceiling," and the food was everywhere.

Once it became safe to roam around, flight attendants quickly cleaned up the mess, and treated a few minor injuries.

There were no additional incidents during the flight's remained 10 hours, and, upon arrival, passengers were given individual boxes of chocolate, which Cross felt was "a nice touch."

The Independent - UK Journal

A man who sprinkled his own pubic hair over a half-eaten curry in an attempt to avoid paying for it has been jailed.

Lee Tyers was caught on camera adding the extra ingredient to his meal before complaining to staff about the hairs.

The 40-year-old had been eating in Jamal's Indian Restaurant, in Middlesbrough, when he called a member of staff over to say he had found some hair in his lamb bhuna.

But restaurant owner Jamal Chowdhury explained to him the hair on his plate was in fact brown and that all the staff had black hair, but Tyers left without paying.

Police were later able to study CCTV footage of the incident, which took place in November last year.

Mr Chowdhury said: "He showed me his plate and I said 'I gave you a clean plate'. He had eaten everything but then on the side of the plate there was some brown hair.

"It was separate and not mixed into the food. I took it under the light and showed him it was brown hair and said that all the staff in the restaurant have black hair."

Court officials at Teesside Magistrates' Court confirmed Tyers was found guilty of fraud by false representation and was sentenced to 14 days in jail and ordered to pay lb39.55 in compensation.

A man is found guilty of sprinkling his pubic hair on a lamb bhuna in an attempt to get out of paying a lb40 bill.
A fraudster who tried to get a free meal in a curry house by putting pubic hair on the remains of his lamb bhuna has been given a prison sentence. Lee Tyers, 40, was caught on CCTV putting his hands down the front of his trousers as he sat in the Jamal Indian restaurant in Middlesbrough town centre. He then told waiting staff that he had found the hair in his food, in an attempt to get out of paying the lb39.55 bill.

Restaurant owner Jamal Chowdhury told the court he had known Tyers, of Mount Leven Road, Yarm, as a customer for around 18 years, but that he was owed lb110 for unpaid previous meals.

He said he told Tyers when he entered the restaurant on November 10 that he would serve him as long as he paid for that night's meal.

Tyers told Mr Chowdhury that he had the cash to pay, before he and a friend ordered two lamb bhunas along with pilau rice, naan bread, drinks, a chapati and a shish kebab.

The pair ate their meal, before Tyers complained to a waiter about the hair in his food.

After a discussion, the pair left the restaurant without paying.

Mr Chowdhury said: "I told him all the staff have black hair and this is brown - it's not our hair."

Tyers denied a charge of fraud by false representation but was found guilty by magistrates at Teesside Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor David Ward said Mr Chowdhury was a "nice man" whose good nature had been taken advantage of.

Jay Leno's 3D Printer Replaces Rusty Old Parts

Jay Leno has a lot of old cars with a lot of obsolete parts. When he needs to replace these parts, he skips the error-prone machinist and goes to his rapid prototyping 3D printer. Simply scan, print and repeat.

One of the hardships of owning an old car is rebuilding rare parts when there are simply no replacements available. My 1907 White Steamer has a feedwater heater, a part that bolts onto the cylinders. It's made of aluminum, and over the 100-plus years it's been in use, the metal has become so porous you can see steam and oil seeping through. I thought we could just weld it up. But it's badly impregnated with oil and can't be repaired. If we tried, the metal would just come apart.

So, rather than have a machinist try to copy the heater and then build it, we decided to redesign the original using our NextEngine 3D scanner and Dimension 3D printer . These incredible devices allow you to make the form you need to create almost any part. The scanner can measure about 50,000 points per second at a density of 160,000 dots per inch (dpi) to create a highly detailed digital model. The 3D printer makes an exact copy of a part in plastic, which we then send out to create a mold. Some machines can even make a replacement part in cobalt-chrome with the direct laser sintering process. Just feed a plastic wire--for a steel part you use metal wire--into the appropriate laser cutter.

Inside the printer, the print head goes back and forth, back and forth, putting on layer after layer of plastic to form a 3D part. If there are any irregularities in the originals, you can remove them using software. Once the model is finished, any excess support material between moving parts is dissolved in a water-based solution. Complexity doesn't matter, but the size of the object does determine the length of the process. Making a little part might take 5 hours. The White's feedwater heater required 33 hours.

Any antique car part can be reproduced with these machines--pieces of trim, elaborately etched and even scrolled door handles. If you have an original, you can copy it. Or you can design a replacement on the computer, and the 3D printer makes it for you.
People say, "Why not just give the part to your machinist to make?" Well, if the machinist makes it wrong, you still have to pay for it. The scanner allows you to make an exact copy in plastic, fit it and see that it's correct. Even when you take plans to a machinist, it can be tricky. Say the part must be 3 mm thick here and 5 mm there. You get it back and then, "Oh no, it doesn't fit; it's too thick," or "It's too thin." My setup lets you create the perfect part. And you could press the button again and again--and keep making the part--twice the size, half-size, whatever you need. If you have a part that's worn away, or has lost a big chunk of metal, you can fill in that missing link on the computer. Then you make the part in plastic and have a machinist make a copy based on that example. Or you can do what we do--input that program into a Fadal CNC machine; it reads the dimensions and replicates an exact metal copy.

Some guys are so used to working in the traditional ways. They're old-school. So they've never seen this new technology in use--in fact, they're not even aware it exists. When you work on old cars, you tend to work with old machinery like lathes, milling machines or English wheels. When someone tells you that you can take a crescent wrench, for example, scan it, then press a button, copy it, and make a new wrench, these guys say, "Well, that's not possible. You can't make the little wheel that moves the claw in and out. You'd have to make it in two sections."

But they're wrong. You can duplicate the whole tool.

They stand in front of the machine and watch a wrench being made, and they still don't believe it. It's like The Jetsons. George Jetson would say, "I want a steak dinner." He'd press a button and the meal would come out of the machine, with the roasted potatoes and everything, all on one plate. We may not have the instant steak dinner yet--but my NextEngine system is like the car-guy equivalent.

If you had a one-off Ferrari engine, you could scan each part and then re-create the entire motor. Right now, we're scanning a Duesenberg body. It's a classic example of high tech melding with old tech. There are cars sitting in garages around the country, and they haven't moved in years for lack of some unobtainable part. Now they can hit the road once more, thanks to this technology.

My 1907 White engine would never have run again because its slide valve (or D-valve) was shot. We built that part, and now the car is back on the street.

Let's say you have an older Cadillac or a Packard, and you can't get one of those beautifully ornate door handles. You could go to the big swap meet in Hershey, Pa., every day for the rest of your life and never find it. Or you could take the one on the left side of your car, copy it, use the computer to reverse it, and put that new part on the other side.

It's an amazingly versatile technology. My EcoJet supercar needed air-conditioning ducts. We used plastic parts we designed, right out of the 3D copier. We didn't have to make these scoops out of aluminum--plastic is what they use in a real car. And the finished ones look like factory production pieces.

When I was in high school, a friend's father bought the new Pulsar LED watch. He paid $2200 for it. It had a red face; you pressed a button, it lit up and gave you the time. The next year I bought a similar watch from Texas Instruments for $19.99. I went over and showed it to my friend's dad, and he was sooo angry.

The NextEngine scanner costs $2995. The Dimension uPrint Personal 3D printer is now under $15,000. That's not cheap. But this technology used to cost 10 times that amount. And I think the price will come down even more.

These machines are not suited for mass production, but they work well for rapid prototyping. Just as eBay has made many swap meets go away, this machine could eliminate the need to go to eBay for parts. Think about it: What old part do you want to make?
