A BBC correspondent who visited the northern town of Saraqeb was told by eyewitnesses that government helicopters had dropped at least two devices containing poisonous gas. The government has vehemently denied claims it has used chemical agents. The US has warned that such a development would be a "red line" for possible intervention. However, President Barack Obama has said the current intelligence on possible chemical weapon usage did not constitute sufficient proof. 'Suffocating smell' In April, Saraqeb, a town south-west of Aleppo, came under artillery bombardment from government positions. Doctors at the local hospital told the BBC's Ian Pannell they had admitted eight people suffering from breathing problems. Some were vomiting and others had constricted pupils, they said. One woman, Maryam Khatib, later died. A number of videos passed to the BBC appear to support these claims, but it is impossible to independently verify them. Mrs Khatib's son Mohammed had rushed to the scene to help his mother and was also injured in the attack.Syria's chemical weapons The CIA believes Syria has had a chemical weapons programme "for years and already has a stockpile of CW agents which can be delivered by aircraft, ballistic missile, and artillery rockets" Syria is believed to possess mustard gas and sarin, a highly toxic nerve agent The CIA also believes that Syria has attempted to develop more toxic and more persistent nerve agents, such as VX gas A report citing Turkish, Arab and Western intelligence agencies put Syria's stockpile at approximately 1,000 tonnes of chemical weapons, stored in 50 towns and cities Syria has not signed the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) or ratified the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) "It was a horrible, suffocating smell. You couldn't breathe at all. You'd feel like you were dead. You couldn't even see. I couldn't see anything for three or four days," Mr Khatib told the BBC. A doctor who treated Mrs Khatib said her symptoms corresponded to organophosphate poisoning and that samples had been sent for testing. One device was said to have landed on the outskirts of Saraqeb, with eyewitnesses describing a box-like container, with a hollow concrete casing inside. In another video, a rebel fighter holds a canister said to be hidden inside the devices. Witnesses claim there were two in each container. Another video shows parts of a canister on the ground, surrounded by white powder. The BBC has been told that samples from the scene and from the alleged victims have been sent to Britain, France, Turkey and America for testing. Competing claims Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former commanding officer at the UK's Joint Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Regiment, said the testimony and evidence from Saraqeb was "strong, albeit incomplete". Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, chemical weapons expert: "I gauge that they're not making it up." In Saraqeb and in three similar events in Syria in recent weeks, "people have got ill and died and their symptoms are what we would expect to see from a nerve type of agent, be it sarin or be it organophosphate," Mr de Bretton-Gordon said. On the available evidence, recent attacks in Otaybeh to the east of Damascus, in Adra near the town of Douma, and in the Sheikh Maqsoud district of Aleppo appear "virtually identical" to what happened in Saraqeb, according to Mr de Bretton-Gordon. Mr de Bretton-Gordon has not visited the site or tested any of the alleged evidence but was given full access to the material gathered by the BBC. Both the US and UK have spoken of growing evidence that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons. Rebel fighters have also been accused of using them. They also have denied this. In March, Syria's government and opposition called for an inquiry into an alleged chemical weapon attack in Khan al-Assal in the north of Syria which killed at least 27 people, with both sides blaming each other. A 15-strong UN team headed by a Swedish scientist, Ake Sellstrom, has been assembled to investigate the claims. However, the Syrian government has refused the team access. Syrian officials have been quoted as saying they want the team to look into the incident in Khan al-Assal, but the team has requested unconditional access with the right to inquire into all credible allegations. Twelve years on and Media Lens-the brainchild of writer David Edwards, a former manager in sales and marketing, and David Cromwell, a physicist by background-has established itself as the UK's media watchdog. There's no doubting the impact they have made. "Without their meticulous and humane analysis, the full gravity of the debacles of Iraq and Afghanistan might have been consigned to bad journalism's first draft of bad history," is the verdict of veteran reporter and filmmaker John Pilger. It's been an eventful twelve years. In addition to the "debacles" of Iraq and Afghanistan, we've had the (ongoing) menacing of Iran on account of an unproven nuclear-weapons program and Israeli military assaults on Lebanon in 2006 and on Gaza in 2008 and again in 2012. Add in the global financial crash of 2008, and there's been plenty to keep the two Davids occupied. David Cromwell's new book, Why Are We The Good Guys? , discusses these events and the work that he and Edwards have done to counter the "elite-friendly value assumptions and judgements" that characterize their coverage in Britain. Although he is clearly a man of the left-his working-class childhood was an "interesting mix of Catholic and Communist" influences-Cromwell's not one to be deceived by labels, an important skill to possess in an age when wars are sold as "humanitarian interventions" to gain support from liberals. Media Lens has been outspoken, when the need arises, in its critique of so-called liberal-left media. Many on the British center-left give the BBC a free pass because they have swallowed the line that the organization is somehow "left-wing." Yet Cromwell and Edwards have shown that when it comes to propagandizing for illegal wars and peddling establishment views, the BBC has at least as bad a record as commercial news networks. When I caught up with David to talk to him about his new book, the BBC was in the middle of what has been described by some as the biggest crisis in its 90-year history: the resignation of its Director-General and other bigwigs after the fallout from a "Newsnight" program on child abuse. But while heads rolled over the state-owned broadcaster getting allegations wrong on just one program, Cromwell points out that the BBC was never held accountable for the role it played in the lead up to the Iraq War. "There was no such pressure for senior BBC staff to go over the broadcaster's systemic failure to challenge US-UK propaganda over Iraq's non-existent WMD. This media failure paved the way towards war in Iraq and the subsequent brutal and bloody occupation. Instead of responsible public-service journalism, BBC News provides a reliable conduit for government propaganda, most notably the state's supposedly benign intentions in foreign wars and international relations. That is the daily news diet we are all spoon-fed." No such presumption of good faith applies when journalists discuss the actions of countries that don't toe the Washington line. "It is, of course, fine for journalists in the West to point to the crimes of official enemies and to mock them for their transparent propaganda efforts. Thus, the BBC's Emily Maitlis was able to introduce the flagship television program 'Newsnight' with a touch of sardonic wit: 'Hello, good evening. The Russians are calling it a "peace enforcement operation." It's the kind of Newspeak that would make George Orwell proud.' "Maitlis was referring to the invasion of Russian forces into the Georgian province of South Ossetia in August 2008. By contrast, imagine a BBC presenter referring skeptically to the government's claim of a 'peace enforcement operation' for the West's invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq, or Libya and describing such language as 'the kind of newspeak that would make George Orwell proud.' It just would not happen." I ask Cromwell how he would respond to those who say that Media Lens should devote all its energies on attacking neocon "uber -hawks rather than criticizing the liberal media, which might agree with the group's standpoints, say, 70 percent of the time. "Media Lens has indeed spent more time analyzing the liberal media than right-wing outlets. Why? Because the liberal media is often regarded as the outlets where the most progressive and the most challenging views can be seen and heard. If you like, it's one end of the acceptable spectrum of news and views. But if even here there are severe limits on permissible challenges to state-corporate power, what does that say about society generally? It's like a litmus test for dissent." Cromwell believes that the role of the media in promoting the doctrine of "liberal interventionism" has been absolutely crucial. "If the public was better informed, and not so often misled by those in power, there would likely be a stronger rein on the governing elite. But it's not happening. A major reason for this is that the corporate media acts as an echo chamber and amplifier of government propaganda. Even when challenged, senior journalists say that their role is to report what those in power say and do-even what they 'think.' "For example, when the BBC's Nick Robinson was the ITN political editor, he wrote of the war in Iraq: In the run-up to the conflict, I and many of my colleagues, were bombarded with complaints that we were acting as mouthpieces for Mr Blair. Why, the complainants demanded to know, did we report without question his warning that Saddam was a threat? Hadn't we read what Scott Ritter had said or Hans Blix? I always replied in the same way. It was my job to report what those in power were doing or thinking... . That is all someone in my sort of job can do. "Robinson performs the same compliant role today as political editor for the BBC," Cromwell says. In the '90s we saw an informal alliance formed between neoconservatives and progressives united behind their support for "liberal intervention." I ask Cromwell if he thinks that a similar alliance can be formed between the antiwar left and the antiwar right. "I'd be wary of an overt alliance with anyone, right-wing or otherwise, who espouses other views that I might find distasteful. But certainly traditional conservatives should be-and often are-vehemently opposed to what goes by the benign-sounding term 'neo-liberalism,' which I unpack in the book." One of the most riveting chapters in Cromwell's book is called "Beyond Indifference," in which he talks about his philosophical influences. He concludes-rather like Aldous Huxley-that if we do want to "free ourselves" and live better lives, it all starts with undertaking "small acts of kindness for others." And in contrast, he writes, Violence feeds on violence, as wise people have known for thousands of years. For example, if brutal state repression is met by violence from some elements of society, it provides an excuse for state forces to ramp up fire-power and crush dissent with even more brutal and widespread violence. The current state of Permanent War can only be ended by people coming together peacefully to overcome state power. Cromwell certainly thinks that in challenging elite state propaganda we're in a better position now than we were when Media Lens began in 2001. "One positive thing I've noticed is that more people are challenging the media, at least judging by the messages posted on our board and Facebook page, the emails we get and the tweets we receive. Often, even before we've worked up a media alert, we've been beaten to it by our readers-although, to be fair to ourselves, we do typically wait a few days or longer to see how an event is being played out in the media. Ideally, I would hope that in five years' time there would be less need for Media Lens to be on the internet 'haranguing' and 'vilifying' journalists, as skeptics and opponents sometimes say! Today, we tend to believe that world Jewry's transition towards support for Israel followed the 1967 war though some might argue that already in 1948, American Jews manifested a growing support for Zionism. However, this rabbinical pronouncement proves that as early as 1942, the American Jewish religious establishment was already deeply Zionist. And if this is not enough, the rabbis also regarded Zionism as the 'implementation' of Judaism. Seemingly, already then, the peak of World War two, the overwhelming majority of American Rabbis regarded Zionism, not only as fully consistent with Judaism, but as a "logical expression and implementation of it." In spite of the fact that early Zionist leaders were largely secular and the East European Jewish settler waves were driven by Jewish socialist ideology, the rabbis contend that "Zionism is not a secularist movement. It has its origins and roots in the authoritative religious texts of Judaism. Those rabbis were not a bunch of ignoramuses. Thread Number One: England The watershed for Europe was the Reformation. Henry VIII of England was in need of a son and a new wife. Thomas Cromwell was happy to oblige. The split away from the old church, brought the Bible into prominence and thereby increased Jewish influence. After an embargo of almost 400 years, Jews were allowed to return to England in 1656 thanks to a "financial arrangement" between Oliver Cromwell and the Jewish Sanhedrin. As a "National Debt" is an essential first ingredient of financial control, and wars are the prime cause of debt, it took only to 1693 before England found herself unable to meet her commitments, thanks to the continental wars of William of Orange which had been financed by the Jewish moneylenders of Amsterdam. Three VT contributors have been killed while reporting in zones of conflict. One was kidnapped and tortured by Israelis, an issue now before the International Criminal Court at The Hague. Another, an Israeli citizen of Jewish ethnicity, is under "sentence of death for honesty in journalism," a common form of recognition in Israel. As for the AP and "others," we are fully behind government efforts to investigate them. We have found the "Lame Stream News" isn't quite so innocent. Minimally, anyone who hasn't been living under a rock knows the news delivered to the undiscerning American, Brit, German, Canadian or what have you is pure propaganda. What few realize is that the acts of domestic terrorism know openly accepted as "false flag attacks," certainly Sandy Hook and Boston, and 9/11 most of all, would be impossible without full complicity by the press. If the government wants to stop domestic terrorism, they are going to have to wiretap the LSN, catching the text messages, emails and phone calls from the spy organizations and terrorist groups that we believe are regularly in contact with the press. Key press assets are notified in advance of attacks so that stories can quickly be "spun" to blame the "favor of the month" patsy and to cover up blunders. On 9/11, when Building 7 collapsed though undamaged, the BBC had predicted that collapse 20 minutes in advance by mistakenly getting the timing of the demolition schedule wrong. They had been notified in advance. To any idiot, this has to be obvious: The BBC was working directly with the terrorists. No other explanation is possible. If you can think of one, let me know. It is impossible to defend the United States from terrorism and espionage without running surveillance on terrorist groups and foreign spies. America's press qualifies on both counts. There is more than conclusive evidence that the press takes direction from AIPAC/ADL, long under investigation/indictment for espionage. Eighty five percent of America's press is controlled by corporations involved in war profiteering. 95% of the individuals who manage our news are either Israeli citizens or qualify for Israeli citizenship. This is not to say that all are controlled but as the truth never gets out and wrongdoers are openly assisted and covered for by the press, perhaps its time we took a look at them. TEA PARTY IRS TROUBLES Let's face it, the Tea Party is funded by money laundered into the country through "Citizens united." The funding that put Tea Party candidates in office was money from international criminal cartels, drugs, prostitution, human trafficking, human organ theft and their cut of the massive financial crimes that their policies defend while they sit on their fat behinds in congress. As for domestic contributions, most come from Sheldon Adelson, the gambling boss, likeable old character though he is, and the ultra-evil Koch brothers, some of the biggest market scamsters in the world. It doesn't take a genius to note that the Tea Party serves and agenda that demonstrates ties to organized crime, terrorist organizations and that it is broadly aligned with financial wrongdoing. This is exactly the kind of group I want the IRS investigating. They are only being rational: "Where there's smoke, there's fire." NUTTY CONSPIRACY FREAKS Let's face it, the LSM or LSP, (Lame Stream Media or Lame Stream Press, pick one), is not worth defending. They are enemies of the United States, work directly with the groups that have destroyed much of the world and, were I to have my way, I would put many in prison or worse. There is no major news agency that isn't openly complicit in acts of treason. As for the Tea Party, the Wall Street dominated attempt to derail any legitimate attempt to restore democracy in America, who cares if the IRS goes after them. They are drowning in dirty money and should well be paying taxes or doing jail time for tax evasion. What I would like to know is this, why does anyone care when our government finally starts going after the people all of us really hate? It makes me happy. You say going after them is "fascism?" SYRIAN NUKE On or about May 4, 2013, we have conclusive evidence that a nuclear weapon was used against Syria. Sources tell us that it was one of two nuclear "bunker buster" weapons illegally transferred to Israel, stolen by agents of the Department of Homeland Security. (If only I were kidding...) The last statement, however, is NOT confirmed, not the use of the these particular weapons nor that Israel was responsible for the attack. However, the nuclear attack was concurrent with an Israeli artillery barrage against Syrian forces. The confirmed nuclear attack, a weapon that could have been easily delivered by a number of platforms, was against an underground facility. Syria has gone to considerable lengths to deny an attack that was filmed and that there is medical confirmation of as well. We then ask, what was the facility and why the silence? STRANGE BRITAIN On January 18, 2013, a double-lorry stopped outside a pub in Somerset. The name on the side said Insight Trans Logistics. The pub is a known "watering hole" for a major arms trafficker known to trade in nuclear technology and worse. The cargo was identified as containers for two nuclear weapons. The cargo was to be loaded for shipment to Gibraltar. When this incident was reported to the security services, the individual reporting, someone with decades of experience handling nuclear weapons, was told to remain silent. I leave the "dots" unconnected. SYRIAN VOTE IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY However the conflict in Syria began, the situation there has deteriorated into something "unholy." I have deep respect for legitimate opposition forces that wish for a change in the Syrian government. Toward that end, I have worked with others to organize a strong delegation to Damascus to begin a peaceful reconciliation, one that is "reality based" and is respectful of the survival of all the Syrian people. Others want Syria to go the way of Iraq or worse. Syria is to be a platform for isolating and crushing Lebanon, for destabilizing Iraq under the guise of Kurdish nationalism (a people I care deeply for) and imposing a region-wide tyranny, financed by reactionary Arab royalty and managed by Zionist fanatics. World war will be the result. The vote in the UN General Assembly, pushed by Qatar and the Saudi's, a vote even Israel refused to take part in, was a shameful attempt to push forward a sick agenda by the same nations that sent tanks into Bahrain to suppress freedom loving people fighting against a vicious and tyrannical state. No rational person could look on the goals of an Israeli-Saudi coalition and not be more than a bit dismayed to find two supposed enemies have been working together for decades. Imagine the mischief the LSM has had to cover up for this "axis of evil." Anyone that thinks Russia and China will watch Syria be taken down, them and then Iran, must know something the rest of us don't. NIGERIA In 2011 I was in Nigeria for the inauguration of Goodluck Jonathan. While there, Harry Erivona and I and our associates met with the president and the Chief of Security, top police and counter-terrorism officials and leaders in banking and the national oil companies. We had been invited to lay out plans for modernizing Nigeria, uniting the country and preventing the civil war now ravaging the nation. Key officials in Nigeria were informed, very specifically, of the timeline for terrorist bombings, training and supplying Boko Harum and flooding the region with jihadists. We had been in Nigeria before, same message, 2008. Nigeria is a great country, the real key to African security and, with that, very much the real security of the United States. We watched intelligence agencies from Europe and "elsewhere" flood into Niger under the guise of dealing with the conflict in Mali. While there, they were pouring weapons into Nigeria and supporting terror cells throughout the country. Then, of course, the same groups were also sitting in hotels in Abuja, with suitcases of cash to bribe officials, ready to take fat contracts to fight the terrorists they had sent. Khalid al Hamad, also known as Abu Sakkar, confirmed in an interview with Time magazine he was the man in the video and revealed he had another as-yet-unreleased graphic propaganda showing him sawing a government soldier into pieces. He claimed the organ seen in the video was in fact one of the man's lungs - a claim substantiated by a surgeon who Time showed the footage to. Earlier, Hamad was identified by the Human Rights Watch as a rebel commander with the Homs-based Farouk Brigades who had broken away from the brigades for a smaller organization. In one of the more shocking videos released in the Syrian civil war, Abu Sakkar is seen cutting organs out of a dead soldier and biting into his heart. Addressing the camera as he ripped the flesh, Abu Sakkar said: "I swear to God we will eat your hearts and your livers," he warned President Bashar Assad's forces as his men cheered. Hamad told Time that the dead soldier in the video had footage on his mobile phone of him abusing and humiliating a naked women and her two daughters. He also revealed there is another video a showing him sawing a government soldier into pieces. "In the clip I am sawing another Shabiha (pro-government militiaman) with a saw. The saw we use to cut trees. I sawed him in small pieces and large ones." In previous clips, Abu Sakkar is seen firing rockets at Shiite villages in the Lebanon border area. Peter Bouckaert of the Human Rights Watch said the video was filmed on March 26 in the ruins of a village between Homs and Qusayr. Abu Sakkar is considered one of the top commanders in the area where a crucial battle is being waged.
