Venezuela runs out of toilet paper - The revolution will provide!!

FIRST milk, butter, coffee and cornmeal ran short. Now Venezuela is running out of the most basic of necessities - toilet paper.

Blaming political opponents for the shortfall, as it does for other shortages, the embattled socialist government says it will import 50 million rolls to boost supplies.

That was little comfort to consumers struggling to find toilet paper yesterday.

"This is the last straw," said Manuel Fagundes, a shopper hunting for tissue in downtown Caracas. "I'm 71 years old and this is the first time I've seen this."

One supermarket visited by The Associated Press in the capital was out of toilet paper. Another had just received a fresh batch, and it quickly filled up with shoppers as the word spread.

"I've been looking for it for two weeks," said Cristina Ramos. "I was told that they had some here and now I'm in line."

Economists say Venezuela's shortages stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government's controls on foreign currency.

"State-controlled prices - prices that are set below market-clearing price - always result in shortages. The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union," said Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University.

President Nicolas Maduro, who was selected by the dying Hugo Chavez to carry on his "Bolivarian revolution," claims that anti-government forces, including the private sector, are causing the shortages in an effort to destabilize the country.

The government this week announced it would import 760,000 tonnes of food and 50 million rolls of toilet paper.

Commerce Minister Alejandro Fleming blamed the shortage of toilet tissue on "excessive demand" built up as a result of "a media campaign that has been generated to disrupt the country".

"The revolution will bring the country the equivalent of 50 million rolls of toilet paper," he was quoted as saying Tuesday by state news agency AVN. "We are going to saturate the market so that our people calm down."

Finance Minister Nelson Merentes said the government was also addressing the lack of foreign currency, which has resulted in the suspension of foreign supplies of raw materials, equipment and spare parts to Venezuelan companies, disrupting their production.

"We are making progress ... we have to work very hard," Mr Merentes told reporters.

Many factories operate at half capacity because the currency controls make it hard for them to pay for imported parts and materials. Business leaders say some companies verge on bankruptcy because they cannot extend lines of credit with foreign suppliers.

Mr Merentes said the government had met the US dollar requests of some 1500 small- and medium-sized companies facing supply problems, and was reviewing requests from a similar number of larger companies.

Mr Chavez imposed currency controls a decade ago trying to stem capital flight as his government expropriated large land parcels and dozens of businesses.

Anointed by Chavez as his successor before the president died from cancer, Mr Maduro won a close presidential election April 14 against opposition candidate Henrique Capriles, who refused to accept the result, claiming Mr Maduro won through fraud and voter intimidation. He filed a complaint to the Supreme Court, asking for the vote to be annulled, though that's highly unlikely to happen since the court is packed with government-friendly justices.

Patience is wearing thin among consumers who face shortages and long lines at supermarkets and pharmacies. Last month, Venezuela's scarcity index reached its highest level since 2009, while the 12-month inflation rate has risen to nearly 30 per cent. Shoppers often spend several days looking for basic items, and stock up when they find them.

Mr Fleming, the commerce minister, said monthly consumption of toilet paper was normally 125 million rolls, but that current demand "leads us to think that 40 million more are required".

"We will bring in 50 million to show those groups that they won't make us bow down," he said.

Authorities learn of deadly gang mission.

A street gang directive ordering a hit squad to kill
law enforcement officers was intercepted by the Cook County Sheriff's
Intelligence unit.

The deadly order, which came via the Cook County Jail grapevine, claims
the leadership of the Satan Disciples street gang has called for the
formation of an assassination unit entitled the "Guerilla Mafia Cartel"
which would be assigned the deadly mission.

The Sheriff's Intelligence Center gleaned word of the directive and
dispatched a "request for information" last week alerting the Chicago
Police Department and the FBI.
"We had enough information to deem it necessary to put an alert out to other law enforcement agencies," said Frank Bilecki, Cook County sheriff spokesman.

The directive stated the sheriff's
office "has learned of a Satan Disciples "Hit Squad" forming from within
the gang which has reportedly been sanctioned by the Satan Disciples
senior leadership."The 'Hit Squad' specific purpose is to kill a law enforcement officer. is reportedly called 'the Guerilla Mafia Cartel.'"

A subsequent "officer safety alert" was dispatched by the Chicago Police Department.

"The sheriff's department deemed this
important enough to dispatch the alert to 132 Cook County municipalities
-- as well as the Chicago Police Department and the FBI," said Bilecki.
"This information is raw and very preliminary," said a top Chicago police source. "But it is better to be safe than sorry."

Ald. Ed Burke,
a former Chicago cop, also received the safety alert and praised the
police intelligence for sharing it both locally and statewide.
"I think law enforcement agencies are
becoming more sensitive to the importance of sharing information -
especially after what happened in Boston, where the FBI was faulted for
not sharing the intelligence they had on the marathon bomber with the
Boston police," Burke told Sneed.
"The cooperation we have with local,
county, and statewide agencies is open and free flowing and not an
example of the turf jealousies that marked the Boston failure."
The Sheriff's Intelligence Center, which was formed by Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart
six months ago, gathers crime intelligence inside and outside the walls
of Cook County Jail and acts as a repository of crime incidents
countywide.
"It's a tool we provide for law enforcement which allows for more of a global approach," said Bilecki.

"Splinter gangs are breaking off from
more established street gangs and not following the more traditional
rules," he said. "There are also factions of street gangs. For instance,
the Latin Saints are a faction of the Satan Disciples."
In April, Michael Orozco, 14, was fatally shot in the Pilsen neighborhood, allegedly by a reputed Latin Saints gang member.

The primary suspect, Javier Garza, was charged with first-degree murder. Damien Garza, who allegedly drove the getaway car, was also arrested and held on a $1 million bond.

Prosecutors claim the two suspects, both
reputed members of the Latin Saints, drove into Satan Disciple
territory specifically to kill a rival gang member as payback for the
death of Javier Garza's father in 2001.
Police claim Orozco was a gang member, which his mother denied.

"It's not uncommon for police to be
threatened, but good, timely and actionable intelligence helps us deal
with threats which could be deadly serious," said Bilecki.
"Saving the life of a law enforcement officer who is saving lives every day should always be a top priority."

ANNA News have contributed with a large number of raw videos about the Syrian crisis, their reporters are trusted and when embedded with SAA troops they name the names correctly, they don't have difficulties naming the exact unit names and explaining the situation unlike western journalists who fail to know the difference between different SAA units, security, university students, charity organizations and even public workers calling them all Assad troops!.

Keith aka Skeeter is living totally off the grid. Starting with a raw plot of land, he built his house from scratch, dug a well, created a solar power system and is completely responsible for all his waste. Keith is a good example of someone who got tired of paying utilities and mortgages to live on earth. He took matters into his own hands and decided to be as independent as possible. Deciding to live out in the wilderness is one way to go off the grid. Great Story.

Mothers Day Parade Shooting - at least 17 injured

Gunmen opened fire on dozens of people marching in a Mother's Day second-line parade in New Orleans on Sunday, wounding at least 17 people, police said.

Police spokeswoman Remi Braden said in an email that many of the 17 victims were grazed and most of the wounds weren't life-threatening. No deaths were reported.

In one of the raw videos, an eye witness (second video) describes how some gunmen missed the person they were shooting at.

Officers were interspersed with the marchers, which is routine for such events. As many as 400 people joined in the procession that stretched for about 3 blocks, though only half that many were in the immediate vicinity of the shooting, Serpas said.

Police saw three suspects running from the scene in the city's 7th Ward neighborhood. No arrests had been made as of late afternoon.

Second-line parades are loose processions in which people dance down the street, often following behind a brass band. They can be impromptu or planned and are sometimes described as moving block parties.

A social club called The Original Big 7 organized Sunday's event. The group was founded in 1996 at the Saint Bernard housing projects, according to its MySpace page.

The neighborhood where the shooting happened was a mix of low-income and middle-class row houses, some boarded up. As of last year, the neighborhood's population was about 60 percent of its pre-Hurricane Katrina level.

Police vowed to make swift arrests. Serpas said it wasn't clear if particular people in the second line were targeted, or if the shots were fired in a random fashion.

"We'll get them. We have good resources in this neighborhood," Serpas said.

In the late afternoon, the scene was taped off and police had placed bullet casing markers in at least 10 spots.
