From what I can gather, the Afghans are fighting mad over the new Pak outpost (built on Afghan soil) as seen in the video -ed.

01 May 2013, 10:45 pm
Heavy clashes have been reported between Afghan and Pakistani security forces in Goshta district of eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday evening.

According to reports clashes are still going on between the two sides and there are no reports regarding the casualties as a result of the clashes.

An Afghan security official speaking on the condition of anonymity said clashes were started by Pakistani military in a bid to take control of the newly built gates inside the Afghan soil.

The source further added Afghan security have managed to destroy a number of the Pakistani military installations inside the Afghan soil during the clashes.

Another Afghan police officer also said that Pakistani troops have left and move from their security check posts created inside the Afghan soil.

He said one of the security check post of the Pakistani troops have been completedly damaged during the clashes and clashes between the sides are still going on.

In the meantime reports from eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan suggest that Afghan national army soldiers have left for Goshta district to provide support for the Afghan security forces engaging Pakistani troops.

Kabul seeks US help in retaking Pak border posts

KABUL : President Hamid Karzai has written a letter to his US counterpart Barack Obama, seeking America's help in retaking nearly a dozen border security posts that were captured by Pakistani forces in eastern Nangarhar province a decade ago, an official said on Sunday.

Citing reports compiled by Afghan officials who had been tasked with investigating Pakistan forces' advancement, Karzai wrote the issue was sensitive because US troops had been involved in paving the ground for the Pakistanis to capture the posts in Gushta, said Abdul Karim Khurram, the president's chief of staff.

He said the US troops had established the 11 posts to keep an eye on militants crossing the border into Afghanistan from Pakistan. He added Karzai had urged Obama to back Afghanistan's efforts in regaining control of the checkpoints.

It is believed US troops had helped Pakistanis occupy the posts instead of handing them over to Afghan border forces.

Under a strategic agreement between the allies, the US will help Afghanistan in case it is attacked from outside. Both countries are also in talks over signing a bilateral security agreement.

Earlier this month, there were reports that Pakistani military had erected a new security gate in Goshta district near the Durand Line. The reports sparked protests in Afghanistan and further deteriorated the already strained relations between the neighbours.

Deputy Foreign Minister Javed Lodin summoned the Pakistani ambassador to lodge a protest over the border gate, expressing grave concern over the unilateral construction of new military installations along the frontier.

Although the Ministry of Defence says Pakistani officials have promised to remove the gate, a Pajhwok reporter recently visited the site and saw a new gate being established 200 metres behind the old one.

To discuss the situation, a high-level Afghan delegation earlier this month visited Rawalpindi, where the Pakistani Army is headquartered. After the meeting, Pakistan said border issues with Afghanistan had been resolved.

HIV/AIDS Sky rocket in Pakistan

KARACHI Karachi and Larkana have the highest prevalence of HIV in
female sex workers (FSWs), according to the findings of a recent survey
by the National Aids Control Programme.

The survey says that 377 FSWs from Karachi and 375 from Larkana were
tested for HIV/Aids, of whom seven each from the two cities (1.9 per
cent) turned out to be positive. They were followed by Haripur (0.9 per
cent), Sukkur (0.8 per cent), DG Khan (0.5 per cent), Sargodha and
Multan (0.3 per cent). No HIV cases were found in Rawalpindi,
Faisalabad, Peshawar and Quetta.

The average prevalence of HIV in FSWs, however, was low. A total of 27
FSWs tested HIV positive for an overall weighted prevalence of 0.8 per
cent. The survey report said the highest number of FSWs was estimated in
Karachi (25,399), closely followed by 23,766 in Lahore. More than 56
per cent of the total FSW population of 89,178 in 15 major cities was
mapped in Karachi and Lahore.

Across all cities, the average age of FSWs was 26.9 years. Overall, 12.3
per cent of FSWs were aged 15-19 years. They had been working as sex
workers for an average of 5.3 years and those who worked in brothels
involved in the trade at even younger age and worked longer (average 9.7
per cent) than other FSWs.

A majority of FSWs (63.7 per cent) were married, and a small proportion
was either widowed (3.5 per cent) or divorced (eight per cent). A
majority (85 per cent) of FSWs had children with 18.5 per cent reporting
at least five children.

Illiteracy in the FSWs was witnessed as a major curse as 50.6 per cent
of them were found illiterate, and most illiterate (64 per cent) were
found in brothels. Only 23.5 per cent of them had a source of income
other than sex work, with FSWs who solicit clients through mobilephones
being most likely to have other sources of income. Their monthly average
income reported was Rs16,000, but as they get older the income
decreases.

Only 33 per cent of the FSWs reported that they always used
contraceptives with their clients and most of them were brothel-based.
Their number was the highest in Larkana (53 per cent), followed by
Karachi (48 per cent). The lowest ratio was reported in Sukkur (five per
cent).

About 80.4 per cent of the FSWs had heard of HIV and/or Aids, with
brothel-based sex workers reporting the highest level (91 per cent) of
awareness. Some 94 per cent of them had heard of HIV and/or Aids and
knew that HIV could be transmitted by sexual intercourse, but fewer than
one-third knew that HIV could be transmitted through injuries by sharp
instruments or needles or syringes and only 13.4 per cent knew about
mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Only 15.7 per cent of the FSWs had ever been tested for HIV and 22.5 per
cent knew where HIV testing services were available. With the exception
of Larkana and Karachi, fewer than one-third of the FSWs were aware of
services in their cities.

Fight Against Militants in Pakistan Leads to Advanced Treatments for Wounded

RAWALPINDI, PAKISTAN - Pakistan has lost more than 5,000 security personnel in the fight against terrorists and militants since 2001. The campaign has also wounded some 10,000 regular and paramilitary troops. The steep toll has resulted in improved care at the army's top rehab center in Rawalpindi, where doctors help troops get back on their feet.

These are small, but significant steps taken by Aman Ullah, who lost both of his legs more than a year ago in Khyber, a volatile tribal district on the Afghan border.

The 23-year-old Aman Ullah is one of the thousands of Pakistani soldiers coping with wounds sustained in Pakistan's ongoing fight against militant groups. Most are wounded by blasts from improvised explosive devices or IEDs.

"I was part of FC, you know, the Frontier Corps convoy when a roadside IED planted in a vehicle exploded. I lost both my legs and received multiple injuries all around my body," said Ullah.

"We were engaged in an operation against extremists in the Mohmand agency when one of their bullets hit me in the leg and I lost it," explained Arif Hussain, another patient recovering from his injuries.

After recovering from major surgeries at Rawalpindi's Armed Forces Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine (AFIRM), Aman Ullah and several colleagues are now hoping to take part in the next Paralympics.

Their inspiration is South African Oscar Pistorius, who became the first double amputee Olympian in London last year - long before he faced charges of murder.

"When I saw the boy from South Africa on television racing with a horse and competing in the games I decided that Inshallah next year I will also do that and compete with that young man," Ullah added.

Head of the army-run rehabilitation center, Major-General Akhtar Waheed, is proud of the progress made in treating patients with multiple amputations. "I had a few patients with three amputations and one patient with four limb amputations. So I think you have seen them in today's event and they are not less than any normal person," he said.

The experience of treating thousands of patients over the years has led to improved surgical practices, more useful artificial limbs and better facilities to help patients again stand on their feet. With army operations continuing in Pakistan's turbulent tribal districts, there are plans to further expand the facility.

The attack followed altercation between a young Christian and a Islamic barber: the Muslim insulted Christianity and then reported the boy for blasphemy. The mob looted, stoned, doused in acid and then burned the Christian settlement. Local imam: "We'll find the Christian and kill him."
Lahore (AsiaNews) - This morning, an angry mob set fire to over 100 homes in the Joseph Colony Christian settlement, near Badami Bah (Lahore). Residents were forced to flee and at least 35 people were injured. The attack resulted from an accusation of blasphemy registered against one of the settlement residents, Sawan Masih, who yesterday afternoon had an altercation with a Muslim.According to initial reports, the 26 year old Christian went to the Islamic barber for a haircut, but the store owner, Imran Shahid, refused to serve him. A heated discussion arose between the two, and the Muslim reportedly used offensive words about Christianity.

Together with other people, Shahid then went to the nearby police station, the group recorded a charge of blasphemy against Masih (art.295C), arguing that the young man was drunk and had insulted the Prophet Muhammad. Shortly after, the police arrested the Christian. The maximum penalty under that law is life imprisonment.

The anger of the Islamic community did not subside however, and this morning a large group of people ransacked Joseph Colony, then set fire to the homes. "We were working like every day - Salamat Masih, a resident of the settlement told AsiaNews - when we started to hear a noise, and suddenly a wall of people fell upon the colony. They threw acid and stoned our houses, then set them on fire. The authorities intervened only when everything was destroyed". The local imam said Sawan will be killed when found.

Human rights associations, such as Masihi Foundation and Life for All rushed to the scene to help the victims. For Msgr. Rufin Anthony, bishop of Islamabad-Rawalpindi, "it is very sad to see that minorities in Pakistan are not safe and are targeted for their religion. It is vital that we work for national harmony.

Armed Islamists Occupy Chapel - muslim Police Break Up Mass Instead...

Local authorities apply law 144 / c, which bans any gathering of more than two individuals. The Christians had organized the mass to protest against the illegal occupation of the Protestant chapel since October 19 by a group of Islamic extremists .

Islamabad (AsiaNews) - The situation remains tense between Christians and local authorities in Rawalpindi (Punjab) over the illegal occupation of the Christian chapel of Gordon College, a Presbyterian Church University. Yesterday, the police stopped the celebration of a Mass organized by the Protestant community in front of the chapel. To prevent the gathering local authorities applied law 144 / c, which bans any gathering of more than two individuals. More than 20 police trucks arrived on site, dispersing the crowd.

On 19 October, a group of 20 armed men occupied the chapel and have barricaded themselves inside. These are Muslim faithful who have the backing of the local government with false documents claiming ownership of the building.

The act has drawn the protests of both Christians and Muslims. In recent days, the All Pakistan Christian Action Committee (Apcac), the local Christian community and non-governmental organizations took to the streets of Rawalpindi to demand justice and freedom of worship for Christians.

Nina Robinson Asghar, head of Apcac, said: "The culprits have made fake documents of the property, they want to demolish the Church and construct a commercial center, but we will never allow this to happen."

The Chapel of the Gordon College was reopened in April 2010 after eight years of closure. It currently belongs to a government trust fund, which should hand it to the Christian community, however, according to Pakistani law, the church could also be sold to third. The illegal occupation is an attempt to steal the building, a similar incident occurred in April, but the police intervened, arresting the culprits.

Islamabad, Feb. 13 (ANI): The British government has reportedly threatened to place a ban on all Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights, due to fear of influx of Al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorists after it was found that tens of Afghan nationals are illegally flying into the UK on Pakistani passports.

According to British officials, more than 50 Afghans bearing Pakistani passports landed in different UK cities from Karachi and Islamabad during the last two months, reports the Daily Times.

Sources said that the immigration officer of the British High Commission, acting on a tip-off on February 2, offloaded six Afghan citizens from PIA's flight PK-785 set for London.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Afghan nationals had paid 25,000 pounds each for sending them to the UK.

FIA Additional Director Sajjad Haider was reportedly found involved in the scandal.

Records suggest that a reference was filed in the accountability court of Rawalpindi against Haider in 2004 and he was sentenced for three years. He appealed against the decision but high court did not give him relief. Haider was reinstated on his post through NRO on July 18, 2008, and was promoted to the seat of deputy director. After Supreme Court's decision in NRO case, his promotion was cancelled. (ANI)
