'US, some allies blamed for Syria crisis'

Delegates at an international peace conference in Turkey have blamed the United States and some of its allies in the Middle East for creating the crisis in Syria, Press TV reports.

The participants from twenty-three different nationalities at the conference in Istanbul said on Sunday that the imperialistic designs of the US, certain Western states, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are to blame for the crisis, Press TV's Istanbul correspondent Serena Shim reported.

Conference guests also rejected any NATO or other foreign military intervention in Syria.

"The reason because of this international terrorism against my country is that Syria did not kneel down," Tammam Azzam, a Syrian delegate said. "And we'll not kneel down."

Cathy Goodman came all the way from the United States to show her discontent in what she calls her country is doing in the region, especially in the Syrian conflict.

Cathy told Press TV that the United States, with the help of its regional allies, was invading and destroying certain countries in the region because it wants to establish its hegemony over the oil rich Middle East.

"All of the American imperialist adventures have to be funded by American tax dollars... it comes directly out of our paychecks. Unfortunately, under Obama we had the largest military budget in our history. We are trying to stop imperialist aggression -- in all of its different manifestations."

Anhar Kocheneva is a Ukrainian journalist, who was captured and held captive by the foreign-backed militates in Syria for 25 days.

"I was not scared, and I am still not scared. They are terrorists. And I had to tell the story. They claim they are Islamists, but they are not Islamists. They say it is a revolution, but it is not. It is terrorism," Kocheneva said.

The delegates are now heading to the Turkish border town of Hatay for a festival in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The peace delegates told Press TV that they hope to blow the lid on imperialistic powers' agenda to steal resources across the region.

The representative of the US peace council said ordinary Americans don't know what's going on in the Middle East because of what she called a sanitized biased media propaganda campaign.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government security forces and army personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants.

Several international human rights organizations have accused the militants operating in Syria of committing war crimes.

Tramlines - Sun, Dec 9, 2012 11:21 GMT

Fun-loving Caroline Wozniacki made Serena Williams the butt of her joke at an exhibition match in Sao Paulo.

Wozniacki took on Maria Sharapova in front of a crowd that included boyfriend Rory McIlroy.

The Dane lost the match 6-2 7-6, and didn't seem to be taking things too seriously as she padded the, er, top and bottom of her outfit to give herself a curvier look.

The likeness to Serena, you'll surely agree, is uncanny.

Tennis impersonations are usually the preserve of Novak Djokovic - the madcap Serb has taken off big rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, as well as women's stars Williams and Sharapova.

Serena can afford to laugh off the light-hearted joshing - she has won five of her six matches against Wozniacki, including an Olympic quarter-final at Wimbledon this year.

Williams' profanity-laced, finger-pointing outburst drew a $10,000 fine from the U.S. Tennis Association in September
*******************
*******************

Serena Williams was fined a record $82,500 for her U.S. Open tirade and could be suspended from that tournament if she has another "major offense" at any Grand Slam in the next two years.

Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock's ruling was released Monday, and he said Williams faces a "probationary period" at tennis' four major championships in 2010 and 2011. If she has another "major offense" at a Grand Slam tournament in that time, the fine would increase to $175,000 and she would be barred from the following U.S. Open.

"But if she does not have another offense in the next two years, the suspension is lifted," Babcock said in a telephone interview from London.

He said Williams is handing over $82,500 right now, already nearly double the previous highest fine for a Grand Slam offense - about $48,000 Jeff Tarango was docked in the 1990s.

Williams lashed out at a lineswoman after a foot-fault call at the end of her semifinal loss to eventual champion Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open in September.

"I am thankful that we now have closure on the incident and we can all move forward," Williams said in a statement released Monday by her publicist. "I am back in training in preparation for next season and I continue to be grateful for all of the support from my fans and the tennis community."

She earned $350,000 by reaching the U.S. Open singles semifinals, part of her more than $6.5 million in prize money in 2009, a single-season record for women's tennis. Her career prize money tops $28 million.

The American is an 11-time Grand Slam singles champion and ended the 2009 season at No. 1 in the WTA rankings.

Williams' profanity-laced, finger-pointing outburst drew a $10,000 fine from the U.S. Tennis Association in September - the maximum onsite penalty a tennis player can face. But because it happened at a Grand Slam tournament, Babcock was charged with investigating whether further punishment was merited.

He concluded that Williams violated the "major offense" rule for "aggravated behavior." The Grand Slam committee - with one representative from each of the sport's four major championships - approved his decision Saturday.

The USTA said it would comment later Monday.

Babcock said a "major offense" under Grand Slam rules is "any conduct that is determined to be the 'major offense' of 'aggravated behavior' or 'conduct detrimental to the game.'" There is no specific definition of what sort of actions constitute a "major offense."

He said the highest possible fine that Williams could face - $175,000, if she violates her Grand Slam probation - was chosen because it is the difference in winnings between reaching the quarterfinals and semifinals at the U.S. Open. The $10,000 Williams already was docked by the USTA will be counted toward that total; that's why she is paying half of $165,000 now.

During the Sept. 12 match at Flushing Meadows, the foot fault - a call rarely, if ever, made at that stage of such a significant match - resulted in a double-fault for Williams, moving Clijsters one point from victory.

Williams paused, retrieved a ball to serve again and then stopped. She stepped toward the official, screaming, cursing and shaking the ball at her. Williams was penalized a point for that display; because it happened to come on match point, it ended the semifinal with Clijsters ahead 6-4, 7-5.

Serena Williams dumped out of U.S. Open after she told an official: 'If I could, I'd take this F***** ball and shove it down your f****** throat'
****************************
****************************

This was the dramatic moment when Serena Williams screamed her way out of the U.S. Open.

TV viewers around the world saw the irate Wimbledon champion launch a threatening, profanity-laced tirade at a female line judge after being called for a foot fault.

'If I could, I would take this f****** ball and shove it down your f****** throat,' she reportedly said.

The diminutive lineswoman reported her words to the umpire, who called in the tournament referee at Flushing Meadows in New York.

With the crowd booing, Miss Williams could be heard on the court microphone pleading with the lineswoman, saying: 'I didn't say I would kill you. Are you serious? I didn't say that.'

But her extraordinary outburst meant she was docked a point on match point, handing a semi-final victory to bemused Belgian opponent Kim Clijsters in one of the ugliest-ever endings to a major sports match.

Miss Williams had already received a warning for smashing a racquet, so the next sanction was a penalty point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

It happened when, with the 27-year-old American serving at 5-6 and 15-30 in the second set, she faulted on her first serve.

On her second serve, the line judge declared a foot fault, a call rarely, if ever, seen at that stage of a match.

That made the score 15-40, putting Miss Clijsters one point from a place in the final.

Miss Williams stormed over to the line judge, cursing and shaking her racquet, pointing at her and thrusting a ball in her face.

When the ruling was announced, she walked around the net to shake hands with her stunned opponent, who did not appear to understand at first what had happened.

At her post-match press conference, she was asked if she wished to apologise to the lineswoman.

'An apology for?' she asked. 'From me? How many people yell at linespeople? Players, athletes get frustrated - I don't know how many times I've seen that happen.

'I haven't really thought about it to have any regrets. I was out there and I fought and I tried and I did my best.

'I used to have a real temper, and I've gotten a lot better,' she said, with no apparent sense of irony.

'So I know you don't believe me, but I used to be worse. Yes, yes indeed.'

Asked what she had said to the line judge, she replied: 'What did I say? You didn't hear? I've never been in a fight in my whole life, so I don't know why she would have felt threatened.'~

    * Britain's Heather Watson claimed the U.S. Open girls' singles title with a straight-sets win over Russia's Yana Buchina. Watson, the 11th seed, came from 3-1 down in the first set to win 6-4 6-1 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre. The 17-year-old from Guernsey is the first British girl to win the U.S. Open junior title and follows on from Laura Robson's Wimbledon girls' title in 2008, while Andy Murray won the U.S. Open boys' title in 2004.

Paris May 30, 2009. Serena Williams was sure the ball went off her opponent's arm, a no-no in tennis. The opponent, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, insisted the ball went off her racket.

Williams accused Martinez Sanchez of "cheating." Martinez Sanchez thought that was a "stupid" thing for Williams to say.

Then consider that the point in question helped Martinez Sanchez win the first set of their French Open match Saturday. Oh, and that Williams had a coughing fit during a third-set changeover. All in all, what eventually became a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory for Williams stands as the latest example of the athlete/actress' penchant for theatrics.

"I'm, like, drama. And I don't want to be drama," a hoarse Williams said, straining to get the words out. "I'm like one of those girls on a reality show that has all the drama, and everyone in the house hates them because no matter what they do, like, drama follows them. I don't want to be that girl."

Perhaps. But the 2002 French Open champion, who dabbles in acting, sure seems to find herself in the middle of unique on-court situations.

Even Williams made passing reference Saturday to two episodes by naming the opponents, if not mentioning the details: a 2003 French Open semifinal loss marked by Justine Henin's gamesmanship and Williams' postmatch tears, and a 2004 U.S. Open quarterfinal loss to Jennifer Capriati that contained enough questionable officiating to prompt the introduction of replay reviews in the sport.

Here's what happened in Saturday's third-round match:

At 2-2 in the first set, Williams double-faulted to give a break point to Martinez Sanchez, a Spaniard who is ranked 43rd and never has reached the fourth round at a major. On the next point, Martinez Sanchez raced to the net behind a drop shot that brought Williams forward, too. Williams ran up and smacked a backhand right at Martinez Sanchez.

In what seemed to be an effort to protect herself, as much as to try to hit a volley, the left-handed Martinez Sanchez raised her racket, quick as could be. The ball ricocheted back - off her racket? off her arm? off both? - and past Williams. The point was awarded to Martinez Sanchez, giving her the game.

NBC, which televised the match, showed The Associated Press replays in which the ball appears to glance first off Martinez Sanchez's right forearm, then off her racket, before going over the net. Tennis rules say if a ball touches a player, the point is lost.

As the women headed to the ensuing changeover, Williams tried to say something to Martinez Sanchez, who kept walking. Then Williams spoke to the chair umpire, Emmanuel Joseph, saying, "I felt so bad. I didn't mean to hit her."

Repeatedly pointing to her own forearm, Williams told Joseph, "I don't know why you gave her the game. That's totally not cool."

"She better not come to the net again," Williams said.

At her postmatch news conference, Williams was asked whether she thought the ball touched Martinez Sanchez.

"I didn't 'think' the ball touched her - the ball did touch her, 100 percent, on her arm. The rules of tennis is when the ball hits your body, then it's out of play. You lose a point automatically," Williams said. "So the ball hit her body, and therefore, she should have lost the point - instead of cheating."

Could Martinez Sanchez have been unsure whether the ball made contact with her arm?

"I hit that ball rather hard," Williams said. "She knew that ball hit her."

A moment later, rolling her eyes, Williams added: "It was like, 'No way.' I would never do that. I've never done that. I've never sunk low."

When Williams' comments were relayed, Martinez Sanchez said: "I don't like to comment about this. It's a stupid comment."

Asked in both English and Spanish whether the ball hit her, she repeatedly said it went off her racket.

As for Williams' health, the 10-time Grand Slam singles champion said she's been fighting a cold.

"I thought," Williams said, "I was going to cough up a lung or something."

Talk about drama.
