This is just a fun video I made of my quest for the first Lychee I picked from our Orchard this year

Health Benefits of Lychee Fruit
Lychee a Small But Powerful Berry

Lychee, translated from Chinese as 'gift for a joyful life', surely lives up to its name. The lychee fruit contains vitamins and minerals that promote a healthy diet, it is sweet and delicious and it has been enjoyed joyfully by natives of southeast Asia for centuries.

Lychee A Symbol of Romance and Love

The health benefits of thee fruit has been tried, proven and touted in countries such as China, India and Indonesia, so much so that lychee made its way into ancient Chinese legend. It is believed that the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty would dispatch royal guards some 600 miles to pick lychee in an effort to woo his favorite concubine, to entice her with the sweet, fragrant flesh of the lychee fruit. Today, the lychee fruit in China as a result of such legend, is now a symbol of romance and love.

Anyone who eats the lychee fruit immediately falls in love with it. But if the fact that lychee is so delicious doesn't not convince you to try it, maybe hearing some of the health benefits of lychee will make you give this tropical fruit a second look.

Clinical Studies

Two studies done conclude that the lychee fruit prevents the growth of cancer cells. Lychee contains flavonoids in its pulp which prove very effective against breast cancer in particular. The Zhejiang Gonshang

University and the West China Hospital at Sichuan University in China conducted the studies. So this little fruit that resembles a strawberry can help to protect your body against cancer.

Another health benefit of the lychee fruit is that it is a great source of vitamin C, a vitamin that the body does not produce naturally. Vitamin C helps the body to fight heart disease and cancer. Vitamin C is good for our bones, skin and tissue, and therefore is a very important vitamin to our overall good health.

Through the high content vitamin C content of the lychee fruit, the fruit benefits those suffering from colds, fevers and sore throats. Lychee also helps the body to digest food properly for the best nutrition and an added boost of health.

Lychee, the Chinese believe, also has the ability to relieve pain and shrink swollen glands. People in China treat these symptoms with the lychee fruit using ancient Chinese medicines and they attest to its powers even though there are currently no studies out there that give scientific weight to this argument.

Along with these health benefits lychee also contains phosphorous, calcium, magnesium and protein. Though the lychee fruit is native to Asia, the popularity and reputation of the fruit as a healthful fruit has contributed to the commercial growth of lychee trees in California and Florida. Lychee can be found in Asian supermarkets in cans or dried or they are found in jellies, jams, marmalades or sauces in Asian cuisine.

China's mysterious rocket launch

The ghost like appearance sparked UFO reports across southern China. The Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) said it was a rocket launch for aero-logical sounding, but that was a lie. US officials said it was actually an Anti-Satellite missile test.

China's military on Monday conducted the first test of a new ground-launched anti-satellite missile that was fired into space and disguised as a space-exploration rocket, according to U.S. officials.

The test was carried out early Monday from the Xichang Space Launch center and was identified by officials as the new Dong Ning-2 ASAT missile.

The ASAT test comes a week after China protested the release of the Pentagon's annual report on the Chinese military buildup that mentioned Beijing's development of anti-satellite weapons.

The Free Beacon first disclosed the existence of the new missile in October and a missile researcher reported in January that a new ASAT missile was being readied for its first test.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei was asked if China conducted an ASAT test during a briefing for reporters in Beijing on Tuesday. He did not deny that it was carried out.

"I am not aware of the development that you described," he said. "China has consistently advocated the peaceful use of outer space and is opposed to militarizing and conducting an arms race in outer space."

Pentagon spokeswoman Maj. Cathy Wilkinson said: "We don't have a comment on it as we don't discuss intelligence."

A U.S. official familiar with intelligence reports said the DN-2, as a high earth-orbit attack missile, is a significant advance for China's program of developing asymmetric warfare capabilities for use against the United States. Others include cyber-warfare capabilities and anti-ship ballistic missiles.

It could not be learned if the latest ASAT test involved an impact with a target satellite.

A second official said the Chinese apparently disguised the ASAT missile test as a space exploration experiment. The website of the National Space Science Center, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, reported Monday that a sounding rocket was used in a high-altitude scientific exploration test.

"This experiment used a high-altitude space-exploring rocket, Langmuir probe, high-energetic particle detectors, magnetometers and barium-powder release experimental apparatus and other payload of scientific exploration to test and measure the ionosphere, the high-energy particles and magnetic fields of the near-Earth space strength and structure," the notice said.

China in 2007 conducted its first successful hit-to-kill ASAT test against a weather satellite in low-earth orbit. The impact left tens of thousands of pieces of debris in orbit that continue to threaten both manned and unmanned spacecraft.

Defense officials have said China's ASAT weapons, including missile interceptors, lasers, and electronic jammers, are designed to disrupt satellite communications and navigation systems used extensively by the U.S. military in conducting joint warfare.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel stated in written answers to questions during his confirmation hearing in January that the United States would seek to avoid engaging in hostilities in space.

However, Hagel revealed that U.S. space policy calls for "the secretary of defense to develop capabilities, plans and options to deter, defend against, and, if necessary, defeat efforts to interfere with or attack U.S. or allied space systems."

The statement was the clearest indication that the Pentagon is preparing to develop "counterspace" weapons in response to Chinese anti-satellite weapons.

"The chances are good this is indeed an ASAT test as it was launched from the Xichang Space Launch Center, the same launch site used for the January 2007 successful SC-19 ASAT interception of a Chinese weather satellite," said Rick Fisher, a senior fellow at the International Assessment and Strategy Center. Xichang is located in southern Sichuan Province.

Fisher said Chinese Internet reports stated that the ASAT test of what U.S. official say was a DN-2 may have up to four stages and included one or two liquid-fueled upper stages to provide greater thrust as the missile closed in on a target.

"While there so far has been no report of a successful interception, even a very near miss would serve to validate this new ASAT system," Fisher said.

A validated DN-2 ASAT system would provide the Chinese military with the capability to "degrade or severely damage the U.S. Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system," he said.

"This is not merely a threat against some American military satellites, but a threat to a what has become a vital part of the global electronic infrastructure, affecting global commerce and financial flows, to your personal finances that contribute to personal freedom."

Fisher said China has been "preaching" that other states should disarm while Beijing secretly builds space weaponry at the same time it has denied being engaged in the space arms buildup.

"In the face of such a threat, the United States simply has no choice but to pursue symmetric capabilities to deter Chinese attacks in space, but also to consider its own requirements for space superiority," he said.

The major concern for Pentagon war planners is that China, with an arsenal of around two dozen anti-satellite missiles, could severely disrupt U.S. command-and-control systems, intelligence-gathering satellites, and navigation satellites used to guide precision guided missiles.

Security analyst Gregory Kulacki said in an online posting in January that the ASAT test was expected as early as that month.

"Given these high-level administration concerns and past Chinese practice, there seems to be a strong possibility China will conduct an ASAT test within the next few weeks," Kulacki, a Chinese-language speaker with the Union of Concerned Scientists stated.

Defense officials disclosed to the Free Beacon that the DN-2 test was initially planned for last fall, but was delayed by the Chinese over concerns that the test would upset President Barack Obama's reelection bid.

While details of the DN-2 are not known, U.S. officials said it is expected to be a high earth-orbit interceptor capable of destroying strategic navigation, communication, or intelligence satellites by ramming into them at high speeds.

The DN-2 is said to be capable of hitting targets in high-earth orbit between 12,000 and 22,236 miles above earth. Many military, intelligence, and commercial satellites orbit at that altitude.

A Pentagon-State Department report to Congress last year on export controls stated that in addition to ground-launched ASAT missiles, China is building high-technology kinetic and direct energy weapons for ASAT use.

Lushan, China -- A strong earthquake that struck the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan this weekend has killed 186 people, sent nearly 8,200 to hospitals and created a dire dearth of drinking water, Chinese state-run Xinhua reported Sunday. Earlier reports had said as many as 11,200 people were injured.

The Sichuan Red Cross estimated that drinking water in Ya'an City will run out within three days despite rescue workers' efforts to deliver supplies to quake-hit area. In more remote areas, where the shifting earth muddied river waters, people anxiously awaited evacuation, Xinhua said.

Thousands of emergency workers, including soldiers, rushed to reach the affected zones in the hilly region, but their progress was impeded.

Huge mountain chunks near the quake's epicenter in Lushan County have sheared off and fallen into valleys. Boulders have landed on roads, making emergency work difficult. Buildings were flattened in the county, and others had severe structural damage.

CHINA (East Asia) Recently, a post with both pictures and words detailing a deadly game appeared on a Luzhou city of Sichuan province local forum. The post shows: A man jumped off the 40-meter high Tuojiang River Bridge No.1 after a bet with friends, ultimately sinking into the river's waters and disappearing. On the morning of the 9th, information was obtained from the Luzhou police department, that this diving incident happened on the afternoon of April 6th, an accident when 21-year-old parkour enthusiast Wang Zijian was "conquering" the Tuojiang River. According to the preliminary investigation by Beicheng Police Station, on the afternoon of April 6th, Wang Zijiang and parkour enthusiasts Xiao Zheng (a minor, pseudonyn) and Xiao Jie agreed over the internet to meet for parkour training at the downtown white tower. The three of them walked along Binjiang Road to the area near Tuojiang Bridge No.1. This picture is of Wang Zijian standing on the bridge ready to dive down.

For years, economists have known that China is sitting on a dangerous debt bomb. A well-known Hong Kong economist, Larry Lang, has recently taken it one step further, claiming that the fuse has now been lit, and it's only a matter of time before everything goes "bang."

At a March 16 economic summit in China, Lang said that a banking crisis has already begun, and that it will lead to a full-blown economic crisis before too long.

Lang had mostly made that point last November, noting that a banking crisis is one of the major dangers China's economy faces, along with overcapacity and inflation, according to the Lanzhou Morning Post.
Lang said at the recent summit that the onset of China's current banking crisis was marked by the Bank of Communications' stock price plummeting below book value on June 1, 2012.

The cause of the bank crisis overall is due to local governments around the country defaulting on their debts, which has happened since April of last year, in Shanghai, and Sichuan and Yunnan provinces.
China's banking system has seen many troubles in recent years. Among the 16 listed banks, 10
have seen their stock prices going below book value, with another five coming quite close, Lang said, adding that no other country has seen such a record.

While regular banks are sinking in debt, the non-bank financial system, or shadow banking system, which includes private loans, corporate credit, and underground financing operations, are also in trouble, Lang said.

"The shadow banking system is preferred by many local businesses, real estate, and manufacturers, and has 30 trillion yuan ($4.8 trillion) worth of loans in the market," Lang said. Frequently, because of the state's monopoly on the banking system, private companies aren't able to gain loans from banks - so they turn to the sometimes usurious shadow banking system.

Lang predicted that the shadow banking system will soon accumulate too much debt and become "another horrific financial crisis for China." The authorities have admitted as much, with Xiao Gang, head of the Bank of China, in October 2012 remarking that the shadow banking system poses "tremendous risks to China's banking and financial systems."

Almost simultaneous with Lang's recent dire forecast are reports from Nomura Holdings Inc. and JP Morgan. Both companies warned investors of China's emerging financial crisis.

Nomura sounded a warning that the Chinese economy is exhibiting the same worrying symptoms that triggered the 2008 financial crisis, CNBC reported.

JP Morgan downgraded China to "underweight," and recommended bearish bets against the country's largest banks, citing concerns over slowing growth and inflation.

"Huge amounts of money are stuck in the real estate market, and some local financing platforms borrowed large amounts from state-owned banks," Dr. Frank Xie, a professor in the School of Business Administration at the University of South Carolina, Aiken, told Sound of Hope radio. "Now that local governments' revenue from land sales have dropped significantly, they cannot repay their debts. The bank loans will eventually become bad debts."

Xie added that the banks' debt crisis has caused their stock prices to plummet below net worth. "In effect, the banks are already insolvent," Xie said, "In other words, many Chinese banks are dangerously close to bankruptcy."

China will be impacted profoundly from a banking crisis-far more than developed, democratic countries-Xie said, adding that communist authorities will have no easy way out.

The immediate consequence of bankruptcy, he said, would be that people won't be able to get their deposits back. "If the regime uses forces to prevent people from drawing cash, Chinese people are likely to fight back" and possibly even overthrow the regime, he said. On the other hand, if the regime tries to print money to solve the problem, "it will escalate the already high inflation." That will cause further economic dislocation, and itself may trigger civil unrest.
