Source: http://gatesofvienna.net/2013/05/carbecues-in-the-stockholm-banlieues/

It seems that Stockholm has become the Paris of the North - but
probably not in a way that would gladden the heart of a Swedish tourism
minister.

A third night of rioting has engulfed the suburbs of Stockholm,
spreading from Husby to Tensta, Kista, Rinkeby, Jakobsberg, and other
culturally enriched neighborhoods. The Swedish and Norwegian media are
covering the events (assiduously avoiding saying anything about the
ethnicity or immigrant status of the perpetrators), but I'm told that
Danish outlets have so far made no mention of what is happening in the
capital of their Nordic neighbor. Which is curious, considering the
Denmark is generally more open than Norway or Sweden.

Many thanks to The Observer for translating this article from Aftenposten:

More car fires and unrest in various locations in Stockholm

For the third night in a row riots have broken out in the Swedish capital.

Cars are burning in various locations in and around the city according to Swedish media reports late Tuesday night.

In addition to the car fires a barn, Husby Gard , which
houses a cafe and an art center, have been torched according to Svenska Dagbladet

According to the newspaper, the fire department is at the scene, but the building is completely ablaze.

Kindergarten is burning

Cars have been torched in several suburbs in the northwestern parts
of Stockholm, including in Husby, Tensta and Kista, writes DN.se.

Cars are also burning in the southwestern part of the city, according to the newspaper.

In Husby, a kindergarten was set on fire, but the fire was put out just before one o'clock on Wednesday morning, writes Aftonbladet .

"We're not used to dealing with situations like this on such a scale.
It's hard when it spreads to different areas," says Lars-Aker Stevelin,
leader of operations at the S"odert"orn fire station, to the newspaper.

Threw rocks at the police

Aftonbladet writes that according to police reports, rescue
personnel in Norsborg in the southwestern part of Stockholm had rocks
thrown at them during the riots.

DN.se writes that the police were engaged in a confrontation with
youths outside the police station in Jakobsberg, in the northwestern
region of Stockholm.

Youths threw objects at the police and the police station was exposed to vandalism, the newspaper writes

Third night in a row

This is the third night in a row that major unrest has erupted in and around Stockholm.

The riots allegedly started after police officers shot and killed a
69-year-old immigrant who was threatening people with a knife in Husby.

Several commentators have pointed, however, out that the root causes
goes deeper and that the turmoil is a result of social decay.

CAMERON OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David Cameron enraged Tory rebels last night by striking a late deal with Labour to prevent his own MPs wrecking gay marriage legislation.

The Prime Minister backed Labour's calls for an immediate consultation on the future of civil partnerships once gay marriages are legalised.

This could either lead to them being extended to heterosexual couples or scrapped totally.

Despite the opposition of half the Tory backbenchers, the 11th-hour deal, a humiliation for the PM, means same-sex marriages could take place next summer.

Mr Cameron's reliance on Labour to force the measure through highlighted his divisions with his backbenchers. Gay marriage has become the latest in a series of issues sparking friction between the PM and traditionalist Tories.

The legislation had looked to be in serious trouble yesterday as Labour threatened to vote to introduce civil partnerships for straight couples as well - a move which critics said could cost the Exchequer lb4billion by extending pension rights and inheritance tax breaks.

Tory rebels were backing the move in an attempt to wreck the entire Bill.

But the Government, which had previously suggested it would review civil partnerships within five years, headed off a potential defeat by agreeing to a consultation immediately.

Sources said the review would be 'very thorough and very, very long'.

In the Commons, Tory splits were highlighted by a clash between Sir Gerald Howarth and Margot James, the Tories' only openly gay woman MP.

Miss James, welcoming the legislation, said many gay people had suffered abuse and anti-discrimination legislation was needed to protect them.

But Sir Gerald replied: 'I fear that the playing field has not been levelled. I believe that the pendulum is now swinging so far the other way and there are plenty in the aggressive homosexual community who see this as but a stepping stone to something even further.'

Veteran Tory Edward Leigh protested: 'If you dare disagree with the orthodoxy that gay marriage is the best thing since sliced bread, you are breaking a new taboo.'

He suggested that the 'outlandish views of the loony left of the 1980s have now become embedded in high places'.

'What the Government is refusing to recognise is that they are not legislating this Bill to redefine marriage in a vacuum.

Yvette Cooper, shadow home secretary, revealed that Labour would withdraw its support from the amendment tabled by Tory opponents of gay marriage. 'They are legislating in a culture which has been so coloured by political correctness that mild-mannered people expressing reasonable beliefs in moderate tones are treated like villains,' he added.

She said: 'We know David Cameron's leadership is too weak to be able to push this through and to be able to get support on his own benches.

'We think that is a serious problem. But also we don't want to see gay couples who are desperate to set the date and get married at the mercy of this Tory infighting.'

Last night Cabinet ministers Iain Duncan Smith and Owen Paterson voted with the rebels who were calling for registrars to opt-out of performing same sex marriages.

Tragic stories like this are becoming increasingly common in Britain, as another person takes his own life - and his family blame it on the recession.

Earlier this month, Stephanie Botrill committed suicide, blaming the government and their new bedroom tax.

Now father of one, 36 year old Antony Breeze has set himself alight after getting in to debt.

An inquest in to his death heard how last August, Anthony walked to a secluded wood near his family home in Bolton, and set himself on fire. He told a horrified onlooker that he was in debt and had "had enough". He suffered 73-percent burns and died the next day.

In the weeks before his death aggressive loan sharks had been ringing him day and night over lb1,600 worth of debt. He had been seeing a counsellor over the arrears and had lost over six kilos in weight in just a few weeks.

Police investigating his death found he owed money to several payday loan companies.

These controversial short-term lenders easily charge 3 or 4,000% interest for people to borrow small amounts of money.

They have been strongly criticised, and the office of fair trading has revoked the licence of two lenders, and is investigating three more.

The coroner at the inquest declared an open verdict in Anthony Breeze's death, saying he could not see how this would drive him to take his own life. But his family - and Stephanie Botrill's - are convinced that it did. And experts say these won't be the last losses as the economic crisis lingers on in Britain.

A PATRIOTIC ex-soldier who painted a St George's flag on his front door has been ordered to cover it up by his housing association landlords who claim it could be considered "offensive" and may bring "distress" to neighbours.Steven Rolfe, 52, painted the red and white colours of the English flag on his rented home in Preston, Lancs, 10 years ago and added hanging baskets to celebrate his love of England and mark his former career in the forces.

But despite being runner up in a council "best kept house" competition, he has now received a letter from an official at property management firm Places for People saying neighbours could be "alarmed" by the symbol.

The letter also warned the design could place him in a category of "nuisance neighbours" and said it could see him being evicted if he failed to cover it up.

In a letter to Mr Rolfe, Neighbourhood Officer Leanne Hardy gave him 14 days to repaint the door saying: "It has been brought to my attention that you have painted your front door in a way that could be considered offensive."

When he asked for permission to keep the flag, Ms Hardy sent another letter refusing his request and giving him seven days to paint over it in one colour.

She also warned him that failure could see him being in breach of his tenancy agreement.

In her letter Ms Hardy said the flag design fell foul of rules tackling unruly tenants who caused "a nuisance, annoyance, disturbance or harassment" of others.

Ms Hardy also said his conduct breached tenancy conditions concerning those tenants who were "injurious to the interests of neighbours" and those who "cause distress, alarm or interfere with the peace and comfort of any other person."

Mr Rolfe, who served in Northern Ireland, said: "I couldn't believe it when I got the letter.

"We seem to be losing our values in this country and also losing our sense of identity, all in the name of political correctness."

The father-of-one said he had never had any problems before and none of his neighbours have ever complained.

He added: "I am far from being racist, I'm just proud of England that's all.

"My neighbours say they would like to see more of the St George's flag about."

Mr Rolfe has been supported by Muslim community leader Ali Anwar who said: "As far as I'm concerned, a man's home is his castle, and he should be allowed to express himself as he wishes. This is political correctness gone mad."

Former Labour MP David Borrow, who is now a local councillor, said: "The door has been like that a long time and having spoken to the gentleman, I have no reason to believe that he is anything other than a decent member of the community.

"I do not believe that he has intended the door to symbolise anything offensive, and I have heard no specific complaints."

John Clemence, vice president of the Royal Society of St George, said: "To say that the cross of St George can cause offence needs to be challenged.

"We are seeing more and more of this kind of complaint, and these jobsworths are causing resentment and inciting racial hatred."

Places for People, which owns the house and runs 143,000 homes across Britain, has since apologised for calling the flag "offensive" but said Mr Rolfe must still repaint the door because he does not have the proper permission.

The fundamentalist preacher is promising to return to Jordan to face terror charges when a fair-trial treaty comes into force.

Economic case for UK to stay in Europe is 'overwhelming'

First it was rebel members of parliament, now business leaders have waded into the debate over Britain's membership of the European Union.

Top industry figures have signed a letter in the British Independent newspaper, saying the economic case to stay in Europe is "overwhelming."

Virgin founder Richard Branson is among them. The leaders say the UK stands to lose up to 108 billion euros a year if it goes it alone.

It comes as British Prime Minister David Cameron is accused of "losing control" of his Conservative party, amid internal divisions over Europe. He has recently been forced to back a new bill that would enshrine an in-out referendum pledge in law.

Cameron's problems have been made worse by claims that an unidentified, close aide described Conservative grassroots Eurosceptics as "mad swivel-eyed loons." The comments have been denied by Downing Street.

Major Timothy Peake is set to become the first British astronaut in space for more than 20 years.

Peake, a former apache helicopter pilot with the British army, is expected to visit the International Space Station (ISS) in 2015.

Before that, there is a lot to prepare for - as Peake explained to euronews:

"We do a lot of training in weightlessness, for example parabolic flights. We learn about EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity): how to do space walking. We learn about robotics," Peake said.

"I've trained as a Eurocom, which a communicator with the space station. We actually work with crew on board and help them in their daily jobs. We're kept very busy while waiting for our mission assignment," Peake continued.

The UK Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts said: "We've got a very successful space industry that is growing at about eight per cent a year."

"It's an event like this, sending an astronaut up to the space station, that really brings home to people that we're serious and it signals that Britain is a space-faring nation and proud of it," Willetts added.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Peake's selection, as one of six astronauts picked from 8,000 hopefuls, was a "landmark" moment for the UK.
