Graphene is a material composed of pure carbon, with atoms
arranged in a regular hexagonal pattern. Graphene can be described as a
one-atom thick layer of the mineral graphite ,
(many layers of graphene stacked together effectively form crystalline
flake graphite). Amongst its other well-publicised superlative
properties, it is very light, with a 1-square-meter sheet weighing only
0.77 milligrams.
The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2010 was awarded to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov at the University of Manchester "for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene". In 2013, graphene researchers led by Prof. Jari Kinaret from Sweden's Chalmers University of Technology ,
secured a EUR1 billion grant from the European Union to be used for
further research into development of potential applications of graphene.

MAY 24, 2013 11:52 AM ET // BY IRENE KLOTZ

NASA may not be going to the moon anytime soon, but private companies plan to do so, a study by space habitat developer Bigelow Aerospace shows.

The study, commissioned by NASA, is intended as a supplemental roadmap for the U.S. government as it charts human space initiatives beyond the International Space Station, a permanently staffed research complex that orbits about 250 miles above Earth.

"Instead of being the typical approach where we put together all the plans and we ask for participation, we wanted to look at it the other way and see what's available," NASA's head of space operations, Bill Gerstenmaier, told reporters during a press conference on Thursday.

"This is a holistic kind of effort," added Robert Bigelow, president and founder of the Nevada-based firm that bears his name. "It's intended to encompass as much (information) as possible and it's intended to evolve and to grow."

The first part of the study surveyed about two dozen companies and research organizations about their ideas, plans, capabilities, schedules and costs for upcoming space initiatives. A draft report was submitted to NASA on Thursday -- 40 days ahead of schedule -- and has not yet been publicly released.

NASA intends to use the information to figure out where it can collaborate with private space initiatives and where it might, for example, entirely skip an expensive research and development program and just buy services or hardware commercially.

For example, after the International Space Station is removed from orbit, NASA could be a tenant aboard a Bigelow Aerospace-owned habitat for any microgravity research or technology development it wants to do.

"We think station can fly to 2028," Gerstenmaier said.

After that, "we won't be in the business of maintaining and operating a facility in low-Earth orbit. We believe that there will be a service available for us and the private sector," he said.

NASA plans to follow the space station program with human missions to an asteroid by 2025 and to Mars about a decade later. The most recent version of its exploration blueprint calls for a robotic mission to retrieve a small asteroid and relocate it into orbit around the moon. Astronauts then would launch for a scientific sortie.

By that time, NASA may find it has neighbors on the lunar surface.

"The brass ring for us is having a lunar base," Bigelow said. "That is a desire we've had for a long, long time."

"I think that's perfectly acceptable," added Gerstenmaier. "NASA and the government focus on maybe deep space, we focus on asteroids. The private sector picks up the lunar activity and then we'll combine and share with them to see what makes sense."

"This gives us a chance to step back and do a bigger view of our planning and not doing it in our own little stovepipes. We're actually reaching out and starting to look right at the beginning as we start to formulate our thinking," he added.

NASA expects to release the first part of Bigelow's study within a few weeks. The second section is expected to be finished this fall.

Animal astronauts return from space mission

A Russian space capsule containing mice, sand eels, geckos, gerbils, snails, fish, plants and microflora has returned from a month long mission to space. The Bion-M craft made a parachute-assisted landing on a field in the Orenberg Region, 1,200 kilometres southeast of Moscow on Monday. A mobile laboratory and helicopters were dispatched to the landing zone for immediate testing of the effects of weightlessness on the animal's cell structure.

The Bion-M capsule, attached to a Soyuz 2-1A rocket, was blasted into space from Kazakhstan on April 19 for a study examining the effects of microgravity on the organism's skeleton, muscles, heart and nervous system. The rocket spun at an orbital height of 575 kilometres above Earth, surpassing that of the International Space Station.

The different species in the 'space menagerie' were divided up into five different containers for the 30 day journey, which not all the animals survived. An equipment failure killed eight gerbils onboard while half of the 53 mice also perished; all 15 geckos survived. Scientists hope the findings will help pave the way to the building of a planned base on the moon for unmanned flights to Mars.

The survivors will be studied by laboratories in the US, Europe, Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine. In February 2010, Iran launched a mouse, two turtles and some worms into space atop a rocket.

http://www.vice.com/read/we-watched-the-stockholm-suburbs-burning

... really beginning to love this channel.

Media blowing things out of proportion is not a new thing. But after this weeks events and public ( as well as LiveLeak ) response from everyone, I am beginning to realize something else:

Many people WANT drama in their lives.

They WANT to have an enemy to hate.

So they easily allow themselves to feel threatened, when in reality, the things that should scare us more ( Cancer from cigarettes and pollution, deteriorating health care, less fulfilling lives then our parents and grandparents who had less technology, Justin Bieber's new album coming out) are overlooked.

The population of Muslims in England is less than 5%.

That's a fact.

One man was killed earlier this week by 2 lunatics. Sad, but it was one man. How many dies from drunk driving or cancer from cigarettes since then in England?

Here are the statistics on Muslim population in England, and please read the VICE article, it's not what you would expect, and it has given me a newfound respect to the way Swedes conduct themselves.

Population of England : 53 Million

United Kingdom Census 2011 suggesting that by 2011 the total Muslim population had reached 2.7 million, 4.8% of the total population

1,500 mosques for 2.7 million Muslims.

Go to any mosque on Friday the holy day, and I promise you at most you will see a couple hundred. Which shows only a small percent even go to the mosque during the holy day, no different than church.

Search as much as you want for videos and photos of the "riots" in London the other night, and you will see the same guys, and the same footage. Perhaps 50-100 drunks walking around the town all night long.

That's all.

That's all.

Relax everyone.

Relax.

Strawscraper - An Urban Power Plant

STRAWSCRAPER is an extension of S"oder Torn on S"odermalm in Stockholm with a new energy producing shell covered in straws that can recover wind energy. What was supposed to become a building of 40 flights became 26. S"oder Torn on S"odermalm in central Stockholm was finalized 1997, but the architect Henning Larsen had already left the contract after having lost influence over the design of the tower.

Belatchew Arkitekter wants to give S"oder Torn its original proportions and at the same time explore new techniques that could create the urban wind farm of the future. By using piezoelectric technology a large number of thin straws can produce electricity merely through small movements generated by the wind. The result is a new kind of wind power plant that opens up possibilities of how buildings can produce energy. With the help of this technique surfaces on both old and new buildings can be transformed into energy producing entities. Furthermore, an additional aspect is revealed when the constant movement of the straws creates an undulating landscape on the facades. What is usually considered to be the most static of all things, the building, suddenly comes alive and the construction gives the impression of a body that is breathing. The straws swaying in the wind gives the building a constantly changing facade further reinforced at nighttime with lighting in changing colors.

The straws of the facade consist of a composite material with piezoelectric properties that can turn motion into electrical energy. Piezoelectricity is created when certain crystals' deformation is transformed into electricity. The technique has advantages when compared to traditional wind turbines since it is quite and does not disturb wildlife. It functions at low wind velocity since only a light breeze is sufficient for the straws to start swaying and generate energy. The existing premise on top of the building is replaced with a public floor with room for a restaurant. The new extension creates, a part from the energy producing shell, room for the citizens with the possibility to reach a lookout platform at the very top of the tower with an unmatched view of Stockholm.

New World Record in Wireless Data Transmission

Researchers of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics and the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology have achieved the wireless transmission of 40 Gbit/s at 240 GHz over a distance of one kilometer. Their most recent demonstration sets a new world record and ties in seamlessly with the capacity of optical fiber transmission. In the future, such radio links will be able to close gaps in providing broadband internet by supplementing the network in rural areas and places which are difficult to access.

Digital, mobile and networked - changing media usage habits of modern society require the faster transmission of increasing volumes of data. Compared to the European standard, Germany lags behind in the expansion of the fiber-optic network, according to statistics from the FTTH Council Europe. Deploying new fiber-optic cables is expensive and difficult when there are natural or urban obstacles such as rivers or traffic junctions. Broadband radio links can help to overcome such critical areas, thereby facilitating the expansion of the network infrastructures. In rural areas they can be a cost-effective and flexible alternative to "Fiber to the Home".

Researchers have now set a new world record in wireless data transmission: For the first time, fully integrated electronic transmitters and receivers have been developed for a frequency of 240 GHz, which allows the transmission of data rates of up to 40 Gbit/s. This equals the transmission of a complete DVD in under a second or 2400 DSL16000 internet connections. Distances of over one kilometer have already been covered by using a long range demonstrator, which the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology set up between two skyscrapers as part of the project "Millilink". "We have managed to develop a radio link based on active electronic circuits, which enables similarly high data rates as in fiber-optic systems, therefore allowing seamless integration of the radio link", says Prof. Ingmar Kallfass, who coordinated the project at Fraunhofer IAF within the scope of a Shared Professorship between IAF and KIT. Since 2013, Kallfass is with the University of Stuttgart, where he continues to lead the project.

High Frequencies enable Fast Data Transmission

Using the high frequency range between 200 and 280 GHz not only enables the fast transmission of large volumes of data, but also results in very compact technical assembly. Since the size of electronic circuits and antennae scales with frequency / wavelength, the transmitter and receiver chip only measures 4 x 1.5 mm^2. The semiconductor technology developed at Fraunhofer IAF, based on transistors with high carrier mobility (HEMT), makes it possible to use the frequency between 200 and 280 GHz with active transmitters and receivers in the form of compact, integrated circuits. The atmosphere shows low attenuation in this frequency range, which enables broadband directional radio links. "This makes our radio link easier to install compared to free-space optical systems for data transmission. It also shows better robustness in poor weather conditions such as fog or rain", explains Jochen Antes of KIT.

Up to now, radio links were not able to directly transmit the data rates of glass fiber. This might change in the future, as the test setup of the project shows. Such a high performance system would also have the advantage of the so-called bit transparency, i.e. the signal of a glass fiber could be fed directly and without energy-consuming transcoding into a radio link. It could then be transmitted and redirected into a glass fiber. The record data from the test setup is only the beginning. "Improving the spectral efficiency by using more complex modulation formats or a combination of several channels, i.e. multiplexing, will help to achieve even higher data rates", says Antes. This could give new impetus to the expansion of the broadband network. Maybe Germany will then no longer occupy the lower ranks compared to the rest of Europe.

About the Project

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports the project "Millilink" with a total of 2 million Euros of funding within the support measure "Next-generation broadband access networks". Apart from the two research institutes Fraunhofer IAF and KIT, the project involves the industrial partners Siemens AG, Kathrein KG und Radiometer Physics GmbH. The aim of the project is integrating wireless links / radio links into broadband optical communication networks in order to provide rural areas with access to fast internet. Other possible applications are Indoor Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) as well as intra-machine and board-to-board communication.

This one is the coolest iv'e seen yet. hopefully the next one will have no wings and more lazers!

The first flying cars are set to go on sale to the public as early as 2015.
Terrafugia has announced its Transition design, which is part sedan, part private jet with two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car, will be on sale in less than two years.

The Massachusetts-based firm has also unveiled plans for a TF-X model that will be small enough to fit in a garage, and won't need a runway to take off.

Last year, the Transition successfully flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes. Commercial jets fly at 35,000 feet. However, it will not be cheap - the Transition will cost lb190,000 ($300,000)

And Terrafugia says owners must have pilot's licenses, and will need to pass a test plus complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the car. Despite the advances in technology the Transition demonstrates, critics have said that it is still not the vision of flying cars seen in many sci-fi films. To answer these critics, Terrafugia has now also released designs for a TF-X Model of its Transition range. Whereas the Transition requires a runway, the TF-X can take off from a vertical position because of motorised rotors on the wings. These rotors will work in a similar way to helicopter rotors.

Being able to take off from standstill means owners will be able to go from the road to the air
straight from their driveways, car parks and even when stuck in traffic.

Although you will still need at least 100 feet in diameter in order to open the wings. According to Terrafugia, the vehicle will carry four people 'in car-like comfort'. It is expected to be able to fly, nonstop, for 500 miles.

Population Control through Agenda 21 Eco-Cities will become permanent

At the 2012 UN Earth Summit for Sustainable Development Rio+20 there was an initiative to offer "many great opportunities for people from all over the world to come together, build bridges, and draft a common path upon which all residents of this breathtakingly beautiful planet we call home can journey towards a sustainable and equitable future." This ideal would be brought to life in the plans of Agenda 21 Ecocities.

The blueprint for "a prosperous, secure and sustainable future for people and planet" where Agenda 21 comes to life under the directives of the UN and with the cooperation of the world's governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and private-sector corporations.

The Ecocity Builders is a non-profit organization which is a collaboration of international networks of associates that influence and actively participate in local city planning projects all across the US. Through training courses, they advocate the ecocity approach as the only way to continue in civilized society.

Through coercive conferences like the International Ecocity Conference series that is an international movement toward building locally and globally. They have created UN sustainable cities in countries like India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Brazil, Senegal, South Africa, Turkey, nine countries in Europe, Korea, and Australia.

They focus on reworking current issues to match UN Agenda 21 guidelines in planning for local cities including transportation, energy, architecture, design, natural restoration, development, planning, and advocacy.

The push toward the ecocity is the design of a metropolitan city that puts nature first and humanity last. Their justification for moving people into ecocities and out of the rural areas is that 90% of people currently live in or near a major city - why not just move everyone in closer together.

They characterize the ecocity as:

o Human settlements modeled after sustainable development that functions with natural ecosystems and living organisms
o Reduce the inhabitants ecological impact on the environment
o Restoration of ecosystems after the recolonization of humans into dense cities
o Sustainable living under Agenda 21 supports regional, national and global economic systems

Urban ecocities claim can regulate climate change, food distribution, nutrient balance, and water securitization that provide the general masses with provisions, culture and support in ways that are not facilitated by the current living conditions.

These ecocities can control the inhabitants movements by mandating mass transit and removing the ability to use personal cars, be build and designed in ways that support surrounding environments and natural resources, and mitigate the human impact on climate change as man-made influence is the direct causation of the destruction of the biosphere.

Ultimately, ecocities are sold as "a practical vision for a sustainable and restorative human presence on this planet and suggests a path towards its achievement through the rebuilding of cities, towns and villages in balance with living systems."

In Surat, India The Ecological Sequestration Trust (TEST) is funding the building of an ecocity that adheres to Agenda 21 sustainable development models.

Beginning this month, TEST and the South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce is funneling funds to construct green buildings that reduce heat and regulate water use, pair with an intelligent mass transit system, control traffic and use GPS to map routes for tenants to take on local roads.

Reduced use of existing roadways will be facilitated by an eco-friendly transit system.

Peter Head, director of TEST remarked: "Surat can be the next Singapore in terms of ecology and water management systems."

Ecologically sustainable "megacities" will direct three sectors to ensure control over resources - water, energy and food security. Integrating land use plans will provide that by 2013 these schemes will be well underway.

In the plans is a directive to force 75% of the Surat population to use mass transit or "para transit like rickshaws and other modes of travel." Commuter travel will be strongly suggested to reduce CO2 emissions.

SK Datta, senior planner for The Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA) said: "The integration of sanitation, sewerage and other amenities along with land use in the master plan 2013 will change the face of Surat city dramatically."

Control over life in the ecocity will include:

o Reduction of urban city temperature by 3 to 4 degrees
o Regulated community food production spaces
o Mandated reduction of travel time with intelligent transit systems
o Controlled use of energy, water and waste
o Mandated green top technology buildings
o Forced reduction of public water use

Ecocities are the global Elite's answer to dense and controlled urban landscapes where human life is severely restricted. These ecocities are not in some far off and distant future. They are being constructed NOW. And soon, they will be the only available place to live.
