What a bunch of ???? Nature.com's article about the the Bladderwort Plant that discusses a detailed study and wondrous discovery of a plant that at some point looses it's version of Junk DNA was re-defined in a plethora of dis-information articles by mainstream news sources such as NBC, to re-call Junk DNA , Junk. Using a "Mexican lab" and a Buffalo NY Professor as it's second and third accomplices, these mainstream channels claim that because this plant doesn't need the similar looking stuff (similar to our "Junk" DNA material) that we don't either. An interesting population of articles filling the first page of Google's results for Junk DNA will have have one so confused, that they will feel like Elmer Fudd looking for the Rabbit in all the wrong places, and hearing the Loony Tunes anthem all the way to reading something else as fast as possible.

Why was 95% of genetic material known and accepted as Junk for the last 40 years, and why now such dedicated opposition to the idea that's it's not? Why ask why, instead learn here that this is all a B.S. Campaign that was launched across several sites on 5 13 2013.

Now re-focusing on the very diversified mountain of test results determining that there is indeed great potential in the full percentage of our genetic make-up please stay tuned to the science and share with your friends, you can be sure we'll be checking things out at DNA Super Science .com and please visit our sponsor Vitality Capsules

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -Illinois lawmakers agreed to legalize the use of medical marijuana on Friday under a plan that's being billed as the strictest in the nation among states that have authorized the drug's medicinal use, though it was unclear whether the Democratic governor plans to sign it.

The plan authorizes a pilot program for physicians to prescribe marijuana only to patients with whom they have an existing relationship. by Browse to Save" id="_GPLITA_3" href="http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22283181/illinois-senate-approves-medical-marijuana-bill#" style="text-decoration: underline;">Background checks are required, and patients must have at least one of more than three dozen terminal illnesses or other debilitating medical conditions specifically listed in the bill.

Gov. Pat Quinn has declined to say whether he supports the legislation, saying only that he was "open-minded" on the issue. Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, a former prosecutor, has said she is in favor of the plan after meeting with patients, including military veterans.

The proposed legislation creates a framework for a four-year pilot program that includes requiring patients and by Browse to Save" id="_GPLITA_1" href="http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22283181/illinois-senate-approves-medical-marijuana-bill#" style="text-decoration: underline;">caregivers to undergo background checks. It sets a 2.5 ounce limit per patient per purchase and calls for 60 dispensaries regulated by the state where patients could buy the drug.

"We are embarking here on a way to achieve relief, compassionate relief, consistent with the law (with) a system which avoids abuse," said the bill's sponsor, Democratic Sen. Bill Haine of Alton. "It's the tightest, most controlled legislative initiative in the United State related to medical cannabis."

Supporters say it is a compassionate measure that could save patients from the agony caused by illnesses such as cancer, by Browse to Save" id="_GPLITA_0" href="http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22283181/illinois-senate-approves-medical-marijuana-bill#" style="text-decoration: underline;">multiple sclerosis and HIV. They argue that marijuana can relieve continual pain without triggering the harmful effects of other prescription drugs, including painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin.

But opponents contend the program could encourage the recreational use of marijuana, especially among teenagers.

A report issued last month by the Pew Research Center poll showed that 77 percent of Americans say marijuana has legitimate medical uses. Eighteen states and the District of Columbia allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

But critics in the Illinois Senate, which approved the plan Friday in a 35-21 vote, worried about whether the regulations would be enough to prevent abuse of the drug.

"For every touching story that we have heard about the benefits of those in pain, I remind you today that there are a thousand times more parents who will never be relieved from the pain of losing a child due to addiction, which in many cases has started with the very illegal, FDA-unapproved, addiction-forming drug you are asking us to make a normal part of our communities," Sen. Kyle McCarter, a Republican from Lebanon, said ahead of the chamber's vote.

Under the bill, patients who are prescribed the drug would automatically consent to submit to a sobriety field test should a police officer suspect they were by Browse to Save" id="_GPLITA_2" href="http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22283181/illinois-senate-approves-medical-marijuana-bill#" style="text-decoration: underline;">driving under the influence of the drug. But leading Illinois law enforcement organizations have opposed the legislation, saying the test cannot determine if a motorist is under the influence of marijuana. The groups say the test works only for alcohol.

Haine, however, said his measure is the strictest the General Assembly has considered on medical marijuana.

Haine and other supporters have advocated for the issue for several years. A measure that cleared the Senate failed in the House in 2011. The current version of the bill received the House's approval in April.

The bill is HB1 .

            For National Geographic News

                Published April 30, 2013

How many conservatives does it take to change a
light bulb? A more intriguing question might be, "How many conservatives
can you persuade to switch to energy-efficient light bulbs?" New
research suggests that fewer will buy such bulbs when they're labeled as
being good for the environment, largely because the issue of carbon
emission reductions is so politically polarizing in the United States. "I think we've shown the negative consequences of environmental messaging," explained Dena Gromet , of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, lead author of a study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences .
"In particular, you can lose significant portions of people who would
otherwise be interested in these products when you use that
environmental labeling. So it indicates that different messages can
reach different groups." (See related interactive: " Light Bulb Savings Calculator .")The
United States is one of many countries forcing a switch to more
efficient light bulbs. In January, new efficiency requirements went into
effect for 75-watt incandescent bulbs, following new standards on
100-watt bulbs a year earlier. (See related story: " U.S. Bids Farewell to the 75-Watt Incandescent Light Bulb .") The changes are driving a projected 857 kilowatthour-per-household reduction in energy used
for U.S. residential lighting by 2040, a greater cut than for any other
area of household energy use. But consumer complaints have been
persistent, and Congress cut funding to enforce the standards. (See
related quiz: " What You Don't Know About Energy-Efficient Lighting. ") The Importance of Price

Gromet
and colleagues from Wharton and Duke University's Fuqua School of
Business first queried 657 volunteers to find out whether their opinions
on energy-efficient products were split along a political divide. They
were, she reported, and the issue of emissions reductions explained much
of that ideological distance. Then, a set of 210 potential buyers
were armed with information on the benefits of compact fluorescent
light bulbs (CFL), which last 9,000 hours longer than incandescent
bulbs, and cut energy costs by 75 percent. They were asked to choose
between lower efficiency and higher efficiency options; efficient bulbs
were offered, labeled with a "protect the environment" sticker in some
cases, and at other times with a blank sticker.Political
divisions appeared in purchasing choices-but not until price became an
issue. When all bulbs were priced the same, every participant save one
chose the energy-efficient option regardless of political persuasion."That
indicates that people recognize the greater economic value of the bulb
when there isn't a higher up-front cost," Gromet explained. But when the
study represented retail realities, that more efficient options carry a
higher up-front price tag (though consumers save money in the long run
through lowered utility bills), fewer conservatives were willing to pay
the extra cash for bulbs labeled as good for the environment."Our
results demonstrated that a choice that wasn't ideologically polarizing
without a ("protect the environment") label became polarizing when we
included that environmental labeling," Gromet said. "We saw a
significant drop-off in conservative people choosing to buy a more
expensive, energy-efficient option."The explanation, Gromet
suggests, could lie in labeling a consumer choice to represent values
that simply aren't shared by all buyers-in this case the environmental
issue of reducing carbon emissions."So it makes that choice
unattractive to some people even if they recognize that it may be a
money-saving choice. When we asked afterward, those consumers identified
the CFL bulbs as providing greater monetary savings over time. But they
would forgo that option when that product was made to represent a value
that was not something they wanted to be identified with." (See
related: " Missing the Chance for Big Energy Savings .")The
study also suggested that pro-environmental messages don't have much of
a positive influence on liberal consumers at the other end of the
political spectrum. "We didn't see a significant boost among political
liberals when we used the environmental message in our study," Gromet
added. "We'd need a lot more data, but one possibility stemming from
that is that you're not necessarily getting that much of a boost on the
liberal side." Other Factors at Work?

Jacquelyn Ottman , a marketing consultant specializing in sustainability who wrote The New Rules of Green Marketing ,
said she wouldn't expect green labeling to provide a big consumer boost
for liberals or conservatives. People buy green products for the value
they represent and because they work, she explained. Environmentally
aware consumers do appreciate health benefits, and hope to protect the
future for their families, but they aren't entirely swayed by green
messaging, she said."Green marketing I lump in with things like
'made in America' or 'the union label.' They are nice for some people to
think about when purchasing and maybe they add a little value are not
really game-changers in terms of swaying decisions. Some people conclude
that Americans don't care about the environment because if they did
they'd be buying more green products. But by that logic you'd say
Americans don't care about America because if they did they'd be buying
more 'made in America' products also."As for the possible
negative implications of green labeling, Ottman said other factors are
likely at work besides politics. Some green offerings still battle
stereotypes from decades ago, she said, when many were viewed as
"alternative" products that simply didn't work as well and weren't
produced by the larger brands consumers had come to trust. "There is a
lingering misconception about green products that they don't work and
that they are overpriced because they are gouging people based on their
sentiments about saving the planet," she said. Some recent market
research suggests that a different factor might be at work: Consumer
dislike for CFLs may be a far greater problem than price or messaging. Sales of solid-state LED lighting are growing rapidly ,
even though this high-efficiency choice is more costly than CFLs. The
Wharton-Duke study did not test attitudes on LEDs. (See related post: " LED Holiday Lights Boost the Season's Energy Efficiency .")Ottman
added that some marketers might be more interested to learn about how
short-term versus long-term savings factor into consumers' decision
making, especially vis-`a-vis premium pricing for many environmentally
preferable products-including light bulbs. That's an issue Gromet
hopes to explore as well, along with energy independence and other
benefits of efficient products unrelated to the environment."It's
an open question whether emphasizing those other aspects of
energy-efficiency might have different appeal to different (political
sensibilities) and a different impact on consumer decisions," she said.Editors'
note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that
household energy use for lighting was projected to decrease by 857
percent. It has been corrected to reflect the reduction is 857
kilowatthours. This story is part of a special series that explores energy issues. For more, visit The Great Energy Challenge .

Good quality clip for the time. Run time 00:04:16 Test sequence at 00:00:50

Portrays the political feelings at the time with some excellent archival footage of the bomb test and debate surrounding it.

Was originally 100 Megaton but was scaled back to 50Mt so the plane could escape the detonation safely. Blast shock wave travelled the earth over 8 times. Apparently could cause unprotected vision issues at over 200km away - a ridiculous amount of energy.

Parents & technology

These past couple of years, I hate certain "statements / comments" ... most of them are used by women, and all of these are from the "Twilight" movie series. I actually liked the first twilight movie, but then the series became "Twat-light". Bunch of twats running around and flying with super powers, with 30+ year California blondes cheering for them with panties soaked to the bone.

One particular line I hated was when "Bella" calls her mom, and mom says "I literally repel technology now." First time I heard my friendly over weight California blonde friend say it, I gave her a look (Some thing like this : o.0 ) and moved on.

But when several people started repeating that....

Anyway, need to focus away from ranting at Twat... errrr Twilight and Chubby Blondes.

Being a MSEE and working with technology all my life, I abhor people who don't take the time to understand basics. Its not complicated, and saying "Math is tough!" is NEVER cool! If a 10 year old can do it, then so can you.

So when the time came for my parents to try the new gifts I sent them, I was a bit apprehensive, but overall a little confident that Dad could figure it out.

A bit of a background : Dad holds a MSEE too, and worked as a Navy officer then a Senior Director for a Defense company. The guy has the Macguyver touch towards fixing everything. Yes, it was never polished and finely done, but he knew how to use every tool, fix everything. Right from shoes to refrigerators to complicated Nuclear submarines.

Ergo, the "high expectations".

So it starts off with them getting the gifts, which include computing, home entertainment, communication, and cooking products - all electronic. All purchased in the US, consequently 110V rated. I purchased them a AC to AC transformer and wrote down the operation on paper and made an instructional video (look up my channel) on how to use it.

So first night the gifts come in, Dad is missing the only component : a plug adapter : which converts an American Male plug to an Indian Male, so it can fit the Indian female wall socket. I calmly explain that ONLY the laptop's power cord can be directly fitted to the wall socket, since it is rated from 100v to 250V and all the rest need to be plugged to a power strip which is sourced from the AC to AC transformer.

I know Dad. If you cross the thought process of a mule with a heavy load climbing a steep slope and a 100 lb German Shepherd being taken to a bath and mix in the emotions of 50,000 sheep being taught the alphabet at MIT's space research laboratory, you will get to around 1/100th part of the obstinacy that my dad was inherently born with. And that obstinacy has exponentially grown over time. It is now to the extent, that if he visits a hospital, all women in labor need to have C-Sections since his mere presence affects the babies and makes them obstinate enough to not come out on their own.

Dad got the power adapter, which they call "China plug" in India, and then did not call me. He wanted to prove to Mom he could do it all by himself, and he started his engineering efforts brilliantly.

Literally.

He plugged in a D-Link wireless router (Priced at $55) directly to the wall, and made sparks to fly, as the 240V power fried the innards mercilessly. He was proceeding to test certain theories on the Cordless home phone system with multiple hand sets, when unluckily I called.

What could have been an interesting series of pops, crackles and a nice smell of ozone in the air was cut short, since I demanded he cease and desist.

Of course his comment was I had sent garbage, which was already damaged on arrival. And he proceeded to prove his theory by throwing an expensive piece of electronic equipment to the wall.

As per my Dad, violence always serves as a statement of truth. It was nary a week I had welts on my back where he had severely thrashed me, since I was playing cricket in the apartment grounds, instead of studying for my 4th grade exams. But thats a different story.

Mom was a nervous wreck, and there was a happy yelling match in progression when I interrupted. Now the funniest thing was: since we were on video chat on skype, and they were sharing one head set, it escaped their angry minds that if I am saying some thing, then it is being heard by only the person with the head set on his/hear ears. So naturally every time either assumed that the other MUST have heard what I said and proceeded to rant loudly at the other when the other goofed and did not follow the instructions given by me.

They made things a bit more interesting by putting things down and then promptly forgetting where they had put it. And with the tempers flaring, they rapidly forget the statements I had said, or jumbled them up.

This went on through three 45 minute skype calls, and I kid you not, even as a healthy young man, I had chest pains after every call!

Finally on the 4th call, I asked mom to put everything aside and write down what ever I said. I went through some basic electrical engineering, explaining DC and AC electricity, transformers, switches, etc.

In so far, 3 pieces of rather expensive electronic items have been destroyed. And I shudder to think what will happen next when we finish the first step of connecting the damn pre configured IBM Laptop to the internet and move to the home phone system or the entertainment system.

Bottom line : Don't give your parents technology, give them cash!
