Vultures Eat French Tourist Killed in Fatal Pyrenees Cliff Plunge A campaign against Griffon vultures is gathering pace in France after it was revealed that the carrion eaters had devoured the body of a 52-year-old woman who fell to her death in the Pyrenees. Major Didier Pericou of the gendarmerie said the woman had fallen down a 300-metre slope while taking a short cut walking with two friends. "There were only bones, clothes and shoes left," he told The Times. "They took 45 to 50 minutes to eat the body." French farmers are now demanding the right to shoot the protected birds after attacks on sheep and cows. The birds no longer have their diet of carcasses because European health and safety regulations now force breeders to burn dead animals. The Pyrenees population of Griffon vultures has apparently been affected by an EC ruling that due to danger of BSE transmission, no dead animals must be left on the fields. This has critically lowered the food availability of the scavenging birds. Like other vultures, the Griffon is a scavenger, feeding mostly on carcasses of dead animals which it finds by soaring over open areas, often moving in flocks. The maximum lifespan recorded for a specimen kept in captivity is 41.4 years. Fear of vultures has been growing in recent years. Le Nouvel Observateur reports of 'mutant vultures', with one woman saying that a group of the birds, whose wingspans can exceed seven feet , hovered near to where her children were sitting. One farmer, Alain Larralde, reported seeing a group of vultures attack and start eating an adult cow . There have also been alleged sightings of live animals being carried off . "You can't imagine what it is like to see an animal eaten alive ," Mr Larralde was reported to have said. Over the past few months, there have been 42 claims for compensation from farmers who say they have had livestock taken by the birds. The vultures, which have evolved to eat carrion and not tackle live prey, may have changed their habits due to starvation. According to a New Scientist report, there have been cases of vultures grabbing the bodies of shot animals before the hunters can reach them. "We are seeing three-figure vulture flocks over Belgium and Holland. These birds are fanning out across Europe in search of food," Grahame Madge, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' European bird of prey expert told the Mail. This is just the latest in a long and bizarre list of examples of paranoia among Israel's enemies. My personal favourite, which I have mentioned here once before , occurred in December 2010. A series of shark attacks in Egyptian waters, which led to one death and four injuries, caused the regional governor Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shousha to blame it on Israel . "The Mossad throwing the deadly shark in the sea to hit tourism in Egypt is not out of the question," he said. In response, the Israeli foreign ministry made a statement that "the man must have seen Jaws one time too many." But this paranoia can have a more serious effect, stoking the flames of hatred of Israel in the Muslim world. Most damaging are the reports that reek of unfounded conspiracy theories, but not quite as obviously as those mentioned above. Last month, in a rather odd turn of events, Al-Masry Al-Youm, a leading Egyptian daily newspaper, ran a story accusing Zipi Livni, the former leader of Israel's centrist Kadima party and a former Mossad agent, of having sex with the enemy in the 1980s in order to secure intelligence. The story, entitled "Livni: I had sex with Arabs in return for political concessions", was the most read on the website, clocking up 20,000 shares on Facebook and over 1,800 tweets. According to the Times of Israel , the Egyptian story defied all journalistic conventions of newsworthiness in that it was based on a mysterious - and so far elusive - interview Livni is supposed to have given to the Times of London back in 2009. It quoted her as stating that she is "not against having sexual relations in order to obtain information that will benefit the State of Israel". It omitted, however, to mention that she said had never been asked to "go to bed with someone for my country". The story is especially pernicious as it was not entirely without a modicum of truth. After all, the Israeli side is not without its own excesses of strangeness, albeit not on the same scale. The Egyptian newspaper referred to "research" carried out by the Zomet Institute - a non-profit, Orthodox "public research organisation" - which ruled that from the point of view of Jewish law, it would be permitted under certain circumstances for female Mossad agents to sleep with the enemy if this would protect many lives from terrorist atrocities. Although the Times of Israel seemed to pooh-pooh the story, it was in fact published in the Jerusalem Post in 2010. Rabbi Ari Shvat, who led the "study", explained that there were many Biblical precedents for "honey-trap" strategies, including the story of Queen Esther sleeping with the Persian King Ahaseurus to save her people, and the seduction of Sisera, a Canaanite general, by a Hebrew girl called Yael, who later chopped off his head. The Rabbi explained that according to Jewish law, women are passive partners during sex, and so seduction for intelligence purposes is permitted when lives are at stake. However, there are certain restrictions: although female Mossad agents do not need specific Rabbinical authority to seduce an enemy target, they must not commit such acts in public, and should not do so if they are known to be Israeli. According to Rabbi Shvat, seduction assignments should "be given to a woman who in any event is promiscuous", and if she was married, the husband should divorce her beforehand, and they remarry her afterwards. Nevertheless, as the saying goes, the Egyptian newspaper took the ball and ran with it. Although their story is unlikely to damage Livni's popularity at home, it may easily do so abroad. Livni is one of Israel's foremost moderate politicians and brightest hopes for peace, who has often criticised Netanyahu's excesses; she is an ardent supporter of the two-state solution and has a long-standing reputation for integrity. Recently she has marked her return to frontline politics by forming a new party, Hatnuah. That is, they had the opportunity to view vultures from a special observation post, and learn about the authority's efforts to protect them. Vultures have lived in the area for thousands of years, but nowadays manage to survive thanks largely to a project that has placed and maintains feeding stations throughout the desert. A network of 20 feeding centers in the Negev and the Arava, run by a devoted team of park rangers and scientists, helps maintain the vulture population in the region and also provides a source of food for vultures arriving from other areas. Through these efforts they have succeeded in slowing down the eradication of vultures in the south. Three years ago, the project was expanded after the planning and zoning commission of the southern region determined that Israel Chemicals should offer compensation for the environmental damage caused by its Negev mining work. One activity the company chose to fund was the establishment of a system that would collect animal carcasses and transport them to areas visited by vultures - scavengers who feed on dead animals. "We subcontract the gathering of a hundred tons of animal carcasses a year, mainly from Bedouin towns in the Negev which report their locations," says Ohad Hatzofe, an avian ecologist at the parks authority. "And in this way we also provide a solution to a grave health hazard." "According to a Hebrew University study, the vultures receive 94 percent of their food from the feeding stations," Hatzofe says. "This fact means they are protected, as they do not eat in places where they may be poisoned, or electrocuted by power lines." The vultures' dependence on these stations does not negatively impact their natural behavior, Hatzofe explains. "In many areas in the world, like Europe and India, vultures have long been dependent on human beings for their food," he says. "In the past, the Bedouin raised flocks of sheep in the Negev, and the vultures lived off of the animal carcasses. Today we have to collect these carcasses from populated areas and bring them to the feeding stations - after checking to make sure they are suitable for vultures. "It's not easy to find locations , because they must be isolated and undisturbed. Other types of fowl also find their way to them, including those called Egyptian vultures," Hatzofe explains. Many of the birds are captured in order to be tagged, and have transmitters attached to their bodies, which allow them to be tracked. According to Hatzofe, 200 vultures were spotted in Israel last year, and more than half of them had been tagged. Thanks to the transmitters, the authorities know that some of them are migratory and reach as far as Saudi Arabia. A few of them arrive in Israel from the Balkans and the Caucasus. Parks authority workers must also contend with various threats to the vultures' nesting places. These include disturbances caused by travelers, as when private helicopters fly nearby.
