Revealed: Tower Hamlets mayor's close links to TV station rapped for bias towards him

06 March 2013

The full extent of links between Tower Hamlets council and a controversial Bangladeshi TV channel can be revealed today.

An investigation by the Evening Standard has found Channel S provided such favourable political coverage to mayor Lutfur Rahman that regulator Ofcom ruled some of its programmes illegal.

Shows on the satellite station, based in Walthamstow, did not "inform and educate" but were broadcast to promote Mr Rahman "in a positive light".

The problems occurred under previous owner Mohammed Ferdhaus, who was jailed for fraud in 2008. Ofcom is powerless to act as Channel S, which is watched by tens of thousands, is now under new management.

The mayor employs Channel S journalist Mohammed Jubair as a personal adviser on a publicly funded salary. Tower Hamlets - which has the highest child poverty rate in Britain, with four in 10 children living in poverty - spent lb12,000 sponsoring a Channel S awards ceremony last May.

Mr Jubair appears to have played a role in the payment, according to documents released under freedom of information laws.

Ministers are so concerned about Ofcom's inability to tackle the issue that they are preparing to introduce legislation. Local government minister Brandon Lewis said: "Such actions are not just a misuse of public funds, they are harmful to local democracy and an independent, free media.

"We are looking at putting on a statutory basis to address this abuse of taxpayers' money."

Mr Rahman, an ally of Ken Livingstone, was elected as an independent in 2010. He has been supported by coverage from Channel S, which broadcasts to the borough's 80,000-strong Bangladeshi population. Ofcom has found that its coverage of Tower Hamlets breached broadcasting rules five times since 2008.

The latest censure, last month, said an advert featuring Mr Rahman misled the public. After the previous "serious breaches", the regulator said it wanted a "significant fine", but the station was beyond reach as its holding company had entered liquidation and re-formed under new owners.

In May last year, the council paid lb12,000 to sponsor Channel S's awards ceremony. An invoice approving the payment contains a note from Tower Hamlets director of communications Takki Sulaiman. "Please proceed with Jubair," it reads.

Mr Jubair earns lb175 a day for a three-day week. Peter Golds, leader of the local Conservative group, said: "There is a conflict of interest. Mr Jubair cannot be on the council payroll while reporting on the council."

Mr Ferdhaus still presents shows on the channel. At Croydon crown court in 2008, he was jailed for 18 months over "crash-for-cash" bogus accidents. Tower Hamlets said: "Ofcom censured the advertisers not the council. We are considering our position in respect of future advertising." It said Mr Jubair "supports the Mayor in fulfilling the commitments he has made to local people".

Of the sponsorship of Channel S, the council added: "We sponsor a range of events across the community to promote council services."

Channel S said: "Channel S Television Ltd in its present form has only been trading since the end of June 2012. Everything that you mention was prior to June 2012 and I cannot comment on it as it was under different management at that time."

Tower Hamlets extremist vote poses Ed Miliband's first big election test

A man with close links to Islamic fundamentalism and the backing of prominent racists could this week be elected as the executive mayor of a council, with almost total control over its lb1 billion budget.

Lutfur Rahman was sacked by the Labour Party last month as its candidate for mayor of Tower Hamlets amid deep concerns about his links with a Muslim supremacist group, the Islamic Forum of Europe (IFE), and a number of powerful local businessmen.

Mr Rahman also signed up entire families of "sham" paper Labour members - some of whom do not even support the party - to win nomination as Labour's candidate.

Mr Rahman is now running as an independent and his supporters say he is "hopeful" of victory.

"Things look very good," said one of his major business backers, Shiraj Haque, a millionaire restaurateur.

Labour sources said the contest between Mr Rahman and their new candidate, Helal Abbas, was "extremely close" and would depend on turnout in Thursday's election.

Unlike a conventional leader, a directly-elected mayor has almost complete power over a council's finances and cannot be controlled, checked or sacked by councillors.

Tower Hamlets moved from a conventional leader system to a mayoralty this year as a result of a campaign spearheaded by the IFE.

In secret filming earlier this year, Abu Talha, an IFE activist, told an undercover reporter for The Sunday Telegraph and Channel 4's Dispatches: "The mayor is going to have a lot more control. That's why we need to get someone, one of our brothers, in there. Which we will do."

The law says that if 5 per cent of the electorate petition a council, it must hold a referendum on changing to a mayoral system.

Earlier this year another prominent IFE activist, Abjol Miah, organised such a petition.

A total of 99.3 per cent of the signatures were Asian names, in a borough which is only a third Asian.

Council officers found that almost half were "invalid", with entire pages of names and addresses written in the same handwriting and around 5,000 not even appearing on the electoral register.

Nonetheless, enough of the signatures were ruled to be valid.

The mayoral referendum was granted and passed in May after an intensive campaign involving the IFE, Mr Haque and others who have now emerged as backers of Mr Rahman.

The literature advocating a "yes" vote in the referendum campaign used an identical logo and typeface to some of Mr Rahman's leaflets in the mayoral campaign.

Defeat in strongly-Labour Tower Hamlets would be a humiliation for the party's new leader, Ed Miliband, in what is his first electoral test. However, it would also raise even more serious concerns about radical Islam's political power in the UK.

According to one of its own leaflets, the IFE - based at the hardline East London Mosque in Tower Hamlets - wants to change the "very infrastructure of society, its institutions, its culture, its political order and its creed ... from ignorance to Islam."

The group is accused by one of the area's Labour MPs, Jim Fitzpatrick, of infiltrating and "corrupting" his party in a way similar to the Militant Tendency in the 1980s.

Mr Rahman, a former council leader, was removed from that post by his fellow councillors in May after The Sunday Telegraph and Dispatches exposed how he had achieved the position with the help of the IFE.

Six serving and former Labour councillors told us they had been threatened by a senior IFE official that the group would mobilise its supporters against them if they did not choose Mr Rahman as their leader.

Mr Rahman confirmed that the IFE official had helped run his leadership campaign, though he denied that any threats were made to councillors on his behalf.

In the secret filming, the IFE activist, Mr Miah, told the undercover reporter: "We've consolidated ourselves now. We've got a lot of influence and power in the council - councillors, politicians."

During Mr Rahman's two years as council leader, Tower Hamlets channelled millions of pounds of public money to front organisations run by the IFE.

The borough's public libraries stocked large quantities of extremist literature, including taped sermons by the spiritual leader of the 9/11 hijackers, Anwar al-Awlaki. An anti-gay preacher was hosted in the council chamber.

Lutfur Ali, a man with close links to the IFE, was appointed as the council's assistant chief executive, despite headhunters saying he was unqualified for the job.

Mr Ali was also removed after this newspaper's investigation, but he was present at Mr Rahman's campaign launch and is expected to return to the Town Hall should Mr Rahman be elected.

During the campaign, Mr Rahman's supporters have targeted the Bangladeshi community electorate with a blitz of tens of thousands of leaflets falsely claiming that their Labour rival, Mr Abbas, is a "racist", a "wife-beater", and a bankrupt.

One leaflet delivered door-to-door on Friday falsely claimed that Mr Abbas had "obnoxiously" insulted the imam of Mecca, "initiated a physical attack" against his political opponents and was guilty of "racist TV slurs".

"It is a hugely well-financed operation and is making a real impact in the Bangladeshi community," said one Labour councillor. "In a low-turnout election, it could make the difference between victory and defeat."

Mr Rahman, who insists he is paying for his entire campaign out of his own pocket, says he is the victim of "racism" and "unfairness" by the Labour Party.

"I won the vote of the membership. The imposition of Cllr Abbas in my place is an insult to the democratic process," he said.

Mr Rahman said that if elected he would "work to bring together our diverse communities". However, one of his leading supporters, Wais Islam, a former Tower Hamlets councillor, recently posted anti-Semitic insults about a local journalist on his Facebook page, though he later apologised for them.

Another prominent Tower Hamlets racist, Abul Hussain - expelled from George Galloway's Respect party for making anti-Semitic remarks - has organised campaign meetings on Mr Rahman's behalf.

Mr Abbas said: "If I am elected I will ensure that no one is favoured or disadvantaged because they're my cronies. My campaign is not funded by people wanting contracts - it's funded by the Labour Party."

Rushanara Ali, the Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, said Mr Abbas's victory was vital to "stand up for the values of freedom, of transparency, of the correct use of public money".

She said: "The stakes are so high. We do not want the people of Tower Hamlets, and especially the Bangladeshi community which I am so proud to be a part of, to be known to this country for the wrong reasons."

Tommy knows it's all over for his hate group and make another of his hilarious video addresses.

Tommy Robinson EDL leader make total fool of himself by making yet another video address, this time crying about how the EDL failed to spread their hate in Walthamstow. He also has a cry about Nick Griffin and the fact that Chris Knowles aka Aeneas Lavinium was sacked for being connected as one of the business supporters that fund the EDL denying Chris funding the EDL. Seen here on left at 10:00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC6izfZiEkU along side Alan Ayling (Lake) a Zionist, recently also sacked for his connections to the far-right group http://www.socialistworker.co.uk/art.php?id=29355 , Roberta Moore; extremist Zionist Kahanist former EDL Jewish division leader and now JDL-UK head. Roberta owns the EDL's company and is director of it's financial side still despite her move. http://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/49806/the-far-right-jewish-voice-split-and-disarray

He starts crying about his up and coming trial for money laundering, conspiracy to evade tax, mortgage fraud and the authorities are calling him the head of a a criminal gang.

Then he cries that his old supporters think he's a lying thieving criminal conman. This will because he is a lying thieving criminal conman.

He spent 12 months inside before the EDL for assault, committing actual bodily harm and assault with intent to resist arrest who was trying to prevent him from beating up his wife, while his partner was cautioned for possession of cocaine.

He now admits his house has been raided, him and his wife arrested, he did 8 days on remand for breaking his bail at the Tower Hamlets demo, when he arrived disguised, dressed as a Rabbi. http://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/54187/rabbi-disguise-edl-leader He lied about going on hunger strike for a week, only lasting 24 hours http://www.lutontoday.co.uk/news/local/hungry_for_justice_edl_leader_released_1_3048024 and admitting that as soon as he was released he went for a halal Nandos in Luton.

He then cries about spending 3 days in a Swiss Jail for making a tw*t of himself with Kevin Carroll on the Fifa building.

He missed out being found guilty of assault at the Blackburn demo, when he headbutted one of his ex-forces supporters. http://edlnews.co.uk/index.php/latest-news/latest-news/291-edl-leader-found-guilty

Then the umpteen other convictions and arrests he didn't mention, including ones for football hooliganism, he was convicted in July 2011 and received 12 months community rehabilitation order, a 3 year football banning order got 150 hours community service, for reportedly leading a group of Luton fans, which played a fundamental part in starting the 100 person brawl, when which he chanted "EDL till I die". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-14278957
He was also arrested in France in May 2011 in Lyon on a demo with the white-supremacist Bloc Identitaire http://twitpic.com/e/1fna http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4644766.stm
Poor little Tommy, it's all over isn't it.
We have no sympathy for you or your ailing little group of hateful idiots.

Asian man rapes and strangles woman in London, more attacks are possible warn police

A man who raped and murdered a woman in east London may have raped two more women nearby earlier this year, police have said.

Michelle Samaraweera, 35, was raped and strangled on 30 May. Her body was found in Queens Road park in Walthamstow.

Police believe the same man may have raped a 59-year-old woman near Queens Road in March and a 46-year-old woman in nearby Whipps Cross in April.

He is described as Asian, or with dark skin, and aged between 30 and 45 years.

'Callously murdered'

Miss Samaraweera's body was found by a passer-by in the park and play area at 0550 BST on 30 May.

She was last seen alive at a nearby Somerfield shop five hours earlier.

Det Sup Vic Rae said: "Michelle was callously murdered as she returned to her boyfriend's address and it's essential we trace the man responsible as soon as possible."

Four men aged between 29 and 35 were arrested in connection with the inquiry.

Two were released on bail and no further action will be taken against the other two men.

Police linked Miss Samaraweera's death to the rape of the 59-year-old woman, who was attacked near Queens Road while walking home at around 0100 GMT on 24 March.

The suspect was standing nearby as she approached her front door, police said.

She walked around him but as she entered her home he forced his way inside, raping her in her bedroom.

They are also linking her death to the rape of the 46-year-old in Lea Bridge Road, Whipps Cross, at around 0100 BST on 22 April.

The victim in that incident was walking along the road when the suspect attempted to talk to her, police said.

He then forced her into a nearby alleyway, where he raped her.

The suspect then fled, warning the woman not to leave the scene.

Waltham Forest police have increased patrols in the area since Miss Samaraweera's murder.

Ch Supt Mark Benbow said: "We do urge women in the area to remain vigilant, particularly if walking alone at night.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have information about the suspect or who may have been approached in similar circumstances."

THE leader of the English Defence League, Stephen Lennon, was believed to be among 53 members of the far right group arrested yesterday.

EDL sources said they were planning a surprise demo in Whitechapel, east London.

Last week Lennon, 29, tweeted: "Its death prison or glory. We shall not submit #nosurrender"

Dozens of police in riot vans swooped on vehicles carrying EDL members on the M1 near Luton, Beds, in what officers called a "pre-event investigation".

The extremist group had been planning a protest next Saturday in Walthamstow, north-east London.

A similar protest in the area in September ended in violence with 20 arrests.

the final phase of equipping the Underground Line from Walthamstow to Victoria from where the line derives it's name - the Victoria Line . It was later extended further to Brixton . Fine views and great footage of the engineering involved in this mammoth project which meant so much to Londoners. When complete it was possible to cross the city in less than 25 minutes - a journey that could take well over an hour by road. It enabled people to work further away from their home area.

Surrender to the forces of anarchy! Vigilantes forced to defend stores as powerless police let yobs seize streets
As police lost control of the streets of London last night, locals were forced to take the law into their own hands to protect their homes and businesses.
In Dalston and Hackney, north-east London, shopkeepers and their families fought back against looting youths and forced them from the streets. As surrounding areas were pillaged members of the town's large Turkish community stood firm outside their homes and businesses.
One man said: 'This is Turkish Kurdish area. They come to our shops and we fight them with sticks.'

.Destruction: A group of looters flee from clothes store Blue Inc in Peckham after stealing clothes On Shacklewell Lane, where a single-deck bus was burned out, stick-wielding shopkeepers stood defiant in the street after chasing away a gang of youngsters intent on destruction.
One, who would not give his name, said: 'We beat up four of them quite badly and they ran off.' Another said: 'This is not justice, coming here and trying to attack us.'
In testament to the men's bravery, several businesses on the street remained open as usual, unlike other areas where shopkeepers had heeded police advice to shut their doors early.

Guardian reporter Paul Lewis described the scenes on Kingsland Road, Hackney, as Turkish men clashed with youths, tweeting: 'Kingsland Road chaotic as Turkish men attack other, predominantly black, youths with sticks, metal barricades and bricks.'
In a further tweet Mr Lewis quoted a man carrying a stick as saying: 'This is Turkish Kurdish area. They come to our shops and we fight them with sticks.'
South of the river in Tooting, near to Clapham, where high streets were ravaged, Asian shopkeepers shut up early and stood guard outside their stores with their relatives to protect them.
A local resident, who asked not to be named, said: 'With no police on the streets, it could've been a free-for-all for criminals. I'm so relieved it didn't kick off round here last night. If it had kicked off I dread to think what would have happened.'

.Too little, too late: Riot police protect the entrance to the looted Debenhams department store in Clapham Junction, south London. Residents accused the police of doing nothing to stop looting in the areaMeanwhile, in Clapham, residents accused the police of 'doing nothing' to stop opportunistic looters pillaging the area's high street. Shops including department Debenhams were stripped bare by rioters who arrived in cars which they filled with whatever items they could steal.
In spite of the fact that people were forced to take the law into their own hands to defend homes and businesses across the capital, Home Secretary Theresa May this morning refused to authorise the deployment of heavier weapons and tactics to combat the civil unrest.
She said: 'The disorder we've seen is at a level that hasn't been seen for some years in this country. We do need to bring an end to it and we need to bring an end to it soon.'
'There is no excuse for these levels of criminality and it needs to be dealt with. These people need to see that there are consequences for their actions.
'We need robust policing but we also need to ensure that justice is done through the courts and this will begin today.'
She hailed the 'strong leadership' of the police as she called on local communities and parents to help efforts to keep the peace.
Asked if the Army would be brought in, Mrs May said an end to the riots could be brought with policing, the use of intelligence and the help of local communities.
'The way we police in Britain is not through use of water cannon,' she said. 'The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities.'
By midnight flashpoints had multiplied around London, with Clapham, Hackney, Dalston, Peckham, Woolwich and Lewisham added to the list which already included Enfield, Walthamstow and Tottenham.
And there were fears that the chaos could spread nationwide, with Croydon to the south of the capital ablaze, and even Birmingham and Bristol joining in the destruction as hundreds of youths smashed shop windows and looted the contents.
TODAY'S POLL Should the Army be brought in to deal with the riots?

Because the tactic was a success police are now considering using the same tactic elsewhere.
Commander Christine Jones, said: 'We are using tactics flexibly to respond to the disorder we are still seeing in different areas of the capital.
'Anyone involved in criminality should be under no illusion that we will pursue you.

'We have been making arrests all evening and have a team working during the night examining CCTV images.
'We will follow up evidence in the coming days in order to bring anyone else responsible for criminal acts to justice.'
With cars, shops and homes burning, police tactics were coming under ever-increasing attack.
Riot officers were unable to deal with the sheer scale of the violence and there were questions about the Metropolitan force's lack of leadership following the resignation of Sir Paul Stephenson.
The police lack of control allowed mobs of children aged as young as seven to rampage through the streets at will. Mobs of masked youngsters, some on BMXs, roamed the streets ransacking stores in daylight and hurling petrol bombs at police.
At least 35 officers were hurt and tens of millions of pounds of damage was caused to homes and businesses in 'copycat criminal activity' across London.

Halal meat is being served in schools, hospitals and pubs - even though vets say Islamic slaughter is cruel

A few hours before dawn, and even through the inky blackness it is clear this is no ordinary warehouse. Outside the building, gusts of wind send hay and straw flying, and the air is thick with the acrid sent of manure.

Despite the darkness, I can see blood trickling down the gutters and a group of men clutching knives. Every so often, the eerie scene is punctured by the sound of lambs bleating.

I am standing outside one of Britain's abattoirs. To the casual observer, it is no different to any other slaughterhouse, though it's strange to find one so close to a city centre that it's within walking distance of Birmingham's branch of Harvey Nichols. I have visited several abattoirs for research purposes over the years, and by their very nature they're noisy and messy places, with vats of blood and entrails.

The main difference here, though, is that this abattoir produces halal meat, in accordance with strict Islamic guidelines. Put simply, this means the animals killed here are not stunned with an electrical current - as they are at conventional slaughterhouses - to render them unconscious before they are dispatched.

Instead, they are fully conscious as their throats are slit by a slaughterman as he utters prayers to Allah to 'bless' the animal. The creature then bleeds to death in a process that can take more than 30 seconds.

Killing an animal by cutting its throat without stunning is, in fact, illegal in this country. However, there is a legal loophole allowing this if it is being done for religious reasons - in other words, for the production of halal or kosher meat.

But this is an exemption that the British Veterinary Association and the Government's advisers, the Farm Animal Welfare Council, are objecting to, saying this form of slaughter causes 'intolerable cruelty'. They have repeatedly demanded that it be banned. For their part, many Muslims claim it is their religious duty to eat only halal meat from unstunned animals. It is vital, they say, that the animal be slaughtered while fully conscious so it can receive Allah's blessing.

Yet recent reports have suggested that it is not just devout Muslims who are consuming halal meat. Two months ago, it was revealed that supermarkets such as Waitrose and Tesco, fast food chains including McDonald's, schools, hospitals, pubs and famous sporting venues such as Ascot and Wembley are serving up halal meat to unwitting customers.

So where does halal meat come from, and what is the truth behind its burgeoning use?

According to the World Halal Forum, which -promotes halal and is holding its European -conference in London, there are two million -consumers in Britain.

Until now, it has been difficult to ascertain facts. Halal meat producers have consistently rejected requests to show journalists around their British -abattoirs and factories.

When I applied to be shown around a number of halal slaughterhouses, calls went unreturned and messages unanswered for weeks.

So I decided to go undercover, posing as a potential buyer of halal meat for a fictional chain of high-quality 'bespoke meats'. After four weeks, I finally -managed to find an abattoir willing to show me the entire production process - from 'squeals to meals'. Once I had outlined my fictional business proposal, a Birmingham-based company called Mr Meats agreed to show me around its abattoir. The owner, Masti Khan, was unfailingly polite and eager to please.

Mr Meats slaughters around 1,000 animals a night, mostly sheep and goats, but occasionally cattle, too.

When I step inside, the first thing that hits me is the overpowering stench - a nasty, fatty smell that sticks in the throat.

And then there's the noise of machinery, interspersed with bleating animals and the slaughtermen uttering prayers.

Hundreds of sheep and lambs are penned up in tiny stalls. From time to time, one tries - and fails - to escape by leaping over the bars of its pen. But then the same would be true of any abattoir.

It is only when it comes to the actual slaughter that the differences become apparent. I watch - and secretly film - as the animals are herded onto a -conveyor belt that leads them to the slaughterman, who is wearing a blue hairnet over his hair and beard in accordance with hygiene requirements.

Grabbing one lamb at a time, he pulls back its head and slits the throat with a swift movement from his razor-sharp knife.

Blood gushes everywhere as he recites the Islamic Bismillah prayer in Arabic: 'In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful.'

One of the supervisors, who oversees the firm's 50 or so largely Muslim employees, explains to me the -religious principle behind this process.

'Animals that are stunned are not halal. An animal that is unconscious is not going to listen to the prayer.

'In the Holy Book, it says that the animal should listen to the prayers of Allah. If it's unconscious, then it won't be able to do that.' Though the deep incision to the neck cuts through the animal's windpipe and main arteries, the creatures are still able to cry out.

During my two-hour visit, I watch as lamb after lamb has its throat sliced open while fully conscious. They make pitiful bleating and gurgling sounds as they choke on their own blood. It's a chilling sound that, once heard, stays with you for days afterwards.

And then there's the fact that the animals can witness each other being killed as they travel along the conveyor belt. Their hooves twitch wildly as they try to break fee.

One lamb cries out for more than 20 seconds before it flops off the end of the conveyor belt and on to a rotating table. From there, it is shackled by its hind legs and hauled up to the ceiling on a hook, where it is left with a dozen others to 'bleed out' - another -important part of the halal process.

Of course, no slaughter of an animal is easy to watch. But it is hard to remain dispassionate as I watch dozens of still-conscious animals bleeding to death, the floor covered by an inch of warm, frothy blood.

I find myself siding with the British Veterinary Association in its claim that the process is more inhumane than conventional stunned slaughter. Surely it would cause less suffering for the animals to be stunned first.

That is not to say that conventional abattoirs operate without fault. Earlier this year, I investigated an organic slaughterhouse, certified by the Soil Association, that had been secretly filmed by the welfare group Animal Aid.

Inside, the staff were caught beating animals and failing to stun them before cutting their throats.

Steve McGrath, chief executive of the Meat Hygiene Service, later said: 'I have watched the film and have seen abject cruelty by the slaughtermen to the animals being killed; ineffective stunning; animals having their necks dislocated and heads decapitated before being fully bled; pigs being kicked; and shackling before stunning.'

Similar problems were found in every one of the seven slaughterhouses that Animal Aid secretly filmed, despite the presence of Government appointed vets. At least in this halal abattoir, I do not witness any deliberate mistreatment. It is impossible to find out how many animals are killed in halal abattoirs. The last Labour administration ordered the Meat Hygiene Service to stop keeping records.

It was ostensibly a cost-cutting measure, but animal welfare groups fear it was to help disguise the rapid growth of the halal meat industry.

However, the last available figures, from 2004, suggest that 114 million halal animals and 2.1 million kosher ones are killed annually.

However, some halal producers - aware of the controversy that ritual slaughter can provoke - do stun their animals first, causing huge tensions within the Muslim community over the interpretation of what is, and isn't, halal meat.

Some organisations, such as the Halal Monitoring Committee, post inspectors inside abattoirs, including Mr Meats, to ensure that animals are not stunned before their throats are cut.

Other organisations, however, say that stunning is acceptable. Nizar Boga, an Islamic scholar and former adviser on dietary issues at the London Central Mosque, says: 'The Prophet told us about the need to care for animals, especially during slaughter. It's absolutely forbidden in Islam for an animal to be aware of death during slaughter.

'Organisations like the Halal Monitoring Committee are frightening decent Muslims for their own ends. They are making money from this.

'Their interpretation of Islam on this issue is simply wrong. All of the top Muslim scholars around the world agree on this. Muslims have to respect animals.'

Either way, keeping track of what meat has or hasn't come from stunned animals is hard to monitor, causing huge difficulties for British consumers of all faiths who would prefer to buy meat from animals that have been killed using the more humane method of slaughter.

This is increasingly important now that most leading supermarkets, including Tesco and Asda, sell halal meat. Tesco, for example, launched a halal barbecue range this summer and reported strong sales. So which method of slaughter do the supermarket giants use?

A spokesman for Tesco says: 'Pre-stunned meat produced to halal standards conforms to all our stringent hygiene and animal welfare standards.'

For their part, Morrisons says that 'all of our fresh meat is 100 per cent British and non-halal. Only our -frozen New Zealand lamb is halal.'

As for Asda, the supermarket says its policy is 'that all animals used for Asda brand products, halal or non-halal, are stunned'.

But it turns out that is not quite the full story. I decided to visit five Asda stores in London that have specialist in store butcher's shops, run as -independent concessions operating under the name Haji Baba.

The stores in Hounslow, Colindale, Walthamstow, Beckton and the Isle of Dogs confirmed to me that the meat they sold was 'authentically halal'.

'The animals were not stunned,' they said.

Though the store workers did not know the precise source of the meat, Masti Khan, the owner of Mr Meats, told me that he has supplied lamb to the five Asda stores I visited.

Confronted with my findings, Asda told me: 'Haji Baba is an independent company. The method of slaughter is a matter for Haji Baba and their customers.

'All Asda brand products are stunned. The abattoir that the Daily Mail filmed inside is not used for Asda branded products.'

The key point is that wherever the meat comes from, consumers should have a clearly labelled choice.

Yet given that there is no legal requirement to label whether meat comes from stunned or unstunned animals, the chances are you've already eaten halal killed in the way I witnessed - or soon will do.

In Europe, pressure is building to standardise slaughtering practices to ensure that the majority of all animals are killed without stunning.

In France, for example, 80 per cent of all sheep are killed without stunning, and almost all animals in Belgium are bled to death while fully conscious.

And this process is beginning to accelerate in Britain, too. Consumer and animal welfare groups claim this is illegal because the exemption from animal welfare laws granted to Muslims and Jews is being extended across the whole meat industry, purely to cut costs.

'This is no longer about religion,' says Peter Stevenson of Compassion In World Farming.

'The exemption in the law was not granted to the food industry to streamline its production processes and make life easier for itself - but that is what it has become.

'We are not opposed to halal as long as the animals are stunned before they are killed.'

In June, the European Parliament decided to try to force the food industry to label halal and kosher meat as coming from 'unstunned animals'.

The legislation faces an uphill struggle, as all EU member states will have to approve the legislation before it can become law.

James Paice, minister of state at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, says that, in principle, the Government supports labelling.

Last week, he told the House of Commons: 'This is a highly emotive issue, and I understand the demand for labelling.

'The Government would like all animals to be properly stunned before they are bled to slaughter. There is a discussion at European level about food information regulations, but we do not believe that is the right vehicle.

'Next year, we will consult on implementation of the European animal welfare regulations, and the labelling issue will certainly be examined as part of that.'

Whatever your beliefs on the rights and wrongs of religious slaughter, surely we should all welcome the choice over whether we buy such meat.

But unless labelling laws are tightened, we may soon lose that choice, just as they have in many European countries.

Support for clear labelling of unstunned halal meat also comes from an unlikely source.

When I confronted Masti Khan, owner of Mr Meats slaughterhouse, after my visit, he said: 'Consumers should be given the choice. I have nothing to hide.

FOUR teenagers lost their lives as three more days of violence swept Broken Britain.

Two victims were knifed, one shot and one beaten to death in 72 hours of horror.

Two were aged 18 and the others 17 in a trail of mayhem that led from London to Nottingham and the normally quiet city of Hereford.

In one attack the murdered youth, 18-year-old Wahab Zaaki, had a history of carrying knives and may have been armed himself.

Killed ... Wahab Zaaki

Wahab, who called himself "Killa", was stabbed in the chest in a frenzied attack near a bin store in Walthamstow, East London, on Friday night.

He stumbled 200 yards to a courtyard where he collapsed, dying soon afterwards on the way to hospital. Yesterday it emerged that Wahab was known to cops for carrying blades.

He lived in nearby Chingford with his mother, stepfather and seven-year-old sister.

He went to Walthamstow after getting a phone call while out with his mum to say someone was "looking for him". His girlfriend Lindsay Moss, 16, said: "Killa was just a silly nickname. He was a very quiet person studying art."

Victims ... Darren Loader, left, and Tyler Juett

A shrine where Wahab fell was lined with flowers, messages and bottles of his favourite drink, Dragon Stout.

A 17-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder remained in police custody.

Less than 24 hours later another 18-year-old was found dead with a single gunshot wound to the neck near the notorious Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham, North London.

The area, scene of riots in 1985 which claimed the life of PC Keith Blakelock, was cordoned off last night.

The victim, thought to be Algerian, has not been named.

He is the sixth teen to be murdered in the capital in 2009.

Last night the family of a teen stabbed to death during a suspected burglary protested his innocence. Tyler Juett, 17, died after neighbours of Jacqueline Johnson said an intruder had been caught "red-handed" in her semi in Old Basford, Nottingham.

But his aunt Leah Juett said the family had seen no proof he was trying to commit a crime when he died.

She declared: "We do not want to say too much but all we will say, for now, is that people make things up."

A 22-year-old man, believed to be a close relative of the householder, was being quizzed by detectives.

Meanwhile in Hereford, police continued to question four men over the killing of student Darren Loader, 17.

He was battered to death after being ambushed as he walked home with friends on a disused railway line.

It is thought the attack followed a row between local teenagers and Eastern European immigrants.
